First thoughts: Palin-palooza

*** Palin-palooza: So much for an uneventful July 4 holiday weekend, huh? The news Friday that Sarah Palin not only won’t run for re-election in 2010 (which wasn’t much of a surprise), but would also be resigning from office later this month (a complete shocker) was the latest drama to surround the former Republican presidential running mate. The questions on everyone’s mind: Does this mean she WON’T be running for president in 2012? Or WILL she be running? And if so, does resigning 2 ½ years into her first statewide political term strengthen her hand or seriously weaken it? Well, in a July 4 posting on her Facebook page, she sure sounded like someone with dreams of the Oval Office dancing in her head. “[T]hough it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make,” she wrote. Palin also fired off this Twitter message yesterday: "Critics are spinning, so hang in there as they feed false info on the right decision made as I enter last yr in office to not run again..."

*** Not Obama or Nixon: When she wrote that it’s “honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling,” Palin might very well have been referring to Obama, who began running for president just after two years into his first U.S. Senate term. But there is one big difference between the two: Obama’s national reputation was pristine from the moment he gave that 2004 convention speech to his presidential announcement, while Palin’s image (after the Bristol-Levi breakup, the feud with David Letterman, and that devastating Vanity Fair piece) is more of mixed bag. On Sunday, the New York Times also compared her decision to resign to Richard Nixon’s exodus from politics before winning the ’68 presidential election. But the difference between the two is that Nixon served eight years as vice president, two years as a U.S. senator, and four years as a congressman, while Palin has served in statewide office for just 2 ½ years. Indeed, Palin’s decision to resign might only reinforce the perception that she’s not a serious politician with the policy chops to be president in these serious times.

Video: William Kristol of “The Weekly Standard” talks with TODAY’s Natalie Morales about the likelihood of a Sarah Palin run for the White House in 2012.

*** And I did it my way: All that said, the normal political rules don’t seem to apply to Palin. Once removed from office, she will be flooded with requests for speaking engagements, and will turn mundane GOP congressional events into exciting rallies that draw her most ardent supporters (as well as those turning out to see a potential car wreck). In short, Palin's resignation was all about self-interest -- improving her financial standing and her political standing as the Republicans' biggest celebrity. And given her appeal to the GOP base, she knows she can do this her way. Palin definitely has a future as a conservative political celebrity, but does she risk her influence on a presidential run? She could end up having a parallel career to a Pat Buchanan -- active commentator with a loyal following and an occasional (but not successful) presidential candidate. Who has more to fear from Sarah Palin? Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty? Or Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity?

*** Geography and the calendar: There are two other legitimate reasons for Palin’s resignation, if she’s planning a presidential bid. One is geography. As political analyst Charlie Cook tells First Read, running for president was hard enough for Bill Clinton (in ’92 from Little Rock) and for George W. Bush (in ’00 from Austin), and it’s probably even harder now that campaigns have begun earlier and have become more expensive. So just think about the challenges of running for president in 2012 from Juneau. “Someone might be an effective governor or a serious candidate but not both,” Cook says. Second, Obama launched his presidential bid in Feb. 2007. If she used that same time frame, Palin would announce in Feb. 2011 -- just one month after she would have completed her first term. That's not nearly enough time to make money in the private sector, or build a national campaign team through considerable political travel in the Lower 48. But writing in Slate, Bruce Reed noted that politicians who have quit their day jobs to run for president (Bob Dole, Mitt Romney, Bill Bradley, John Edwards) haven’t been all that successful. Running while still holding office (Clinton, Bush 43, Obama) does still appear to be the better way to go.

*** Just askin': Who thought, as of early last week, that Sarah Palin would be resigning from office before Mark Sanford (we think)?

