First thoughts: Finding an enemy

*** Finding an enemy: You can mark yesterday as perhaps a key turning point in the fight over health-care reform. Why? Because President Obama and the White House found a political enemy in South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R), who earlier said that health care could be Obama’s “Waterloo” and could “break” him politically. Obama replied yesterday: “Think about that. This isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics. This is about a health-care system that is breaking America’s families.” As it turns out, Obama is much more comfortable when he has someone to run against. He hasn’t really had that … until now. Will Republicans regret turning this into a political fight? Polls, including yesterday’s Washington Post/ABC survey, show that the public trusts Obama more than Republicans on health care. And that means they’re more likely to side with the president in a political fight, even if they aren’t convinced his plan is the right one.

Video: The Washington Post's Eugene Robinson debates with a Morning Joe panel whether the Obama administration needs to take a more reasonable approach to achieving health care reform.

*** Risk vs. reward: Of course, Republicans would have drawn criticism had they not attempted to seize this political opportunity. So the GOP strategy of turning this into a political fight was something they had to attempt, because the reward is great (see DeMint's prediction). But it may have given the president a lifeline -- just as he was showing a growing frustration with members of HIS OWN party. But, suddenly, the president looks much more comfortable when back to campaign mode, running against Republicans.

*** Playing into Obama’s hands? Honest question: Is this “Will it pass or won’t it?” drama on health care actually playing right into Obama’s hands? Truth is, with the Democrats at 60 in the Senate and with a very strong majority in the House, they are -- more than likely -- going to be able to pass health care, especially when you have Senate Republicans like Chuck Grassley and Olympia Snowe who still apparently want to play ball. As a result, any victory Obama gets on health care is going to look more significant. Then again, he’s got to achieve that victory first, and that’s why he’s meeting today with House Democrats on Energy and Commerce Committee, to get them to pass the House bill.

Video: Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., talks about the large group of moderate senators who share President Obama's goal to fix health care this year, but disagree with his timetable.

*** Seizing the bully pulpit: Another day, another example of President Obama seizing the bully pulpit to press for health-care reform. At 1:05 pm ET (before meeting with those House Democrats), he once again delivers brief remarks on the subject from the White House -- the eighth day in the last nine in which he spoken on health care (in some form or fashion) since returning from his recent overseas trip. Yet another example was his interview with NBC’s Meredith Vieira on TODAY. On why he set an August deadline to get health-care bills passed through the House and Senate: “Well, because if you don't set a deadline in this town, nothing happens. You know, the default in Washington is inaction and inertia. And there's a reason why we haven't had health-care reform in 50 years.” But in a separate interview with PBS, Obama did admit that the deadline could “spill over.” He said, “You've been around here long enough to know that you have to say, ‘Get this done.’ If somebody comes to me and says, ‘It's basically done; it's going to spill over by a few days or a week,’ you know, that's different.”

*** The Great American Health Care Fight: Other health-care developments: It looks like the surtax on high-income earners is more on life support than Republicans wish, because it was turning into an easy thing to attack Democrats over… The U.S. Chamber of Commerce holds a conference call with reporters at 2:00 pm ET today to announce a multi-million-dollar ad campaign to protect “employer-sponsored health care”…  Obama held a conference call with liberal bloggers last night… Has Obama lost David Brooks? The White House's favorite non-liberal columnist unloads on House Dem "old bulls" … And everyone is waiting to see if today’s the day that the Senate Finance Committee releases its health-care bill.

*** Birth(ers) of a Nation: Remember that McCain event last year during the presidential campaign, when a woman asked if Barack Obama was an Arab? Well, that’s nothing compared to YouTube clip of a Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) town hall, in which a woman carries on and on about Obama's citizenship and birth certificate. Let's get something straight: If Obama weren't a United States citizen, don't you think the Clinton campaign (first) or the McCain camp (second) would have said something during the two-year-long presidential campaign? (In fact, McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone, was the one who had the bigger potential legal question mark about his eligibility for the presidency.) But the real story in all of this is that Republican Party has a HUGE problem with its base right now. That some Republicans believe a man who won last year’s presidential contest by seven percentage points is not the legitimate president is a base problem much bigger than Cindy Sheehan anti-war protestors or black helicopter conspiracy theorists who flock to some Ron Paul events. Check out how flummoxed Castle looked. How many other Republican elected officials are dealing with questioners like this woman? Meanwhile, did Lou Dobbs really GO THERE? Seriously? This is getting absurd.

