Obama adviser: Plan for second stimulus

From NBC's Alex Beinstein
Lots of people are asking if there might be a second stimulus coming down the pipe.

In fact, another Obama adviser makes mention of one: Per Reuters, Obama economic adviser Laura Tyson said at a seminar in Singapore, "We should be planning on a contingency basis for a second round of stimulus. ... The stimulus is performing close to expectations but not in timing." Reuters: "Addressing a seminar in Singapore, Tyson said she felt the first round of stimulus aimed to prop up the economy had been slightly smaller than she would have liked and that a possible second round should be directed at infrastructure investment."

Video: Austan Goolsbee, of the White House Council of Economic Advisors, discusses whether a second stimulus package is needed to pull the country out of recession.

Geoge Got His Gun?
The New York Times: "And so when the library for George W. Bush opens in 2013 on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, visitors will most likely get to see one of his most treasured items: Saddam Hussein’s pistol. The gun, a 9 millimeter Glock 18C, was found in the spider hole where the Iraqi leader was captured in December 2003 by Delta Force soldiers, four of whom later presented the pistol to Mr. Bush. Among the thousands of gifts Mr. Bush received as president, the gun became a favorite, a reminder of the pinnacle moment of the Iraq war, according to friends and long-time associates."

Video: Guest host Alison Stewart reports on how Saddam Hussein’s gun might be displayed at President George W. Bush’s library.

Obama's Olympic Dreams
ESPN reports that President Obama cut a two-minute video -- shot at the White House -- promoting Chicago's bid for the Olympics, that "was shown during a presentation by Chicago bid leaders at a meeting of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa in Abuja, Nigeria." Obama said: If Chicago is selected for this honor, we will ensure that the Olympics and Paralympic Games are a key priority for our nation. ... You can count on our government to work as a committed partner in Chicago's quest to host a great and historic games and strengthen the Olympic movement worldwide. ... As President, I see the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games as an opportunity for America to reach out and renew our bonds of friendship around the world -- to welcome the world to our shores with open arms."

What, $800billion wasn't enough?

The cant from this administration is simply amazing.  When their plans fail, they do not learn from the failure-they repeat it.

I am beginning to believe that these people are insane.  Don't believe me?

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different outcome'  Mark Twain.
Until we have disbursed $400 billion of the existing stimulus, I will NOT be on board for another one.

Healthcare Reform is the number one priority - we need to stay focused here!
Quinnipiac:  President Barack Obama gets a lackluster 49 - 44 percent approval rating in Ohio, considered by many to be the most important swing state in a presidential election, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This is President Obama's lowest approval rating in any national or statewide Quinnipiac University poll since he was inaugurated and is down from 62 - 31 percent in a May 6 survey

I guess I'm not the only Ohioan waking up.

It would probably to more to help the economy and settle markets if they canceled the 90% of the first porkulus bill. A least other countries might not run away from buying our debt.
If Barrys idea of stimulus is to give the losers of this nation more of my money then no thanks.
No we dont need another stimulus, audit what you gave out and i think you will find that were getting ripped off.....Gee i thought biden was overseeing this...Figures politics as usual....You proved it to me when you hired your lobbyist and gave what you call your big money raisers ambasadorships, while the average american gets screwed thru your lies and misleading statements...I wonder how many of ous independents are now discouraged when we voted for change........
I can't beleive we would even consider another stimulus. The first one failed, a second will fail. And who the hell will lend us the money? i doubt China will, or will we just print some more and worry about the inflation later? This is unbeleivable!
Wrong yet again there NoJo...

It was Einstein that said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over and expecting a different outcome...

Still playin lose & fast with the facts you silly conservatives!
Will the 2nd "stimulus" package provide jobs FOR REAL this time???  I need a job, Obama.  NOW.
Pretty cool that George W. got that pistol.  That will be a fine display at the library.
THIS TIME listen to Paul Krugman, Robert Reich, James Galbraith and Joseph Stiglitz

Helping the states isn't chic or popular
But, it's needed
Make the states balance their budgets FIRST
Then Help

Unemployment payments and Food Stamps help those out of work
Focus on real INFRASTRUCTURE, storm drains, sewers, roads, bridges, subways

Most Importantly:  FORGET BI-PARTISAN !!!
Enact a Democratic Stimulus
Wouldn't this be the fourth or fifth round of stimulus?  Let's there was Bush's $600 check last summer, and then Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and then TARP, and Then The first Obama Stimulus, and then this new one...yeah this would be number five.  Hasn't the Federal Government run out of people to stimulate yet?
I love how the media is trying to work everyone into a frenzy about a "second stimulus" . . . completely ignoring the word "contingency" . . . as in "Plan B" not "Plan A" . . . considering that Plan A hasn't even been fully implemented yet . . . once again, much ado about nothing.

