First thoughts: Another tough week

*** Another tough week: It's been another relatively tough week for President Obama. His poll numbers, while still hanging in there, have declined. The Senate now won't meet his deadline to get a health-care bill passed by August. And Wednesday’s press conference on health care turned into a controversy over race -- hardly its goal for that evening. Remember when we wrote about how smart the White House has been about multi-tasking, forcing the GOP to aim its fire at several moving targets? Well, guess what: It isn’t doing that right now; it’s focusing on just one issue: health care. And that has allowed the political opposition and the media to zero in on that one issue. The White House’s "clear the decks" mentality is the opposite of what Team Obama bragged about when it came to focusing on more than one big issue at a time. And they are paying a steep political price for it.

Video: Rep John Price, R-Ga., and Rep. David Camp, R-Mich., talk about the proposed government take over on health care and alternative options for changing the 'status quo.'

*** Unity isn’t easy under a big tent: Given the news that the Senate won’t vote on a bill until after the August recess, today's big pundit debate question on health care is: Why did Obama impose a deadline? The president gave his answer in Ohio yesterday, “If there's not a deadline in Washington, nothing happens… I just want people to keep on working.” Still, missing the deadline only underscores the difficulty for this new, big-tent Democratic Party to achieve unity. That includes everyone from Bernie Sanders to Arlen Specter in the Senate, and from Pete Stark and Mike Ross in the House. In fact, it wasn't lost on some of us yesterday that Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was on the Hill either begging Blue Dogs or cracking heads -- or both -- to climb aboard with the president. This is the same Emanuel who recruited some of these Blue Dogs to run in these tough districts back in 2005 and 2006, promising them he'd be looking out for their politics, while promoting the idea to reporters that he was finding candidates that "fit their districts."

*** Rahm on the GOP: Speaking of Rahm, don’t miss his comments on health care and politics to NPR this morning. “I'm OK with politics, as you well know. You know, today Senator Inhofe, I don't have the exact quote, but basically the thrust of the quote was the political importance of defeating this because of what it would do to President Obama. They're seeing it in political terms, and they've decided that if they can beat the president on health care reform, they've scored a big political victory. But what they've also guaranteed in policy terms is that you have the status quo. I actually appreciate what Senator DeMint said and Senator Inhofe. I'm different than everybody, I'm not going to criticize them. I compliment them. They’re honest.” The White House needs to have the GOP as its opponent right now, not each other, which is why you'll continue to hear the White House invoke DeMint and Inhofe. But can they convince conservative Democrats that a legislative defeat for the president will end up being a reflection on the whole party?

Video: Speaking at a town-hall style meeting in Shaker Heights, Ohio, President Obama says that he wants health care reform "done by the fall."

*** The bottom line on health care: It's still hard to imagine a scenario where Obama doesn't sign something he calls health-care reform by the end of the year. But this is coming -- at least right now -- at a painful political cost. It could mean future congressional fights become even harder. Or worse, it could become a political nightmare for the administration and they see members lose in 2010. Then again, as Ron Brownstein writes, congressional Democrats could bet on Obama.

*** More green shoots? There has been one piece of good news for the White House and for its long-term fortunes: the economy. As the Washington Post front-pages, “Companies that a few months ago were too fearful even to project their future earnings are now seeing glimmers of hope in the year ahead. The rate of home sales has risen for three straight months. And the number of people drawing unemployment insurance benefits has fallen back to April levels, having receded for the third straight week.” All of that news led the Dow to its highest level since January. In his National Journal column, Charlie Cook wonders whether it’s wise for Obama to delay his health-care push until there’s even more good economic news -- which might make voters more comfortable with new spending. “Waiting is not a great option for the Democrats, but it may be better than losing one or both of Obama’s signature proposals or passing legislation that could trigger a disaster for their party in next year’s midterm elections.”

*** On Gates/Cambridge: There's an uncomfortable joke at the White House right now: "Thank God for the Henry Louis Gates Jr. story, because it steps on the really bad health care day the president had Thursday." Still, Obama does seem annoyed that this became such a big story, but that's where things are these days on the issue of race. The White House should be thankful for one thing: Sgt. Crowley has not really been a political antagonist. And Republicans, besides a couple of small attempts yesterday, have stayed pretty much out of it.

Video: President Barack Obama's comments on the Gates incident overshadowed his message on health care reform at a crucial moment. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

*** On to education: Perhaps recognizing that it has been TOO focused on health care, Obama gives a speech on another topic -- education -- at 1:15 pm ET. But he will still meet behind closed doors at the White House with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus at 11:30 am.

