AMA backs House health-care bill

From NBC's Mark Murray
In what appears to be a pretty significant development in the fight over health care, the American Medical Association has written House Ways and Means Committee Chairman
Charlie Rangel

a letter supporting the $1 trillion-plus Democratic House health-care bill.

"On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association, I am writing to express our appreciation and support for H.R. 3200, the 'America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009,'" says Dr. Michael Maves, the AMA's executive vice president and CEO.

"This legislation includes a broad range of provisions that are key to effective, comprehensive health system reform. We urge members of the House Education and Labor, Energy and Commerce, and Ways and Means Committees to favorably report H.R. 3200 for consideration by the full House."

Maves concludes, "The AMA looks forward to further constructive dialogue during the committee mark-up process. We pledge to work with the House committees and leadership to build support for passage of health reform legislation to expand access to high quality, affordable health care for all Americans."

Below is the full letter....

July 16, 2009
The Honorable Charles B. Rangel
Chairman, Committee on Ways and Means
U.S. House of Representatives
1102 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Chairman Rangel:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association, I am writing to express our appreciation and support for H.R. 3200, the "America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009." This legislation includes a broad range of provisions that are key to effective, comprehensive health system reform. We urge members of the House Education and Labor, Energy and Commerce, and Ways and Means Committees to favorably report H.R. 3200 for consideration by the full House.

In particular, we are pleased that the bill:
• Promises to extend coverage to all Americans through health insurance market reforms;
• Provides consumers with a choice of plans through a health insurance exchange;
• Includes essential health insurance reforms such as eliminating coverage denials based on pre-existing conditions;
• Recognizes that fundamental Medicare reforms, including repeal of the sustainable growth rate formula, are essential to the success of broader health system reforms;
• Encourages chronic disease management and care coordination through additional funding for primary care services, without imposing offsetting payment reductions on specialty care;
• Addresses growing physician workforce concerns;
• Strengthens the Medicaid program;
• Requires individuals to have health insurance, and provides premium assistance to those who cannot afford it;
• Includes prevention and wellness initiatives designed to keep Americans healthy;
• Makes needed improvements to the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative that will enable greater participation by physicians; and
• Initiates significant payment and delivery reforms by encouraging participation in new models such as accountable care organizations and the patient-centered medical home.

The AMA looks forward to further constructive dialogue during the committee mark-up process. We pledge to work with the House committees and leadership to build support for passage of health reform legislation to expand access to high quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

This year, the AMA wants the debate in Washington to conclude with real, long overdue results that will improve the health of America's patients.

Sincerely,
Michael D. Maves, MD, MBA

Ron Paul just took a swipe at government run health care. He said the government never gets it right on the cost estimates, they are always low by 100%, 200%, sometimes wvern more. "It will cost more then a trillion dollars", Paul states.

This bill is tanking quickly in Congress, but more importantly, across America.
Change is here - get on board or get out of the way.
What's the AMA care? With universal coverage, that means that they'll have more doctors to represent because more patients equals more doctors. They don't much care who pays them, just as long as they are paid.
AMA is just covering it's butt in case this crappy bill manages to pass.

And Rangle, you pay those taxes yet?
This is the very first time the AMA is on-board for HCR. They have always been afraid of "socialized medicine". Thanks MDs for taking a sound position so strongly on this important issue.

OK, GOPers and Blue Dogs, if the MDs are on-board along with all other stakeholders, what is the problem with passing this landmark legislation? Are you afraid to offend your lobbyist buddies?

HCR NOW!
then let the AMA pay for it. Make sure they make every service I need available when I need it, not three years later.
Wow I'm glad I was sitting down when I saw the title of this article, that really floors me and you could knock me over with a feather right about now.

I never knew the AMA had it in them to be honest about health care reform or to ever give the green light to a Democratic Plan.  I'm going to have to reevaluate my very low regard for the AMA once the House Bill passes both the House and Senate.  Maybe someone at the AMA overlooked their politics and realized what a boon for the medical industry and the American people the House Health Care Reform Bill will be.

With the AMA backing the House Bill it's rather lights out for the dopes of nope on killing this excellent legislation that will finally fix our screwed up private health care system that is the laughingstock of the world.  Looks like the AMA is abandoning the party of sore losers to side with the winners.  Ha ha repugnant ones stick the AMA endorsement in your pipes and smoke that!

Pass Health Care Reform with the Public Option Now!
I see Obama has been twisting some arms over at the AMA......
To Tank Johnson In Texas...

