First thoughts: Losing the message war?

*** Losing the message war? Perhaps the biggest thing that stood out to us at President Obama’s AARP town hall yesterday was that the White House appears to be losing the message war on health care. How do we know? Just listen to the questions the AARP callers had. Several of them asked about "rumors,” and they also brought up GOP talking points on "rationing" or the government coming to your house to ask how you want to die (!!!). Also, Obama's closing statement at the town hall was particularly telling. "Sometimes I get a little frustrated because this is one of those situations where it's so obvious that the system we have isn't working well for too many people and that we could just be doing better,” he said. “We're not going to have a perfect health care system; it's a complicated system, there are always going to be some problems out there. But we could be doing a lot better than we're doing right now."

Video: President Obama says that the skyrocketing cost of health care is one of the reasons Americans need health reform urgently at town hall meeting sponsored by AARP.

*** Pushing back: Also at the AARP town hall, Obama tried to push back more directly at the criticisms aimed at his health-care push. "So this is not like Canada where suddenly we are dismantling the system and everybody's signed up under some government program." More: "You know, I guarantee you, first of all, we just don't have enough government workers to send to talk to everybody, to find out how they want to die… I just want to be clear: Nobody is going to be knocking on your door; nobody is going to be telling you you've got to fill one out. And certainly nobody is going to be forcing you to make a set of decisions on end-of-life care based on some bureaucratic law in Washington." And here he was channeling Jon Stewart: "And I got a letter the other day from a woman. She said, 'I don't want government-run health care, I don't want socialized medicine, and don't touch my Medicare.' (Laughter.) And I wanted to say, well, I mean, that's what Medicare is, is it's a government-run health care plan that people are very happy with.”

Video: Can GOP scare tactics prevent Congress from voting on the health care bill? Rachel Maddow is joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT.

*** More tweaks are coming: Bottom line: The president is showing his frustration, and he appears to be TRYING to tweak his messaging. And more tweaks are coming today when Obama holds town halls on health care in Raleigh, NC (at 11:55 am ET) and Bristol, VA (4:15 pm). In fact, the White House is now talking about health INSURANCE reform, not health CARE reform. As an administration spokesperson emails NBC News, “At events in North Carolina and Virginia today, the president will lay out for Americans why health insurance reform means more security and stability for them and their families. Building on the theme that he outlined at the start of last week’s press conference, the president will make it clear that when he signs a reform bill into law, the discrimination, dropping, and coverage gaps that riddle today’s health insurance system will be a thing of the past.”

*** NBC/WSJ poll day! Just how is the president’s health-care push playing with the American public? What about his new job-approval numbers? And how is the nation viewing Sarah Palin after her resignation on Sunday? Well, beginning at 6:30 pm ET, be sure to tune into NBC Nightly News or click on to MSNBC.com for the answers from our brand-new NBC/WSJ poll.

Video: The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein discusses why some Blue Dog Democrats in Congress are holding up health care reform legislation.

*** Slowly but surely? Turning to the health-care work on Capitol Hill, the Senate Finance Committee wrapped up its work yesterday with no agreements but more progress, NBC’s Ken Strickland reports. (Sound familiar?) The panel's Democrats met in the morning and the bipartisan working group of six met in the afternoon. The G6 talks (among three Dems and three Republicans) resume today at 10:00 am ET. After yesterday’s Democratic meeting, Strick adds, Sen. John Kerry suggested a deal could be close at hand. "There's probably a consensus, an agreement on almost 80% of this," he said. "And I think in the next hours and days, that gap is going to close very, very significantly." Committee Chairman Max Baucus said he thinks finding ways for the pay for the reform "are pretty well nailed down." On the other hand, while Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow noted the panel was "moving in the right direction," she also said there were still "lots of details to workout." One of her top concerns was trying to establish a stronger public/government insurance option than the co-op path the Finance Committee seems it will take.

*** Triangulate this: Speaking of public option vs. co-op, the Finance Committee plan is either going to be the most brilliant piece of triangulation ever, or it's going to open up a fight on the left that is U-G-L-Y. Clearly, the White House is VERY open to a co-op. It is trying hard NOT to bash the public option or show preference to a co-op. But Team Obama definitely has an open mind.

*** The sausage factory is never pretty to watch: By the way, regarding all of this breathless reporting about no House vote on health care this week: HELLOOO!!! It's been reported this way for the past four days. Now, however, House Democrats apparently keep telling a new reporter that they won't vote -- but they wring their hands about it creating yet another bad process story. This is what makes the president's challenge so difficult. He's not selling a plan, but the idea of creating a plan. The plan is being shaped by Congress, and that's where the focus is. And watching the sausage factory is never a pretty sight.

