Cost at heart of GOP attack

From NBC’s Mike Viqueira

Congressional Budget Office chief Douglas Elmendorf's contention this morning the so-called "cost curve" will bend upward and not downward as a result of reform currently being formulated by Democrats is going to go off like a stink bomb in Congress today.

Along with covering the 50 million Americans who are uninsured, the raison d-etre of this whole thing is to do something about the runaway costs of health care, which is closing in on amounting to one-fifth of gross domestic product and is considered a drag on the economy.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded minutes later by asserting that the legislation will change during the course of the legislative process, now underway in earnest today on the House side as committees take up and mark up the bill.

"I think we can bend the curve more," Pelosi conceded, but not before taking a shot at the CBO for declining to count savings afforded by expanded preventive care. Notwithstanding the current to-ing and fro-ing, Pelosi says, "I am confident that the president can sign a bill in the fall."

Before Elmendorf spoke, House GOP whip Eric Cantor reprised the Republican attack on the president's policies at a press conference.

"This stimulus plan has been a flop,” he said, adding, “This is President Obama's economy.”

Video: The Financial Times’ Chrystia Freeland joins MSNBC’s Carlos Watson and Richard Wolffe to debate whether President Barack Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package is actually working.

Next up is House Minority Leader John Boehner for his weekly session with reporters.

Cantor appeared with a small group of House Republican freshmen who took turns blasting the health-care bill as placing an onerous tax burden on small business. The GOP line of attack is basically this: that the $280/350k surcharge will hit small businesses the hardest because of the way that many are structured for tax reporting purposes.

That assertion is under dispute.

*** UPDATE *** Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement:

The Director of the Congressional Budget Office confirmed today what we have been saying for weeks: the health care spending plan that some are trying to rush through Congress would actually make things worse. Americans want reform that makes health care more affordable and accessible, not a so-called reform that leads to rising costs and a government takeover of the whole health care system. Americans saw what happened when some in Congress rushed through the trillion-dollar stimulus bill earlier this year. They don’t want us to make the same mistakes on something as important and personal as health care. Today's CBO testimony should be a wake-up call. Instead of rushing through one expensive proposal after another, we should take the time we need to get things right--especially at a time when hundreds of thousands of Americans are losing jobs every month.

The GOP is DOA.

Name ONE item in the current budget that is MORE important than providing for the health needs of all Americans.

Time to gut some pet projects and get this thing DONE.
And for how many years has the CBO gotten it wrong?  Their projections, while relied upon, have consistently been wrong.  I find it interesting that the Hospitals felt they could meet the administration to the tune of $400Billion in cost savings.  I am sure there are plenty of 'savings' dollars there, we just need to keep turning over the rocks and pick up the cash.
The righties say NO to EVERYTHING so it turns into NOTHING!

NO=N-ZERO:
Cantor, STFU.  You and the rest of the RepubliKLANs followed W over a cliff, no questions asked when it came to spending.

What say you Repukes at the 100 Billion a year spent in Iraq, for an illegal invasion.....with the loss of life.

The loss of life which can't even be calculated!

OWN YOUR MISTAKES....
If you are doing relatively well in NYC, then expect your tax rates to be near 60% if health reform goes through and Cap and Tax. So what incentive is there to work harder?

And if they have any shortfalls and are unable to tax the "rich" anymore, then expect them to come after the middle class.

For all intents and purposes, Cap and Tax IS a tax on the middle class and poor. Companies don't pay taxes, consumers do.

The socialist Utopia is coming to fruition.
Yeah, cuz the Congressional Budget Office is ALWAYS right.

"This stimulus plan has been a flop,” he said, adding, “This is President Obama's economy.”

No, the RESPONSE to this economy is President Obama's. Considering that it took guys like Cantor, Boehner and that idiot Bush years to wreck it, it will take some time to fix it.