*** Happy trails to you, until we meet again: Sunday is Sarah Palin’s last day as Alaska governor. Her exit comes as a brand-new Washington Post/ABC poll shows her fav/unfav to be 40%-53%, her lowest rating in that survey. What’s more, nearly six in 10 (57%) say she does not understand complex issues. According to NBC’s Norah O’Donnell and Adam Verdugo, Palin officially becomes a private citizen at 7:00 pm ET on Sunday, when Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell is sworn into office. Palin will deliver a farewell address, and newly minted Gov. Parnell will make remarks as well. The transfer-of-power event, O’Donnell and Verdugo add, takes place in Fairbanks, AK on the port bow of the S.S. Nenana. (Interesting fact: The S.S. Nenana, a riverboat, is nicknamed the "Last Lady of the River," and is the "largest stern-wheeler ever built west of the Mississippi and the second largest wooden vessel in existence," according to the state's website). The handover also occurs during Fairbanks' Golden Days festival, a celebration of the discovery of gold in Fairbanks back in 1902.

*** Jumping ship? Speaking of exits, the office of embattled Nevada Sen. John Ensign officially announced last night that the chief of staff and as his communications director were leaving -- which is never good news for a politician trying to hold on to his job.

*** Hillary Meets he Press: Finally, be sure to tune into “Meet the Press” on Sunday, when NBC’s David Gregory has an exclusive interview with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, conducted live, for the FULL hour.

As we wrap up another week here @ FR… some observations…

I’ll be the first to admit this has been a tough week around here!  But nothing worth fighting for ever comes easy!  We have ALL worked too hard & come too far to let our guards down now!

We must keep HRC out there front & center even MORE so now that our elected officials have decided their vacations are more important than American lives!

Shout out to a couple of the regulars who mentioned earlier in the week that there are some days that it gets so outrageous around here they take a breather! Take the time away we’ve always have your backs!

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned about how I’ve had days where I just didn’t want to  contribute … then I remind myself that’s the game of Stall – Spin – Lie – Cheat - Steal & Distract the opposition LOVES to play and is SO good at!

To all the lefties… a GIANT thank you for all you do & bring to the board!  WE must not lose our focus and keep our foot on the accelerator until we cross the finish line!

To Mark, Domenico & Ali… thanks for letting this feisty redhead come here and express her thoughts & opinions! I know sometimes my passion gets the better of me… You’re the best therapists around (not to mention cheap too :0)

FR is still the best board out around to engage in political dialogue! And hey now that the rightie’s are trying for a takeover around here you’re raking in some serious $$$ to boot! Ching Ching!

I do have a question for you guys (and didn’t want to wait until The Week Ahead)…

My question is this – Leon, Houston who’s been a regular around here for a long time appears to continue to have some serious health & health care issues and I would like to help him out!

As I’m not super ‘tech savvy’ I was wondering if you could possibly do a link or something for him where I could contribute something. I’m asking you guys here @ FR only because you have his e-mail address & I don’t.

Or Leon if you’re reading… maybe you could set up a separate e-mail account or web site we could visit and post it here?

I don’t have much but if I can cover a co-pay or two, buy a  tank of gas to get you to your Dr. appointment, help fill a prescription or cover a week of groceries I would love to give you some much needed relief!  And I’m sure there are more than a few others around here that wouldn’t mind either…

Keep up the good fight Leon my prayers are with you!