From previous post:

Jonathan,

Thanks for your post. I agree with you that our current financial system is filled with problems and inefficiencies that could be improved.

Many of your suggestions (with the obvious exception of privatizing Social Security - can't be "secure" if we are betting on the ponies with the money, eh?) sound good.

But here is where I am coming from:

I don't think that the average American citizen, working a job, paying their taxes, paying their health insurance premiums, and fighting our wars, should have to continue to bear the brunt of the downfalls of our economic system (being laid off, being denied benefits, and being taken advantage of) while our elected officials casually pontificate about it all.

This is why I say we need healthcare reform NOW, we need consumer protection against the financial special interests NOW, and once these things are DONE, then whatever money is left (if any money is left) can be distributed as needed.

The American people are tired of waiting for our government to use our money to protect and serve us.

Seems only reasonable to me.

P.S. I let the whole "Obama said unemployment would only be 8%" spin go on for WEEKS, but once I heard VP Biden being questioned about it on Sunday, I figured it was time for SOMEBODY to correct the record, so I did.

Healthcare reform is dead with the proposal for a second stimulus package, not that it wasn't on the edge to begin with. Just how much debt does Obama think the taxpayers can carry? We're losing jobs at a rate of 400,000 a month, and Obama is loading up peoples and businesses taxes with Cap&Trade along with Healthcare. The first stimulus bill hasn't even been added to the peoples taxes yet, that was all borrowed money.

Obama has no sense for the common man, the common business owner. He is totally clueless about the economy and it's obvious he is not the least bit concerned about increasing unemployment.

How Obama can fail so much so quickly is mind-boggling.
After examining the thousands of gifts that President Bush received, it was concluded that NO tacky DVD sets were discovered.

You should do some research. According to exit poll information, 52% of those making over $200k a year voted for President Obama. So that means the majority of the "rich" people in this country voted for President Obama. That hardly qualifies as poor and lazy!

Warren Buffett voted for Obama. In Buffett's last interview regarding Obama, he seems to have regretted that choice. Obama ran as a slightly left moderate on economic issues. At no time did Obama talk about how much debt he'd add to the country in such a short time. And it's not just one or two things in Obama's economic agenda that show him to be a hard leftist, it's all of them. Everything Obama does requires massive spending and massive federal government takeover/taxing of private industry.

Goes to show you, even Warren Buffett makes mistakes. Big mistakes.
That is won expensive Gun,ya got there little Georgie.4000+ lives where lost so you could play war with Dead eye DICK.Trillions spent so you could go after Saddam,Daddys little boy.And that will be what is to show for all the destroyed lives, the hardship ,the pain, the mamed, the leg less, the arms, now made of plastic, and for what,so Little could be a WAR president,Sick Bass-turd.
I would doubt very seriously that the present administration would really consider another "Stimulus" package, especially since it has not fully used the current one.  I also would not support another Stimulus package.

Michelle,  What did you wake up too?  Do you really believe that the past administration had no affect on the current conditions in Ohio?  Do you think the current administration is not trying to improve conditions?  Lets be more specific please.
FR: "...a possible second round [of stimulus] should be directed at infrastructure investment."

Duhhhh, wasn't the first round supposed to be targeted at infrastructure?  We all se how that turned out.  And we're supposed to trust these jokers to spend more money we don't have?  We may have come to the brink of the economic abyss on Bush's watch, but the Obama folks seem headed towards pushing us over the edge.  Think even some of the superhero's drone supporters will oppose him on this one?  You betcha.

Another stimulus is supported by most Americans and will probably keep unemployment under 10-11 percent. Good call.

Fiesty-sorry about the missed credit.

