First thoughts: Six months in

*** Six months in: Six months ago today, Barack Obama was sworn in as the nation’s 44th president. But it seems much longer ago than that, doesn’t it? Since that cold day in January, so much has happened: the legislative fight over the stimulus, the rescue from those Somali pirates, the budget battle, the president’s first European trip, the Obama vs. Cheney duel over national security, the Sotomayor nomination, the Cairo speech, the aftermath of the Iranian election, the Russia-Italy-Ghana trip, and the current fight over health care. In his article in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, Matt Bai likened Obama to an iPod shuffle. "Obama is the nation’s first shuffle president. He’s telling lots of stories at once, and in no particular order. His agenda is fully downloadable. If what you care most about is health care, then you can jump right to that. If global warming gets you going, then click over there.” But there's a danger to this, Bai adds. "Random play may popularize your music in the aggregate, but it doesn’t foster the same kind of investment in the songs themselves. U2 may have more fans than ever, but that doesn’t mean these listeners can name half the tracks on the band’s latest release."

*** Still personally popular, but less so on the issues: Six months in and one piece of conventional wisdom appears to be holding: Obama is personally more popular than his proposals. According to a new Washington Post/ABC poll, the president’s overall approval rating stands at a still-strong 59%. But his ratings on the issues have declined: 49% approve of handling of health care (down eight points since April), 43% approve of his handling of the deficit, and 52% approve of his handling of the economy.

Video: Morning Meeting’s Dylan Ratigan and a panel, which includes NBC’s Chuck Todd, debate whether the country is increasingly becoming unhappy with the president.

*** All Obama, all the time: On the first day of his seventh month in office, the Washington Post also front-pages that Obama is launching an all-out media blitz on health care. “With skepticism about the president's health-care reform effort mounting on Capitol Hill -- even within his own party -- the White House has launched a new phase of its strategy designed to dramatically increase public pressure on Congress: all Obama, all the time." More: “‘Our strategy has been to allow this process to advance to the point where it made sense for the president to take the baton. Now's that time,’ said senior adviser David Axelrod. ‘I don't know whether he will Twitter or tweet. But he's going to be very, very visible.’” Indeed. Today, from the Children’s National Medical Center in DC, Obama will once again deliver remarks on health care. On Wednesday, he’s holding a primetime news conference. And the following day, he heads to Cleveland, OH.

*** One small step for reform, one giant leap for conventional wisdom: Obama's hopes for getting a health-care bill through the Senate lie in the hands of one man: Montana Sen. Max Baucus (D). At some point this week (maybe today), his Senate Finance Committee is going to be releasing more details of his proposal. Can he become the Obama administration’s savior? Will it be one small step for health-care reform legislation getting passed by the August recess? Whatever he announces, it will be one giant leap for health care conventional wisdom. (If you didn’t get our reference to Neil Armstrong’s famous words, today is the 40th anniversary of man’s landing on the moon, and Obama today meets with Apollo 11 crew and NASA Administrator Bolden at 2:00 pm ET.)

*** The Great American Health Care Fight: The other moving parts on health care: In their interviews on the Sunday shows, administration officials (HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and OMB Director Peter Orszag) were no longer demanding that Congress pass their bills before the August recess… Per the Wall Street Journal, Democratic congressional members representing some of the nation’s more affluent areas are expressing concerns about the House health-care bill that would tax high-income earners… Governors are concerned about the bills moving through Congress… Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), per the Washington Post, is stepping back into the national spotlight by writing op-ed and appearing on cable TV to talk about health care (Jindal once served as Louisiana’s top health official)… And RNC Chairman Michael Steele will criticize Obama’s health-care proposals in a speech at the National Press Club at 9:00 am ET.

Video: Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius responds to critics of the proposed health care bills with NBC’s David Gregory on “Meet the Press.”

*** Where’s the cover? Speaking of Sebelius, she wasn't full of answers in her appearance on “Meet the Press.” The fact that she can't definitively talk about which bill the president likes and doesn't makes it that much harder -- right now -- for congressional Democratic leaders to twist arms to get this done. These folks need some public guidance (and cover) if they are going to support, say, a surtax on millionaires. No wonder the White House is signaling that the president is going to try and wrestle even more control of the debate. But he was fully engaged last week and that didn't help. This week, he's doing more TV interviews and the prime time press conference. Will it be enough?