*** Obama in Russia: Turning to non-Palin news, President Obama already has arrived in Moscow, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Russian Soldier, and met with Russian President Medvedev at the Kremlin. At 10:50 am ET, the two leaders hold a joint press conference (although this appears to be running late). And afterwards, Obama greets U.S. embassy personnel and attends a dinner hosted by Medvedev. Of course, there will be plenty of glad-handing when Obama and Medvedev announce their nuclear-arms agreement of sorts. But the fine print needs to be worked out. And, frankly, it seems as if things already aren't going as well as perhaps the Obama administration originally hoped it would. In the last few days, in fact, it has been lowering expectations for this meeting. The two will announce the easy stuff today, including a framework for continued negotiations on nuclear arms reduction, as well as official Russian permission to use their air space for our military campaign in Afghanistan. But it's the hard stuff -- missile defense and Iran -- that will get most of the attention from the press, and there’s little evidence of progress from either side on these issues.

Video: President Obama and his family have arrived in Moscow for a U.S.-Russia summit. NBC’s Savannah Guthrie reports.

*** From Russia with love? Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Obama’s Russia trip is the semi-cold reception he’s probably going to receive. It's not the Cold War, but it's not yet warm. Is it partly cloudy with a chance of cold or partly sunny with a chance of warmth? You decide. Indeed, today's early events were as gray and understated as the grayness of this city right now. The mood of the relationship and the weather do seem to match.

*** The world is flat watch: While the issues are completely unrelated, keep an eye on three hot spots today: China, Honduras, and Iran. All three countries are experiencing some domestic tumult -- ethnic clashes in China, the coup in Honduras, and of course the aftermath of the disputed election in Iran. As Buffalo Springfield famously noted, “There's something happenin' here, what it is ain't exactly clear.” Then again, this could simply be a result of the world being flat, so we see and hear about everything now.

*** $1.4 million a day? Wow. Finally, Congress returns this week from its July 4 recess, and its main work between now and August will be hammering out the details on health-care reform. Be sure to check out today’s Washington Post story on the health-care lobbying effort, which notes that the health industry has hired “more than 350 former government staff members and retired members of Congress in hopes of influencing their old bosses and colleagues,” and that it’s spending more than $1.4 million a day on lobbying. Wow, is there any way to describe this story other than the health-care industry has hired, LITERALLY, an army of lobbyists? (Speaking of lobbyists, Roll Call has an interesting story about which Democratic lobbyists have secured the best access to the White House. Here's a hint: They have ties to Daschle and Gephardt.) In other congressional news, it looks like Al Franken will be seated on Tuesday, and his nameplate outside his office will be installed today.  and

2. Gasoline averaging $3 per gallon.

(b) Gasoline won't go over $3 a gallon. the national average is at $2.63 a gallon and during summer months gas always increases and decreases in August. It isn’t $5.00 a gallon is is?

=====================

I agree with this. Economic activity and production is heading to all time lows. When unemployment is so high, there is no one producing anything, and fuel use goes way down. Too bad that people that are un-employed (10%) or under-employed (another 10%) can't afford the gas either way.
I think  sad Sarah because quit for 2 reasons.
1. The indictments looming over her head
2. She can't make money as governor for her conservative host talks, book deals, and who knows what else; maybe womens'  basketball.

I also think she has a narcissistic complex, is crazy and a lying hypocrite.
Buchanan was lamenting about the beating Palin's kids were taking in the media as an excuse for Palin. However, she was the one that dragged her pregnant child before the world! It was her responsibilty to protect her kids. She had a choice between their well being, and her own ambition. The fact that her children suffered humilation is her, and Todd's fault.

And you may have noticed that the entire family was there when she resigned. In fact, from the camera angle of the images I saw, it looked like Piper (the youngest daughter) was in front of the podium.

One thing is for sure, her antics will continue to amuse and confound people!
Joe Don -- thanks for the heads up. It's fixed.
Previous Post:  Obama did not resign his seat in the senate. While campaigning, he returned to Congress and voted many times.

Yeah he voted "present."

And Obama is still voting 'Present' on Iran and Honduras. No wait, on Honduras he voted along with the rest of the dictators of the world. Hillary must be feeding him bad intel.