Doesn't change the facts, though, does it?
I'm not sure we need a second stimulus and I can't imagine that the votes are there to get it through congress. Let's give this first one some more time as the spending is just starting to have impact.
HMI - MI

Yoiu people are incrediable. HCR is going to pass weather you like it or not. Insurance companies must be given competion in order to get their pricing in line. I't is actually the right thing to do for the economy. Think about what I've just said before you post a comment...really use your brain...
Speaking of the two minute video Pres Obama did for the Olympics...we're still waiting to see the video/photo-op his team did when flying Air Force One over New York and scaring the city to death when they thought the low flying airplane was another terrorist job.  Will the administration of "transparency" allow us to see this wonderful video which unnecessarily scared a city at taxpayer expense?
Where are the hardcore leftists posters supporting the second stimlus package?
The word that is getting lossed is Contingency. Whai is the meaning of CONTINGENCY? It certinally is we will no is it?
All this talk about the Obama administration breaking the bank is amusing. Let's take the combo stimulus plan that allotted $750 billion to the Bush crew to spread around in the fall and a slightly higher amount for Obama to use. The republicans threw the cash at the banks, insurance companies and other investment vehicles which was never accounted for and ended up as bonuses and higher compensation in the hands of those at fault for the mess to begin with.

Most of what Obama and crew had to invest is yet to be used. And invest is the key here. Can the banks fail? Of course, but if they pull out of their funk, they will be required to pay back the cash with interest, something they are already eager to do since limitations on the obscene amounts they pay themselves are in effect until they are free and clear again.

The same is true of the auto bailout. Will the big three succeed or fail? There is no guarantee of either, but if a leaner, more efficient auto maker results, the money will not have been foolishly spent, but wisely invested. Hopefully it will be totally free of Washington control and running on its own power again, but what of the alternative? Would it have been better, as the right seems to imply, that they be allowed to die and hope for a phoenix to rise out of the ashes? I prefer fact to fiction.

Socialism is and has always been a part of our system. The military, interstate infrastructure, education and an economic foundation, upon which financial products can be safely marketed are accepted aspects of our daily lives.

The two views of money flow, supply side and Keynesian each have their place and time. When wealth is needed to grow the economy, supply side, with its financial advantages for developing capital are in need. But the fact that at the present time 50% of the nation's wealth is held by one percent of the population show the model is far too top heavy already. The redistribution of wealth all the right wingers are so afraid of has already occurred and it is at the expense of what makes this country great, the chance to move up the economic ladder from poor, through middle class to wealthy.

The opposite calls for the Keynesian approach, where government intervention such as the New Deal is necessary. We are at this point now, and no matter how much the right hopes for its failure, we need to trust government or there will be no middle class left to provide the movement needed for capitalism to survive. One other element essential for capitalism is competition and the present trend of multinational corporations is suffocating FREE enterprise faster than pop goes the weasel.

Health care for all with it's attractive aspect of preventative care is also an investment in our economy. It may take several years, but this is an investment that will help small businesses compete with foreign companies and just by keeping people healthy, will increase productivity.

Finally, I wish his detractors would stop calling President Obama a fascist. Fascism represents the extreme right wing of the political spectrum. Communism is the far left extreme, by definition.

I'm shocked I didn't think you learned any thing from Bush and Cheney. And with your "so called expertise in the economy" you know the stimulus has failed. You need to listen to and watch something other than Fox and Limbaugh.
Michelle from Hillard. Yep, we are in a sad state. As one who lived in Ohio nearly all my 65 years, I can assure you that this situation is not the making of Barack Obama. Ask youself why Ohio began to lose population 25 years ago. Ask yourself why Ohio has had so many difficulties educating all its youth so that it has a population that would not attract the high tech jobs. Ask yourself why Ohio has allowd its infrastructure to rust away. Ask yourself how it is that a state with such fine universities is losing ground when it comes to sending its own youth to these universities. As yourself why Youngstown, Canton, Akron, Cleveland, Toledo are shadows of their former greatness and all shrinking in population. Sorry Michelle, this story began a very long time ago. Ohio's political divide within its borders has done all this nearly on its own. The changes in the industrial economy years ago has been met with state government mired so much in partisan grabs for power, government leaders who owe their win to religious promisses more than economic ideas. What can Ohio do? Well, it seems like its more and more conservative base will just sit back as usual and blame it on a lack of morals, a lack of leadership at the federal level, and more tears. Ohioans need to get educated, get motivated, select government based on excellence and not on the church they attend and begin to direct their own future instead of relying on the federal government to do it. Reagan did nothing for Ohio, Bush, Clinton, Bush did nothing for Ohio. When will Ohio learn to do it themselves.

