Kennedy-Dodd cmte passes health bill

From NBC's Mark Murray
Breaking News: "The Senate health committee has passed legislation to revamp health care, becoming the first congressional committee to act on President Barack Obama's goal of overhauling the U.S. medical system this year," the AP writes.

"The Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 13-10 to pass a $600-billion measure that would expand coverage to nearly all Americans by requiring individuals to get insurance and employers to contribute to the cost. The bill would provide federal aid to families and individuals making less than four times the U.S. poverty level, or about $88,000 for a family of four."

Video: The Senate health committee passes a bill aimed at revamping health care. It's the first congressional committee to act on President Obama's goal of overhauling the system this year.

Senate Republicans are currently holding a press conference saying it was "regrettable" they weren't at the table to help draft the legislation.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Ken Strickland has more: "This bill must now be merged with the Senate Finance Committee bill before it goes to the floor. But the Finance Committee hasn't even introduced its bill yet. Of the five committees in Congress writing health-care bills, only the Senate HELP committee has moved its version of the bill out of committee."

"Yesterday, the three House committees writing health-care reform introduced their bills together as one big bill. The next step in the House is for each committee to separately pass their own versions out of committee, merge them into one bill, and then have a vote on the floor. Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate believe -- or at least hope -- to have each chamber pass their bills before the August recess. However, some Democrats involved privately admit it will be a challenge to reach that goal."

Right, Obie?

Does everybody really know what's REALLY happening here?

Well we know the socialsts on government and employer sponsored healthcare will start whining about how those who want affordable healthcare are just a bunch of democrats and why should they pay for someone elses insurance.
I really do find this offensive. I am not paid by the GOP. We all all our preferences to posting and definitions of "common sense" postings. Do not let your mouth speak, before your mind has a chance to think.

Hey Anita,  I think what Rick,KY meant was ALL the NEW Right Wing Whack Job posters lurking around here these days… we’ve all noticed the increase in the rabid rhetoric from the right lately!

At least I hope that’s what he meant… Rick if you have a chance can you ‘weigh in’ and clarify?  And enjoy your time with your grandson!  My daughter is home for the summer and I’m so having a good time!

But hey like Eric says:  If not for you conservatives the website wouldn't get as many clicks and not as much ad revenue so keep supporting our Liberal website with your conservative clicks –

We’re beating than at their OWN GAME once again!

Plus it’s a great workout keeping the fear & smear machine on their toes!  I know I’m LOVING it!  Throw a FACT or some TRUTH out there and the whack jobs howl like a vampire that just got hosed in holy water!

Just my two cents…
Wow, things are moving fast.  Republicans complaining they weren't at the table?  Well, were they out hiking the Appalachian Trail.  They are members of the committe so if they were not at the table, it is their own fault.  By at the table they probably mean, they weren't at the head of the table.

Have to get busy outside.  Keep the right on their toes because they're sure to be in hunkered down, dig in their feet mode.
This is wonderful.

Our thanks to all those who work hard for the betterment for us Americans by being empathetic, caring and all inclusive.

4x's? If you didn't know what socailism was before, you do now. This is nothing short of socialism. And atack on prosperity. An attack on people that hard work. An attack on success.

According to the liberals, if you cannot be successful on your own, they will provide for you on the backs of the people that do work hard and are successful. That is socialism.
Also so far I've only gotten one response (that I've noticed anyway) to my challenge to explain to me how The Public Health Option, Cap and Trade, Stimulus Packages (Bush's or Obama's) are constitutional.  I think they are illegal.  - Flint
-------------------------------------------------------

Can't speak for #1 and #3, but I've analyzed the full Act (yes, all 1201 pages) and it violates several different aspects of international law - as Obama himself admits.  It'd be quite possible to rewrite the legislation in a manner that is both legal AND more effective but, sadly, the Democrats seem intent on writing legislation that is more expensive and less effective than is necessary.

Let's not forget Section 763 of the Act, which provides for more polluting companies to receive more rebates than their less polluting domestic competitors.  How do you like those incentives?

Meanwhile, Obama's cheerleading squad of Feisty, Eric, and Sierra continue spouting the same tired party slogans while ignoring the difficult questions, such as how they can reconcile the Act's violation of international law with their criticisms of Bush for doing the same.
I just don't like the idea of being "forced" to buy anything.  If I don't succumb, then I will be fined $1000.  WTF??  I thought this was the land of the free.  We've lost too many of our freedoms already.
Who were the little ditto heads who siad Health Care was DOA ???

You forgot to tell Nancy Pelosi, Harry Waxman, Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd !!

Bi-Partisan SUCKS !!
Republicans only want to delay and kill Health Care

And it starts! Get it to the floor for a vote. Senate republicans are saying it is regrettable they weren’t at the table to help draft the legislation? For what? To stall? They have no plan that viable all they wanted to do was stall anyway.