*** Mr. Unpopular: Here’s more evidence that simply BEING a governor is an unpopular job these days, per a new Quinnipiac poll: "Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell's job approval rating has shrunk to its lowest level ever, 39 - 53 percent negative, and voters see him as most responsible for the state's budget mess.” What has Rendell done wrong other than be chief executive of a state running out of money. You can write this storyline about some 35 of the 50 governors. By the way, California struck a budget deal… FINALLY. It's ugly for all involved.

*** Sotomayor news: At 10:00 am ET, the Senate Judiciary Committee will gather to consider Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination, and some members will hold a stakeout afterward. It's expected that Republicans will move to delay a committee vote on her nomination until next week. That said, the full Senate vote is still on target before the chamber departs for its August recess. Meanwhile, has Sotomayor become a campaign wedge issue for some Republicans seeking re-election in 2010? If so, keep tabs on Richard Burr's vote. The normally down-the-line conservative from a swing state is undecided.

*** Elsewhere today: Vice President Biden

is in Ukraine and Georgia through Friday… Secretary of State Clinton is in Bangkok, where she meets with the Thai prime minister… Fed Chair Ben Bernanke testifies at 10:00 am ET before House Financial Services (Bernanke is getting more political grief from BOTH sides of Pennsylvania Ave, by the way) … TARP Special Inspector General Neil Barofsky testifies on his TARP report before House Oversight and Government Reform at 10:00 am… And Chu on this: Energy Secretary Steven Chu appears tonight on “The Daily Show,” and he also launches Facebook and YouTube to discuss energy and climate change.

*** Two steppin' with the Obamas: Finally, the White House will host a country music celebration tonight, with country acts like Brad Paisley, Alison Krauss, and Charley Pride.

Yesterday I pulled a paragraph from “Renegade” making the point that in the fourth quarter, with minutes to play, Obama says “Gimme the ball”.  Richard Wolffe also addresses President Obama’s competitive nature.  When the stakes are highest, Obama is at his best.  The stakes are pretty high right now, so Obama is now playing point guard.

I see a couple of things happening: 1) bloggers are out there contacting their congressmen and women.  That does make a difference.  2) The opposition is now reduced to 8 to 10 Democrat and Republican Senators.  It is much easier for Obama to focus on/negotiate with individuals than right-wing media ads. Individual work will be done behind closed doors.

It was fun to watch Obama push back on Kansas Republican Senator Jim Dim Witt (DeMint).  It is becoming very clear that the right wing is scared of Obama and do not have a clue how to compete.

Cursory Analysis:  Right-wing thinking

They don’t want to talk about the captured American soldier, torture, illegal wire-tapping, and Constitutional violations occurring during the Bush/Cheney administration.

Their favorite topics are “Socialism” and “Race”   Michael Steele, Glen Beck, et. al. love to accuse Obama as promoting socialism, especially now with regard to healthcare.  What they miss is that these attack words have little impact for the majority of Americans.  What they do not understand is that Americans want healthcare reform, including a public option.

Pat Buchanan is the right-wing poster child for being a racist.  Last night Rachel Maddow made some follow-up comments regarding her interview with Pat.  In other words, using facts she sliced and diced him as if making a toss salad.  My question is, “Why hasn’t someone challenged Pat with facts for the past 10 years…and why is he still on MSNBC’s payroll.

First Read: The $1 trillion figure Democrats want reporters to use leaves out major pieces of the bill — notably a $245 billion provision intended to prevent a scheduled cut to doctors’ pay under Medicare. Democrats have conveniently decided to exempt that provision from their pay-as-you-go budget rule."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
So the Democrats are beyond the hand waving and smoke blowing stage, and have gone right to the lying through their yellowed teeth stage.
In a roughly 25-minute session with a handful of prominent progressive bloggers, the president also asked for help combating disinformation about his health care plan.

