Obama’s health care proposal is, in effect, the repeal of the Medicare program as we know it. The elderly will go from being the group with the most access to free medical care to the one with the least access. Indeed, the principal impact of the Obama health care program will be to reduce sharply the medical services the elderly can use. No longer will their every medical need be met, their every medication prescribed, their every need to improve their quality of life answered.


It is so ironic that the elderly - who were so vigilant when Bush proposed to change Social Security - are so relaxed about the Obama health care proposals. Bush’s Social Security plan, which did not cut their benefits at all, aroused the strongest opposition among the elderly. But Obama’s plan, which will totally gut Medicare and replace it with government-managed care and rationing, has elicited little more than a yawn from most senior citizens.

It’s time for the elderly to wake up before it is too late!

In our new book, Catastrophe, we explain - in detail and in depth - the consequences the elderly of Canada are feeling from just this kind of program. Limited colonoscopies have led to a 25% higher rate of colon cancer and a ban on the use of the two best chemotherapies are part of the reason why 42% of Canadians with colon cancer die while 31% of Americans, who have access to these two medications, survive the disease.

Overall, the death rate from cancer in Canada is 16% higher than in the United States and the heart disease mortality rate is 6% above ours’.

Under Obama’s program, there will be a government health insurance company that gets huge subsidies of tax money. It will compete with private insurance plans. But the subsidies will let it undercut the private plans and drive them out of business, leaving only the government plan - a single payer - in effect.

Today, 800,000 doctors struggle to treat adequately the 250 million Americans who have insurance. Obama will add 50 million more to their caseload with no expansion in the number of doctors or nurses. Indeed, his plan will likely reduce their number by lowering reimbursement rates and imposing bureaucrats above them who will force medical decisions down their throats. Fewer doctors will have to treat more patients. The inevitable result will be rationing.

And it is the elderly who rationing will most effect. Who should get a knee replacement a 40 year old or a 70 year old? Who should get a new hip, a young person or an old person? Who should have priority in the operating room a seventy year old diabetic who needs bypass surgery or a younger person? Obviously, it is the elderly who will get short shrift under his proposal.

But the interest groups that usually speak up for the elderly, particularly AARP, are in Obama’s pocket, hoping to profit from his program by becoming one of its vendors. Just as they backed Bush’s prescription drug plan because they anticipating profiting from it, so they are now helping Obama gut the medical care of their constituents.

It is high time that the elderly of America realized what the stakes are in this vital fight to preserve Medicare as we know it and keep medical care open, accessible, and free to those over 65. It is truly a battle for their very lives.

As for Surgeon General, I will need more information about her to make any real comment. So far, however she looks like a good choice. That could be confirmed or changed based on what I learn of her later on.

I am not sure Healthcare, although I know a whole family in S.W. FL -- AGES 29, 26, 2, and 7 weeks respectively without Healthcare  - is going to get out this Summer.   Back to the West Coast of FL, only the husband works and because he makes $16.00 an hour in a 30 to 40 hour workweek, they qualify for nothing.   I find that stunning in a country this wealthy.

I'm am not in favor of a plan that mandates everyone just buy insurance.  That is not reform, that just spreads out the cost.

We need a non-profit option that does not choose if a person lives or dies based on share price.  Just making everyone buy insurance will not help that we pay more than any industrialized country in the world per person, while getting less and less.

Having everyone buy insurance will do nothing but pad the insurance companies bottom line, and keep prescription drug prices high.

We need single payer, or we need a public option to keep competition and honesty in the health insurance industry.  

Obama can keep cheerleading on this issue, but even the democrats aren't listening anymore. the reason he wanted it done yesterday, without anyone reading the bill, (like everything else he pushes through on an emergency basis) is that he knows that when these people go back to their districts, they get plenty of grief from their constituents on their votes.  these are the same people who hire and fire them with their votes; their choices are to listen to the president, or listen to their 'employers'.

Obama may not care what the polls say, as he believes that he is right on every issue, despite the consequences, but the members his party sure do.  In this economy, they do not want to join the ranks of the unemployed.

