Imperial powers have much in common

From NBC’s Albert Oetgen
MOSCOW, Sunday, July 5th -- It's a very gray day in this very gray city.

A planeload of reporters arrived here this afternoon in advance of President Obama's first trip to Russia as chief executive, full of anticipation and American preconceptions about this vast and complicated land.

Video: Mark Ames, who lived in and reported in Russia, former ambassador to the Soviet Union Jack Matlock, and NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie in Moscow talk about Obama’s trip to Russia.

As the 767 widebody banked on its final approach to Vnukovo Airport, acres and acres of dull concrete high-rise apartment buildings loomed in the middle distance, echoes of Soviet-era regimentation and Cold War discipline, reminders that the blinding speed of change in the 21st Century -- of any century -- can never erase the indelible effects of history and experience.

Inside the terminal, reporters were hustled through customs. Efficient uniformed clerks rarely made eye contact, conjuring the persistent, lingering feelings of mistrust that aging Baby Boomers learned during the early days of the Cold War when, as impressionable schoolchildren, they were taught the absurd lesson that crouching under classroom desks could somehow protect them from nuclear fallout.

The walk from customs to the busses assembled to take the press corps to a downtown hotel involved a series of 90-degree turns monitored by escorts. The route coursed through a small crowd of Muscovites waiting for family and friends to make their way out of the maze of corridors leading to the airport gates.

One of the turns made no sense. There was a clear diagonal shortcut through the crowd. But when two reporters tried to take it, armed police instantly materialized, herding them back onto the pre-assigned route with the brutal efficiency and mind-numbing lack of imagination that over empowered Transportation Safety Administration police display every day in American airports.

Imperialist powers, it turns out, have much in common, regardless of the current state of their affairs or the mercurial patterns of history. The grayness of Moscow, and its uniformed police, tracks perfectly with the Washington summer to date.

Dull gray - that is exactly what Obama is trying to make the United States. This is what government contol of everything gets you - dull gray.

Obama must think he's in utopia today.
Where exactly is the United States being imperialistic?
Hey Obama, when are you going to "START" creating those jobs??  I need a JOB now!!!

hey man there are still some rightwingnuts who actually still believe nonsense like some can survive a nuclear war and carry on the American way...
We really should just relax our TSA restrictions in America. With Obama, we're friends with everyone, and no one would ever think of harming us again.

How true with one exception; Russia has oil resources America doesn't.
however it's still nice to know the world is no longer bi-polar.
Hm...this doesn't sound like somewhere I would be excited to visit.  But I'm glad our CIC is.  Part of his job and all.  I bet he gets to visit some really nice places there tho, what we normal citizens wouldn't.  I always worried about Shrub's trips abroad, afraid he was gonna open his mouth.  I'm much more happy with our Pres and the job he's doing.  Don't agree with all his decisions, am keeping my fingers crossed.  Being patient, for some is hard.  We are such an instant gratification country.
It's good to see an American President finally welcomed to Moscow, but then that's what happens when we have an intelligent president who thinks before he speaks.  I like how President Obama has changed the dynamics of our relations with Russia from one of mistrust to one of building trust.  After 8 years of arrongant ignorant blowharding that put our relations with Russia inthe deep freeze Obama is thawing it with his awesome diplomacy, with help from our excellent Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

We can only hope that Barack is successful in restarting the START talks so that we see a reduction in nuclear weapons.  I hope that Barack scraps that idiotic missile shield nonsense in Europe that has so peeved Russia.  Now we're getting cooperation from Russia on dealing with Little Kim of North Korea, so unlike the past 8 years of them blocking our every attempt at sanctions because they were put off by Clueless George.

The Wasilla Hillbilly may think that she's getting out of the spotlight by resigning but we Democrats will always kick her around.

In Obama We Trust!
Anita, Birmingham, Alabama: I don't recall President Obama saying that unemployment wouldn't go over 8%.

Then you weren't listening. He said so when rushing Congress through his stimulus bill back in February. He used it as a scare tactic to get Congress to vote for the bill, even though they hadn't had time to read it - which is becoming a trend in Congress.
It is difficult to be a democracy when you have had a thousand years or more of totalitarian rule. It will take generations before the Russian people are fully free. We can, however, take comfort in knowing they are freer now than at any time in their previous history.

