Sarah Palin's big 'leap'

Posted: Tuesday, June 30, 2009 11:35 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and Alex Beinstein
Below are some more passages from Todd Purdum's critical Vanity Fair piece on Sarah Palin:

Palin

is unlike any other national figure in modern American life—neither Anna Nicole Smith nor Margaret Chase Smith but a phenomenon all her own. The clouds of tabloid conflict and controversy that swirl around her and her extended clan—the surprise pregnancies, the two-bit blood feuds, the tawdry in-laws and common-law kin caught selling drugs or poaching game—give her family a singular status in the rogues’ gallery of political relatives. By comparison, Billy Carter, Donald Nixon, and Roger Clinton seem like avatars of circumspection. Palin’s life has sometimes played out like an unholy amalgam of Desperate Housewives and Northern Exposure...

The consensus is that Palin’s rollout, and even her first television interview, with ABC’s Charles Gibson, conducted after an awkward two-week press blackout to allow for intensive cramming at her home in Wasilla, went more or less fine, though it had its embarrassing moments (“You can’t blink,” Palin said, when Gibson asked if she’d hesitated to accept McCain’s offer) and was much parodied. At least one savvy politician—Barack Obama—believed Palin would never have time to get up to speed. He told his aides that it had taken him four months to learn how to be a national candidate, and added, “I don’t care how talented she is, this is really a leap.”...

None of McCain’s still-loyal soldiers will say negative things about Palin on the record. Even thinking such thoughts privately is painful for them, because there is ultimately no way to read McCain’s selection of Palin as reflecting anything other than an appalling egotism, heedlessness, and lack of judgment in a man whose courage, tenacity, and character they have extravagantly admired—and as reflecting, too, an unsettling willingness on their own part to aid and abet him. They all know that if their candidate—a 72-year-old cancer survivor—had won the presidency, the vice-presidency would be in the hands of a woman who lacked the knowledge, the preparation, the aptitude, and the temperament for the job.

You can talk about this woman for hours, days, months.   The bottom line, OBVIOUS to everyone except those who could never see that Bush was a disaster, is that she was unqualified.  No, she was desperately unqualified.    And to those in the camp I just referenced, save your silly lines about "she had more experience than Barack Obama."   Sarah Palin would be a great talk show host or a great small-town mayor.   She has neither the capacity for, nor it appears the interest in, understanding the big issues of our day.   God help America had that woman been our President now.
Simple summary of Sarah Palin:   Good from far, but far from good.
Redhead is clearly not one of those people who believes in the virtue of hard work to get ahead.  She apparently also believes government programs are the answer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Save the sanctimonious BS!  You & Fran J & the rest of the ditto heads talk out of one side of your mouth that it’s all about HARD WORK yada yada yada.. and that people who are not as fortunate as you are ONLY that way because they’re LAZY and want government handouts or affirmative action etc…!
But being a true BONA FIDE Hypocrite you take a deep breath… and then whine out the other side about the President not delivering the jobs HE promised!! Him COSTING us jobs and all of the rest of your Lord’s squawking points!
So which is it?  If only everything were as simple as the two of you!!!
I work hard for what I have but… I also believe in taking care of my fellow citizens who may need assistance at some time in their lives!  It’s called kindness – you should give it a try!
Come back & play when you’ve garnered an ounce of credibility! Right now your party is STUCK on STUPID!
Oh good! Just when you thought it was going to a boring day, FR comes up with yet another yellow journalism story about Sarah Palin. Letterman on your staff now FR?
US Senator and three time (phony) Purple Heart medalist John Kerry had the gall to cut down Palin the other day while she was overseas increasing the moral of our troops. Palin shot back at Kerry asking him "Why the long face?" Generations of in-breeding caused that for Kerry Sarah.
Boy did we dodge the bullet with THAT one!
I'll never forgive McNasty for putting his party before what was in the best interest of his country!
Country First my A@@!!
I think this article is meant to feed the 'wedge'.
I'm going to pass today.
>>>The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 31% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-three percent (33%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -2. That matches the lowest level yet recorded
FR, why don't you report on the latest Rasmussen poll findings today.  When you're done with the report on the buried EPA report, that is.  Thank you.
Thanks for clarifying my position.  My post was not meant as a compliment to Bush, just an acknowledgement to the righties that it was Bush who initiated the events to allow the withdrawal from Iraq.  The thing that the righties seem to ignore is that we should never have gone into Iraq in the first place.  Let's tally up the "success" of the war in Iraq, shall we?