He didn't really sound anti-Obama. The transcript from that interview is right here.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/31526815/

He really didn't sound very critical of the Obama administration to me. He said the stimulus was necessary and acknowledged that it would cause pain down the road. And he said we needed to do something about carbon emissions. What he was critical about was trying to move too fast on Cap and Trade.

So in an 11 minute plus interview, he was not in sync with the Obama administration on ONE question.

It doesn't sound like he thinks he made a mistake to me!

Pretty cool that George W. got that pistol.  That will be a fine display at the library.

I am a lifelong democrat but i do not agree with another stimulus at all!!!!!!

I'm with you on that! I don't think the Olympics would be good for Chicago and am hoping we DON'T get them. I don't want to see the hassles and I don't want to see the cost when they don't make money!
Michelle,  What did you wake up too?  Do you really believe that the past administration had no affect on the current conditions in Ohio?  Do you think the current administration is not trying to improve conditions?  Lets be more specific please.
-----------------------------------------------------
No, I don't think the current administration is trying to improve conditions.  I think they have their own vision of where they want to take things.  Talk of a second stimulus is evidence enough to make me wonder if he even has a clue.  And that poll was for Obama's job approval; it had nothing to do with the previous administration.
The word that is getting lossed is Contingency. Whai is the meaning of CONTINGENCY? It certinally is we will no is it?

Could someone please decipher Anita's post for me?  I speak English so I don't understand it.  Thank you.
To Jonathan Flint and Nashville Fan:  You guys rock the house.  I am loving the discourse and really wish both sides would emulate what you two are doing...this type of conversation is what will fi the country.  KEEP IT UP!!!
Tim Stocken, Highland Lakes, NJ - Finally, I wish his detractors would stop calling President Obama a fascist.

Just did a quick search in the board. You're the only one even talking about Obama and fascism.
I hope americans will revolt at the mention of a second stimulus.Ameicans are quickly catching on to the fact that the first stimulus hasn't stimulated anything except unions ( only 12% of the US work force) and government make work jobs. Oh yeah it is also being used to bail out states mostly democrat run that pumped up budgets (mostly to pay and give benefits to unions) Obama and his attending robots care nothing for the average Joe and the average joe is starting to realize this. The GM and Chrysler deals have come into focus now that the US has purchased the entire companies. It was pure payback to the foolish UAW workers and their goon bosses. The backlash against these companies is cratering sales of their products and it is likely they will go belly up. Obama is going to look might silly when he comes back looking for billions more to keep his UAW buddies in their jobs at our expense. When will this country wake up and see what this Chicago hack and his Chicago cronies are doing to us?
Pretty cool that George W. got that pistol.  That will be a fine display at the library.
Thanks, President Bush! (Sent Tuesday, July 07, 2009 10:54 AM)

And all for what?  over 4000 American troops dead, more than 100,000 disabled, thousands of civilian deaths, people tortured, over 600 billion dollars in costs, warrantless wiretapping, and let's not forget the ever changing reason why for the invasion!

All this comes down to a vendetta against someone who tried to kill the former dunce in chief's "daddy"!  And their zeal to get their hands on Iraqi Oil!

I am ashamed that the former dunce in chief and his administration was able to trick the country into one of the darkest events of this country!
whats funny is it took 8 years of Bush to get us in this mess and these idiotic conservatives have the audacity to talk about Obama's spending?

If this presidents stands by and lets major banks close, it will effect your mortgage, interest rates and your ability to use credit... your employers ability to use credit... which will in turn effect your employers ability to "pay you".

Conservatives have always had this "inability" to see outside the damn box... thats exactly why we're in this situation now and why many of you voted for a criminal and woman that just resigned as Governor of Alaska because she couldn't take the "heat" of politics.

thank god she didn't become VP...