So that’s my question for this week… you think we can help a fellow American out?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Clara:  I’m going to take your advice and try to read the transcript from MTP Sunday!  And the only reason I would even bother to do that is because I want to hear what Hillary has to say!
Gotcha Gregory has GOT TO GO…
Replace him NOW with Lawrence O’…
Remember what our President said yesterday… Give them the TRUTH and it will feel like hell! LOL You gotta love it!
Well it's been an interesting week to say the least. Am I still too optimistic hoping for a healthcare plan being passed?
Obama is confused, as usual. It's not the timing of his health care plan that is bad, it's the plan that is bad!! It sucks. It costs a lot, a lot more then doing nothing would cost. It doesn't cover eveyone. It forces people to buy insurance even if they don't want. It rations service. More time isn't going to make those faults look better, it will make them look worse!
It’s the economy…stupid:
Stupid is getting a lot more attention than it deserves, but the devil made me say it. It’s always the throw-away comments that get you in trouble. All of us have made comments that we wish we could have reeled-in.
Yesterday the stock market Dow cleared 9000. To me what was significant about the number is the increase was broad based. A wide range of companies are showing improvement.  Ford is quickly becoming America’s number one car company.  The “cash for clunkers” starts today and that too will boost car sales.
Within the next 6 months the stimulus money will also have a positive impact on the economy.  Hypocrisy in action as Republicans who voted against the stimulus package now want to take credit by passing out money. Bobby Jindal, Shame on you!
Before the guy who asks, “Where are the jobs.” has a chance to comment, it is fair to say that he is either making a cheap shot at the President or has never held a senior management position.  There are a lot of reasons why jobs are often the first to go and the last to return.
Economic improvement will bode well for the Democrats in the 2010 election. There were a lot of Republicans who lost their job, lost their health insurance and will not be very forgiving to Republicans candidates.  If by some chance Healthcare is not passed, it will be the party of NO who will be blamed; even though the Senate has 58 Democrats and 2 independent senators.  In 2010 the Democrats could pick up one or two more senate seats and stay about even in the House.
It was not an easy week for our President, but he is working to help Main Street Americans.  He is at his best when the challenges are greatest. (Renegade)
First Read gets good grades this week.  Ali gets a lot of the credit.
Like it or not Bush got things done. He played well with others.
Man - all this does is prove there really is a PARALLEL UNIVERSE!
The only ONE Bush played well with was himself!
I saw that Morning Joe was devoting most of its time today to the arrest of the Professor, so I didn’t watch it. I am not interested in what most of the hosts during the day have to say about this subject, after watching their blatant ignorance all during the Rev. Wright story. Growing up in a large city, I have witnessed since I was a kid countless problems with the police having to be called to homes for one reason or another. And unfortunately, I have witnessed and heard about white people screaming into the faces of the police officers, calling them every name in the book. Nine times out of ten, the officers at the scene wait until it all boils over, and then they leave, with no one being arrested.
So I am at a loss why the professor was brought away in handcuffs.
GOP keeps focusing on winning 'battles' rather than winning the 'war'.  GOP may be happy that they have helped push Healthcare Reform to later in the year.  The BIG picture they have forgotten is that they have been boxed into a corner to pass healthcare reform in Fall 2009.
After the congressional summer recess, there will be NO room for the 'let us slow down' excuse.  That's the BIG picture folks and the President's strategy is on course - to pass health care reform in his 1st year in office (which is his actual campaign promise).
Ob's is now below a 50% approval rating. Yet another success of his for his first six months in office.
Racial Profiling--The last of this story
I’ve listened to various news sources report this story; the commentary (if you want to call it that) from the different sources have amazed me. The amazement is the fact that those that wish to offer comment in the negative sense, verses those that wish to sincerely understand and those that have experienced this issue is so divided that common sense has left understanding.
A lot of this story is due to “stupidly” (not lack of a better word) and paranoia. There are two distinctive issues going on here. The stupidity lies in “common text book law enforcement training” in making a “possible” burglary house call and upon arrival  the officers find out that it was a report in error.  This type of stuff is played out in the movies better than the actual issue that occurred. The arresting officer should have dealt with belligerence in a much more professional way than he chose to.
Imagine a police officer coming to your home with a complaint of a burglary and asking you for identification--you give your Id and words eschew.  The officer should have remembered that ‘He” was in someone else’s private domain, made his apologies and moved on, no harm, no foul.
The paranoia--Professor Gates no doubt, he has been the accosted in his lifetime having to constantly defend himself against various issues relating to his ideas, studies and actual personal issues of law enforcement profiling. If he is sixty-eight years old…I am sure he has had his share of racial problems.
Let’s face it…years ago (around 1970?) racial issues in Boston alone were televised.  Boston, Ma has come a long way since then.
The very fact that Sgt. James Crowley has taught classes about racial profiling for five years, doesn’t mean that is teaching and training wasn’t evaluated in a more realistic manner. It doesn’t matter he was hand picked by a former police Commissioner, Ronny Watson, who is black made his action correct either…that bit of reporting in itself left room for this debate. It wasn’t necessary to print color.