*** Burying bad news: The news, per the AP, that the administration is delaying its budget mid-year review is a signal it’s scared about what the new numbers will show -- making support for new initiatives from Blue Dog Democrats in the House and conservative Dems in the Senate that much more difficult. This is the BIGGEST piece of news no one is paying attention to. Clearly, the White House is trying to bury this news as best they can, in August, post-recess. Speaking of August, the White House set it as the deadline to get those health bills through Congress. It's artificial, but it's a big test politically. Perhaps Obama can withstand letting the August goal slide, but not getting a bill at all this year would be a huge defeat. Then again, it does seem as if, whether they meant to or not, that the expectations game is now in Obama's favor. The debate is about the process more than it is about the separate proposals.

*** I’m sorry, so sorry, please accept my apology:

Yesterday, embattled South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) penned an extraordinary op-ed in the Columbia State newspaper apologizing for his affair and its aftermath. “It is true that I did wrong and failed at the largest of levels, but equally true is the fact that God can make good of our respective wrongs in life,” he wrote. “In this vein, while none of us has the chance to attend our own funeral, in many ways I feel like I was at my own in the past weeks, and surprisingly I am thankful for the perspective it has afforded.” More: “It’s in the spirit of making good from bad that I am committing to you and the larger family of South Carolinians to use this experience both to trust God in his larger work of changing me and, from my end, to work to becoming a better and more effective leader.” http://www.thestate.com/editorial-columns/story/869645.html

“On a long flight from New Mexico to Florida, late in the general election, I [Richard Wolffe] ask him [candidate Obama] about something that his friends know well: that he only engages in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.  H [Obama] smiled broadly and nodded in recognition: ‘Gimme the ball.’”  Renegade pp. 231.

With regard to healthcare, it’s time to give him the ball.  He has beaten the Clintons, the McCain Republicans, and passed the stimulus bill.  Don’t underestimate our President.

BTW:  Feisty, I really enjoyed “Renegade”.  You said it best: Wolffe had a ringside seat.  I especially liked that he did not always follow chronology, but focused on topics and Obama’s character.  The book speaks volumes about how President Obama thinks and the character of the man.

A sadder note:

An American is captured by the Taliban and the Taliban are reporting that they treat captured soldiers better that the US.  To say we won’t do that anymore is to ignore our own crimes.  The House is going to show some courage and look into the matter.   I wonder how Walter Cronkite would have reported this story.
CBO reports his health care plan won't decrease the costs of health care - but instead will significantly increase them.

Colin Powell, who supported the president over his Republican rival, criticized Obama's spending, saying "we can't pay for it all."

At a governors meeting yesterday in Mississippi, both Republican and Democratic governors said health care will cost way too much, and
the governors were very concerned that the federal government would pass more unfunded mandates down to them.

Billionaire/Obama supporter Warren Buffett warned of impending inflation caused by increased government spending. "A country that continuously expands its debt as a percentage of GDP," he said, "and raises much of the money abroad to finance that, at some point, it's going to inflate its way out of the burden of that debt.

Obama-supporting/George W. Bush-hating/billionaire benefactor of hyper-liberal MoveOn.org, George Soros, predicted that the administration's spending and borrowing will trigger inflation and higher interests rates. "As markets revive," he said, "fear of inflation will drive up interest rates, which will choke off any recovery".

Hillary, while in India to apologize for the USs contribution to global warming, asked India leaders to abide by the same phony global warnings carbon output rules the US
is trying to sign into law with Cap & Trade. The India leaders balked at Hillary's request saying that unlike the US, they'd like to keep their economy growing and all keep
their jobs.

Latest count shows about 20 Democratic Senators and 100 Democratic House members oppose the current health care legislation moving through Congress.

Okay, maybe it was a bad week for Obie.
To Obama's ARRA stimulus bill, he and Pelosi both stated, and I quote, would have an "immediate effect" at creating new jobs. Additionally, his number of new jobs was 3.5-4million in the first year. Well subtract the unverified 150,000 new jobs that 3.35-3.85million jobs left to create. Add to that the 3million lost in the past 7months, and he is left with only 6.35-6.85million jobs left to create over the next 5months.

So where are the jobs?
Obama told us during the campaign he didn't want to expand the federal government.

He is.

Obama told you there wouldn’t be any lobbyists in his administration.

There are.

Obama told us he didn't want to take over the banks.

He did.

Obama  told us he didn't want to take over the auto companies.

He did.

Obama  told us if he got his stimulus plan that they shoved through without reading, unemployment wouldn't go over 8%.

