First thoughts: Good news, bad news

*** Sonia’s good news, bad news: Here’s the bad news for Sonia Sotomayor: Yesterday, with the Supreme Court’s New Haven ruling, was her toughest day as a SCOTUS nominee since her "wise Latina" comment produced that political/media frenzy a few weeks ago. But here’s the good news: If yesterday is as bad as it's going to get -- and most expected the Supreme Court to reverse Sotomayor and her 2nd Circuit panel in the New Haven case -- then she's still well on her way to winning confirmation. What’s more, the court’s 5-4 ruling (along the usual conservative/liberal split) gives her 2nd Circuit panel decision plenty of cover. Now, it's all about the confirmation hearing and how the Republicans go after her. But as we learned with John Roberts’ and Samuel Alito’s hearings, it’s more than likely that she’ll say absolutely nothing controversial during these hearings.

Video: Guest host Alison Stewart talks about the case with NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg.

*** So apparently there aren’t enough political ads? But while the New Haven case was yesterday’s main focus, the Supreme Court’s other action Monday -- to hear additional oral arguments in Citizens United vs. the Federal Election Commission on Sept. 9 -- could very well have a profound effect on American politics. According to experts, the court’s decision to revisit the case could result in overturning the campaign-finance law that corporations, unions, and other special interests can’t air political ads 30 days before a primary and 60 days before the general election. "This has the potential to be a blockbuster," Michael E. Toner, a former chairman of the FEC, told the Washington Post. He added that the issues have implications for "the whole architecture of the federal campaign financing system." Regarding this action and the New Haven case, talk about the legislating from the bench!

*** Iraq withdrawal: Although it’s been overshadowed largely by other news (Michael Jackson, Bernie Madoff, Iran), today is the deadline for U.S. soldiers to withdraw from Iraqi cities. However, as NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski reports, most of that withdrawal has been completed a day ahead of today’s deadline. Yet the withdrawal also comes as we learned that four U.S. troops died from combat-related injuries. And it also comes with a new CNN poll showing that just 34% approve of the Iraq war, that 73% agree with the decision to withdraw U.S. troops from the major Iraq cities, and that a majority believes the withdrawal will increase the violence in Iraq.

Video: President Obama declares military coup of Honduran president illegal; Ahmadinijad wins Iran vote recount; U.S. troops pull out of Iraq. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

*** Gibbs’ two pledges: Yesterday on MSNBC’s Hardball, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs made two pieces of news. One, regarding Gitmo, he said the Obama administration would absolutely go to Congress first to get approval of holding detainees indefinitely. Two, Gibbs pledged repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” by the time Obama runs for re-election.

*** Today’s cable catnip: Riddle us this: How is Sarah Palin

going to be able to run for president when so many other Republicans, especially those who worked on the McCain campaign, are more than willing to criticize her? Todd Purdum has a piece in the latest issue of Vanity Fair, in which former McCain campaign aides unload on her -- again. "They can't quite believe that for two frantic months last fall, caught in a Bermuda Triangle of a campaign, they worked their tails off to try to elect as vice president of the United States someone who, by mid-October, they believed for certain was nowhere near ready for the job, and might never be," Purdum writes.

*** Honduras vs. Iran: Here's something you should expect to hear a lot of today: What's the difference between getting involved with the Honduras situation and not with Iran? Of course, there are a lot of differences -- including the entire Organization of American States condemning the coup in Honduras; there wasn't that level of international will on the Iranian situation. Also, we have diplomatic relations with Honduras and therefore have leverage with that country. With Iran, zero relations so little leverage? That said, speaking out against the coup in Honduras as forcefully as the Obama administration has will lead to some on the right to criticize him for not doing the same with Iran.

