Las vegas is hurting and the stimulus money is not here. We are still losing jobs at a large pace. Obama needs to get back here to deal with this. Is he a lame duck already?

Now that's an interesting concept, showers at work so people can bike to work rather than ride the bus or cars.  I hope that portable showers are far better than portable potties.

Hey DG - time for you to open your mind that this economic collapse all started with Ronny Raygunz's VooDoo Tinkle Down Economics that have left the vast majority of us all wet from the wrong kind of golden shower.  The richest and greediest get that way by being money addicts who never have enough and always want more, they're just money junkies and it's time to give them the cold turkey treatment.  Rich people do not create jobs, Demand creates jobs and it's the rich and greedy who have all the money to take advantage of when Demand demands more goodies so more jobs get created.  Wake up and stop screwing yourself so the rich and greedy can make you pay higher taxes so they don't have to.

Get it shovel ready and apply for stimulus money.  Then in a couple of years appropriate more to take care of the cost overruns and the alternative shower arrangements that are necessary because it isn't completed yet.

By the time they are done, their transit subsidies will be a drop in the leaky bucket of public funds.

If you're going to install commuter showers in a government building. You'll need to install the special Larry Craig proof partitions. As a bike commuter, I don't want some GOP hypocrite reaching under. Ooooh.

As someone who bicycles to work whenever possible, I wish my employer offered something like this.  There's nothing worse than showing up in a sweaty suit.

demand can only create jobs if there are people with the means to purchase the goods and services.

Why is the demand for yachts so low?  Don't you think most boaters would love to own one?

Why is the demand for luxury vehicles so low?  I don't mean Cadillacs, but Lamborghinnis.  Don't you think most drivers would love to own one?

As people what they want, with no restrictions, and you'd see a sharp increase in demand for both of those items.  You know, 'if you could have any car in the world, what would it be'?

It is the cost that drives down the demand for these things.  And, the fact that fewer people are working is driving down the rate of demand for many things right now.  It isn't that people don't want things, it is that they cannot afford them.

Also, wealthier people do things that create jobs.  They have decks built on their homes.  They buy new cars every three years.  They hire people to cut their lawns, take care of their pools, clean their houses, and, what's more important, they do these things with THEIR OWN MONEY.

Not with other people's money, but their own.  They earn it, they spend it.  The government does not do things that way.  They take money from one group of people and give it to another.  This, my friends, does not help the economy.

Which is why the stimulus is such  and epic failure.

Hillary Clinton must think at night 'How in the world did I not beat out this loser?'. Look for Hil to resign SecofState soon, because for one thing, she doesn't go anywhere! She's just shuffled off to the side as Obama stumbles around the world apologizing.

The woman continued, asking Clinton, "[Would] you would support an initiate to get us access to showers? First of all, it would save the government a lot of money, because we wouldn't have to get our transit subsidies. I'd much rather bike to work than take the Metro. It would be green and it would promote morale."

Clinton was enthusiastic. "I love that idea," she said.

Great idea.  Once they've cleaned up the State Department, they can move over to the CIA.  Maybe they should have the CIA's trusted partner Halliburton build the showers.  It worked out so well in Iraq.

Talk about a curve ball question.  What can it hurt to check into adding showers.  It is a good idea.  Beyond the shower question, it is interesting that Secretary Clinton is having town halls for her department.  What better way than that to discuss issues as well as listen to ideas from staff.  I don't recall any other SOS having sessions like this.

Excellent and well thought out post.  I'm in total agreement.  Righties here accuse the President of spending money that the government doesn't have.  The real problem with the economy is that as individuals WE'VE been spending money we don't have for decades.  We've become a consumer driven economy where the only way we can keep ourselves afloat is to continue to spend ourselves into bankruptcy.  Stimulus money is all well and good, but it must be a part of an overall plan that includes shifting our economy from consumer-based to manufacturing-based.  Sadly, we've been shipping all of our manufacturing jobs overseas faster than we've been creating them (both parties).  This has been what has come back to bite us in the wallet.  With the current recession, attitudes toward reckless spending are changing and people are now saving more.  While this benefits the individual, it does nothing for the economy in general.  The bad news (or good news, depending on how you look at it) is that this is likely a permanent trend (IMO).  Unless we begin manufacturing goods again, and trading them with other countries, we'll never get our economy back to full strength.  I have to agree with conservatives on this one (THINKING conservatives, not the neo-con nut jobs).  Stimulus packages alone are merely a band-aid to a much bigger problem.  We need to start creating sustainable jobs, which means we need to begin manufacturing and selling goods.  At the risk of sounding like Joe [not] the Plumber, it's time to start making "Made in America" mean something again.

Go ahead and get the showers but if radical liberals are involved it will also mean "co-ed" showers.  After all, according to liberals, there is no difference between men and women.  And since they support any and every lifestyle, that means it would be discrimination to have "men's" and "women's" showers.  It also might make bi-sexuals and transgendered folks upset, and we can't do that.  So, go ahead and add the showers but be careful who you meet there....After all, in the lastest radical liberal "hate crimes bill" it's only straight people and religious people who must fear hate crime allegations.  All the perverts are protected....

That's fine. So why does Obama continue to put more taxes and more regulation on the industries in the US? And this isn't just Obama, but this has been going on for 50 years. The government looks to industry and corporations as revenue sources, and in the process has killed most of those sources off.

Thanks for the response. There are some on other posts that turn a non political answer into partisan hackery.

People that know me around here know I'm a liberal. But, as I've said before, we seem to paint with mighty broad brushes when sniping each other on this board. I will stand behind a solution I beleive in whether there is an "R" or a "D" behind the sponsor's name. I will oppose solutions on the same basis. I don't care WHO comes up with the plan, I'm going to back the plan I beleive in.

So, continuing the discussion; How do American Manufacturer's compete with overseas companies who pay pennies on the dollar, without becoming isolationists? In my opinion (after re-reading your post it seems it's your opinion too)  we have to make the "Made in America" label the epitome of quility products. So much, in fact, that other countries once again covet the goods that bear the label. American's too need to start looking for the label again.

I don't want to cut ourselves off from the world. but, I do want the things we are able to make, and are willing to buy made here.