Being the mother of a minority male hasn’t been without worry. Even when that child was no where near situations that would create law enforcement problems, have placed “me” in fear of my child being profiled, arrested and slain. Slain for “just” being a minority. The reality of this crap exist, it’s called survival. In the 1980’s black males were consider as being an endangered species.
As I’ve said…there are various issues going on here and those that haven’t had to experience these issues have no voice in saying that these actions were unfounded.
That being said; it’s time to get back to the issues of the economy and Health Care Reform.
Shout out to Ed Schultz –The Ed Show, excellent again Ed, let’s keep the momentum going, recess will give us more time to examine lawmakers and insurance companies connections to the muck and bribery of our tax dollars going in their pockets.
David Schuster—Countdown, excellent reporting on Jindel’s “Big Ass Checks” (the stimulus money) and Rachel Maddow with the C-Street Brothel and the connection of more politicians living in that brothel of “The Family” and their family values.
Alright! Let's get busy!
"Still, Obama does seem annoyed that this became such a big story, but that's where things are these days on the issue of race."
Here's a another race situation, but in this case, a white supremacist ended up in jail: http://www.governmentalityblog.com/my_weblog/2009/07/mugshot-white-supremacist-kalki-errrmerrill-sech.html
Make sure to check out the mugshot.
Obama is finding out campaigning is easy, governing is hard. George Bush got things done. People may or may not have liked what Bush did, but Bush was able to do things. Bush played well with others, asked for other view points and worked with the Democrats on many issues in a bi-partisan way. Obama isn't even close to accomplishing those tasks. He couldn't care less about the Republicans. He's arrogant, "We won" he tells the Republicans. Yeah, you won alright Obama, so how come you can't govern?
FR: Speaking of exits, the office of embattled Nevada Sen. John Ensign officially announced last night that the chief of staff and as his communications director were leaving -- which is never good news for a politician trying to hold on to his job.
==============
Which begs the question, when are Gibbs and Emanual leaving Obama? My guess is by end of year.
No surprise that Obama is friends with the Harvard professor, i wonder if gates taught Obama to play the race card or the other way around.
For President Obama's poll numbers to slide while at the same time he is working night and day to get healthcare reform is puzzling. Thousands of people are being laid off daily, with no healthcare coverage. And the GOP, just like in the 1990's, want to do nothing, hoping it will gain them seats in 2010.
Yet the president's poll numbers are going down. The GOP don't care about Americans. They don't care. They never did and they never will. They can't even come up with their own plan. You would think a few of them would side with the president on this, so this very serious issue could move forward.
But they won't. And this is because they're in over their heads on this. Yet Americans will once again have to pay the price for Congress's stupidity, their quest for power. I hope there are no children out there who are in need of healthcare because of a serious illness.
If so, they will just have to wait until vacation time is over. That's the message given yesterday by Reid & Co.
Will Boehner be working on a real tan now? Is that his priority? Yup.
Keep it up Blue Dogs! Then kill the planned nationalization of student loans so we can get back to a true discussion on forming a true public-private partnership in student choice, retaining choice by the consumer, and emancipating the government from total risk.
And why isn't the major news outlets covering this story (especially non-print media)? It's NOT a business story. It's NOT a soft news story. It's a major issue affecting access and affordability to higher education, which impacts the economy and budgets nationally and within states.
First Read: And Wednesday’s press conference on health care turned into a controversy over race -- hardly its goal for that evening.
At least the race issue distracted from the disaster of Obama trying to explain his health care plan. Red pill? Blue pill? The government will decide if your kids tonsils come out? What a disaster Obama was at that presser.
And then Obama pushed race relations back a couple of decades in less then a minute. Nice job Barack!
The Gop's abysmal popularity w/ African and Hispanic Americans is basically keeping their mouths shut. It's comes down to the bigot's mouth piece of Beck, Druggy Limbaugh, xenophobic Dobbs and now the delusional/ignorant Jim Jones like Birther's to carry the torch for them.
I kinda liked the last guest on countdown when he let David Shuster have it at the end. I guess Shuster didn't like it, because he kept interrupting the guy (how rude). The guys stated "that the MSM keeps giving people like Liz Cheney the air time to spew her wrongful attacks against the president" and I agree with him.
But, a person kinda expects these people to go the FOX hate channel and vent, but I didn't think the other respectable channels would let these things  happen. And I though MSNBC was one of the respectable ones, guess I was wrong.
Yeah, it was another tough week ... for the Obama Trauma.
The guy is lost without cue cards. He made an A#1 fool of himself with that Cambridge incident and owes the officer an apology.
Yeah, the Cambridge story did take some of the pressure off Obie's illogical health care plan that is supposed to lead to nationalized health care.
The latest: "Just vote for it like you did the stimulus, without reding it and we'll fill in the blanks later."
Say no to Obama on anything he wants. He's a socialist with an attitude, and everybody is finally seeing the real Obie at last.
This White House three-ring circus has got to stop.
Obama's inexperience, and naivity are beginning to show.
This is exactly what we tried to warn the Democratic Party about last year, during the primary season.