*** The never-ending recount -- by the numbers: Are we going to get a decision today from the Minnesota Supreme Court regarding the state’s never-ending recount? It’s the last day of the month, and we were led to believe the court would have a decision by then. (Remember that the court heard oral arguments on June 1.) With the race still unresolved, here’s a look at it by the numbers:
-- $51.1 million has been raised between Coleman and Franken for the entire campaign
-- $50.3 million has been spent between the two candidates
-- $11 million (at least) has been spent on the recount
-- 2,424,946 votes were cast
-- 312 votes separate the candidates (Franken leads)
-- 239 days since Election Day 2008
-- 34 weeks since Election Day 2008
-- 7 months, 27 days since Election Day 2008
-- 4 seasons seen since Election Day 2008 election

*** Today’s sked: At 2:00 pm ET, President Obama makes remarks highlighting innovative non-profit programs. Also today, GOP Sens. Mitch McConnell, John McCain, and John Ensign discuss their ideas for health-care reform in Houston, TX at the well-known M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Countdown to Election Day 2009: 126 days
Countdown to Election Day 2010: 490 days

Repuklaklans like the fing looney that has to add BoBo to everything it writes.Looney writes that jawille is giving credit to Shurb for signing the agreement to withdrawal.Funny thing is that the Iraq's demanded the withdrawal,Bush was happy fighting for OIl,and Dead Eye Dick stood the make Billions from his Halliburton no bid contracts,so if you think the war mongers wanted to end there little war,you must be drinking the electric kool-add.The Iraqi people have something to cheer about, not quite how dead eye explained it,and how they would be dancing in the streets when we got there, and we would be treated as liberators.Another swing and a miss, don't ya think dead eye.Chuckie    it's a lot easier doing a show when it's all scripted, but you are not near as snarky as the press room showmenship. The end is Near for the Obstructionest party in Sota, large Scandinavian women are warming there voices, and the rest can't wait to see Norm finally leave, and crawl back to NY.
Beverly in Chicago - The Iraqis are celebrating our withdrawal we should rightly be to;

Isn't freedom grand? It looks like the people in Iran are looking at Iraq and saying that they'd like some of that freedom too. But freedom isn't free now is it? The people of Iran are realizing that, but they appear to be ready to make the ultimate sacrifices to achieve that freedom.  Good for them.

Todd Purdum has a piece in the latest issue of Vanity Fair, in which former McCain campaign aides unload on her -- again.

And I'll riddle you that--We knew that she wasn't qualified to run for "dog catcher" let alone runing for Vice President when they threw her into the race.

She was one of those unfortunite people that was used by the GOP with hopes od duping the Nation. So glad that it failed and she accommplished that fate on her own...all she needed to do was "open her mouth".

Her personal greed and disrespect for herself and her family was the ultimate of what most professional working mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts saw and despised. Her arrogance will distort her views of her experiences that will untimately entice her to run again for the office.

She tasted fame and attention....she will be back and it doesn't matter if the majority of her party supports her or not, she feel that there are enough of far right wingers that will. After all...that is she and Rush's base. Rush is the voice.

"You can dress them up, but you can't take them out". This best describes Sister Sarah...
So happy to hear Keith's ratings are doing well. He is such an important voice in this critical time as we make our way past the last 8 years.

???

Nielsen ratings have Olbie and msnbc dead last for every demographic. Maybe Olbie is using Obama's polling sources?
Beverly in Chicago (Sent Tuesday, June 30, 2009 9:50 AM)

Someone should compare what democrat liars claim Cheney has made off Haliburton to the money we know democrats stole while controlling the Fannies.

Financial Espionage trials will begin in 2010.
First of all, some house cleaning:

1. The upgraded graphics on MSNBC (less clutter and more white background) look terrific. Has anyone else noted the coincidence that, within a 2 week period, the NYT Magazine, Newsweek and now MSNBC have all cleaned up their graphics to make them cleaner and more readable?

2. One problem, however - When my flat-screen is set on S-Stretch (giving my image the least distortion) the bottom crawl on MSNBC gets cropped off. (This doesn't happen on CNN). Perhaps a little bit of tweaking by NBC's graphic geniuses could solve this problem without compromising the new clean look.

Now for stuff more substantive:

1. Appropriate answer to the "if not Iran, why Honduras?" question. The Monroe Doctrine (i.e. Hondurus is in our hemosphere).

2. But I do think it would help the Obama administration to be clearer about its policy toward Iran. What I keep waiting to hear is the the distinction between (a) cheerleading for freedom by both our citizens and our government and (b) our nuts & bolts relationships with other sovereign countries. There should be nothing inconsistent about criticizing another country's human rights policies while still trying to talk with them to address potential areas of common interest (Even though we were still in the midst of the Cold War, we were in close negotiations with the then Soviet Union over nuclear proliferation and arms control).