Number of WMDs found: NONE
Iraqi nuclear capability found: NONE
Terrorist attacks foiled or prevented as a direct result of the war: NONE
Number of US Soldiers killed: 4500+
Number of US Soldiers physically and/or emotionally injured: TENS OF THOUSANDS
Number of Iraqi civilians killed/injured: HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS
Loss of respect around the world because of the war: IMMEASURABLE
Taxpayer money spent on this war: OVER 1 TRILLION AND COUNTING
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Well, in comparison, we see what Obama got us. He's increased the deficit 4x over Bushs record deficit of last year, bought an automaker without one congressional vote being cast, gets roughed up by tin-horn dictators like Chavez and Kim Jung Il, can't figure out who the valid leader of Iran is, supports a dictator in Honduras, every action he takes takes away more money and more freedom from every American, think he's funny, and thinks he the smartest man on the planet (he's not).
So sure, Palin has her faults, but she just couldn't do as badly as Obama has done. Nobody could.
GP NW Indiana-I bet a cupcake that you are one of the 50% of Americans who not only do not pay taxes, but get a welfare check in the form of a 'refundable tax credit' from those who do.
Of course you don't think you are being 'taxed to death'-you live off the labor of others.
no joe, no bo, nj (Sent Tuesday, June 30, 2009 9:45 AM)
----------------------------------------------------
I think I finally have you figured out, you are a self employed baker.
Because with as much as you are wrong, you must be giving out cupcakes by the dozen.
Here's my story...I don't split hairs on the 2% on the bottom of the wage scale that decide to live off the system, just as much as the 2% on the top that decide to "not pay corporate taxes" through evasive methods.  These types are on both ends.
My beef is with not getting what I pay for.  And that's the problem with health care.  When you have a primary and a secondary, and STILL have to pay out of pocket 600.00 dollars on a 2500.00 bill...then the system is broke.
P.S.  I paid about 7000.00 in federal income taxes last year, that was after deductions (not including medicare, SS, and state)...and I work 50-60 hours a week.  I've never in my life claimed unemployment, but I don't down people that do.
Things happen, some things you have no control over...I hope you remember that when karma catches up with you. (although you probably will just blame it on those who "leach off the system")
Lets compare Palin to that gaffe machine of a VP we have today. Biden seems to be kept around for comic relief, but a shudder goes down Americas spine thinking that idiot is one heartbeat away from the big chair.
At least Quayle is off the hook as being the biggest dunce VP ever.
Simple summary of Sarah Palin:   Good from far, but far from good.
Just the Facts
And when compared to Biden . . . . ?
Nothing good about that moron.
All I can say is:  Duh!!??!!  There is no NEWS here. Everyone with half a brain (that would be ME!) saw right away she was a purely political choice designed to woo women voters and energize the male radical-extremist base of the GOP a poster girl to drool over .  Poor Old John McCain had to live with that choice and continually justify/explain it, i.e., he could never leverage it into anything useful.............but it was his choice, wasn't it?
But the again, we've had an array of much-less-than-ready VPs/VP candidate throughout our history.........Spiro Agnew and John Edwards are recent examples that quickly come to mind.
About Sarah Palin?
All I will say is that one decision alone proves beyond a reasonable doubt that John McCain was not fit to be President of the United States. Period.
===============================================
Way to lay the smack down Feisty! :)
And I agree . . . the hypocrisy is breathtaking.
According to Republicans, the only group that deserves government protection is big businesses like health insurance  and drug companies . . . God forbid the government make life better for the people and endanger their PROFITS!
The right to profits on the backs of the sick are guaranteed in the Consititution, dontcha know? (This is sarcasm, lest anyone believe this really is in the Constitution - it's NOT!)
*winky, wink!* also!
Has anyone actually looked at what she has done as mayor and as governor?  What were the "challenges" and what did she do to resolve them?  Was there a budget problem like in other states?  Did she cut spending or raise taxes or do both; what was cut; what taxes were raised?  These need to be answered.  I don't know that she has done much other than shoot off her mouth and sound like an ideologue.  That is not a productive thing for the state or country.
