Obama approval high; confidence slips

President Obama continues to enjoy a high job approval rating and many personally like him, but there are signs that the public's confidence is slipping, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll out today.

On the president's job approval, 61% of respondents said they approve of Obama's job versus 37% who don't. That's about the same as in May.

Also, 79% say they personally like him. Neither George W. Bush (through his presidency) nor Bill Clinton (post presidency) enjoyed higher approval ratings dating back to 1999. (The released poll does not go back further.)

Seven in 10 (70%) say they think President Obama is a strong and decisive leader, but that's his lowest number in the poll since becoming president -- down 10 points since February. But it's still strong.

Almost six in 10 (56%) say Obama generally agrees with them on issues. That's down seven points since February and 12 since December.

Almost three quarters (72%) say he inspires confidence -- almost the same as in February. But only 53% now say he has a clear plan for solving the country's problems, down 11 points since February.

All around, his numbers have come down from what were sky-high levels -- on being tough enough to handle a crisis (64% -- down from 73%) and being able to manage the government effectively (61% -- down from 76% from December).

The poll on this thread is from CNN, formerly the Clinton News Network, so you get the drift.

The Gallup poll is considerably different overall.
Look it up. Obama is coming down to earth.
Every legitimate poll show's Obama's approval rating has fallen to the low to mid 50's.  Although respectable, much lower than when he was elected when it was in the mid 60's.  Why no mention of Rasmussen?  Based on likely voters he is at 51-48.  Approval index is at -8 meaning 8% more of respondents strongly disapprove than strongly approve.  You guys can live in your own world if you want but you may want to get back to reality.

Houston:

So now it's easier for Obama to bomb and bully in Afghanistan?

Obama passed wage discrimination legislation?  No, the unstoppable congressional majorities passed it and he signed it, an accomplishment equal to and as mundane as signing executive orders to reverse previous executive orders that had reversed executive orders.

He did set in motion a process to quadruple the deficit.  I will give him that as a concrete accomplishment.

And the Supreme Court ruled on a case, not legislation.

So does that mean you are willing to wait until the economy improves before passing Health Care Reform.

...I think decades is more than enough waiting....
The bottom line is that he's done nothing but put this country in monumental debt. He's a disaster.   But he does look good in his Armani suits.
President Obama is  trying to clean up huge  problems and errors left by his predecessors..  I don't think this poll is really  useful to the American people, it is  very premature.  We need to  be patient! He has been in office a little over five months and has already done a lot to attempt to correct things that were not of his making!  These polls would help us more in this country  if the were used in a more  constructive manner, rather than sending out unnecessary negativeity.
Vermont Girl:

It seemed really important for Obama to be "black" when it seemed imperative for our country to elect and African-American in order to prove something to the world.

Just go back and review the entire campaign, international comment and media coverage of the importance of the President's "blackness".

I agree with you that his color is irrelevant.  However, I saw the complete opposite in the promotion of his candidacy and election.

Don't overheat, babe.
Your insults were expected.

I gotta go get me a treat after that one.

Hey, I think we're getting closer.

Amen, Vermont Girl.  I was so incensed by that racist poster that I couldn't even reply--thanks for your comments.  I don't think comments like those belong on this site. I am grateful to President & Mrs. Obama for their hard work on behalf of all Americans.
Houston,
Obama is One and Done SAID
Other then spend a lot of money, complain about Bush, and fly around the world apologizing, just what has Obama done?

I WAS COMMENTING ON WHAT THIS NUT JOB SAID, I DID NOT WRITE THIS.
Well if bush had not spent all the money when we did have it, 1.2tiliion in tax cuts and 800 bullion on 2 wars then his job would have been easier from the start. remember bush started with a surplus and pissed it away.
what has the president done so far, he has put money back in the economey that the previous president did not want to do, he has put his health care plan on the table, he has with the help with the russians reduced nucular weponds by 20% signed exective orders reguarding stem cell recearch, and as you said went around the world apologizing to other world leaders for starting a war based upon lies, to get out credibality back, in 5 months that more than the previous president did in 8 years except pissing the surplus away.

Jeff, just read your previous post.
How are you allowed to vote (and influence the events)when you cannot write in English? Or you are still in 4th grade?
My favorite is :"nucular weponds by 20% signed exective orders reguarding stem cell recearch..."
Obama is himself a sad carbon imprint, and a pathetic addition to mankind.
Houston - It must be lonely for you down there. Just a shout to let you know we hear you and you have our support. If you ever get up this way, give me a call and we can take in a Yankees game...
Translation. The guy is doing his best but the mountain is a very steep climb. I hope he makes it. I don't know how and he likely doesn't either. Yet, his sheer effort and capacity keeps me positive.
Go America. Go Obama. And the chant for all of us is "yes we can." These are tough times earned by 8 years of mismanagement. The amount that has been done in 5 months is leaps and bounds ahead of the last several administrations. We have a government working. If only we could all find that much work.