"I know the blogs are best at debunking myths that can slip through a lot of the traditional media outlets," he said. "And that is why you are going to play such an important role in our success in the weeks to come."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m happy to oblige Mr. President!
We got your back! Fellow lefties NOW more than ever we MUST remain VIGILANT!
Keep up the good fight!
The right wing propaganda machine is in full marching mode BUT will ultimately be defeated!  It’s a new day in America and the party of fear & smear can continue on with their ‘one trick pony’ show!
Rational thinking Americans are no longer buying tickets!
In the not to distant future… the GEENOPEE will be folding up their tent and trading it in for a double wide which should accommodate the “base’ rather nicely!
Let’s get it done!
Oh and… on a side note… here I thought Dick Cheney was such a ‘tough’ guy… nope not the case… he whining (and was granted) for an additional 6 months of secret service detail (on the taxpayers dime no less) cause the poor guy is scared for his personal safety! You mean his darling daughter can’t protect daddy dearest?
It’s bad enough I’m paying for his heart condition… and now I’m paying to make sure his paranoia doesn’t get the better of him!
The ONLY thing I want to be paying for this guy is an orange jumpsuit 3 squares and a cot!
I would like to start this morning off by saying hat’s off! To Rachel Maddow. Her show was excellent as usual. However on last night’s show, she came back with a follow-up to enlighten, correct and add fact, verses the fiction of Pat Buchanan’s racist rants from the Thursday night show.
I appreciate you Rachel Maddow. Many time words of racial hatred have been spoken without regard of the feelings of those that they’ve been inflicted on; and without thought of the sensivity of the people that they were directed at. Through out the election I’ve watched, listened and was absolutely angered by those words, yet no one offered a retracion, apology or even borthered to set the record stright.
Many people and nationalities have toiled over the years to help build and form this great nation of ours, the credit or privilege doesn’t belong to a singel race of people but to various nationalities that came to this country either my choice or force that worked to build and contribute to our nation’s hertiage.
With pride of ownership not deserving to those that are imigrants themselves, but to all of the masses. Pat Buchanan’s generation of the Jim Crow South is a dieing breed that are fearful of the change for equality of people, that “should be inclusive in the Democratic process” that has been to long ingnored and denied the right to participate in a fair and just system of governing.
The founding fathers of the “colonies” had family ties to England, they’re family histories weren’t rooted and grounded on the soil of America. A history lesson would be a great place for him  to start, or any of those that wish to challenge some else’s rights in  this great nation of ours.
To those people that wish to challenge the birth right of our president need to look deeper as well and trace their family trees. They would be surprised to find out that they have no right to challenge his. America is the “great melting pot” of all races and nationalities and fair representation should be a right and not a privilege and thank God it is finally happening.
Change is a bitter pill to swallow for those people, but swallow it they must. The unblanced scale of justice train has left the station. Those that were left behind may as well hitchhike or stay where they are…because this country will move forward with, or without them reagrdless of their lop sided views and opinions.
There are more of us that prefer it going forward, verses those that want it to remain the same With much appreciation to you Rachel…I bid you all a good day.
The president doesn't need a single Republican vote to pass this.  Not one.  If health care fails to pass, he can hardly blame Republicans.
But will the media wake up and realize that?  Of course not.
>>> Because President Obama and the White House found a political enemy in South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R), who earlier said that health care could be Obama’s “Waterloo” and could “break” him politically. Obama replied yesterday: “Think about that. This isn’t about me. <<
Oh it's very much about Obama. Guy can't get his mug on tv enough. It is all about Obama, 24/7/365.
“Think about that. This isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics. This is about a health-care system that is breaking America’s families.”
-----------------------------------------------------
In repulican there is only "I"
In democrat there is "team"
Becoming more and more apparent everyday.
So why does Obama care so much about getting an "enemy"? Other then the fact it gives him something to whine about now that his health care plan has gone down in flames. Remember, Obama has a filibuster proof majority in the Senate and a 77 vote advantage in the House, and still he cannot pass any of his big ticket legislation. Looks like the enemy in fact is his own party. Too bad, so sad for the socialist Obama.