Just the nomination of Sarah Palin for VP of US was an absolute embarrassment to America.  After about of week of getting to know about her, I had felt confident that McCain would not win.  I had faith that the reasoned moderates who used to be his base (and were still considering voting for him despite the many changes he had made), would flee from supporting him due to this choice.  She is an extreme conservative, who still continues to be of unimpressive knowledge.  Why is it that she still hasn't studied and improved her knowledge.  She is either lazy, uncapable, or completely lacks the ability to see that she needs to improve.  Either way, choosing her reflected extremely poorly on McCain's ability to make sound decisions.  And her persistence as a leader in the Republican party, reflects poorly on Republicans.  They created a monster... and they can't put the extreme religious, poorly educated followers back in the hat.
This is so easy...the hillbilly from wasila that took 6 years to get a nothing degree from a nowhere institution has been exposed for the queen of nothing that she is...
The clouds of tabloid conflict and controversy that swirl around her and her extended clan—the surprise pregnancies, the two-bit blood feuds, the tawdry in-laws and common-law kin caught selling drugs or poaching game—give her family a singular status in the rogues’ gallery of political relatives. By comparison, Billy Carter, Donald Nixon, and Roger Clinton seem like avatars of circumspection. Palin’s life has sometimes played out like an unholy amalgam of Desperate Housewives and Northern Exposure...
A walking disaster, an insult to "real intelligent working women with families and real "family values. The dusty husband that served as her personal assistant and political confidant, with an uncanny knact for butting into Alaska's governing business....open wide Sarah, insert feet.
Simply put it would be aeons before Sarah Palin is ready to be a serous President or Vice President.
Someone should compare what democrat liars claim Cheney has made off Haliburton to the money we know democrats stole while controlling the Fannies.
Financial Espionage trials will begin in 2010.
<><><><><<><><><>
Financial Espionage is not as beholden to the predatory wealth Cheney and lives Heartless; Criminal Cheney surreptitiously did about Weapons of Mass Deception to beget as his ill gain. How can you compare lives with deregulations which didn’t intently kill or maim people?  Predatory wealth and lost life is as different as black or white.
Palin shot back at Kerry asking him "Why the long face?" Generations of in-breeding caused that for Kerry Sarah.
And that mentality and replies like it are exactly why she is no way fit to hold public office.  We won't even consider spending our hard earned vacation money touring Alaska until she is out of office - not wasting my time and money where she could get her greedy little fingers on either.
As far as inbread goes - well, that's a stretch considering her "moral" high ground so to speak, abstenance only for everyone's children except her own, right? Is being a grandparent to an illigetimate child now a requirment to be elected governors or running for VP or president on the repugnant ticket?  Seems like it is unless you also count those who are married and engaged at the same time (Rudy, Rudy dresseroody) or Sandford or Ensign?
sorry folks, this is just too funny - what goes around comes around, maybe you repugnants should not have been quite so critical of clinton, spitzer, or edwards as you all have known for sometime your own folks are no where near perfect either, and that includes mccain and reagan - adultry is adultry, and two living spouses is adultry in my Bible every time I read it, which is quite often.
John McCain picked Sarah, not because of egotism, but desperation. He needed something shiny and she was it. Dumb as a post, but shiny.  Actually, it was not John, but his handlers who picked Sarah.  John wanted Lieberman.  No handler will step up to the plate and say who really picked Silly Sarah.
Sarah will get to give a speech at the next GOP convention, but that's about it. Next time around the GOP will find a credible VP.  The GOP will still lose, but they will have a cridible candidate.
Sarah does not have the self discipline to hit the books and learn what is necessary to be a national candidate.
One more thing...we rest our case.
The best thing McCain could have done to help Obama win was to pick Pallin. McCain acted liked he wanted to run and put up the good fight, knowing that he had no chance even with the Pallin Hail Mary!
I am just thankful that the American public, except for the right wing nuts, saw through the charade!
Imagine what Bomber John and Sister Sarah would have said about the Iranian elections.
Allahu akbar!
to 'feisty resdhead': you go girl! put it in a nutshell...
Sarah Palin would have been real change in Washington DC. A completely outside the beltway politician with new and different ideas on what can be done for the country.
Obama is anything but Change. He's just yet another tax and spend liberal statist. We've got plenty of those types in Washington DC today.
But Palin was too different, too much Change. She didn't fit the NY and Washington standard, had a accent that the main stream media didn't like, had ideas that the liberals in the media couldn't understand.
So we end up with Obama. Too bad for the country.
I like Sarah Palin's views but I didn't like her selection as VP Candidate because I thought she was too inexperienced.
But seriously, Biden is a dunce. Palin looks like a great choice compared to him.