It did. It is at almost 10%.

Obama claimed it would "save or create" 600,000 jobs.

It hasn't.

Obama claimed he would post legislation for 5 days before signing it.

It hasn't.

Obama claimed Cap N Trade was a Jobs bill.

It isn't. It is now acknowledged it will raise costs to the average american family. The only thing in dispute is by how much.

He claimed his new Health Care legislation would cut costs and would save money and help our economy.

The CBO just said it wouldn't do any of those things. In fact it would do just the oppoiste and would actually raise the debt and be a major drag on the economy.

Now, when Obama tells you that he DOESN'T want the federal government to take over your health care, Do you really believe him?

It fairly easy to see why Obama's poll numbers weaken everyday
HCR: DOA

Michael Steele, in remarks prepared for delivery at the National Press Club, also said the president, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and key congressional committee chairmen are part of a cabal that wants to implement government-run health care.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Again with another scary word “CABAL”. Be careful America we are under attack.
Obama better put OMB Director Peter Orszag into the backroom, and get him out of the public eye. Talk about a guy with the "Deer in the headlights" look. There is a lot to be scared about with Obama's socialist plans, but Obama's administration representitives shouldn't be the ones looking that scared.
6 months in and so much has happened.  Except for those jobs he promised.  No mention of that.
Looks like Goldman Sachs is in harmony with the government (they don't pay taxes and Barack has made over 1 million off the connection.

Crooked people do crooked things, and no surprise concerning this rabid administration where every wrongdoing is either a "mistake" or an "accident."

When Biden said "you gotta spend money to keep from going bankrupt" it aired on Huckabee's "Joe Biden Comedy Hour." What an insult to America this man is.
The CBO reports a dramitic rise in costs under Obama's health care plan. Those numbers cannot be ignored. Obama will try, and the media will try to bury those numbers, but it's going to be tough sledding to even get the Health Care reform bill passed in one house of Congress, let alone two.
How could Kathleen Sebilous (sp?) be 'full of answers' as you put it? Not too obvious Chuck Todd wrote that paragraph... it reeks of his bias!

Gotcha Gregory NEVER let her finish a question without interrupting her!

His performance was nothing short of DISGUSTING! It was embarassing to watch him salivating all over himself trying to trip her up!  I've had root canals that were'nt as painful as listening to dumbsh*t David!

I made the mistake of tuning in since This Week with George wasn't on yesterday!

Let's just say he didn't disappont with his antics!

Tim Russert must be rolling in his grave with the way Gregory had single handedly self destructed MTP!

Good for First Read for finally bringing up the fact that the Obama White House is trying to bury the budget update that will no doubt report that the economic outlook is not as rosy as they keep thinking it is.  The CBO has now said that the Democratic proposals on health care will cause health care costs to RISE.  And now, Obama is delaying the budget update until AFTER he wants a vote on the largest entitlement program in decades.  I would kinda hope that someone making an intelligent vote on a proposal would want ALL of the information in front of them.  Why is Obama trying to hide these numbers?  How about they release the numbers, allow Congressman to talk to their constituents about their proposals over the recess, and THEN vote on it. Or is it too much to ask for them to make informed votes?

Speaking of Sebelius, she wasn't full of answers in her appearance on “Meet the Press.” The fact that she can't definitively talk about which bill the president likes and doesn't makes it that much harder -- right now -- for congressional Democratic leaders to twist arms to get this done. These folks need some public guidance (and cover) if they are going to support, say, a surtax on millionaires

===================

Obama has left his staff twisting in the wind. The trouble is, Obama has ran out of rich people to tax. Taxing the rich will kill the small businesses,  increasing unemployment, and having ever increasing funding short falls to pay for all his socialist programs. To really get a solid revenue stream to pay for his health care plan, Obama has only choice, tax individuals on their benefit packages. Of course, that will upset Barry's union friedns who are used to getting top shelf healthcare coverage for free.
Thank you President Obama for reminding the American people what a WORKING President and Congress should look like.

Keep up the pressure on Congress to DO THEIR JOBS and finally ADDRESS the many problems that they have been ignoring and patching for decades.

We might not all agree on WHAT needs to be done, but a MAJORITY of us agree that SOMETHING needs to be done.

So enough of the "can't do" talk and phony delays - just roll up your sleeves and EARN the big salaries and golden health benefits that we are paying for you to have.