Stay Healthy and Young, because you will be the first one to cry if you are without healthcare.

I disagree with you on Americans NOT wanting to fix Healthcare across the country.  Americans generally, want the change, but don't want to pay for it in higher taxes.  Every time I walked into an E.R. without healthcare for the five years I was without it, guess what?? -- You were paying for me anyway.

Tank Johnson, Texas

Hey Tank - Only an idiot would be in the tank for that cheapskate anarchist Ron Paul.  Since when has he ever been right about anything?  Too bad you didn't read this article before posting your clueless comment because with the AMA's blessing the Democrats are going to cram health care reform with the public option down your throat!  That deadbeat anarchist ron paul should be run out of the country because with citizens like him we sure don't need any enemies.

In Ron Paul We Bust!
In the AMA We Trust!
What is the deal with you nah-sayers and cynics anyway? Have you pulled your children out of public education yet? No? Well why not, it's government run!

Make sure to avoid the roads, bridges, and public transportation too, its all socialist!!!!

Health care is getting passed, count on it. And we will even share the benefits of affordable with you haters, just in time before your ulcers send you to the E.R.

Thank us later.
Maybe the AMA needs to go look at what's going in the Socialistic State of Massachusetts. Seems their hospitals are running at loss, government apparently isn't paying their bills and are also forcing (there's that word again) the hospitals to treat more people then they can handle.

And Obama wants this for the entire country.

It must be TOUGH being a Republican

LOL !!!
Democrats have a choice. Vote for one of the health care bills, or keep their job.
Geez, can Rethuglicans do anything but whine these days? Enough already with the negative and obstructionist comments from those on the right with no constructive criticism on how to reform health care and cut the costs of the system.

The simple fact is that the United States currently spends more on health care than any other country in the world, and yet most measures of public health care show that Americans are not as well off as citizens of other developed nations that spend less but keep their people healthier.

Out-of-control health care costs are crippling our economy and making us less competitive internationally. The truth is that we are all going to have to share some of the sacrifice to make reform happen and to pay for it in the name of a civilized society. It's easy to complain and gripe about anything that comes out of Congress, but our current system is simply unsustainable. It's time for conservative Democrats, and even Republicans, to acknowledge that and try to find the common ground that ignores the special interests and puts America first.
It's looking more and more like we have a rogue government.
Thank you AMA you offered something that can now be debated and worked with. Your willingness to at least get in the game and set to accomplish something grants you a little better light in my eyes. I may not agree with all you listed, due to not knowing without full explanation with each point stated but your trying and that's more then some of the people we elected to serve us.

Yes we can people get this done but we must first have willing minds. Personnally I think you could take a few of us on this form, stick us in a room and do better then the people who are suppose to work for us.
The AMA endorse this? It's time to read the fine print on this bill.

In any case, the '$1 trillion dollar' scare phrase being passed about is getting old. That number is irrelevant unless you spread it out over the time you spend it. Over ten years is about $100 Billion a year, and that's not going to bankrupt America.

Where are we going to get the money? someone once asked me. Well the US is spending around $120-200 billion annually on the Iraq war, pull out, get that money that was supposed to go to no-bid contracts for Private Military companies and spend it on the American people. Its money better spent.

I propose we pass a law requiring all members of congress and the senate to have the same level of access and treatment to healthcare as the general public, that will get them off their butts to do something about this.
Wonder how repuglicans are going to spin this news after touting how skeptical the powerful and "conservative" AMA was of Obama's speech a few weeks back. Seems the speech went over better than thought. Guess repugs will just say the AMA is a communist organization that pals around with Ayers to explain this away.
BoZo:  '...1/3 of the cars on the road today dont have auto insurance (according to AAA)

3/4 of the people dont have life insurance
(according to AmMedTracking)

1/6 of homes dont have homeowners insurance
(according to FEMA)

7/8 of people dont have long term disability insurance

2/3 of people dont have dental insurance
(according to the ADA)...'

Maybe we should DO SOMETHING about it
Did all of this just happen in the last 5 months ??
(Hint: It happened during the last 8 Years)
(Remember that doofus who saw WMDs in Iraq??)

Obama is FIXING HEALTH CARE !!
After 8 YEARS OF REPUBLICAN RUIN !!

DEAL WITH IT !!!

Who were the little dittoe heads who said Health Care was DOA ??
IN YOUR FACE !!

