Lugar says he'll vote for Sotomayor

Indiana Sen. Dick Lugar appears to have become the first Republican to officially say he'll be voting for Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Lugar doesn't sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee, so his vote won't come until the nomination reaches the full Senate.

There are other Republicans who may end up voting for Sotomayor --  including Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe; Florida Sen. Mel Martinez; and perhaps South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham. But they haven't officially said so yet.

Video: Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., Democratic Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, expresses his confidence that the majority of senators will vote for Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation and that she will be sitting with the Supreme Court when they reconvene in September.

"I have listened to the testimony of Judge Sonia Sotomayor before the Senate Judiciary Committee, carefully reviewed her public service record, and reviewed recommendations from Indiana constituents and colleagues here in the Senate," Lugar said in a statement.

"Judge Sotomayor is clearly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court and she has demonstrated a judicial temperament during her week-long nomination hearing. Judge Sotomayor has had a distinguished career of public service. She is well regarded in the legal community and by her peers. I will vote to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States."

The Republicans should vote for Sotomayor. It's likely that she's more conservative than Souter. This wasn't worth the fight. The Republicans played this well. Ask the hard questions that your constituents demand, be respectful and confirm her. The addition of Sotomayor does nothing to shift the Supreme Court.

We just need the other justices to hang in there for three more years.
You are very wrong that unions are killing manufacturing in the US. What is causing US manufacturing to grow less slowly than the rest of the world is that basic labor is far cheaper outside the US. That is not unions, but the fact that Americans won't work for what people in India and China will work for. In 2005, average monthly wages in India were $25!!!

Which completely explains why the foreign car makers with plants in the US with non-union employees are doing just fine.
I'd vote her just on her good looks!
I agree with DG in Houston.  A liberal justice replacing a liberal justice isn't worth the fight.   Besides, Republicans need to hold their fire for health care and cap and trade.
So who's job is it to get a leash on Biden? Someone let him lose again and now he's telling people we need to bankrupt the country so we don't go bankrupt.
Looks like some of the party of sore losers are going to vote for Sotomayor because they don't want to antagonize people of color.  I'm sure that Lugar will come under attack from that rabid Lush Limburger for his smart decision to vote for her confirmation.

I'm laughing that some are crowing about deadbeat anarchist ron paul's call for an audit of the Federal Reserve.  Yeah let's have that audit and let's start it with Criminal Greenspan who sold us out to Raygunz's VooDoo Tinkle Down economics.  Let's find out how Criminal Greenspan sold us all out to big banking and how he was instrumental in bringing about this economic disaster with deregulation and tax cut wlefare for the rich and greedy.

I'm surprised this cheapskate anarchist who's bent upon destroying our secular democracy is willing to waste taxpayer dollars on such a farsical waste of an audit.  We really ought to be auditing Halliburton, KBR and Blackwater to find out how much taxpayer money they wasted, and oh let's audit that $12 billion bank heist that War Criminals Bush and Cheney performed where $10 billion just disappeared without knowing how it was spent.

All cheapskate anarchist paul wants to do is try to destroy the Federal Reserve and allow anarachy to rule the banking industry.  Just Say No to his Unconstitutional Audit!

Confirm Sotomayor Now!
Why are the liberals (seperate from Democrats, some Democrats seem to have a handle on reality) so grumpy? Heavy majorites in the House and Senate, extremist liberal President, but yet the libs whine and moan. Still haven't gotten your income redistribution from the rich is my guess. Everyone hasgotten something, like the banks, aig, car makers, but not the little libs. Well, good luck with that, cause I don't think you're ever going to get it.
Glad to hear it . . . maybe one day, when we all grow up, we can have real hearings for judges where they can be themselves and be treated like actual people. Maybe.

You asked what else could President Obama be doing to create jobs in the economy.  How about he gets congress to change the so called stimulus bill so that more funds are authorized to be spent in 2009 than in 2010 and 2011?  Why are more funds authorized for 2011 than 2009?