They said even God couldn'r sink the Titanic.
What, no Palin story? You guys are slipping.
I thought Obama said health care reform "wasn't about him". Apparently FR thinks it is though, else why do you the phrase "he’s got to achieve that victory first"?
And it would be a victory for Obama. But it would be a tragedy for the people of the country.
You know, First Read, sometimes I wonder if you folks live on the same planet with the rest of us.
President Obama hasn't had an enemy on healthcare until now?
Seriously?
Well then who on earth is it that is spending the 1.5 million dollars A DAY to defeat healthcare, his friends?
Who is it that keeps spreading all this misinformation that the media swallows whole without challenge?
And as far as the President "finding" an enemy, seems to me that Senator Demint found him, no?
Much like the mythical "honeymoon" that President Obama never got, there has NEVER been a time when President Obama has not had enemies, loud and VOCAL enemies, spreading demonstrable lies 24/7.
He has no need to "create enemies" as a political ploy.
More cynical analysis from inside the Washington bubble.
P.S. President Obama will not "lose" no matter how health care reform turns out. Why?
Because he is doing everything that is humanly possible to bring about this much delayed change.
If it doesn't go through, the losers will once again be the American people, not the President.
When will the media (and the Republican party) realize that everything is not a parlor game to be played for your enjoyment?
Last time I looked it was Sanford, ensign and the C street Band that thought they were God. Its funny how the GOP has made this a personal thing while Obama is trying to fix our health care and Economy.
The Repubs want Obama to fail-they said that from day one. And they knew Health care would be just about impossible to get, because Bush & his fellow repubs left this country bancrupt. Repubs couldn't care less about the middle-class people struggling to pay their health costs, they only care about themselves.
VP Biden is in Ukraine and Georgia today.
He's there to screw up another line so the world can once again see the man for the idiot he really is.
"We must spend money to avoid going bankrupt."
"We mis-read the state of the economy."
I'm waiting for the 2010 Biden Bonehead Calendar.
Thank you Sen. DeMint, for your stupid statement about Healthcare reform being Prez Obama's Waterloo. Anything coming from the Obstructionist Party gives the President increasing credibility and DeMint's statments prove this is all about politics and has nothing to do with what the American people need. Everything the Rethugs do is all about the Republican party, and injuring President Obama personally.
It's not coincidental that all those that vehemently went after the President, either before the election or after it, has now faced astronomical political fallout. Billary had their troubles, Jon Corzine, Sarah Palin, John McCain, Mark Sanford, and now Ed Rendell. Don't mess with this President, Mr. DeMint, you will regret it.
So, now it is the fault of the politician who is asked a question, if the question is deemed idiotic?  Really, guys, I get that you want to keep your Obama decoder pins, but this is a stretch even for you.
As to healthcare, it is clear that the public does not want Obamacare, and is rejecting it out of hand.  Obama knows this, but does not care.  The Democrats are responsible for passing the disaster of a stimulus package-if they pass this, after cap and trade, they have got to be insane.
Interesting article by the AP about withholding the economic report until late August-it is made very clear that this is a tactic by the administration to keep the bad news away from the public, and congress, in an attempt to manipulate them into passing this unpopular health care plan, which would not even begin to cover people until AFTER the 2012 elections!  The first thing that gets set up is the Healthcare czar, with a board of people who decide who and what gets covered.  Great idea-Obama won't have to tell your grandmother that she isn't entitled to heart bypass surgery until AFTER the election.
By the way, the Mayo clinic has weighed in on the proposal-they don't like it.  They say it won't work, will deny care for patients, and make the situation worse than it is today.  I guess they don't know anything about health care, right, Obama worshippers?
The Mayo Clinic on Monday issued a startling rebuke to the Obama administration coming down strongly against the healthcare reform proposal offered by House Democrats last week. Read more: Mayo Clinic calls House plan bad medicine
And MSNBC says - NOTHING
Great "news" reporting by the BoBo Berry Drinking Cheerleaders!!!
Obie:
Your
    numbers
            are
                going
                      down ... big time.
Well, now were back to the $1.6 trillion dollar price tag again. Just can't seem to get away from that number. The number has to be that large so that it covers illegal aliens and the fact that there is zero tort reform in the bill. And it's still using Obama/Pelosi numbers, not CBO numbers, which project the costs to be much higher.