Congratulations on a PRODUCTIVE six months Mr. President - the American people are counting on you to continue to be a voice of REASON and LEADERSHIP looking out for our interests in the self centered city that is Washington D.C.

I hope that people remember that no matter what happens, President Obama and all of the Congress people and lobbyists are going to be just fine. It is us who are going to be hurt if health care is not reformed - this is not about "hurting"  or "helping" the President - this is about saving lives - human and economic.

P.S. To everyone who says that there is no rush because people can go to the emergency room to be treated . . . last time I checked they didn't give out cancer treatments in the E.R. So I suppose those being diagnosed with cancer who don't have insurance are just out of luck until the "perfect time" presents itself, eh? (Oh, and we STILL have to pay for that as well.)
*** The Great American Health Care Fight:
Health Care Reform--- If my memory serves me correctly…and it does; former president Lyndon Johnson faced the same opposition when he was attempting to ge Medicare enacted. The difference wirh this genertation of politicians of the Republican party and is that they are tasteless, tacky and morally corrupt with the lies they’re telling American’s coupled with the fact that corporations were able to put an end to pension plans.
The old what’s in it for me approch is being used in attempts to block the inactment of Health Care Reform. Insurance companies such as Blue Cross, United Health Care and others are looking to lose billions in profits if HCR is enacted because they have had free reign over  consumers for years.

If I am correct…Blue Cross is a primary insurer of Federal employee’s…those same employee’s that we employ and pay for their coverage with our tax dollars are ready to deny American’s cost affordable health care coverage. Politicans, we are not longer tolerating the soaring cost of health care because of your fear of losing campaign funds from these companies.

Stop the stalling and bickering and pass Health Care Reform now. The token Black Chairman of the RNC (in words only) have no soloutions to offer that reforms health care. Their idea is to stick a band-aid over our mouths by offering a lousy voucher that boost continued profits for insuracne companies, while the issue of health crae continues to soar out of reach for Americans, just as it’s doing now.

P.S. I couldn't stomach Meetr The Press this weekend. David Gregory is not one of my favorite host. Replacement would be nice, he sucks.
An American is captured by the Taliban and the Taliban are reporting that they treat captured soldiers better that the US.  To say we won’t do that anymore is to ignore our own crimes.  The House is going to show some courage and look into the matter.   I wonder how Walter Cronkite would have reported this story.

--------------------------------------------
You mean to tell me that beheading Americans is better treatment????
Since when have the Republicans and nay-sayers been right about anything the President has undertaken to date? They have been dead wrong on how to handle the economy, they have been dead wrong on Judge Sotomayor's ability to sit on the SCOTUS, they have been dead wrong on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the dead wrong list could go on and on. Amazingly, the whiners and complainers seem to gain momentum and they succeed at scaring us thinking the President is tone deaf on these topics. In 2004 these same "terrorist" frightened us into thinking that John Kerry was a not a war hero and had the Swift Boat Liars to prove it, and that same-sex marriage would be the harbinger of death to our great country.

In contrast, the President has been a superb leader when it comes to the economy, and I believe his stance on healthcare reform is the correct course of action.  Medicare and Medicaid is not sustainable on its current path and the entire healthcare system is broken and hemorrhaging internally. The question is not whether we can afford to fix it; we can't afford not to.
FR: The news, per the AP, that the administration is delaying its budget mid-year review is a signal it’s scared about what the new numbers will show --

I'll tell you what the new numbers will show. It will show a widening deficit because less and less people are working. 3 million job loses, and more to come when all the big bankrupt states like NY, NJ, and California make their job cuts. It will show that the government is spending more and more money and getting less and less in return.

But that won't stop Obama and his crew from pushing health care reform on us.
Interesting that Obie wrote a nice testimonial concerning the life and news work of Walter Cronkite, thought by many to be the best ever in his field.

Obie must have gotten this out of Wikipedia or had it written for him because he was way to young to understand the being that was Walter Cronkite.

And Mr. Cronkite was not happy with the current news
reporting, especially when certain
"anchors" and even entire news stations pick sides and mis-report the truth in news.

Cronkite was moderate to liberal but it was a diff world back then when, still, right was right and wrong was wrong. The news world has turn completely upside down in the last 10 years or so, and that is unfortunate.
I'll go ahead and be the first Dem and Obama supporter to admit - Hasn't it been All Obama, All the Time up to now anyway?  You guys forgot to mention his precision 'stealth' swatting of that fly in that one interview.  I hope he never gets intestinal cramps because I feel certain MSM will be there with audio.