She is such a polarizing figure. To me the debate last fall was not whether she was ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency but rather, whether she COULD get to be ready.  I had my doubts at the time.  The recent interviews I saw with her told me that she has not spent the past 7 months since the election boning up on the substantive issues facing our nation but instead has spent the time trying to get back in the media spotlight.
Yet I know there will be folks writing in who think she's the greatest.
I think it's silly how the media can't resist taking shots at Palin.  If they ignored her she would be a non-issue.  She has nothing constructive to say in regards to National policies.  She resorts to picking a fight with Letterman to get face time on the news networks.  She is only on the pages of our papers and news sites because she is viewd as incompetent.  If they like her in Alaska fine let them vote for her, but don't focre us to have to hear about her just because she is an easy target.
More common Sense, Thomas Paine Style: '...Sarah Palin would be a great talk show host or a great small-town mayor...'
"three time (phony) Purple Heart medalist John Kerry" --- GT Tullman, Indiana
Don't bother mentioning Kerry's Silver (saving crew and boat while under fire) AND Bronze (saving a lieutenant while under fire) Stars.
They wouldn't make any difference in your opinions, wouldn't change your mind, or moderate your irrational hatred.
I didn't agree with his statements under VVAW, but he did serve.
Many of us prayed for that "ticket home". Where the hell were you?
I guess it would have been too much to ask that Obama opponents and the media would have questioned Obama's credentials as closely as they questioned Palin's.  Yet it was kid-gloves all around for the treatment of that man. Is it because he was black and any criticism of Obama could be viewed as being racist? Of course! And now we end up with a man as President that doesn't have a clue what he doing. Obama the AA President.
Who needs Vanity Fair? Their circulation is way down too, just like the lib news rags the LA Times, The New York Times and The Boston Globe.
They use Sarah to gain attention and sell mags but, all in all, they're just another fly on the wall.
GT Tuliman has elevated the debate by re-swiftboating Kerry and casting aspersions on his releatives.  That's a great way to start the day, Tuliman.  What's next?  A 9/11 truth commission?
At least she has nice legs  (LOL)
I'm sure that for every Purple Heart awarded, there are some guys that deserved one that didn't get one. Servicemen get our gratitude and respect. period. Don't care about second guessing either McCain/Forrestal or Kerry/Swiftboats.
For me, the calm, mesured and shrewd response of Obama to his multiple crises compares favorably to that of John MCCain in every respect. The 2008 election is over, the Democrats won. We have way more problems to deal with than to keep debating whether Sarah palin coulda, woulda, been a good choice.
This Republican will never vote for a social conservative for higher office.
I will not say that Sarah Palin is the greatest governor or best VP candidate that McCain could've picked.  That being said, I'm still convinced that a large percentage of liberal and media disdain for her stems from her inspiring pro-life stance and her noble decision to have baby Trig despite knowing of his down syndrome during the pregnancy.  We tragically live in a day where female leaders are supposed to fit the feminist stereotype and put job and career above all else, including family. They're not supposed to let "inconveniences" (like an "imperfect baby" ) get in the way of their "success". But Sarah Palin has shattered many of those stereotypes by being a successful, beautiful, and Christian woman who, despite not being perfect like the rest of us, stands by her convictions in a day when many throw them to the wind for political expendiency.  The picture of her holding Trig at the RNC convention was precious and one I'll never forget. Life is precious and she's shown us that.
This woman is nothing but a fraud!  She is not and never will be ready to become the POTUS.  She gets all angry if people from other news organizations other than faux news asks her questions.  She claims to know what it is like to have a child with a disability yet she is rarely seen holding the child.  She claims she knows national and international affairs but can barely answer any question.  She claims she is for less government and yet in her own state she fought for government subsidized checks from the oil industry for every citizen.  She claims she is for family values yet her own family is not a perfect picture.  She claims she gets it but has no clue what she was referring to.  She acts like a rabid dog when things get just barely tough for her. Her husband wanted Alaska to leave the union. Does this sound like anyone that should be the POTUS?  She needs to slink back to Wasilla and leave the country alone!
the woman can't even form a grammatically correct sentence!  how could she claim to be presidential material!  we already had a bozo the clown president the last 8 years! go back to playing the flute and practicing your Miss Wassilla hand wave...yeah, you betcha!
GT Tullman: yes, we know...anything that dares to say something accurate about Sarah Palin is drive-by, gotcha, yellow, elite journalism.   We know.   George Bush was a great President.   Global warming is a hoax.   The world is flat.    The sun revolves around the earth.  Etc, etc, etc.  Any report that says otherwise is just biased.