So read it and weap liberals - you're not getting your free health care anytime soon.
Geez another idiot from South Carolina.  Jim Demented is showing that he isn't interested in helping the people just playing petty partisan politics.  In inferring that Health Care Reform may be Obama's Waterloo the Demented One has forgotten that Obama could be in the role of Wellington who won that battle. Obama was correct to point out how petty and partisan the Demented One is about playing politics instead of working for the American people.
Rachel Maddow is doing a great job of exposing that creepy secretive C Street church of sinners for what it is.  Time for the government to investigate this false church of repugnant one sinners and cancel the church's tax exempt status.
I was really disguisted seeing that some clueless woman was at some repugnant ones rally and she was whining about Obama's birth certificate.  Nothing is more disgusting than seeing how ignorant these Birthers are as they defy reality.  I got a big laugh at how anguished she was about taking back her government, hey now she knows how we felt 8 years ago when Cluess George had Katherine Harris and the Supreme Court steal the election for him.  As you repugnant ones said to us back then "Get Over It"!
Obama is Wellington and Wins his Waterloo!
To those that complain about taxing the rich to pay for social programs:
[The tax rate is 37% for the well-to-do. But what do they really pay? Federal tax codes have been engineered to give the rich an advantage.
In 2007, Warren Buffet slammed a system that allows the very rich to pay taxes at a lower rate than the middle class. Buffet revealed that he paid 17.7% in taxes while his receptionist was taxed at 30%.]
The tax codes need to be fixed. In the meantime maybe there should be less talk about how unfair taxes are for the rich since many are paying a smaller percent than you.
to ron in indiana: we too saw the rachel maddow segment challenging buchanan on "facts." unlike others at msnbc, ms. maddow took the words and example of walter chronkite to heart and educated her viewers with the true facts. it was a stunning segment for what it said about ms. maddow as well as journalism; guess a ph.d in political science from an extremely intelligent woman is what it takes these days!
If I'm not mistaken, some of the talk coming out of republicans these days seems to be AT LEAST skirting the edges of what I understand to be sedition, not to mention some of it also seems to be making threats against the President himself ... where is the media on this?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Fortunate Son ~ God doesn't have time to micromanage petty little stuff like politics.  He's busy making Jesus appear on toast and Michael Jackson on the hoods of cars.
When will aholes like demint get real? they quack about national healthcare, socialism and waterloos but the little socialists never drop their own great taxpayer funded heathcare for the real world coverage that they keep talking about.
The same goes for any socialist on taxpayer medicare, tricar or any other care that would deny the res tof us a piece of their deal...when are you going to leave those plans and buy insurance in the real world you keep talking about? hmmmmmmmmmm?
and why is it that the most ignorant and clueless seem to hail from SC?
Wake Up America! $23.7 TRILLION to Fix Our Financial System?!
"The total potential federal government support could reach up to $23.7 trillion," says Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, in a new report obtained Monday by ABC News on the government's efforts to fix the financial system.Yes, $23.7 trillion.
Just another record for Obama to break!!!
Highest Deficit in the history of life
Highest Debt in the history of life
This is what happens when you give a liberal leftist wacko a blank checkbook.
Get ready - the taxman comes
Obama's Healthcare plan is simple...
Ready...
Fire...
Aim...
I think Obama is being dishonest again.  Does anyone actually believe him when he says "This isn't about me."  It's ALWAYS about him!  All Obama, all the time.  He craves celebrity status.  Strong-arms people when they don't agree with him.  Loves the campaign - that's all he knows.
Rachel, last evening, was steady and factual in her delivery of facts to controvert the bigotry of Buchanan.  Well done Rachel!
Hatred and bigotry are a mind set, an attitude, that is fueled by lies and ignorance. Buchanan is consumed with bigotry.
Thank you Rachel.  Truth shall win over lies!
BTW..David Gregory on MTP has got to go, replace him now with Lawrence O'!