To Sue in Seattle:

Actually, Sue, it was a cross combination of many and I am glad that you did. Documented facts seem to be all that you people understand.

One other point you for got that wasn't posted as well...Jimmy Carter left office with the "economy" in shambles, Ronald Reagan created 16.1 million jobs but in doing so he sold out the steel industry to do it...

President Obama is the clean up man and he will reclaim this economy to sustainable growth. Sue it’s about ownership and documentation, no spin. What I would like to see is you back out here when the economy improves…and Sue, it will.

Excuse the typos; I have several people calling both cells and land lines today and receiving e-mail alerts like crazy!

So lets get this straight. Businesses defined to be Small Businesses employ about 60% of the people in the US. These businesses have been struggling to stay afloat during the recession. They do so by controlling costs, which in many cases is done by laying people off. So now the Democrats, Dodd, Kennedy, and others, want to load the small businesses up with even more obligations to the government? So what does Dodd and Kennedy think (if they think at all) is going to happen when you increase small businesses expenses without increasing their income? That's right, more layoffs, and that's the best case. Worst case, they just go out of business. At least the people they fire will have free health care.
"The Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 13-10 to pass a $600-billion measure that would expand coverage to nearly all Americans by requiring individuals to get insurance and employers to contribute to the cost. Now THIS is change that I can believe in!

Why won't the media trumpet the $600 Billion number the same way they trumpet the $1 Trillion number?

Not as sensational, eh?

lol

"Senate Republicans are currently holding a press conference saying it was "regrettable" they weren't at the table to help draft the legislation."

I agree . . . it is regrettable that the Republican members of Congress have steadfastly refused to work with the President in anyway to help the American people . . . and now they are left to continue complaining about their "hurt feelings" instead of all the hurt being felt by the American people in this economy.

It's just shameful . . .

P.S. So does the braintrust that is the media still think the President is "doing too much"? Sounds like the Republicans are afraid that the American people will notice that they are doing "absolutely nothing".

The Health Care Reform bill is passing through committee's and soon it will go for votes in both bodies of Congress.  All the impotent rage the repugnant ones show is so fun to watch as they can't stop the health care reform with the public option.

"Also so far I've only gotten one response (that I've noticed anyway) to my challenge to explain to me how The Public Health Option, Cap and Trade, Stimulus Packages (Bush's or Obama's) are constitutional.  I think they are illegal.
C'mon liberals come and get it and prove me wrong."
Jonathan, Flint, MI

Hey Jonathan - Obviously you have'nt thought out the old saying be careful what you wish for.  I've seen several other great rebuttals of your constitutional whining but figure why not pile on.  As always you whine about if things being constitutional yet you seem to know nothing about our contitution nor that it gives Congress the ability to make laws.  Just because our forefather's couldn't look 200+ years into the future doesn't mean that if they didn't put something into our constitution then it isn't constitutional.  They said that all men are created equal yet didn't overturn slavery.  We Liberals didn't like the laws your bushwhacker got passed like that idiotic UnPatriot Act that stole our liberties but we didn't whine about it being unconstitutional.  Next time before you whine about something try researching the matter first, you'll sound a lot less foolish that way.

Pass Health Care Reform with the Public Option!
***YES WE DID***

This is how things actually get DONE when you put a LEADER in charge instead of the puppet we had the last 8 miserable years!

Ain't no stoppin us NOW!

And to the uptight righties... it's gotta be 'noon' somewhere... you can start crying in your WHINE early today if you like!
Quote - "Senate Republicans are currently holding a press conference saying it was "regrettable" they weren't at the table to help draft the legislation."

Are you kidding me? Even if you're a cave man, all you have to do is watch C-Span to realize that any Republican with a comment or idea on health care reform has been given ample opportunity to make his/her opinions and suggestions known.

If G-No-P members opted to stay out of the official dialog on health care, whose fault is that?

I must confess that I came into the new calendar year with an open mind toward some Republican members of Congress, but upon further review, must conclude that, almost to a person, they are a vile, petty group of politicians who will say or do anything to feather their own personal nests.

People are sick. People are out of work. People have lost their homes or their savings. There's work to be done, and the train is leaving the station. Republicans can either hop aboard and become part of the solution or they can be left behind to whine about "not being at the table."
The Repukes weren't there because they did not want to be there period!  All they have done so far is complain and be the party of NO!  They don't want to work with anyone other than themselves, they only want their policies and no one elses.  They have offered no new ideas only stuff that has been tried before and failed.  They don't want to take care of the citizens of this country, they only want to protect their own fortunes.  They don't care that many manufacturing jobs were lost due to corporations moving overseas.  They could have changed NAFTA when they had their chance but blew it.  They care about PARTY FIRST country second!  They are the Anti to Amercian!!!!!
I wonder what kind of federal assistance those making $88,000 can expect?  Seems a bit high to me, but obviously, I haven't seen or read the details.  Of course, that probably qualifies me for Congress at this point.
Feisty, I hope so, because it wasn’t posted as such. I think that all of us contribute to whacking the rightists, so well that they steal handles…anyway….I have a very busy office today and I’ll try to keep fighting when I can! You guys keep up the good work if I have to leave.