GO OBAMA !!

1 Democrat plan + 160 Republican amendments = bipartisan
Have you noticed a pattern starting to emerge of the GOP and the media showing initial bluster e.g. the ranting over the stimulus, tea parties, wise Latinas etc., only to show that they do not have the stomach for the fight.

The Obama people just push on regardless and get the job done with the minimum of fuss while Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity work themselves into a frenzy.

This should shut up GOP criticisms of the two bills. The AMA is hardly a liberal organization and has shown little willingness to partner with Democrats - or even Obama- in the recent past.

This is big...

1) CW says something will be passed.  The AMA needs to play ball.

2) Look at the things the AMA is pleased about.  More money for doctors and more patient coverage (morally important).  Not once did they refer to anything related to sustainable health care system--and that is what I am wishful for.  Social security, medicare, medicaid.
>>>Health care costs in this country will never come under control until physicians and patients alike address futility care in the last 30 days of life.
------------- Okay. But, how do you know it's the last 30 days of life? Just Wondering (Sent Thursday, July 16, 2009 1:37 PM) (from another thread) <<<

Too easy.  It will be if care is forgone.
$1 Trillion dollars??!!!!!!

Has that sunk in?????

Ron Paul better do more than take a "swipe" at this!!!!!!!
I guess Obama meeting with all those doctors did help after all.
Thank-you AMA!  Maybe I'll join now.  I guess the insurance companies have finally killed too many people.  Too bad it has taken so long.
Getting HCR legislation passed looks more promising everyday.  The AMA typically is against such measures but most medical providers recognize that the lack of health care for everyone and the high costs are detrimental to quality care.

Although I like Ron Paul because he speaks his mind, he doesn't approve much of anything.  What he says may appeal to government minimalists but it is not always what is good for everyone or the country.   Something that is often ignored by those who oppose HCR is that the CBO does not take into consideration any of the reductions that will happen as the program is implemented so you really get only the costs not the savings.

Some of you need to stop listening to FOX, and Limbaugh and do some research.  This is the same arguments and negative attacks we have seen for 70 years.  The conservatives didn't like medicare either but without it, many elderly would simply die.  Maybe that's what they'd like--the elderly and poor to just go away then they'd have all that money to spend on more wars.
The AMA Represents only a small percentage of all MD's in the USA. They are scared blind that they will be targeted as the next bogey-men after the insurance industry goes out of business.
I want all Americans to have my hewalth-care coverage!! I am covered by the VA....
A good start on paying for optional health care would be to put a 3 to 5% sales tax on all imported retail goods.  This would be a good boost to Buy America
And those who it would help the most would also be paing for it in taxes (walmart shopers) this would lesson the wedge between those who are making bank off the backs those they pay nothing
Carrie

That's just a terrific idea! It isolationist. It will make force other countries put a tariff on American goods that are sold in their countries. It's a regressive tax. It's a very large tax. It's inflationary. It will kill off more jobs.

It's got it all.
Who on God's earth could be against health reform to do away with the ridiculous situation of denying health coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

I'm rooting for you Mr. President. Now you have the Doctors on your side you will succeed.
Dumb and dumber - the AMA surpasses all expectations. This is quickly becoming much like a 3rd world country, thanks to O, Pelosi, and Co.
When does it end?
I am a doctor and don't support the AMA.  The AMA represents less than 25% of all doctors.  They certainly do not speak for the majority of doctors.  The AMA has been increasingly lost membership due to its left-leaning position among my colleagues. I don't really understand what their role is anyway. Is it an academic organization? Is it a union?  does it work for the interests of doctors, patients, ins companies or government?   It seems to say it does all of these roles, but apparently none of them too well.
The only provision I want to see in a bill if passed is that Congress (House and Senate) and all government workers mandatorily be covered - not exempted as currently stated in the bill.
This is only fair for Americans!
This is a nice surprise and sure to give health reform added momentum.

The AMA could have just as easily opposed the House bill or stay on the sidelines. To act positively in favor of the House version, which is the broadest statement of reform to date, the AMA gives real reassurance to many citizens that the reform is real and will get done.
The AMA is ONLY concerned in ways of lining their pockets. Government Healthcare means more potential doctors under their wing to which means more money. they could give less thatn a damn who pays for it.
I am a doctor in Houston and I dont know any of my fellow physicians that are members of the AMA. This is a very small organization that represents WHO? I think they consist of about 22-24% of the total physicians in this country. They have become more of a political organization than anything else.
THIS IS IT!

