Pelosi: No Jackson resolution

From NBC's Mike Viqueira

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says that the framed legislative resolution brandished at the Michael Jackson memorial by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee will not be taken up by the House.

House Resolution 600 -- "Honoring an American legend and musical icon" -- praises the life and work of Mr. Jackson and is sponsored by Ms. Jackson Lee. The measure has exactly one co-sponsor, Rep. Dianne Watson (D-LA.)

While Pelosi

says that she encourages members to use to the floor of the House to express sympathy or praise for various individuals that they deem worthy of special notice, she doesn't think it's necessary to have the Jackson resolution on the floor.

"If the idea is to praise the life and work ... then why not do that [in some other way]?" Pelosi said. "A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with the resolution, whose purpose is quite different."

This is not a surprise for folks around these parts, but just so you know.

PELOSI: NO JACKSON RESOLUTION

Why not?! It's probably the only thing the House will get done this year.
Well pigs must be flying...I kind of agree with Pelosi on something.

Although I would have just said it's a waste of time, and moved on.  I mean I really like Bill Murray, but on the sad and inevitable day that he passes away I won't be looking to congress to tell me how awesome his movies were...If I was in Shelia Jackson Lee's district I would be writing her to tell her to stop wasting her time on stupid meaningless tasks.
I have a feeling that Michael Jackson doesn't really care one way or the other.

Sad that EVERY DEVLISH THING has to be politicized to the point of nausea in this country.
Isn't that just like Pelosi? She gets our votes each and every election, and now there's a chance for a little payback, and she walks away from it! Gonna have to rethink this Democrat voting thing a little bit!
I wish they would plant the guy already and then maybe we can all MOVE ON!

I'm suffering from some serious Jackson fatigue!

Theys should put up a statue of Jackson, right nexts to Obamas.
Wow, the Obama haters are out in full force.

Feisty Redhead from IL (I'm a feisty redhead from Indiana); you are exactly right!!!  Have you noticed how the haters have completely forgotten who got us into this mess and who continues to thwart any effort to fix things?  I'll give you a hint--"G" (either for GOP or George W.)

Isn't that cute? Feisty has a new alias. Hi Feisty, ehh, I mean Sueb. <chuckle>
Bravo for Nancy Pelosi to keep her focus on what's important legislation for our country.  It's not the job of Congress to waste time honoring people, let the media do the honors stuff which they seem only too happy to do.  Besides Congress has far more important fish to fry getting health care reform, the energy bill and other important pieces of legislation passed.

In Nancy Pelosi We Trust!

Stick around… things are just starting to get GOOD! ;0)

Hey, the comic and the racist meet.

The female Latino vs. the white guy.

Spoken like a true right wing exremist. Is'nt there another domestic terrorist you should be cheering on somewhere?
What right does a white male extremist have to say that another person is racist? You cheer on murder of abortion doctors and spew hateful retoric at the leader of our country without an ounce of understanding of basic civics. I have never once read a substantive post from you. All you do is make failed attempts at sarcasm that do not even come close to masking your hateful and ignorant nature.
If Sotomayor is a racist and Franken is nothing but a comedian, what does that make you?
Good for you Nancy.   You didn't get to be Speaker by taking the easy road. I'm sure you'll get some flack, real or feigned.  There is a spine of steel in that woman.  You go girl!!
I do appreciate respect sentiments and so should others. RIP

Leave it to First Read to cite the CNN poll, with no mention of the Rasmussen poll, the Quinnipiac poll of Ohio, the PPP poll of Virginia, or the Gallup poll.  Those numbers tell a different story

Excuse me,Pollster
Pollsters like you, Rasmussen poll and the skew-master Frank Luntz. Understandably, many people don't understand the sick news they constantly being
inundated by Right Wind Nuts eager to gaincontrol of the same old thing again.

RIGHT WING DING DONGS forgetebouit; just as the  President brushed those flakes off  his shoulders during vicious attacks in the campaign; soon the opinions perpetuated constantly be you nuts will be dismissed too. Hello!

RIGHT WING DING DONGS your instant gratification will soon go away. Are you enjoying your instant gratification nuts.
Nothing against MJ, but congress & politics & rock & roll pop music- do not belong in the same sentence.
Although, the gesture by Rep. Jackson - Lee is well noted and greatly appreciated.

I do however agree with Speaker Pelosi.

But, I do hope they put his picture get on a stamp - like they did Elvis.

I am a fan of both and they both were uniquely gifted and loved by the entire world.

One was far more a superior talent though – keeping that thought to my self :)

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Michael Jackson exported American culture to every corner of the world.  Only Mickey Mouse, Superman, and Cola-Cola are more recognizable as American products.  And our gov still don't want to give the man his props?  Shameful.
What, no resolution for Michael Jackson, who is dead.

Finally, something Pelosi has said that I can agree with. Whew. Long time coming.

In 5 years the postal service will have a stamp out in his honor, if ya'll can wait that long. It's the rule.

Soooooo, you vote Democrat in hopes that in the future when a Black Athlete or Entertainer/Celebrity passes, the party will pass something honoring them in Congress?
Steven McNair just recently passed...would you mind researching and finding your post in support of some legislative acknowledgement.  A 13 year career in the pros, Husband, Father of 4, countless charities...surely you must be outraged at the Congressional silence of his impact in the community for which he's lived for so long.

I'm Black, proud and not in agreement with the reason you vote.
I suppose Al Sharpton will now come out and denounce Pelosi.  Right?

That's my girl, Nancy!

Get on with the business of ALL the American people....not the business of Jackson-Lee, who goes to funerals of lots of folks, that she doesn't even know.  Get a life Jackson-Lee, and stop grandstanding!

ENOUGH of MJ!
Jonathan Flint, MI (Sent Thursday, July 09, 2009 1:46 PM)

You are correct; pigs must be flying somewhere because I actually agree with YOU on something!

By the way, the people in her district were well represented at the funeral (thus her appearance there, I am sure!) - ha
Good for Nancy! A congressional resolution about Michael Jackson is the last thing we need right how at there are lots of more important things to consider. I fail to understand the attention and adulation given to the musician of questionable quality.
Perry the republican drone decides to change the subject of serving and W's AWOL to liberals. Funny I am a liberal, served in the Marines honorably, and care about our troops. Most military people are liberals and realize war is not the answer. Perry decides not to dispute the fact that no one in the RNC leadership has served our country. Perry is to busy making a strawman in his response to dispute facts.  By your response Perry, to put honorable in your name tag raises the question if you ever served. People who are patriots do not yell they are patriots and do not have tell people they are patriots, actions speak for themselves.
Speaker Pelosi, Pelosi, Pelosi...
What is wrong with you? Why not House Resolution 600 -- "Honoring an American legend and musical icon"?
Your idea of democracy is driving me away from the democratic party.
Allow something positive to go forward in the House...
Gonna have to rethink this Democrat voting thing a little bit!
Black and Proud (Sent Thursday, July 09, 2009 1:47 PM)

Really?!?  Over whether or not a Michael Jackson resolution is passed?!?  Oh good grief, I sure hope that was a snark.
Nancy Pelosi needs to be removed from office.
She is on a dangerous power trip.

Well, she didn't get my vote and never will because I don't live in CA. But I do agree with her. I think the Resolution was introduced for purely political reasons. They have alot of other stuff to worry about.

I hope you don't really consider passage of this Resolution as payback for your vote for Pelosi. If MJ had not died, what would the payback have been?

And, if you would actually reconsider the way you vote, let me ask: have you been paying attention to the way Republicans treat minorities? Any minority?