I guess the breaking news started a swarm this morning in my office! lol
"The AP's lead: "With four simple words -- 'Give it to me!'

This another rushed bill by the sol alinsky adherant in the white House.  There is a reason his poll numbers keep tanking-he doesn't get over 50% on ANY  of his initiatives, and
Fiesty redhead-THAT is why you are seeing so many posters who are against Obama.

People now realize that 'change' does not necessarily mean improvement.
To Sue in Seattle:

One more thing Sue...George H.W. Bush negotiated NAFTA...just thought I'd put that out here since you right wingers insist on it being totally Clinton's fault. I didn't agree with everything Clinton did as President either and I have my dislikes about some of his policies as well...although...we were in debt with Japan at the time...
The naysayers will continue to spew the talking points. Many currently with insurance but not sick do not realize how slippy the current slope it.

Good work Senators. Moving right along.

Robert,

Your logic is missing one essential piece - the money that businesses will SAVE on health care costs - the same costs that increase at a rate several times the cost of living annually now - the same costs that keep many businesses from competing globally.

If the tax goes up and the health care costs go down, then there is a better than average chance that the effect will be either revenue neutral or a revenue benefit, meaning that is GOOD for business.
Meanwhile, Obama's cheerleading squad of Feisty, Eric, and Sierra continue spouting the same tired party slogans while ignoring the difficult questions, such as how they can reconcile the Act's violation of international law with their criticisms of Bush for doing the same.

Yes, either you, or your (nudge nudge wink wink) "impostor" have vomited again.
This post is not associated with this topic, but I did not want it to get lost in the mix.  My intention is for Pat of Boston to see the post.  I'm sure you have many Believing friends in your life, but I wanted you to know that are Believers in this country who don't follow lock and step with the nutties on the religious right.  I'm a firm believer that the Lord gave me dominion over my own mind and thus the full accountability to deal with what I do with that mind.  Here was a question I presented to a different poster earlier today:

"One of the dilemnas for black voters is that Dems take their votes for granted and force many black voters (who are church going and socially conservative) to have to throw their conscience to the wind when it comes to defining marriage and abortion.  Remember Prop 8 in California where black voters overwhelminly voted for Obama but also supported Prop 8 defining marriage as one man and one woman?????  And when it comes to abortion, more and more black voters are becoming aware that abortion is fundamentally racist.  Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, was a racist eugenicist who wanted to "control" those she deemed "unfit" which included blacks.  Today, 35% of all aborted babies are black and yet blacks only represent 15% of the total population.  And abortion clinics target urban areas (heavy black population) to drive their lucrative business.  Here's hoping the black vote will begin to raise its voice against the immoral leftist world view that supports the destruction of life and attempts to re-define marriage." -- Social Issues
------------------------------
Not that there are not many points that can be discussed in your post, but one that I would like to speak to is the {traditional} definition of marriage.

As a matter of disclosure, I am a Believer in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, but I am also a believer in the Constitution and other documents that define the law of the land for the United States of America and I don't believe that the US is a Christian State.

Often times Biblical references are given to support the relationship between a Man and Woman.  On it's face, I have no issue that.  But in the course of conversation, you often hear comments that 'marriage is owned and defined by God' etc. and it is along this line of talk that I would ask the church one question:

If marriage is owned/defined by God as being between 1 man and 1 woman, explain to me the situation where a 1 man, 1 woman relationship that IS recognized by the church, but is NOT recognized by the State?

When I hear all this talk about God owning marriage, I guess I have to question that at some level. Not with standing poligamy, I could come up with no scenario where the church recognized a relationship between 1 man and 1 woman that the State did not.

So, my question stated a little differently, if legal recognition of the State is required in order for a relationship between 1 man and 1 woman to be recognized as a 'marriage', what entity has the real control over the institution, the State or the church?

My answer would be the State and so when looked at at the civil liberties level, I see no fundamental arguement against allowing gay and lesbian couples from being allowed to get married and enjoy the lawful benefits associated with that contract, because that contract is legalized and ratified by the State.

Also, for my Believing brethren, I would offer this language/concept to think through:

A 'covenant' is a relationship recognized and honored by God, where 'marriage' is a relationship recognized and honored by the State.

How do we help pay for health Care ??

Here's HOW.... END PORK BARRELL !!!