The healthcare reform bill released by the House Of Representatives is an excellent bill as I understand it. It is carefully written, and thoughtfully constructed, informed, prudent and wise. This bill will save trillions of dollars, and millions of your lives.

This is the type of bill that all Americans can feel good about. And this is the type of bill that has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of healthcare for all Americans.  Rich, middle class and poor a like. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and all other party affiliations. This bill has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life of every American.

The house healthcare bill should be viewed as the minimum GOLD STANDARD by which all other proposed healthcare legislation should be judged. All supporters of true high quality healthcare reform should now place all your support behind this healthcare reform bill released by the United States House Of Representatives, as the minimum Gold standard for healthcare reform in America.

You should all now support this bill with all your might, and all of your unrelenting tenacity. This healthcare bill is a VERY, VERY GOOD! bill for all of the American people. Fight tooth, and nail for every bit of this bill if you have too. Be aggressive, creative, and relentless for this bill.

AND FIGHT!! like your life and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. BECAUSE IT DOES!

The government has not been successful in running anything ontime and within budget no matter who has been president and whose party was "in charge". Costs always go up. Yes we need health care reform but not this way. Another entitlement that will not go away. Most people could afford a major medical policy if they gave up their cell phone and cable.
Well said Philimus. It's almost as if the people on the right who are against this think that the US system, in it's current state, is the best system run at the cheapest price?

Again, ignorance is bliss I guess..........

Stop spending on wars and buying expensive military equipment and invest in your people!
Why wouldn't they be for it. They stand to gain 50 million new customers with the taxpayers picking up the bill. Preety sweet deal.
To all the naysayers:  Please come up with an alternative medical reform plan that does ALL of the following:

1.  covers everybody
2.  provides comprehensive benefits to everyone: all catastrophic health care costs and most regular and preventive care
3.  has a fair and affordable funding mechanism
4.  takes at least some burden off employers
5.  reimburses health care providers fairly and quickly
6.  makes sure that no one has to file bankruptcy because of medical bills
7. eliminates at least some significant inefficiencies in the health care system
8.  brings the rate of health care inflation under control

Give up?
why wouldnt he support it hes still under investigation, hes hoping they will sweep it under the carpet like all other rats....Washington for change, where
This really is a landmark, and it raises my opinion of the professionalism and compassion of a group that professes to have both, but often offers neither.

Maybe they've grown tired of having their decisions second guessed by accountants at the insurance companies.  Granted some of that will continue--ratoining is a fact of life, just that now the rationing will be done by people who have at least SOME accountability to the public.

As for Ron Paul, who gives a damn what (if) he thinks?  He represents a tiny fraction of the adult population and a somewhat larger fraction of college-age ignoramuses who think they're going to live forever.
Heck.  Ron Paul probably would like government to turn off traffic signals.  It'd save taxpayers money, and besides, who gave government the right to say what direction we can move and when!

"Tank" is just another Texan whose mind has "seceded" from reality.  Well, Tank, take THIS in.  The Republican Party of Harris County (Houston) is practically broke.  They are behind on paying the rent for their offices, are dramatically behind on fund-raising, have laid off full time staffers, and cut the pay of other staffers.  This in one of the largest county Republican constituencies in the nation.

Hope you are young and never get sick.  If you're in your 40's, get cancer, and lose your job, under today's standards, you'll lose your health insurance unless you are very wealthy and can pay COBRA.  You'll be uninsurable, and won't have a prayer's chance.  That what you want?
Most doctors oppose this socialist bill that will NOT improve healthcare quality or access. Now we see that the AMA endorsement came from Dr. Mays who is a big democratic donor:

Gee...I wonder what the Obama administration has promised him. I can tell you that the doctors are furious.
Wow. This might actually happen. I'm excited.
They have lost my membership.
Funny the Board didn't get an approval vote from the membership.
After hearing Congressional testimony from the major health insurers that they INTENTIONALLY TARGET WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER for the act of rescission, where they cancel your health insurance after you get sick, I have been holding my breath that health insurance reform will pass before any of my loved ones get stricken with the disease.  1 in 8 women gets breast cancer in their lifetime, and health insurance companies are admittedly targeting them.

This corruption must be stopped.  Thank you to Congress and the Obama adminstration for standing up to the VERY powerful special interests, and working for the American people.  We can't fight these massive companies on our own.