He hasn't done anything since he took office, except talk. I think we're all getting a little tired of that.
We need less "talk," from him, and a little more "do."
In the meantime, I'll be watching MY de-facto President, Hillary Clinton, with David Gregory on Sunday morning.
If only we had been smarter last year, she could have been our leader.
Oh well, "live and learn."
What is with your pushing this punk, thug mafioso Rahm
as some fearsome hun on the hill?  This Chicago crook p.o.s. is going to get his windows cleaned if he continues to behave like some reform schoolyard bully.  FR, you and he are decidedly NOT impressive, let alone relevant. Bottom line: corrupt administration with crooks saturating every echelon and every office.  Time to restore the White House to a clean status and to disinfect Congress with a tanker load of bleach.
“I'm OK with politics, as you well know. You know, today Senator Inhofe, I don't have the exact quote, but basically the thrust of the quote was the political importance of defeating this because of what it would do to President Obama. So the GOP got pummeled last election and are deciding to take it personal by going on a vendetta against our sitting president.
How does that make you feel america?  Knowing that 40% of washington is not taking the time to fix programs that are crippling our economy because it would give the president a victory.
They do not want the presidents policies to fail...they want the president to fail.
They want america to fail until they get a republican back in office...no matter what the cost.  These people are evil and playing the slots on taxpayer money.
Things that are reported as “bad news” for the President when they are moving in the wrong direction, and as “no news” for the President when they are moving in the right direction:
Even the media focuses relentlessly on what is WRONG, there can be no doubt that POSITIVE CHANGES are taking place in America, whether the media chooses to report it or not.
The era of everything being SCORED based solely on political one-upmanship is slowly but surely ending as Americans realize that in the games that are being played, the only loser is us – the 90% of Americans who earn less COMBINED than the top 1% of Americans in this country.
http://extremeinequality.org/?page_id=8
The top 1% also controls the media, which is why we are all being told that obsessing over a Cambridge cop is more important than fighting for health care reform.
I mean seriously, what is the rush when you are so rich you don't even know if you have health insurance and you are not sure how many homes you own.
America is being played for a fool, yet again.
First Read: It's still hard to imagine a scenario where Obama doesn't sign something he calls health-care reform by the end of the year.
Looks like First Read is getting through there 12 step program. First is denial, then anger, and now we're getting to the acceptance part. Will something get signed? Sure. Some kind of bailout vanilla bs health care legislation that won't do a damn thing for anyone. Then Obama can claim victory and get back to what he does best, being a celebrity.
While it's been somewhat of a tough week for President Obama better weeks are coming.  The polls haven't reflected the recent gain in the stock markets and I'm sure that the market's good two weeks will be reflected by higher approval ratings as people worry less about the bushwhacked economy.
Still it's been another great week here at First Read, the best place on the web for political discourse.  Many thinks to the great First Read crew of Chuck, Mark, Domenico, Ali and Luke for posting so many great articles and reader comments.  Many kudos to the great Obama supporters who post so many great comments.  Even thanks to the conservative whiners who post here for helping make MSNBC.com and First Read the most popular news website for the past 12 months.
Nice to hear the good news that Adulterer Ensign is losing important staff as they see the handwriting on the wall that they're working for a pervert who going down the tubes if he thinks he's running for reelection.
In First Read We Trust!
In MSNBC.com We Trust!
New Jersey! Many, many thanks! Now you're back to being the most corrupt state in the country. Kind of takes the pressure off of us here in Illinois.
The new Republican platform: 10. The Earth is flat. 2. The Sun orbits the Earth. 3. All Life on Earth was created at the same time. 4. No and Power are the only words they truly understand. 5. My Way is the Most Important Saying in the world.
Finally, be sure to tune into “Meet the Press” on Sunday, when NBC’s David Gregory has an exclusive interview with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, conducted live, for the FULL hour.
==============
Maybe Hillary will announce her candidacy for President.
Clearly, the media's need to paint with a broad brush and eliminate all nuance from every situation is feeding the ridiculous and non stop analysis of the Professor Gates/Cambridge cop story.
The policeman should not have arrested Professor Gates.
The fact that he did arrest Professor Gates does not mean he is a racist.
The fact that every interaction between people of different races in this country has to be microanalyzed to the point of ridiculousness is a large part of the problem.
There was a misunderstanding.
It was handled poorly.
It was resolved.
Let's move on.
Given that the White House chooses the topics that reporters are assigned at 'press conferences', Obama seriously miscalculated the effect his Gates answer would have.  The whole situation is ridiculous.  I was in a similar situation years ago-came back from an errand, and found myself locked out of my own house.  There's a low front window, and I was looking in my purse for something to slit the screen with, so i could open the window to climb through, muttering to myself "why do these things always happen when there's no one to help me".  I voice behind me responded, "I'll be happy to help you, if you can tell me what you're doing".  A police officer happened to be patrolling, and saw me 'breaking in'.  I showed him my driver's license, and he helped me get in the window.  No incident. Gates made this an incident.