'...the Lockheed Martin F-22, has recently required more than 30 hours of maintenance for every hour in the skies, pushing its hourly cost of flying to more than $44,000, a far higher figure than for the warplane it replaces,..'

Whoc Cares if it works, it's for the Military !!!

From Washington Monthly:

'...Cancel The F-22

Yesterday, Barack Obama repeated his threat to veto the defense authorization bill if it contains money to buy more F-22 fighter jets. He's absolutely right. I hope he prevails over the various Senators who are trying to put the money back in. For one thing, it's not clear that our biggest need right now is for an even niftier fighter plane, as opposed to something that might come in handy in, say, Afghanistan. For another, the F-22 has a lot of problems. This Washington Post article is worth reading in its entirety. A few bits:

"The United States' top fighter jet, the Lockheed Martin F-22, has recently required more than 30 hours of maintenance for every hour in the skies, pushing its hourly cost of flying to more than $44,000, a far higher figure than for the warplane it replaces, confidential Pentagon test results show. (...)

"It is a disgrace that you can fly a plane [an average of] only 1.7 hours before it gets a critical failure" that jeopardizes success of the aircraft's mission, said a Defense Department critic of the plane who is not authorized to speak on the record. Other skeptics inside the Pentagon note that the planes, designed 30 years ago to combat a Cold War adversary, have cost an average of $350 million apiece and say they are not a priority in the age of small wars and terrorist threats...'

STOP the Military-Industrial Complex !!
Cancel the F-22 !!
Cancel Star Wars !!
Health care and insurance should be affordable to all.  No one should be denied health care (with or without insurance).  A healthy population is a working population period.  The insurance companies should NOT be the ones dictating to the doctor or patient which treatments they can receive period!  What's wrong with our system today is many fold 1) Insurance companies have dictated the costs and treatments 2)  Many in Congress (both sides) are tied to the health/drug industries 3)  Many are without coverage and those are the folks that are truly making life or death decisions 4) Congress gets their own coverage for life 5) Repukes have been a big road block in trying to fix the health care problem (while both sides own the problem).  The way to fix this is many fold as well 1)  Lobbying by the health/drug industry must be banned altogether! 2)  Any member of Congress that is tied to those industries must shed their ties altogether period! 3) Congress must pass a public plan that covers all within 3 years or they lose their coverage altogether period! This is radical, when you have people making life or death decisions because of health care coverage that is not affordable or the lack of------THAT IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder what kind of federal assistance those making $88,000 can expect?  Seems a bit high to me, but obviously, I haven't seen or read the details.  Of course, that probably qualifies me for Congress at this point.

Tell it to the DMV & auto insurers,
Jonathan - it could be argued for the interstate commerce clause that Congress has the right to regulate health care.

I personally disagree with philosophy and am a big believer in a strong 10th amendment, but as the Supreme Court decided in Gonzales v. Raich, Congress can determine practically any thing to be interstate commerce.  State sovreignity gets weaker and weaker.

I guess that's the difference between us libertarians and the big government Democrats; we can read a Constitution whereas they depend on judges to redefine the Constitution.

It's very sad that about 500 people in MN and a zealous prosecutor in Alaska has costs the Republican party some very needed filibuster power to stop this horrible HCR law.

"......that would expand coverage to nearly all Americans by requiring individuals to get insurance and employers to contribute to the cost......."

This is not health care reform. Doen't anyone listen? People cannot be 'punished' into buying something they cannot afford simple because it is legislated!

I am a small business owner who lost his family's insurance because of a layoff, and now my rates as an indivual with a 'pre-existing condition' simply makes insurance not affordable.....Let's see, the mortgasge, or insurance.......It's a no-brainer! It's not just poor people who have an issue. and between the rates and 5K$ deductables, it is outrageous! Then the insurance companies, when you do go to the doctor, offer to have an "administrator" discuss cheaper treatment options with my doctor.

If the senate does not want to look at a public option, they should ALL have to give up their health insurance...and shop for it as an indvidual.....
i fully agree with Jeff!!!  G NO PEE!!!  doesn't want to work with their President to get anything done, all they want to give us is a STIPEND!!!!
I'll give you an approvement by having a Public Option compared to the private industry,  I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield (Anthem), and because a hospital with many suburban oulets including a Kosair Children Hospital dropped them because they were not paying their bills on time, I will not be covered to see my doctor there, have a operation (already had two)at the same hospital.  In other words, I will have to have my records sent to another hospital where I hve never been treated and see different doctors.  BUT this is supposed to happen if you have a Public Option.  I already knew that the insurance companies can do what ever they want and the Repugnants know this but try to put their behavior onto the Public Option.  I KNOW that millions of Americans have been through this.  If they want to keep this kind of coverage than they can do so.  But to laud the private industries is not only foolish but incomprehensible!  They have no morals!