Hope everyone had a terrific July 4th weekend.  Beautiful weather the week before and since but it poured buckets and was pretty chilly in Iowa July 4th.  Fortunately, it stopped for the late afternoon picnics, parades and fireworks.

Palin, the drama queen.  Most of her statement made no sense whatsoever.  Yes, candidates have left office to pursue the presidency but the difference I have seen is that most of the governors finish their terms of office first, and then pursue the future (like Pawlenty).  Pres Obama and other candidates continued to return to the Senate for important votes and kept in touch with legislative work.  Personally, this is WAY TOO EARLY to start campaigning for 2012.  We wonder why nothing gets done in Washington.  The media could do Americans a great deal of good if they stopped discussing 2012, because it has no relevance to today.  Guess it makes good chatter.

Should be an interesting two days in Russia for our president.  Have not seen much coverage yet but maybe that will be later today.  It was nice to see the entire family arrive.  What a great opportunity for the girls.  No doubt there will be something significant even if it is just a start.

$1.4 million a day lobbying against health care reform.  Every American should be discussing why the private insurance sector is so against a public option and most of us know the answer.  Private insurance might have to be competitive and fair to its clients rather than dictators of our health.

$1.4M a day for health care lobbying? That's over $1B in just two years. Maybe the key to cutting health care costs is to eliminate the lobbyists!

Obama is working on it. It's that pesky first amendment that keeps getting in the way though.
From BLOOMBERG.COM:

The California morass has Democrats in Washington trembling. If Obama’s health-care plan passes, then we may well end up paying for it with federal slips of paper worth less than California’s IOU's. Obama has bet everything on passing health care this year. The publicity surrounding the California debt fiasco almost assures his resounding defeat.

It takes years to make a California debacle, but the recipe is simple. All you need is two political parties that are always willing to offer easy government solutions for every need & want of the voters, but never willing to make the tough decisions necessary to finance the government largess.

California has engaged in an orgy of spending ---  but, compared with our federal government, its legislators should feel chaste. The California deficit this year is now north of $26 billion. --- The U.S. federal deficit will be, according to the latest numbers, almost 70 times larger.

The federal picture is so bleak because the Obama administration is the most 'fiscally irresponsible' in the history of the U.S.  Obama has taken Bush’s inattention to deficits and elevated it to an art form.

The Obama administration has no shame, and is willing to abandon reason altogether to achieve its "short-term political" goals.

Obama has no story. Nobody believes that his unprecedented "expansion of the welfare state" will lead to enough economic growth. Nobody believes that it will pay for itself. Everyone understands that higher spending today begets higher spending tomorrow. That means that his economic strategy simply doesn’t add up.

(OBAMA-NOMICS IS ALL ABOUT INCREASING HIS POWER  THAT'S WHY IT LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE FASCISM.)
See liberals, there are more important things in life then politics, like family. With liberals it's all about power what ever the cost.
Jason S, Lawton, Texas (Sent Monday, July 06, 2009 9:32 AM)

Jason, if you run on family values and members of your party commit the very same acts that you blasted the others for, you get hammered period!!!!!!You can't just say that well it was in time of weakness or just needed to blow some steam off.  If you can't LEAD BY EXAMPLE, then don't bring it up.  Palin also ran on family values and teen abstinance and a whole host of other issues that we are becoming to understand that even her own life did not emulate the things she touted.  Go ahead and say that the other news organizations are printing hatred but the rest of the world does not listen to faux noise.  She blasted people and her own life was not what she stated.  SO YES SHE DESERVED WHAT TOOK PLACE!!!!You can't blast people and not expect to take flack!!!!The old addage comes to mind If you can't take it, then don't dish it out! and another one If you can't do the walk, then don't do the talk!!!!!
Anita, what do you mean "unemployment was expected to rise over 10%?"
Obama said it wouldn't go over 8% if the stmulus was passed.