Alan,

I think that a large part of the problem is the dual tension between wanting to spend the money quickly and wanting to spend the money wisely.

We all want it spent faster, but not so fast that it is stolen from us like much of the TARP money was.

As a side note:

Alan, are you saying that you agree that a stimulus package was needed to spur the economy and provide relief to those who have already lost their jobs?

I ask because it seems that many of the same folks who advocated NO stimulus are now complaining about the rate that the stimulus money is being allocated.

Isn't that trying to have your cake and eat it too?

I agree with Luger.  Don't drop over with shock.

The criteria for approving the nominations of justices is perfectly clear-is the person qualified; does the person have a clear understanding of the constitution; is the person fair and unbiased.

I would be unwilling to have my life and career be judged on the basis of one opinion; I don't believe it is fair to judge Judge Sotomayor based on the Ricci case.  I am more concerned that she believes that some of the articles of the Bill of Rights do not apply to the states; hopefully, the other 8 justices on the Court will pursuade her otherwise.

I do not believe that the Obama standard for approving nominations should EVER be used by the Senate.  I don't really care what is in the Justices 'hearts', I care what is in their HEADS.

That is the standard that should be used.  By that standard, she should be confirmed.
The Republicans should vote for Sotomayor. It's likely that she's more conservative than Souter. This wasn't worth the fight. The Republicans played this well. Ask the hard questions that your constituents demand, be respectful and confirm her.

Never thought I would be saying this BUT your RIGHT in you comments above with the exception of the hard questions... bringing up 'sound bytes' from years past over & over doesn't count as hard questions in my book! After all the Repub's were the ones that keep trying the stall tactics because they wanted more time to review her case files...and in the end the resorted to just played more of the Gotcha questions than anything else!

You may also be right on her 'leanings'... I'm not convinced she's a 'left' as I would of perferred but I'm willing to take my chances...

As for the respect thing... not so much... they came across as mean & petty and that is going to cost them dearly with the Woman & Latino votes in future elections! If they want to continue on the path of shrinking their 'base'... Go FOR it!  That's good news for us lefties!

Other than that they should pick their battles more carefully and stop with the NO to EVERYTHING!

Thank you Masta' Lugar!....

Prosecute War Profiteers.....follow all the money that they have hidden off-shore.

At every turn, My President, finds (without really looking), corruption and abuse......

Condi Rice sure is keeping a low profile!  No doubt scared to death of being complicit, which she is, and sent to JAIL!

I find your lack of knowledge regarding Constitutional law to be profoundly disturbing.  Please, point out to me which section of the Constitution even mentions the Federal Reserve, let alone bans full audits of it.

Actually, don't bother, because I can show you exactly where it says that such an action IS constitutional: Article I, Section 8.

At the very least, it's good to see you showing your true colors.  I suspected the whole "government transparency" thing was a scam.  Let's just hope Obama isn't a hypocrite as well.
Now that is the Sen. Lugar that I grew to respect.

I see many posts relating to other issues in the area - I would not use banks or Chamber of Commerce and liberal in the same breath - both groups are really conservative in their agenda.  You got to know your players - keep a scorecard.
I agree with DG in Houston. Sotamayor is more Conservative than Souter.  There are things I picked up in her answers that told me that.  This is NOT a Liberal Judge.

So you worked for years to get rid of the Republicans, and now that you did, know you want to know what they think? And when they do show up and tell you, line Cheney has, you whine that they should just shutup.

You guy and gals really need to grow up.
no joe, no bo,nj

Agree with much on your post, but most there are section of the US Constitution that apply ony to Congress making no law.  The case of the DC is much different in that the US Constitution (Article I section 9) specifically provides that the Congress has exclusive legislation rights over that area.  So what may be unconstitional in DC may not be for the rest of the US.
Has anyone noticed that Leftist Leahy closely resembles the punk, schoolyard bully Letterman?  Something to do with the alliteration of "L's" or just losers to the power of 10?