Look, something has to be done about health care in this country.  More and more people are using the ER for primary care, since they can't afford preventative care.  When the hospitals can't recoup the money owed, it puts them in jeopardy too.  By the time people get to the ER, they are far more sick, and it becomes more expensive.  The crisis in health care isn't in lawsuits, it is in people not being able to pay for the care they require.  Everyone's costs go up, small businesses pay higher rates for insurance, more of that payment is turned over to families to cover.  It is ridiculous that ONE person in this country is not covered, that kids leaving college are without insurance, that the unemployed lose coverage.  Maybe some of you won't get this until you are caught in the no insurance trap.
I am struck today by the complete lack of foresight by so many in the party of “No”.  It is, as I said this weekend, like they are shooting themselves in both feet with their last bullets.  President Obama was elected by huge majorities in a number of highly populated areas to resolve Healthcare in America.  This isn’t a situation that just occurred since January 20th.  The system has been broken for decades.  The populace, the momentum and the need are all on Obama’s side.
I don’t think anyone doubts that the minority party has the capacity to whine and complain, loud and long.  I think what is at question here is their ability to interpret data and use sound reasoning to reach a conclusion that supports their complaints.  I think the panel of MSNBC shows last night (and Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert) did an excellent job of highlighting just how limiting the behaviors are toward moving the dialogue forward.
Do I even need to say anything about Michael Steele?  What a complete and utter moron.  Is anyone on the right proud of him?  I love the way Rachel addressed Pat Buchanan’s complete meltdown of fact and reason, too.  All I can say is, it is a REALLY good time to be a DEM.
Chris Dorr and Ron Indiana – thanks for the shout.  I do what I can.
Sample Letter sent to various Blue Dogs:
Dear Senator:
I am struck by the continuation of stalemate politics in Washington.  The American People voted overwhelmingly for CHANGE and yet you all seem confined and destined to continue to repeat the same tired cycles of yesteryear.  Healthcare reform is a MUST.  Our citizens, our economy and our values demand that we address this issue with compassion, reason and a heightened sense of urgency.  I implore you to do your part, at this historic time, and VOTE with your constituents.  Pass Healthcare Reform WITH a Public Option.  Americans deserve the same OPTIONS that our elected officials have so generously provided for themselves.  We are watching, we are paying attention and we are keeping score.
Sincerely,
First Read,
Isn't it interesting that for years the right wing of this country has been allowed to sow all types of scurrilous  and demonstrable lies about anyone they chose, without any challenge from the "mainstream" media , and now all of a sudden you are suprised when we reap a bumper crop of looney tunes who can't be reasoned with after years of programming?
When you don't base your thinking on FACTS but rely on others to tell you what to think, what else do you expect?
That is the legacy of our "newstainment" culture - a dumbed down, fearful, and cowering electorate.
But hey, at least the right wing propaganda machine creates jobs, right?
Isn't it ironic that we have more news channels than ever and get less actual news than Walter Cronkite used to do once a day in 30 minutes?
Polls, including yesterday’s Washington Post/ABC survey, show that the public trusts Obama more than Republicans on health care.
-----------
Polls, polls, and more polls. Simple numbers for simple people.
Recall that the Washington Post was trying to sell access to the Obama administration so lobbying groups could go "shoulder-to-shoulder" with the "highest ranking officials in the Obama administration". Think about that. The Washington Post was selling access to the Obama administration, so lobbyists got to have their say to Obama's people, the Post got to make some serious cash, but what did the Obama administration get out of this? Easy answer, favorable press coverage by the Washington Post.
So maybe it's time to consider the source of a poll before you give that poll any credibility.
The absolute best thing for Republicans to do is keep their mouths shut.
Instead, they have so demonized Obama and his health care plan as to lose public support and give the president an easy target to blame and attack.
Waste my tax money on BAILING OUT BANKS Waste my tax money on HALLIBURTON waste my tax money on Iraq war (TRILLIONS) waste my money on tax breaks for the rich waste my tax money on giving my representitives better health care than the rest of us BUT PLEASE dont waste it on the people,THE PEOPLE are money wasting losers HEALTCARE,ROADS,HOUSING,FOOD for POOR KIDS nahhh make sure we give it to the iraq goverment to fix thier roads give people thier healthcare and fix thier houses we bombed WORKS OUT GOOD if you have a house job healthcare and money in the bank like reporters and TV personelities all who have healthcare tell the common guy he dont need no help. REPUBLICANS SUCK DEMS SUCK cant trust anyone who makes a profit in public life.