Democrap Sodier ~
Time to clean up for the Palin Party.
You're not invited, we just want you to clean up the mess afterward.
When McCain picked Palin as his running mate I quickly did as much research as I could. But there wasn't much. All I could quickly learn is that she was extremely conservative and a well liked governor of Alaska.
After just a few minutes of thought, I came to the conclusion that:
McCain picked Palin because she was a woman and he was hoping to get the Clinton votes
McCain picked Palin because the far right thought he was too centered and he wanted that vote.
Then I scratched my head and said, "How on earth can you pick one person that is going to accomplish both of those goals?"
Realizing that I could be wrong, I told my son, "McCain is either genius or an idiot!" I honestly believe that while Palin might not have cost him the election, she certainly hurt his ability to pull in the moderate vote.
After the first few weeks, I was nervous that maybe he pulled a fast one and my guy Obama wasn't going to win. Then I watched her self destruct.
Palin was a poor choice and was certainly not ready for a national campaign. She is way too extreme for me to ever support, and I have serious concerns about her level of intellect. Before George W Bush, I would have said anyone with as little basic intellect and curiosity could never get elected to national office. After W, I am scared that we could actually put someone in the office less qualified, less intelligent, and with less grasp of the real world!
Vanity Fair - that's the left wing rag that gave Valerie Plame such a soft "journalism" piece, right?
GT Tullman: still believing the lies I see. WOW. What rock have you been living under? Or is it that you only watch FOX news? Just so you know, all the things said about Kerry and his service to the nation during Vietnam were completely untrue, lies, fabrications, etc. What is it like to be so utterly hoodwinked?
Also, Letterman is a comedian, entertainer, etc. She made a complete fool of herself over that. Where were the protests and indignation during the campaign when hundreds of jokes like that were told over and over by many comedians and entertainers? The feigned outrage was priceless! Hypocrisy, the number one problem with the repulican party.
The article in Vanity Fair is outstanding. Everyone should read it. Palin is adept at playing the victim of the media and blaming everyone but herself. Her utter disregard for others is dispicable. That plays very well with the under 20% base and this article will not change that as that group could care less about the country. It will, however  bring many things to light for independent and moderate voters, however.
My, my! You leftists at FR (along with Anita and Feisty) are certainly obsessed with Governor Palin.  Could your obsequiously contumelious diatribe mask nothing more than your unabashed jealousy?  Perhaps you welfare types are dancing a Rumplestiltskin tantrum to cover up for your fear of what this beautiful, strong-willed, conservative woman could do to your socialist wet-dreams.  Don't you have a real, present, and obvious joke-o-Biden as current VP to be concerned about.  Governor Palin is the Alaskan governor, not the current VP.  Your fear, envy, and anxiety are showing.  For additional entertainment, a challenge to you for a comparative posting of photographs of Governor Palin, Feisty, Anita, and the FR ilk.  Let's see who is really uggggly, physically and intellectually.
From Talking Points Memo:
'...Homeowner Blasts Sheriff's Department For Raid On Dem Candidate Fundraising Event
By Eric Kleefeld - June 30, 2009, 9:22AM
Shari Barman, the homeowner who was arrested at this past weekend's fundraiser for Democratic Congressional candidate Francine Busby (CA-50), put out a statement yesterday evening. She condemns the sheriff's department's raid as having been based on a non-legitimate noise complaint by a politically-motivated neighbor, who had allegedly yelled anti-gay slurs towards the event, and she accuses the arresting deputy of having committed unprovoked brutality.
Key quote:
Contrary to what has been reported, I did not in any manner strike Deputy Abbott. He and I had only been conversing for a minute or two when he grabbed my arm, twisted it behind me and threw me on the floor. His actions were completely unexpected, excessive and I believe, unwarranted. The remaining guests who witnessed what occurred and who were pepper sprayed were stunned and outraged.
Also contrary to what has been reported, this was the first time any deputy had been to my home that evening. I believe the noise complaint to the police may have been politically motivated based on the shouting we heard during Ms. Busby's speech.
In my opinion the charges brought against me are unfounded and were brought only in order to cover up Deputy Abbott's unprofessional behavior. What happened in our home was shocking and I don't believe would have happened had the situation been handled properly...'
I hope John McCain Denounces this in the STRONGEST TERMS !!
Let's bring DEMOCRACY to San Diego !!