It's downright comical how Republicans love to tout personal responsibility - as long as they don't have to take any of it themselves. Morons...
House GOP whip Eric Cantor, This stimulus plan has been a flop,” he said, adding, “This is President Obama's economy.”

really how the hell can this be the president economey 6 months in to his term, when it was in the tank when he took office,
eric you are a stupid man, every body knows that this whole mess was a result of former president george bushs failed ecnomic policys. that gave tax breaks to the rich that screwed middle class. and once again the main part of stimulus will not be spent till the first quarter of next year. but he know what. he is just blowing crap to the media and there just loving the headlines.
Why do we keep hearing about Republican opposition to this poor attempt at Health Care reform. Yes, virtually all Republicans will rightly oppose this legislation, but 1/3 of Democrats are against this as well. The majority of the nationas elected officials oppose this legislation, but the extreme left will try to bully and impose their agenda on the country. Right now, back room deals are going on to either incent or twist the arms of Democrats to support this bill.
Oh-oh. The Democrats were trying to hide the true costs of their little HCR bills, but the CBO had to stick their nose into it.

Anybody with a brain knows the Democrats are low-balling the costs of the program, and over-estimating any "savings" they are claiming. This turkey of a bill will cost American taxpayers at least double what the Pelosi and the Democrats are stating.
Does Boehner answer reporters questions at his session with the media? Or does he make his statement and then run away like Pelosi does?
[I think we can bend the curve more," Pelosi conceded, but not before taking a shot at the CBO for declining to count savings afforded by expanded preventive care.]
--Preventive care is one of phrases that sounds great and would probably make a better healthcare system.  I'm skeptical of the cost savings (possible), certainly not to the degree Pelosi hopes.  It would be interesting for the CBO to take a look at preventive care verses our current care.  I hope they do.

I've wondered why if preventive care saves money, why don't more insurance companies insure in such a way?  It would seem like a great way to beat a competitor.  Hence my skepticism--and no you liberals, the private insurers are not merely avoiding preventive care because of their evilness.

I hope the press presses on whether preventive care is fiscally better and not just a cool phrase.  (It might be worth it if it does cost more, better healthcare ya know).

So what is anybody doing about the run away costs of government?
Pelosi is running into the same problems Baucus did. She's running out of people to tax.

Not buying what the GOP is selling

Fine. If it'sthat important, then fund HCR by cutting, lets say, Social Security payments. That's probably the only place you'll be able to get enough money to fund this monstrosity.
Now let us be fair and not petty for this discrimination is towrds all races who are close or in a poverty state this America fools we deserve to have what ever this Country needs to make sure folk's have access to Health Care for real it's funny about the GOP for it was cool and okay for us to borrow from China to fund the things they wanted but now we want to use our own resouces to help oue Nation and they have lip service boy oh boy and they wonder why Sotomayor made hert comment's back then for I feel it now and I have health Care.
...you have to admit that Barack is at least trying to get the U.S. out of this mess his predecessor left for him, for us.

No, no I don't admit that at all.  He's trying to punish us all for being arrogant, remember? and for striving to prosper.
It’s always about the almighty $$$ with the GEENOPEER’S!

Amazing they never bat an eye about the cost of a WAR in money & lives based on lies but god forbid we help out American’s for a change…

Cantnor Won’t or Even Try & Boner – why they’re even givin a voice is beyond me – same old song & dance out of Fred & Ginger!

I’ll let you decide which one is which!

Yeah… I know Country First!  What a JOKE!
No problem sending billions to an unnecessary war in Iraq but protest a dime for Americans having affordable healthcare. That's the way to support America and Americans GOPers. It shows where the priorities lie.
Health care costs in this country will never come under control until physicians and patients alike address futility care in the last 30 days of life.  The use of hospice services in this country is extremely low, physicians struggle to have difficult conversations regarding end of life with patients and patients struggle to come to accept that additional treatment may not be of benefit.  So many cancer patients are admitted to hospitals and continue to receive treatments (ie chemo, etc) in the last 30 days of life.  If we end up with a system such as in other countries this will have to be addressed.

Senator Kennedy should be thankful he does not live in the UK.  A 78 year old with a glioblastoma would not be authorized to receive the treatment he gets in this country, based on cost-effectiveness.  But he, like other wealthy individuals if Obamacare goes through, will be able to afford the MD Anderson type of care while the rest of you will not.
Jeff D. Evantson IL - really how the hell can this be the president economey 6 months in to his term, when it was in the tank when he took office,

Why can't it be? Obama's is the one that has increased the deficit spending by 4 times that over Bush. Obama is the one that threatened an 8% unemployment rate if congress didn't pass his massive Stimulus plan. Obama is the one trying to tax a trillion more dollars out of the economy to fund his crappy health care reform. The market and businesses are making decisions based on what he does. And the economy contines to decline under Obama's leadership.