Finding an enemy: You can mark yesterday as perhaps a key turning point in the fight over health-care reform. Why? Because President Obama and the White House found a political enemy in South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R), who earlier said that health care could be Obama’s “Waterloo” and could “break” him politically.
------------
This statement is evidence of the stupidy that is apart of of democratic process that needs exterminating. What a hell of a thing to say from one of our elected officials. Failure of our President, means failure for this nation. Why are people like him that make such inflamatory remarks allow to continue to serve the public? Is this treason or what? These are the people that are allowed to "Vote" on what's "right" for our nation? He is DEMENTED.
*** Risk vs. reward: Of course, Republicans would have drawn criticism had they not attempted to seize this political opportunity.
---------------------------
Open wide and insert foot. Hello republicans, the American public are already aware that you people are attempting to pull a coo on HCR. We already know what your political stakes and vested interest are. Failure with the passage of this bill will be your "Waterloo".
*** The Great American Health Care Fight:
Oh please, cut the crap. We are aware that the number's will change, that what happens with  "proposals and business plans". You would think that these people were asked to go to the cross of Crucifixion rather than pass HCR. News flash! It is not our problem that you people took money from the insurance companies to finance your campaigns and look out for their best interest. Give them a REFUND, but get it done.
FR Headlines: Finding an Enemy, Risk vs reward, Playing into Obama's hands
Boy, you guys sure are getting carried away with some of this political stuff.  The core issue is that the current congressional bills do not bend the cost curve downward, but rather according to CBO the actually bend the curve upwards.  And as long as that is the case HCR is DOA and all the bloviating about waterloo or playing into Obama's hands is just an amusing political sideshow.
Until HCR includes credible cost control, then Obamacare risks being labled as a reckless experiment with the American health care system that will lead to fiscal ruination.  That is a killer argument that can resonate among reasonable folks throughout the country.  Game, set, match.
I would argue that the dip in numbers has to do with the fact that the plan is swinging further to the right.  People do not like the idea that mandatory insurance is the focus...and cost cutting and efficient means has become less of a component.  We need Healthcare to be be determined by needs, not earnings and share prices.
Swing to the right? Well, I guess it couldn't swing any further to the left.
I guess health care reform becomes less and less popular when more and more people are asked to pay for it.
It's good to see Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton out and about on the international scene repairing the damage to our reputation from the bushwhacker and his mischievous band of supporters.
The El Nino is Coming, the El Nino is Coming!  It's good to hear that the El Nino is forming up on the coast of Peru again as it means more winter rain for our state that has not seen enough rain for too many years.  One problem our state has is that too much agricultural land is not being farmed this year and that has hurt our state's economy and budget.  Ofcourse the downside is with more winter rains we'll experience more mudslides but we can put up with having Highway 1 cut to Big Sur for a few months if it means more farmland being put into production next summer.
The party of sore losers is still trying to woo their white supremacist supporters by tryiung to delay Sotomayors confirmation by every underhanded trick possible.  Time to just vote on her confirmation and get that business behind us, another victory for Obama and the Democrats.
 Here in Virginia, a prominent African American businesswoman who contributed $600,000 to Tim Kaine has endorsed Republican Bob McDonnell for Governor.  How about that?!
Ron, DimWit is a South Carolina senator (Lindsay Graham is their other 'fortunate son')- Kansas has their share of idiots (Brownback and Roberts); but they aren't the ones showing a public meltdown.
PS.  Write the senators here:
Mark Murray: "Of course, Republicans would have drawn criticism had they not attempted to seize this political opportunity. So the GOP strategy of turning this into a political fight was something they had to attempt, because the reward is great (see DeMint's prediction)."
I find it unbelievable that a supposed jourhnalist would condone DeMint's vicious, unpatriotic talk about blocking health care reform to "break" the President of the United States. You do a disservice not only to the instintution of the presidency, but to the ordinary people who will be "broken" by crushing health care costs if the Republicans are successful in maintaining the profitable status quo for their clients in the health care industry.