I think your assessment of Kathleen Sebelius' discussion is off base.  The facts are that there are a number of items still being discussed and the result will be a hybrid.  Her refusal to pick and choose frustrates you because all you want to be able to report is that Obama won or Obama failed.  You guys don't seem at all interested in the 'end game', just the scoreboard.  It is bizarre to watch sometimes.
these polls just show the degree with which the talking head media jump on the right wing band wagon to distort information. why does a party so completely out of power have such a loud megaphone? when bush led his army the dems. wandered in the wilderness without much press. we hear gloom and doom scenarios to make headlines but these peole do not have middle America's best interests at heart as usual. of course they wil not tell you that we are paying for iraq's national healthcare already. over 1.8 trillion and counting. that's trillion with a T we are building new free hospitals all over that nation. where are the conservatives' cries over that debacle?unbelievable that every other industrialized country in the world (not even conservatives there want to end their programs)has figured this out .our supposedly " Christian" nation just bows to the wishes of the rich and powerful.Scrptures tell us that we will be judged on how thr least of us are treated. If this be the case, then I fear for your souls.
why is pat buchanan still on my airwaves after calling for  palin to hold levi's head under water until he quit moving???? that is outrageous.
Time is Obamas, Pelosis, and Reids enemy. The more time the nation has to look at his health care bill, the less they like it.
Regarding Obama and multitasking -

The President's agenda is shaped considerably by events as they happen "on the ground." In many if not most cases, he has no option but to address them.

In other words: "If not now...when?" "If not him...who?"
Nashville_fan (Sent Monday, July 20, 2009 9:40 AM)

AND because they are uninsured now, if they miraculously get a job with coverage - they will be excluded for one year from treatment due to the "Preexisting Condition" clause.  Good luck surviving cancer for a year untreated.  I am guessing you won't be able to keep the job - Cancer can really make you sick - and how many employers would be empathetic to a new hire who is out sick all the time.  Especially when they know the medical costs for this new employee will send the entire company coverage into escalating premiums for the rest?  Employers are so compassionate about their sick employees.  Sarcasm meter about 92%.
It will be back to campaign mode for Obama and the Democrats this week. Maybe another staged townhall meeting for Obama to hug yet another poor sap. More of hearing how compassionate the liberasl are, well, compassionate with other peoples money.
I'm ready for a good dose of President Obama all over the media telling us like it is.  It's about time that he uses his bully pulpit to preach the gospel of truth and to drown out the lies of the dopes of nope.

I'm really saddened by the death of Walter Cronkite and MSNBC tv did a nice job Friday night of giving him his due.  David Shuster and Rachel Maddow did a nice job of telling his stirring story.  A real pity that the media isn't going bonkers over telling us about him for the better part of 3 weeks the way they did Michael who didn't deserve that kind of tribute.  I so enjoyed getting the news from Walter in the 60's, 70's and unfortunately only the first year of the 80's.  A real pity he was pushed out before he could expose Ronny Raygunz for the liar he was and the lie that Voodoo Tinkle Down economics was

It's not surprising that David Gregory couldn't ask good questions of Kathleen Sebelius, the best interview she gave last week was on The Daily Show as Jon Stewart asked great questions and had an excellent interview with her.  Time for MSNBC to ditch Gregory and get a real reporter in there like Lawrence O'Donnell or Chuck Todd.

Thanks Walter Cronkite!
Yo Fiesty, you are right on about MTP with Sec. HHS. Gregory kept asking her his gotcha Q, interrupting her answers and playing his game. Tim must be disgusted big time. I never watch unless TW is not on. I'll give you one more alternative. Andrea Mitchell would do a heck of a job!

Good thoughts about the President's style from Ron's comments about Renegade which I must get!

I'll add one from my observations. The President was is point guard when he plays hoops. Note that MANY bball games are decided in the last 2 mins of the 4th quarter. Give him the ball and watch him score the buzzer beater.

Media pundits continue to underestimate him as they did throughout the campaign. Not sure why, but I think that is actually in his favor.

FR: As for your snarky analogy between the President's style and U2, he inherited a huge mess and has no choice but to work on all the important issues at one time. Note that he has postponed some like DADT and Immigration reform as they are potentially divisive. He knows how to prioritize it is that there are a lot of high priorities. So, be snarky if you think it's cute. We know where your heads are at, a dark place indeed, lol!