The economy is most definitely Obamas. He even said so the other day. "I own it" Obama said. Were you not paying attention?
Humana in Louisville, KY is telling its employees that if the Public Option comes to fruition that they will lose their jobs!  I know that the Insurance companies are spending $1M a day on advertisng against the Public Option, but to scare your employees is disgusting.  These people are really scared and as a lot of them do not even listen to the news to know what is going on, they believe them, and that is what Humana is relying on.  These are no patriotic Americans, these are pigs feeding at the trough!
Insurance companies don't cover preventive care because employers and their employees change carriers every few years and there is no PROFIT in helping someone stay healthy for another insurance company's benefit!  Since 1/2 of our illness - heart disease, diabetes, etc. are preventable with better diet and exercise there is HUGE savings in preventive care - but hard to quantify by the bean counters in DC.
THIS IS IT!

The healthcare reform bill released by the House Of Representatives is an excellent bill as I understand it. It is carefully written, and thoughtfully constructed, informed, prudent and wise. This bill will save trillions of dollars, and millions of your lives.

This is the type of bill that all Americans can feel good about. And this is the type of bill that has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of healthcare for all Americans.  Rich, middle class and poor a like. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and all other party affiliations. This bill has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life of every American.

The house healthcare bill should be viewed as the minimum GOLD STANDARD by which all other proposed healthcare legislation should be judged. All supporters of true high quality healthcare reform should now place all your support behind this healthcare reform bill released by the United States House Of Representatives, as the minimum Gold standard for healthcare reform in America.

You should all now support this bill with all your might, and all of your unrelenting tenacity. This healthcare bill is a VERY, VERY GOOD! bill for all of the American people. Fight tooth, and nail for every bit of this bill if you have too. Be aggressive, creative, and relentless for this bill.

AND FIGHT!! like your life and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. BECAUSE IT DOES!

Yes. We see it in the states like California and New York. States can't print money, so where their liberal policies got them are easy to see.

The federal government though is catching up. You can only print so much money without bad things happening to the overall economy, and we've also reached that point.
FR-- Before Elmendorf spoke, House GOP whip Eric Cantor reprised the Republican attack on the president's policies at a press conference.

"This stimulus plan has been a flop,” he said, adding, “This is President Obama's economy.”
##################################################

Cantor is justa as irresponsible as his leadership. History has recorded their reckless partasin administration and they didn't have sense enough to "try" to cover their asses, they were too arrogant.

As history records you butts Eric:

12.By October 2008, due to increases in domestic and foreign spending, the national debt had risen to $11.3 trillion, an increase of over 100% from the start of the year 2000 when the debt was $5.6 trillion.

13.By the end of Bush's presidency, unemployment climbed to 7.2%.

14.The perception of President Bush's effect on the economy is significantly affected by partisanship. Meaning …the REPUBLICAN PARTY.

Even a "cat" has sense enough to cover it's s*** Cantor!
Clara Kansas City, MO - And for how many years has the CBO gotten it wrong?

If the CBO is wrong, it's usually on the them under-estimating costs. And being wrong on a one time expenditure is one thing. Being wrong on the biggest expenditure and entitlement of all time would be truly tragic.

A quite whining. We all know the Democrats are understaing the cost of the health care. Get it legislated in and we'll worry about it later, that's the Democrats idea of fiscal responsibility.
Cost of health care is ridiculous - but what really needs to be looked at is the real reason why people are unhealthy and need this service so much.

Studies show that 50 to 70 percent of chronic illnesses are do to life style - amazing isn't it.

Congress should think of making the HCR bill two fold -

Health Care and Wellness Awareness - a national government ran wellness program included – Ran and contracted by insurance companies and sponsor by willing employees, states, etc.

Tax credits and employer cost reductions would be the motivation factor and should appease some GOPs - (TAXES).

This type of bill will help many healthy Americans stay just that and the unhealthy to slowly join the ranks of the healthy.

Thereby, reducing outrages health cost, litigations, but most important, reducing illnesses and chronic diseases.

Come on congress - let's make the bill an over all change for the American life style - the new healthy life style bill.

It will be cost effective and everyone will benefit.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERCIA

Hey Ellis, the President NEVER said that.

You've been PUNK'D.
Health care costs in this country will never come under control until physicians and patients alike address futility care in the last 30 days of life.

Okay. But, how do you know it's the last 30 days of life?