I don't understand the reference to imperialistic? They don't call us  that any more because the Communists are no longer in charge.

Good lord, Mr. Montanaro-you should enter this post in the Bulwer-Lyton competition.  It's sure to win the purple prose award this year.  I may submit it for you.

Here's a post I'd like to read:  last week, it came to light that the White House contacts reporters the night before press conferences, to tell them they will be called on, and to tell them what topic they are to ask a question on.

Even Nixon couldn't control the press this way.

Chuck Todd's lame 'what kind of sacrifices do you want to ask us to make' now makes sense.

And you should all be ashamed of yourselves for selling out your constitutionally protected rights.
It's good to see an American President finally welcomed to Moscow - Eric Salinas CA

The Russians always greet one of their own warmly. Obama will be drinking vodka and dancing the Trokia in a couple of hours. Should make for good video.
He still has to clean up the Bushantics these people are will and ready to work with our CIC. Nice to see again,,,isn't it.

Beverly in Chicago (Sent Monday, July 06, 2009 10:27 AM)

Actually, America has HUGE oil reserves - but idiots like yourself would rather buy oil from terrorists and dictators instead of using our own.

Because, its better for the dictators and terrorists to have the money than those "greed" american oil companies - you know - the same oil companies that helped your 401K grow to record levels 2 years ago!!!

But, you guys hate american companies and would rather support Iran and other Terrorist Dictators -
We call you TRAITOR
Beverly, America has PLENTY of oil resources.  But our government refuses to let us use them.
Now we're getting cooperation from Russia on dealing with Little Kim of North Korea, so unlike the past 8 years of them blocking our every attempt at sanctions because they were put off by Clueless George. Eric, Salinas, CA

Yes, the dramatically increased testing of long range missiles, by North Korea is bound to make the world a safer place. Yep, so unlike the past 8 years. Appolagizing to the world, has dictators everwhere hugging Obama, surrendering power to the people. Well, I guess the only true part of that is that testing of missiles increased by Lil Kim. And the UN sanctions are even less meaningful than before. I don't know how some arrive at the conclusion that Obama being completely ignored is a diplomatic success. What is it you see russia doing to resolve the issue?
While Russia is not the super power it once was, they have plenty of nucs that need to be either disposed of or secured. Their economy is in bad shape so they may be a little friendlier this round.

I am glad that the President seeks to engage the world instead of try to dictate to them.

As the to the snarky jerks with their stupid one liners, stay under you desks children and remove your thumbs from what whichever orifice they are inserted in!

HMI - MI : '...Where exactly is the United States being imperialistic?...'

Ummmm, the overthorow of the Iraqi government
'Regime change', remember that ?
In Palestine, Venezuela, Iraq, Nicargua....
Wanting to control other nations....
(Viet Nam, Chile, Dominican Republic...)

The Soviet Union and the United States both invaded Afghanistan
Each for their own reasons

PUTIN WILL EAT OBAMA FOR LUNCH.

GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT OBAMA WILL GIVE AWAY TO RUSSIA FOR A PHOTO OPPORTUNITY.

K. Tandy, Tennessee

What?  No linky to where it "said" that?  Oh, maybe because you made it up, like so many other things the right wing nutjobs make up about Obama...
"Actually, America has HUGE oil reserves - but idiots like yourself would rather buy oil from terrorists and dictators instead of using our own.
BoBo has got to GoGo"

Wow - you guys don't even know your facts:

First off, we're 14th in oil reserves: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_oil_res-energy-oil-reserves
Not to mention the fact we use the MOST oil of any nation.  So it takes far more than what we have to supply us with our unquenchable thirst for the stuff.  Basic math, dude.

Second: Oil companies have leases on land they can drill on RIGHT NOW - (anytime guys?), but on 68 million acres of leases they DON'T.  Why?  Beats me.  What's holding them up?  Go ahead and drill baby drill!!

Get your facts straight, people.