3. Finally, the insistence by NBC and other MSM outlets to pin down the Obama administration on dates-certain for hitting economic targets, reaching military objectives or passing legislation is, in my opinion, unrealistic. I keep waiting for Gibbs or Pres. Obama to reply that (1) there are times when you don't want to telegraph your foreign policy or military punches and (2) while we can attempt to manage and rein in macro economic events and trends, the government cannot actually control them. The best it can do is to set bench mark dates for quantifiable goals and then track "directional progress" toward those goals. For some news outlets to proclaim certain policies as "a failure" just because a goal wasn't reached by some arbitrary date is irresponsible journalism bordering on the yellow.
If you want name-calling you have to go to Feisty, Clara, The Democrap Sodier or MO.
BoBo Berry Kool-Aid (thats just funny)
Come on lefties - laugh - its good for your soul!

It's nice you think your funny, well at least that's one that thinks your funny. although I wouldn't get to excited about it, your not vary bright.
WE ALL need good firefighters...NO?

Who cares about their rank and file?
Just a Thought:

Thought well taken..
Indefinite detentions of the terrorists, or man-made disaster makers, or what ever they are called today? Wasn't that that same as the Bush/Cheney policy?

Obama = Bush
Or capitalism is fine, if you work hard to make a living, like being independent from government social programs, or if you enjoy showing people that America is opportunity based, based on how hard and smart you work vs. being outcome based like our Affirmitive Action laws require.

What I found beyond logic was the GOP trying to spin the SCOTUS 5-4 decision into a 9-0 anti-Sotomayor victory saying she's a racist.  Talk about spin.

Good job moderating Hardball, Chuck T.  I'd much rather see you on MTP because you do not play gotcha or try to twist the guest or administration's words into something else plus you are much more analytical that DG.  I didn't watch David G Sunday, for one thing--Lindsay Graham and Mitt Romney have nothing to say that I'm remotely interested in hearing because they never say anything new.

Yes, we should be celebrating the withdrawal of our troops out of Iraqi cities.  Not even front page coverage.  No matter how long we stay, there will be increased violence so we might as well cut our losses and get out according to the schedule.

To the various Bo Bo's here, you are the class clowns.  A little respect for the President of the U.S. might make your comments worth reading.  Right now, I don't bother.

If G. Bush had spent the Iraq War Trillion $$$ cost on a health care plan for our Country, we'd all have health coverage by now.
wow! chuck todd did look good on hardball yesterday. thats a hint msnbc

You do understand that the increase in cost will NOT take effect untill 2020 which gives us 10 years to bring on line new sources of energy.

Dennis, Columbus, Ohio

You obviously haven't read the bill have you?

And just where does the funding for these "new sources of energy" come from before 2020? That's right, it comes from taxes on existing energy sources. Whatever you're paying for your fuel today, double it if the cap and trade bill becomes law.
The real Bermuda Triangle of a campaign for Palin will be Palin's lack of geopolitical and domestic issues. So she finally left US to visit the troops. I doubt if she even knew the difference between that country and the continent's location. Not only does she have a distinct need for where locations are; she also needs a moral compass. Any hypocrite such as she should never be the person to represent the Face of America. The "Do as I say and not as I Do" brand is going to certainly be questioned as she trots her children and Family Values. She and Gov Sanders as well as other without a moral compass in the "Right Wing Ding Party of No" will need to stop exhorting  tax payer dollars for personal use and accept the fact that the tax dollars those hypocrites used are the dollars to help the impoverished people in their states.
Get out of the oblivion Sick, Clueless, Hedonist Right Wing Dings!
I don't personally think Sotomayor will have too much difficulty with her confirmation.  The party of "NO" intends to make it awkward and uncomfortable for her; but what else have we come to expect?

Clara, get over yourself.  The opposition party always makes it awkward and uncomfortable.  Were you in a coma during the Bork and Thomas hearings?  The Estrada debate?  Don't act like this is a first.
If G. Bush had spent the Iraq War Trillion $$$ cost on a health care plan for our Country, we'd all have health coverage by now.
California Tom

If California paid it's bills, we'd all have health coverage by now.
Sotomayor is a racist.

The Supreme Court said so.

Redhead is clearly not one of those people who believes in the virtue of hard work to get ahead.  She apparently also believes government programs are the answer.