Amen! The Obama cheerleaders externalize the blame for everything, nothing but excuses and Bush finger-pointing. Barack "No Accountability" Obama!

Obama Lie #1- Obama said his tax plan would reduce taxes for 95 percent of working families. "If you are a family making less than $250,000 a year, you will not see your taxes go up," Obama said repeatedly on the campaign trail last year.

Obamas proposed cap and trade carbon tax would be an extremely regressive energy tax on ALL Americans. Heating costs, food costs and gasoline prices would rise dramatically in spite of the BS from these leftist think tanks trying to sugar coat it otherwise.

Obama Lie #2 - "I'll make oil companies like Exxon pay a tax on their windfall profits, and we'll use the money to help families pay for their skyrocketing energy costs and other bills," Obama said.

Not a dime has been “redistributed”. Keep your promise Barack, spread that wealth around. Gas is almost $3/gal! Wait until Americans see their heating bill this winter.

Obama Lie #3 – Obama said he wanted a bill with shovel-ready civil construction projects on his desk to sign immediately upon taking office.

So far only $15 billion has been approved for about 4,000 projects and STILL unemployment in the heavy construction sector has continued to rise through the second quarter of 2009. But Obama pledged $ 62 Billion over the next 10 years for more foreign aid! Foreign aid! Four times as much money given away to ungrateful foreigners while GM and Ford languish and America’s roads, bridges and ports crumble in massive disrepair.

Obama Lie #4 – If we don’t pass the Stimulus Package, unemployment will go over 8%.

Well, it is over 10% now and climbing. There is reason to believe the numbers are even worse but are being suppressed by the Obama Administration and their gutless propaganda mouthpieces in the mainstream press.

If I checked FR once over the weekend, I checked it a thousand times. Welcome back friends.

No life?
Glad to see that First Read here has hit the nail on the head that Quitter Palin's resignation is all about self interest.  Excellent article Chuck, Mark, Domenico and Ali!  It's obvious that Sinner Sarah is merely the Paris Hilton of politics and now she's off to make the big bucks as one of Rupert's Puppets at the televised insane asylum known as fox and freaks.  She cut and run when the going got tough and didn't want to be a lame duck governor without realizing she's always been a lame duck.

Hey Chuck Todd I loved your revelation last week on Hardball that you and I have somnething else in common to liking politics, namely we're both Dodgers fans.  Also kudos to Chuck for doing such a great job last week subbing for Chris as Hardball has never been so enjoyable.  I bet the First Read crew was groaning and moaning when they were off for the day Friday on a well deserved break and then boom comes the Quitter Palin bombshell.

I'm not too sure the world is flat analogy works, I'm thining more like the world is webbed now and it's the Information Age now.  I did like the Buffalo
Springfield nod as it sure isn't clear anymore what the heck is happening on planet earth with all the crazy happenings.

In Chuck Todd We Trust!
Go Dodgers!
I think her actions just gave us a big hint about the danger of her in public office:
She is a QUITTER!
Just think if she was elected to higher office and critics heated up against her,,,,,,
She would QUIT!
Wake up folks, take the hint, be happy we have been warned.
just my thoughts
Oh Chuck, c'mon!  Obama's national reputation was pristine when he quit the Senate?  When are you going to stop serving as captain of the Obama-Zombie cheerleading squad?  A better question: why do I still read your idiotic column?
What is truly amazing is that Palin believes that she can just abandon her "beloved" constituents in Alaska and run for president in a year, confident that everyone will forget whatever lines she tried to sell in July of 2009.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
Palin: Let her run...she's an easy loss for the Dems if the Republicans go there.  Though why anyone would give $ to a quitter is baffling.  Personally, I think she's done with politics and her "higher calling" means she and Todd are setting themselves up to be the next Osteens.  They'd be billionaires inside of a couple years and get to side step the political press--but keep all the adoration at speaking events.  No need to make real sense, either.  No bigger rip off and scam than that kind of psuedo-religion...and they already have the audience and support, followed by the hope that they could throw that fervor behind any candidate they chose...as long as the price is right.  Coming soon to a mega-stadium in the bible belt...
Sarah Palin wants to call her own plays. If she was ever to rise to a higher office, I see more a George W. than President Obama style in that she wants to run the show and make the decisions on her own, like Bush, rather than surround herself with a wide array of qualified advisers, listen to their variety of opinions, then form a decision like the present president.
Both styles have their advantages. In a military crisis, lightening fast decisions must be made. With  economic problems, a more deliberate course allows for safer changes in direction.
That said, I seriously believe the former Alaska governor has personality issues that border on a disorder. I will leave it to those with more initials after their name than I have to make the diagnosis, but listen to her dialogue filled with I and me and it is apparent she is full of herself.