Harry Reid sees the handwriting on the wall-and is unwilling to pass this health care mess without seeing the numbers that congress, and the public, have the right to see before they increase the debt any more than Obama already has.  Not to mention tht Tenncare failed due to costs, and Masscare is following suit.  Why not learn from experience?
This will be my last post for a while.  Work is picking up, and I won't have time.
So, Pete Roleum, Bill in Fairfax VA, Cicero, Lynn Wheatly, Bad Chihuaha, Richard in Washington, et al-I'm hoping you fill in for me-there are people on this board who need to hear reason from the other side.
jeff in Evanston-please go to realclearpolitics while i'm gone.  They pull in articles from all sides on every issue, post the polls and the questions asked.  You are a reasonable person, and I know that you are interested in getting all the facts.
Anita/Fiesty-I'm wrooied about you.  You now have more converations with yourself on each post than ever before.  I just worry about your mental health-what happens when you begin to argue with yourself, and lose?
mark, Dominico-it's been real.  please chip in to get Chuck Todd a copy of the Journalistic code of eithics.  he needs a copy.
So long, friends and foes!  Hopefully, I'll be back from time to time!
Nice try with the statements on unemployment.  Obama still has to create many, many jobs to keep his promise.  Where are the jobs, Obama???  Still too many people losing jobs every week.
"NBC’s David Gregory has an exclusive interview with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, conducted live, for the FULL hour"
David Gregory is NOT a Moderator, or Host.  He is always on the "offense" with Democratic guests--smirking constantly.  Firing off question after question, not waiting for an answer-- trying for a "gotcha moment"!
His tone and mannerisms are offensive!  Suggest tying his hands down to see if it improves his behavior!
He is a very ineffective instigator, at best!
Make him respect Secretary Clinton!
What wonderful news that Quitter Palin is losing support among her clueless base of idiot huggers.  Alaska is so lucky her last day of incompetence as their governor are almost over, the 2.5 year nightmare from Wasilla will be moving out.  We need to get deadbeat Arnold to deploy the border patrol to stop the Wicked Wasilla Witch from stinking up our state with her presence.
Chris Matthews did a great job yesterday debunking the Birther conspiracy for the idiots they are.  He had on felon G. Gordon Liddy, one of Criminal Nixxon's Watergate criminals and it was gratifying to see how feebleminded he has become.  If this felon is behind the Birther conspiracy then we can see what a lie it is.  The only deadbeats who are ignoring President Obama's birth certificate are the creepy Birthers.  President Obama is the legal president of our country so Get Over It!
Looks like the stock markets are voting their approval of the Obama Recovery and the stimulus bill is working as the DOW tops 9,000.  Quite a turnaround from the freefall stock markets that Clueless George left Barack.  Businesses are becoming more optimistic and that's good news since they'll be hiring more people and firing less people and soon the job losses of the bushwhacker will turn into the job gains of Obama.
In Obama We Trust!
FR, you chronically appear to have two underlying themes: 1. your obvious fear that your messiah is well on his way down the slippery, treacherous slope from god to gremlin with the 2010 election outcomes appearing quite troublesome, and 2. your obsession with Governor Sarah Palin.  How about a little honesty here and admit you and the tainted messiah are smoke, mirrors, and yet more smoke.  Blow it somewhere else.
"The White House’s "clear the decks" mentality is the opposite of what Team Obama bragged about when it came to focusing on more than one big issue at a time. And they are paying a steep political price for it." -First Read
===============================================
The President is paying "a steep political price" for trying to bring relief to average Americans from the relentless rate increases and denial of care from the for-profit health insurance industry?
Well good, because it is WHAT WE ELECTED HIM TO DO.
And I am THRILLED that he is doing it, in spite of all the entrenched interests trying to distract us with ginned up racial issues and flat out lies.
Keep up the good work, Mr. President - American TRUSTS you to put our interests ahead of the special interests.
Bottom line is that the Blue Dogs have all the power now. Unless Obama caters to them, nothing will get done. Dems have the house, senate, and white house and cannot agree on anything. What a failure.
Well if we can't get healthcare reform then how about some tax cuts for small business owners, full tax credits for every penny spent on employee health insurance by the employer, reduction or elimination of employer payroll taxes like socialist security and medicare...
Yeah I'm a business owner and the above things won't creat any new employment but it will put about 150K more in my wife and I's pockets if we weren't paying all of these socialist taxes and benefits to employees.
I've given up and joined the republicans in their quest for "yer on yer own' economics...funny thing is that many of my employees are republican or leaning republican and they would be giving up 150K in compensation under their own plans. Ironic eh?
Bring on the tax cuts and benefit reductions!
FR: "It's been another relatively tough week for President Obama."
--------------------------------------------
As I've noted before, EVERY week is a tough week for President Obama due to the fact that the "main stream" media, birther wingnut Republicans, and "blue dog" Democrats are all working for corporate America and against the president and the people.
As for health reform, the corporate special interests arrayed against it may well leave us with the current Marie Antoinette-style system: "Let them go to the emergency room."
This is a total replay of 1993. A new president tries to reform health care. The lobbyists, the right wing, and conservative Democrats kill it. The status quo is maintained.