Not everything should be reduced to a cheap political game the way First Read does by knee-jerk reaction. And your double standard is showing again. Certainly, if a Democratic senator had gleefully talkied about "breaking" Bush during his disastrous presidency, the squeals of outraged super-patriotism from the likes of David Broder and other celebreties of the punditocracy would have been deafening.
One comment Glenn Greenwald made in a recent Salon article about Walter Cronkite that won't get quoted much is that Cronkite said his greatest professional regret was that he failed to pass his professional values down to the next generation of journalists. Cronkite's failure gets proven all the time around here.
Way to go Rethuglicans! Talk about foot in mouth. How sad and pathetic that the only thing they got going these these fools is subtefuge, obstuctionism and doing everything they can do create this so-called waterloo for Obama. DeMint needs to stop this high school rivalry mentally along w/ the other hypocrits GOP who seems to relish this us v them, we are better then them, more moral (NOT), and we put country first. Thanks Sanford and now Demint for being the incompentent morons that just allows Obama to serve your brainless head on a platter.
We need a New Poll Please People:
Jobs   ..or...
Health Care?
No Brainer...Please,... our health want matter if we can't work to feed and cloth ourselves...
Please Mr. President put American's to work and you won't be disappointed in those results...
Depression causes more than loss of hope...
according to the polls it looks like Obama has more support then the media is portraying. http://sensico.wordpress.com/2009/07/21/poll-mixed-news-for-obama-nothing-new-for-republicans/
Most Americans wants health care reform, period.  I'm glad he targeted DeMint because that guy is only looking out for himself and not trying to achieve much other that boost his profile with far right extremists
Forunate Son talks about that Obama was the chosen one. New Flash! The religious theocrats/fanatics and you seem to be one of them were convinced that Bush was the chosen one?
Houston - I find it unbelievable that a supposed jourhnalist would condone DeMint's vicious, unpatriotic talk about blocking health care reform to "break" the President of the United States.
What's so patriotic about socialized health care? And you never heard of hardball politics? How naive are you?
What's the point of delaying Sotomayor vote? It seems like both parties always do this. But the republicans have no plans to filibuster her, she's expected to pass with plenty of votes to spare, and it's not like there are any cases she'll get to rule on she wouldn't have otherwise if she's apointed a week earlier.
Even if it were just to be petty it doesn't really make any sense, since delaying or not delaying the vote gains or loses you nothing politically. It just seems to be the default position to delay for no reason.
Geez how can you at First Read be surprised at anywhere that Lou Slobs goes?  This conservative nutcase has no moral compass and a total disregard for the truth.  I'm sure that Walter Cronkite never bothered to listen to this hateful racist windbag.
The Birthers shows us just how ignorant the base of the repugnant ones party is.  Get Over It limpwristed conservative crybabies, we Democrats won the last election and now it's time for us to govern wisely where you fools of faith governed cluelessly.  Now that we have won back our government it's time for you clowns to get in, sit down and shut up.  I saw a hilarious political cartoon yesterdsay where Obama is the driver and he has a passenger next to him constantly saying "Are We There Yet".  The repugnant ones had better get used to being backseat drivers who will be ignored as little children.
I can't wait to see President Obama give his primetime address.  It's good that he's gotten more vocal and tougher with the dopes of nope.  Time to show the party of sore losers just how we appreciated it when Tyrants Bush and Cheney bullied Congress into doing really stupid stuff.  You know what they say about payback.
Saw the clip on Maddow last night.  Shows just how far gone the right has gotten on this issue.  I wonder if they'd feel the same if Obama was a Republican?  Or if he was a White person who happened to have parentage in, say, Hungary.  I seem to recall a small brief movement to have the Constitution changed so that Arnold Swartzenegger (sp?) could run for President (of course now he couldn't run for dog-catcher).
Just sayin'
BTW.  Nice rebuttal on Maddow last night on Pat Buchanon's racist tirade.  I still think it's time MSNBC put him out to pasture.  He's clearly a racist who doesn't deserve a platform to spread his hate.  By giving him that platform, MSNBC is just as implicit in that racism as FOX is with Bill O'Reily.
It kind of reminds me of the Road Runner cartoons where Wile E Coyote tries to catch the road runner with all sorts of devices. The Republicans are trying to catch Obama and he outsmarts them at every turn. De Mint is ordering from ACME and Gingrich is about to go off the cliff. Meanwhile Obama simply looks at them, says "beep beep" and continues his run.