Go HCR!
Ron, Indiana... welcome back you were missed! And thanks for the reference you posted at the top!

Something tells me we're in for another full frontal assualt this week from the 'right'... let them continue with their tirades!  All hate NO substance!

They ALL under estimate THIS President and are going to be in for one HELL of a wake up call when HRC DOES pass this year!

You've been VERY accuate in your previous predictions...what are your thoughts??

If any of you would read rather than listen to cable chatter and partisan talking heads, you might have noticed that the CBO back tracked on its orginal claims. Also, you would note that President Obama met with Congressional leaders to find more ways to cut costs. NPR reported this morning that according to many economists, the economy is actually showing signs of a rebound. Economists expect the economy to be better within 6 to 8 months. As far as health care goes, it is not being reported or explained that doing nothing will be a disaster for this country. For the Obama haters, hoping he fails is counterproductive, and for the media demanding ratings, reporting only the negative drives this country into the hands of those who have no plan.

40 years ago we sent a man to the moon. In doing so we worked together as a country because we knew it would be for our own good. Not everyone liked John Kennedy, but everyone rallied behind his space program in order to make the U.S. competitive with the Soviet Union.

We need to do the same now with health care.Only those with secure jobs and with health care they can afford are able to "poo poo" the need for health care reform. The majority of Americans need to band together to help get health care reform, for we need it to remain competitive with China and Japan and in most industries.

When did we, as Americans, start fighting against this country?
"  The CBO has now said that the Democratic proposals on health care will cause health care costs to RISE .. . ===============================================

Hey Frank - the CBO has not scored the final bill, or even all of the bills that are being considered, so it is not true to say that the CBO has DEFINITIVELY said that health care reform will make costs rise - that analysis was based on the incomplete measures that they have scored SO FAR.

Intersting that the $600 Billion dollar HELP bill on the Senate side was scored by the CBO as saving money and coming in well under $1 Trillion dollars, but nobody talks about that at all.

There are lots of bills on the table, pros and cons to each. If the Congress commits to WORKING on this, I am sure that they can come up with solutions. But complaining, fear mongering, and the hiding behind the status quo don't really help much.

P.S. The President doesn't have to hide anything about the budget, why should he? It's not like we don't already know things are bad. This type of cynical political analysis of everything is part of the reason it is so hard to get any work done in Washington - everyone always assumes the worst and plans accordingly.

Nashville (9:40 a.m.) ~ Not to mention that (1) people relying on emergency rooms for primary care is a big part of what drives up the costs for the rest of us in the first place; AND (2) hospitals all over the country are closing their emergency rooms so they no longer have to deal with the nasty indigents who use them that way.  It's nothing but a big Catch-22.  Whoever said that is wink-winking at kissing off those who cannot afford private health insurance.  They'd better hope THEIR jobs don't get eliminated any time soon, leaving them without coverage.
Hey FR. I don't know where you guys learned journalism or English but when referring to the Supreme Being in print it is ALWAYS capitalized. Example: God, Allah, the Supreme Being, Jehova etc.

In your haste to blab the latest please use proper print protocalls. It will make you look smarter.

If referring to an idol type god you may use the lower case as I have done in this sentence.
The Audacity of Hype "HCR: DOA"
--------------------------------------------

If so, then the usual rate of patients who are DOA due to lack of insurance or because their insurance was cancelled when they contracted a serious illness will continue. And that will be thanks to the Republicans and conservative Democrats whose only goal is to preserve the status quo for the insurance companies.

If the Republicans and the corporate media succeed in killing health care reform, things will continue as just as they have since Harry Truman first tried and failed to get universal coverage while the rest of the civilized world continues to go a totally different route.
I tuned into Meet The Press yesterday because This Week With George was preempted. I cannot understand why David Gregory is still the host of this show. He was a total bully with Kathleen Sebelius. He barely let her finish a sentence before interrupting her. Did you notice that when Mitch McConnell came on David allowed him to talk nonstop for at least 10 minutes. David did not interrupt McConnell. When are the producers of Meet The Press going to wise up and replace Gregory. Yesterday was the last time I will turn on Meet The Press. We need to put the pressure on NBC to do something.
then candidate barack obama campaigned on the idea of letting the bush tax cuts to the wealthy - $1.7 billion - expire. he was overwhelmingly elected by a majority of american voters who thought this the right thing to do. now, of course, when possibly high-end donors to future congressional  candidates might be in jeopardy, they "bulk" at the idea of taxing these same donors to pay for health care for all.