For decades, we have ignored our difficult problems.  We’ve pretended we were wealthy (increased debt, reduced tax revenues).  The invoice has come due and payable on our unfettered greed.  Why do Republicans hate America?  When you suck the equity out of your company (or like Madoff and Sanford – you never inject equity into a company) is it any surprise that the cards tumble down?  Republicans are framing this healthcare debate as something we can’t afford.  Why don’t they understand basic principles?  If people weren’t crippled by premiums and deductibles, they would have extra cash to spend.  And let’s face it, both parties are guilty of creating spenders and not savers.
We can no longer defer the maintenance on our Healthcare system or our energy policy or our educational system or any of the other BIG ticket items.  We need to end the wars, put our space program on hold and focus on our domestic issues.  Other countries have figured this out.  Why do we continue to feign superiority when we are lagging in SO many indicators?
Pat, Huntington – You should submit that idea.  Tort reform HAS to be a part of the discussion.
I can’t stomach David Gregory for 10 minutes and he is somehow going to painfully fill an entire hour without a panel?  Thanks, but no thanks – I’ll watch George S or water my plants.
And from yesterday:
jacksmith, Dallas, Texas. (Sent Wednesday, July 22, 2009 7:13 PM)
I appreciate your efforts and your post.  I just wanted to add a couple of points – Kit Bond is NOT running for re-election – It is an open seat that is polling 20 points up for Dem Robin Carnahan OVER Congressional Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R).  Also, Kay Bailey Hutchinson is running for Governor of Texas next year (apparently she can see Mexico from her porch).  So that’s another open Senate seat.  Mel Martinez  is also NOT running in Florida – open seat showing neck and neck race (can’t remember the Dem) but Crist has a slight advantage.  Rumor on the street is that Sam Brownback is running for governor of Kansas, not sure it has been announced.  Voinovich of Ohio is NOT running for re-election, although I haven’t followed the state trend lately.  So, as you can see – there are plenty of opportunities for Dems to perform well in 2010.  Of course, it will be very dependent on where the economy is and the stomach for President Obama’s agenda.  Personally, I say Dems pick up another 2-3 seats.  Time will tell.
Very good post from you.  But, thanks to the last eight years (and potentially the next eight) ‘Trust’ will indeed become a four letter word you can’t say in church or public.  If only the “haves” would self regulate.  If only the “have not’s” would moderate.  I trust very few people, and probably none complicitly (word?).  I recommend others exhibit the same level of caution.
Ron, Indianca - thanks for following my posts - I enjoy your musings, as well!
I haven't submitted anything to the tv folks.  I usually just go straight to the Senate/Congress or to the Editors
Let's talk about some positives....It's a certainty that Sonia Sotomayor will be confirmed next Tues....That WILL help President Obama maintain strong favorability with Hispanic voters, who already supported Obama heavily in the 2008 election...I bet Obama gets at LEAST 70% of the Hispanic vote in 2012..
Also, Obama had success on the F 22 vote earlier in the week...
David Gregory questions to Sec. of State Clinton:
Do you think President Obama loves America as much as you do?
During the campaign, you said Barack Obama was an idiot. Do you stand by that?
President Cheney and George Bush "kept us safe" after 9-11. Doesn't that prove President Bush was right to spend a trillion dollars in Iraq? If you disagree, does that mean you are AGAINST safety for Americans?
Are you SURE you're not going to run for President in 2012?
What brand of cigarette does the President smoke?
Why don't we ever see you in skirts anymore?
Hard hitting "journalist" that David . . .
The for-profit health care industry has already won this one. Their investment of hiring 3,500 former government staffers and spending over $1,000,000 per day to kill any attempt at health care reform was sucessful. They will now be even more arrogant as they deny coverage, charge exorbitant premiums, refuse treatments and refuse to pay claims. Medical costs now contribute to 62 percent of all bankruptices in America, and that figure will increase. These corporate health care monsters tell us that we can't do any better than the system we have. What they really mean is that THEY can't get a better cash cow than this system provides them. God help those with pre-existing conditions or those who get sick. It looks like they'll be hung out to dry forever. I don't think any President or Congress--Democrat or GOP--will ever have the spine to challenge the powerful and entrenched health care industry in America.
It is beginning to look like Rev. Wright had a bigger influence on our President's view of the races than he claimed he had.  Prof. Gates defence of "But I took it all back officer" is no defence for refusing to follow an officer's instructions - especially when responding to a burglary in progress call!
I support health care reform...but not entirely sure in the way the Dems in the House have made it. I simply don't know enough about it, and I don't trust anyone, Republican Democrat Congressional Budget Office Independents Medical Lobby Groups, who tell me it will increase/decrease costs, make things worse or better.  I think my feelings are shared by many. I will say this however, it seems to me the biggest problem is what Doctors charge, and how Insurance pays out on claims.  Perhaps the first thing Congress and Obama should've tackled is this problem...and it would probably gain them more populist support which could then be used to go the next step for getting uninsured covered.  I think the better course of conduct would be to first take measures to reduce cost and then after that, tackled the uninsured problem.  This Obama supporter thinks he may have it backwards.