It was obvious by her scattered delivery at her press conference that she was not using a teleprompter. This may have been a tip from Rush or Hannity, but it was a poor choice. More speeches like this should show the advantages of President Obama's skillful use of the modern day equivalent of 3" by 5" cards will hopefully kill the absurd teleprompter issue once and for all, but I doubt it.

Just pray that it will be Fox that offers her employment, because I fear any other news source will seriously lose credibility. She will pull the ratings, though, just as she is the republican Party's most effective fundraiser. Also, let's hope she has learned to keep her children out of the spotlight...
*** And I did it my way: Who has more to fear from Sarah Palin? Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty? Or Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity?

The Joker...Guys, I think that Lushy Rushie has his hands in this doggie doo. He was too much of a champion of her's to be competion. If you look back at the last "gathering" and the speech debacle with Newt. Rush "insisted" that she be apart of the festivities...nay, made them include her.

This woamn is out for herself and I've said it time and time again. She has no shame, it's all about her.

Answer:
I don't recall President Obama saying that unemployment wouldn't go over 8%. You had better produce the facts. There was no way that he or anyone else could make that prediction.

I want facts ONLY...no rehetoric... He didn't guarantee the stimulas, nor did he guarantee how long it would take to get into the economy. Economist did the singing. President implored both house to act quickly to pass it. He cautioned each day's delay being devastating on the economy's up turn. Did he not?

Once again the left-wing droids are out and probably convincing those with less intelligence then themselves (pretty easy to find these days) that Palin is "gone fishing...out to lunch...don't have a clue etc etc). What do they do, find a air-head Democratic politician in Alaska that will say that ALASKANS say that Palin is "disengaged".  What a crock. The only people in this country that are disengaged are those that are disengaged from reality when they elected a socialist disguised as a black Jimmy Carter for President.  People like Sarah Palin drive them up a wall, and they, like the worthless journalists who continue to ignore the disasters the current administration is seeding - and sowing - worldwide.  There is more intergrity, honesty, and traditional love of America in Sarah Palin's little toe than in most of the current Congress - and they know it.  THATS why the PSYOP demonizing, demeaning, and subverting attacks towards her will continue for the rest of her life, and THATs why I hope she DOES run for office. She will have my vote for sure!
I know why Quitter Palin cut and ran when she did, she knew that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert were on vacation this week and couldn't make fun of her breaking news.  She couldn't take the heat from the free liberal media exposing her for the fraud she is.  In trying to bury her resignation screech on a holiday Friday she only guaranteed her story would have legs this week.  I'm sure we'll find out that she had to quit because she knew her last 1.5 years would have exposed her as incompetent as can be.  Now she can be the Paris Hilton of the evil elephants as she's going to become one of Rupert's Puppets at the televised insane asylum known as fox and freaks.

There's some idiot advisor of Quitter Palin on Morning Meeting saying that Quitter Palin can work a crowd and get them all in a frenzy, yeah and so could Adolph Hitler.  Sinner Sarah only appeals to the evangelical christian lunatic fringe and she's always been on the fringe.  She'll never fool Mainstream America into believing her pack of feel good self serving lies.

Another Evil Elephant Bites the Dust!