as usual, the politicians are more concerned about their re-election and continuing their power, prestige and money than doing the people's business.

it is obvious the good ol' gop's strategy of obstructing, watering down and just saying no, to then come back and say - geez, what you have done is not working yet - is right on target.

part of the problem may well be those criticizing president obama can not really believe how bad things were, how screwed up bush et. al left this country for president obama. this was a long time coming, exacerbated by 8 years of gop dominance, and we have experienced the perfect storm of "bills coming due."
So, Republicans, how do we get affordable health care without it costing us anything? You complain that we can't afford it. We all know that the status quo is unacceptable. Even top Republicans have said that. So what is the solution? Until you come up with a viable solution I will go with what the Democrats offer. At least they are trying something. Tax cuts for the rich is not the answer to every problem we face. Reduction of revenue at a time when we need revenue for two wars and a whole lot of very important things like health care doesn't solve any problem but makes things worse. So how do we do it Republicans, conservatives, neocons? How do we do it?
I see the Repuks have hires a new bunch of Moon walkers to slime this site with there hateful lies and distortions, all the rush repeaters. The sanford Meets God is a real hoot, the guys a rambling wack job, with his base of confused Christens, who think breaking all the laws set down by the Lord, and then when caught fall back into the arms of The Holier then the rest of us, the Right wing Bible bunch. The man needs way more help then he thinks he is going to get from above. There is a lot of Democrats, afraid to tell the truth, there are way to many tied to Healthcare money and now have to make a tough choice, either we vote to give Health care to those that need it the most,or keep sucking the dollars of health care industry,I hope those who have these money grubbers as there representative will call and tell them how you plan to vote next election.Time for the bought and paid for bunch to find new employers.
It's not surprising that the instant gratification society known as America hasn't got the patience to wait for President Obama and the Democrats to get the change we really need done.  Ofcourse the repugnant ones are the biggest whiners who expect that Barack can just wave his magic wand and fix all the screwups of Clueless George instantly.  All they want to do is play politics and not work for the greater good of the greater part of our citizenry.  It's the dopes of nope who wrecked our economy and health care in the first place who are trying to keep Barack and the Democrats from claning up their foul mess.

A great word trick with the verbal salute to Neil Armostrong's wise words when he first stepped on the moon 40 years ago today.  So sad that that was the last great accomplishment our country made but then what should we expect when repugnant ones ruled the White House for most of the time since then.  It's really sad that Walter Cronkite isn't here today to enjoy the monumental milestone.  His fascination with the space program was so infectious and it was a real joy to listen to him explain the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions.

One thing that's also sad on the passing of Walter Cronkite is that the media has forsaken his pledge to give us the news we need instead of the news we want.  Now ratings drive the news and news is now entertainment rather than rather than telling us what we need to know.  Car chases and funerals seem to fascinate the news media now rather than hard hitting journalism.  Now we have fox and freaks propaganda channel spewing forth outright lies as the antitesis of what Walter stood for in giving us the straight talk we needed.  He was so corrct to say that Liberals mnake the best newspeople because only Liberals are more interested in telling the truth rather than spew ideological lies.  When he came back from Vietnam after the Tet Offensive he made a personal observation that the war was never going to be better than a stalemate even though he broke the heart and career of fellow Democrat Lyndon Johnson.

Remember Walter Cronkite!
I agree with some aspects of Matt Bai's views such as this is the first president to be into technology and he uses those tools to reach people where they spend their time.  Most people have issues that interest them and follow those more closely; it's always been that way.  But I disagree that Obama's agenda is haphazard because he has priorities which he set and he is following those, the stimulus, energy and now health care.  Considering the economic and war mess inheritied, it was necessary to multi-task and focus on many issues simulataneuously.  As far as the August deadline, it may slip but Pres Obama was right to set the goal otherwise, Congress will bicker through eternity on the hard issues.

Like many others, watching Walter Cronkite's news was what we did every evening.  It was a sad day to hear of his death Friday.  He was a terrific journalist and anchor.

Sebelius is right to not say which aspects of the plan Pres Obama likes or does not like at least not on MTP or other news networks.  That's the quickest way to allienate Congress.  Speaking of MTP, I watched the Sebelius interview and then switched to CBS's Sunday Morning.  David Gregory asked some of the dumbest questions and the same ones that have been addressed previously--he does not do quality prep work nor does he analyze.  BTW, anyone else catch the accidental viewing of David Gregory brushing his hair Sunday morning ala shades of John Edwards.  It happened during the Today show.