Why does the media always need to discuss good week/bad week as if we must keep score?  There will be good weeks, better weeks and bad weeks.  The public doesn't care, we just want to know he's trying and trying hard to solve the many problems.  In six months, Pres Obama has accomplished more than seems possible.  I took a "time out" from politics yesterday because I found the slicing/dicing of the press conference and every word said over the top.  He wasn't animated enough, he looked tired, he should have waited until next week, where was the "grand speech" Wed night--it was a press conference NOT a speech, he had met with the Iraqi leader and done countless other tasks before this.  He is smart and gave intelligent, indepth answers.  Why must the media feel the need to find fault with nearly everything Obama does and says.  Give the man a chance to succeed, he has 3 1/2 more years to do so.
But the big tent means more representation for this multi-cultured society.  Rahm Emmanuel is a smart, tough guy and no doubt he reminded those blue dogs how they got elected and why.  The people voted for Obama and democrats because they wanted change.  My guess is those blue dogs will support the president and the sooner HCR gets done, the more time they have to explain the bill and why it is good for their constituents.
"so long, far well..." Palin.  Now if only she would vanish from the news for awhile and take Liz Cheney with her.  Maybe they could both take a cruise on that boat.
Senator Ensign is a hypocrit of the highest order.  It bugs me that anyone who could demand others, including republicans, to resign for misbehavior sees himself as different.  My guess is he will be gone either by resignation or voted out of office because of the $96,000 paid, the salaries, the 19-year old son of mistress getting high paying job and the list goes on.
Thanks, Rachel Maddow for keeping us informed about the "C" Street gang.  It seems that her focus has begun a focus by local and national news papers.  About time because this group sounds like a religious cult and not a religion.
Have a great weekend everyone.  Thanks FR for giving us plenty to discuss and enjoy your time off.
At the root of most of this mess lies the bush anti middle class anti bankruptcy law of 2005 which was wholely written by MBNA. This directly led to the record CC defaults, and now we also find evidence that it led to the mortgage meltdown. This law along with other policies squeezed the middle class out of existence, but bush got over 1,1 million in campaign cash from the industry . so what if it ruined millions of middle class lives. he got his.
that said I'm not obama's biggest fan yet either but at least he is trying. to get this country moving again, the middle class need:
I. a stimulus check(28,000 per middle class family
would be nice) I dare any one to filibuster against that.
II. National healthcare public option with an option to keep your own policy if it's that great(mine isn't,worst than not having any)
III. rescind bush's anti middle class anti bankruptcy law of 2005 written by MBNA.yea I know biden voted for it. his soul is owned by the card companies.
Another tough week:
I must admit that the handling of the Health Care Issue from the House has been unreal. However, I do feel that the House version will meet the August deadline. Max Bacus on the Finance Committee is treading in dangerous territory with his assing around and I have a strong feeling that more Blue Dog Conservative Democrats will wish that they had done a better job than the controversey they've caused regarding the issue of looking out for their constutients. More time to dig up and expose those that are on the hoof to insurance companies and drug manufactures.
**************
Unity isn’t easy under a big tent: This is the same Emanuel who recruited some of these Blue Dogs to run in these tough districts back in 2005 and 2006, promising them he'd be looking out for their politics, while promoting the idea to reporters that he was finding candidates that "fit their districts."
I would wager a "big" bet that he was laying out the scenarios, given the fact that coming down the pike the risk of exposure they face with the connection of the insurance companies. I've also noticed several other instances that I refuse to divulge until I feel that it would be more fuel for our party. He no doubt used his clout to give them time to think about the pros verses the cons...I would have...I'm vicious like that in business...I've learned well over the years.
*********************
*** The bottom line on health care: It's still hard to imagine a scenario where Obama doesn't sign something he calls health-care reform by the end of the year.
You make it sounds as though it will be a s***Y bill. I think that you've crossed the line with this statement. Because he is the person that he is (responsible), I feel that a lot of thought will go into the process. Let's face it, for sixty years we have suffered and been at the mercy of crooked politicians and greedy capitalist that don't give a dam about us. They've used and robbed us until they’ve drained our pockets. Do you seriously think that we will accept just anything? No and the CIC knows that. So let's take a step back here on this statement.
***************
*** On Gates/Cambridge: There's an uncomfortable joke at the White House right now: "Thank God for the Henry Louis Gates Jr. story, because it steps on the really bad health care day the president had Thursday."
Bad for the press but not for the majority of Americans that listened in. This Gates issue is not really and issue that needs avoiding but discussed. It should be discussed at a none biased round table with various minorities sitting in and not talk show host that are clueless about issues relating racial profiling.
It is time for Obama and that nutcase Rahm to stop looking for someone to blame and take responsiblity for the mess they have made of healthcare anti-reform (that's where you bend the curve up). The GOP does not have the votes to block this poorly conceived liberal sinkhole... So the left needs to pass it or admit even thoughtful liberals know this is a mistake.
Obama is confused, as usual. It's not the timing of his health care plan that is bad, it's the plan that is bad!! It sucks. It costs a lot, a lot more then doing nothing would cost. It doesn't cover eveyone. It forces people to buy insurance even if they don't want. It rations service. More time isn't going to make those faults look better, it will make them look worse!