Just wondering Opie. Who is paying for your healthcare? How about your parents? How about your grandparents? Sister? Brother? Wife? Kids?

We are all confident that it is not you. Oh, you may pay a little co insurance but that is it isn't dopey?

All the propaganda these posters push thru on a daily basis - how do you look in the mirror and not feel ashamed?  We need a public option to our health care menu, we need to stop a bunch of overly rich bureaucrats from convincing the uneducated that somehow the public option will cost them more (like insurance is free now??), and not let them go to the doctor they want - sounds like the insurance policy I have currently.  My husband and I pay about $12000 a year for basic health insurance plans; they still fight us on a chiropractor visit.  Are the naysayers telling me it will cost even more than that to get a public plan?  I have to doubt it.  They act like all Americans will go from paying $0 under the insurance company plan to paying $600 billion under the government plan.  And why would anyone trust anything that sleezeball Dick Morris says?  We need a public option and we will fight to get it no matter how much money the insurance and phara lobbies waste trying to convince us otherwise.  Now is the time for the middle/lower classes to get some fairness.

We've been hoodwinked about health care reform for decades. The only difference between our health care system and the systems in Canada, England and France is that no one, not one person, dies or goes bankrupt in those countries because they get sick and can't pay for treatment. Thousands of middle class Americans that HAVE health insurance die or go bankrupt every single day because they can't pay the deductibles. We wait the same amount of time as they do and the beaurac, er insurance company, is the one making the decision as to what care we receive. The doctor makes the decision in those countires.

Finally, someone from the insurance companies is speaking out about how we have been fooled for so long and the insurance industry efforts to scare us....wake up!

For all the advocates of the Public option...where do you find the legal authority (as derived from the role of legislators and the executive as defined in the constitution) to procede with a large public program like this?  For those who say health care is a right (what you mean, however is entitlement) that should be accomodated by the government for the public where is this in our founding documents?  For all the harping over the consitutional criminallity of the Bush Admin. (and I agree with most of it, mind you) why are you not screaming about the unconstituional nature of the federal health option or even cap and trade for that matter?

You absolutlely cannot only belive in the authority of the Constitution when it suits your purposes only.  This is why I don't respect most of the arguments made on this board by the partisan junkies that like to spout their one liners and party rhetoric.  The two party system has created walking contradictions out of U.S. citizens.

Health care needs reform.  That is certain.  The problem is that this "fix" isn't what we need. In an already weak economy this will add to our problems. If the administration is really serious about improving healthcare and reducing cost, then enact real torte reform.  It will reduce doctor's fees, prescription drug costs, hospital fees and every facet of healthcare without increasing taxes for anyone. Right now we have doctors who are getting out of medicine because they cant afford torte insurance. That alone should tell objective people how bad it is. It will also be a cost savings to every business thus helping all areas of our economy. Bring us in line with the EU who doesn't treat torte as a form of lottery. If nothing else it would rid us of all the ridiculous lawyer ads in the media. I dont hold any hope for this because our president is a lawyer as many on both sides of the aisle in Congress.  When they decide to take us torte reform, only then will I believe they have dropped politics and done what is best for the nation.  

But reform in what manner? Moderates are currently hijacking the entire debate.

All of these writers who are "putting down" a Public Option, I'd like to see what they will do when all of the 40 million Americans who do not have healthcare gets it.  I'd like to see how they feel when their private care insurance (that they can keep if they want)premimus keep going up (and their wages do not) and if they have a catastrophic illness & need an operation and the Industry says they will not cover it, or when their prescription drugs keep going up, how they will feel.  It is truly amzing how some Americans vote against their best interests and let these health care industries walk all over them!  They are laughing all the way to the bank!  Just last week there was an article about how much the industry overcharged their subscribers.  So you narrow-minded people keep what you got and keep on paying through the nose!  (By the way I have government health care with an Insurance company and do not qualify for the Public OPTION), but I feel EVERY American should have health care as a right like most countries in the western world do.  We have the most expensive health care and are way down on the list of countries for being the healthiest!