Gov Sanford, Sen Ensign should both resign.  Their "I'm sorry, I made a mistake" is garbage.  As Leonard Pitt's editorial said, an affair is not a mistake, it was a conscious decision.  They demanded Pres Clinton resign and made a big issue of it.  Yes, these are personal, family problems but that could have been said of Clinton as well.  They both demanded a democrat be held accountable, they should demand the same of themselves.  Glad to see that mainstream media is picking up a bit of the "C" Street connection.  The more I hear of that religious group, the more you wonder about the GOP congressional members who live there and participate in this secret religious group; that group has some pretty scarey ideology and rules.

Polls are snapshots in time.  Of course health care approval is down because it reflects the cable and GOP chatter, negative that it can be done, negative on cost, negative on funding methods.  What have we been hearing for a couple weeks: it's bad, democrats on the Hill are spooked, it's expensive--all those things make people think it won't or can't be done and that reflects in the polls.  We are opinioned to death daily both pro and con.  Everything is discussed beyond reason.  Compare the health care reform to the nonstop Michael Jackson death coverage.  Sometimes it is best to shut it off, tune it out and go for a walk or work in the yard.  See ya later!
*** All Obama, all the time: On the first day of his seventh month in office, the Washington Post also front-pages that Obama is launching an all-out media blitz on health care.

As it should be. It seems to bother “some” people when he goes directly to the people. It is the best way to fight back against the opposition and after all, it is his presidency. Too many Presidents have sat in the White House after elections have been won and forgot about the people that elected them and the promises they made.

President Obama is definitely earning his money (it really isn’t enough). He is not an “out of sight, out of mind” president as many other have been. Keep looking in the face of America Mr. President and continue to fight for us.

*** Still personally popular, but less so on the issues: Six months in and one piece of conventional wisdom appears to be holding: Obama is personally more popular than his proposals.

The majority of those polled were "Independents" and I would call them, "uncertains". It boggles the mind. How can people disaprove of the president's policies, when the last administration had no policies, were lawless and lacked morales? It those that disaprove of his policies or the handeling of the economy, I'd like to know if they could have done better? If so....why didn't they run for the office.

It is easy to sit on the out side and complain...ins't it?
Mitch McConnell, On Meet The Press, when faced with facts about health care (US does not have the best in the world) he said “That that is only a couple of experts but if you ask the American people they will tell you that we have the best in the world”.
Like David Gregory showed – The only health care area that we are number 1 in is cost.

I would suggest that the American people have little experience with other systems to compare our health care with so they assume ours is the best (it used to be).
Most of us either don’t have the time or don’t make the effort to research the data available even though it is easier to access now than ever thanks to the internet.
The upcoming battle I am looking forward to: Al Queada and the Dems vs. CIA and the Republicans. A sure way to destroy the all dem government we have now is for the dems to ally themselves with Al Queada and be outraged that the previous administration wanted to kill terrorists. Way to go, Blame America First Party!
6 months in and this president is contradicting almost everything he ran on.  "Transparency"?  Yeah, right.  Does that include trying to "bury" the bad news which will come out in their mid-year budget review? Remember all his promises to be "up front with the american people"???? "New politics"--come on.  Does that include Obama having to use his personal popularity to drive through bad health care leglislation?  Does that mean over-using words like "urgent" and "crisis" to scare the public into backing his big government bills?  And to think this man accused Bush of using scare tactics.
6 months in and U.S. and Israel are still canceling diplomatic talks with one another?

Only 6 days left and Palin's is free to speak her mind and do what she pleases, free from politics.

Free to make speeches, speak her mind, write a book and, in general, piss off the liberal masses. Man, I hope Maureen Dowd is her first target. What a waste of good ink.
We desperately need health care reform.
How much longer are we going to allow  big business, lobbyists, special interests and those who support them run our country and make crucial decisions for us?? (Read where lobbyists doled out $1.4 million over the weekend) Will we continue to be quiet and allow those politicians who put finance campaigning, personal gains, interests and goals over the welfare of the American people?
We must stand up to politics as usual. Go to ussenators.com and email, call etc every senator you can. UShouseofrepresentatives.gov is limited as to who they allow to contact them but there are some you can get through to.
We must not let the politicians continue to rape the American people.