*** On the Glenn Becks and Howard Beales: The White House doesn't want to give Glenn Beck a bigger platform or extra oxygen -- especially regarding his remark yesterday that the president has "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture" -- so they won't comment, even off record. Beck, after all, is a radio DJ who somehow ended up getting a national platform to give his opinion on politics. What's most amazing about this episode is that what Beck said isn't a fireable or even a SUSPENDABLE offense by his bosses. There was a time when outrageous rants like this would actually cost the ranters their jobs. But not anymore; if anything, it's now encouraged. And all of this could turn ACTUAL journalists into the next Howard Beales. It's getting nuts that the folks who are creating the perception of an ideological/polarized media world are people who have never really spent their lives being journalists. Whether it's former political consultants-turned-TV execs or former radio DJs, or former California socialites, the folks helping to accelerate the public's perception of the media off a cliff made their livings trying to do other things. Of course, Beck's crazy language could have one unintended consequence: It could cost him bookings with any Republicans who want to be popular outside Beck's hard-core bizarro-land viewers.

Video: Fox News host Glenn Beck says President Obama has a 'deep-seated hatred for white people" and accuses him of being a racist. The NAACP's Hilary Shelton discusses with MSNBC's Contessa Brewer.

*** Fighting back on the stimulus: Democrats, meanwhile, are fighting back on the stimulus. The DNC is going up with a TV ad (on national and DC cable) and radio spots targeting GOPers Mike Pence, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Mitch McConnell, and Jon Kyl. The TV ad goes, “They supported the Bush policies that sank our economy into recession. They broke it -- now they refuse to fix it. Tell Republicans leaders to stop playing politics with our economy."

Video: Democratic Mayor of San Antonio, Julian Castro talks about the renewed debate over the stimulus plan and its effectiveness on the economy.

*** Napolitano in the news: Finally today, at 9:00 am ET, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano
delivers a major address on homeland security. Per the Wall Street Journal, she’s “expected to outline Wednesday the Obama administration's domestic approach to preventing terrorist attacks -- a strategy that will rely in large measure on refining and expanding initiatives launched under President George W. Bush.”

Okay everybody… let’s take a deep breath for a minute on this HCR battle (because that’s what it’s shaping up to be) even within our own party! I had a feeling this was going to be an even tougher week than last…

These yellow striped Blue Dog’s seem to have forgotten who got them elected last year and are in need of a good spanking as much as the mangy mutt that hangs around here!

The fact is our legislators feel that their ‘Summer Vacation’ is more important than American lives!

It doesn’t need to be said the GEENOPEE will be polishing off every dirty trick & tactic in the Republican’t bag of dirty tricks !

We must not sit back and allow this to happen & here’s what we should do…

First:

Clara, Kansas City MO – would you be so kind to repost the letter you were sending to the Senators on HCR! It was an awesome outline and we can all ‘tweak’ it a little bit to fit our needs.  We MUST then send this to every elected official that’s even slightly thinking about not having the b@lls to VOTE for what’s right! Every single week while the cowards are on recess!

Second:

Follow Greg P. NW Indiana’s advise below – No Public Option – No $$$$ - Just how simple is that?

I receive update emails from the obama administration every week...I'm sure some of you on here do as well.  I am going to reply to each of these emails with the same response in hopes to let him know my stance.  I hope those of you who supported our president during the campaign do as well.

The response is..."no donation, no support, until a public option (not the insurance run co-op) is passed"

Third:

Speaking of e-mails… not only am I bombarded with them from the Obama Administration I also receive a ton from the ‘grass roots’ organizations I worked with during the campaign (I know more than a few of you out there get them as well)!  Anyway I’m reposting the one from yesterday about the upcoming health care rally here in Chicago on August 4th – I suggest anyone else out there that has one of these do it as well and then ATTEND!

MAJOR RALLY TO SUPPORT PRESIDENT OBAMA'S
HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL
When:   August 4, 2009, 4:30 PM -- 6:00 PM
Where:   Federal Plaza
ADAMS AND DEARBORN, Chicago
(CTA stops: Monroe Blue Line, Monroe Red Line)
Who:   U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky & others to be announced

RSVP to hcan@citizenaction-il.org
For more information, call: 312.427.2114 ext. 206 (Jessica) or ext. 208 (John)
Visit: www.hcanil.org

Fourth:

Make sure to show up at any of these klan (oops) I mean town hall meetings where the lies from the right will be flying faster than the shuttle… to debunk the cr@p their slinging with all the fear mongering (for your own safety I would highly recommend bringing a couple of friends)!

Fifth:

Talk to your family… talk to your friends & neighbors – we MUST not remain SILENT!  The fear & smear machine is going to be out in FULL FORCE and we must counter each jab with a resounding upper cut!

Sixth:

We MUST keep the names & amounts of these lobbyist loving elected officials out here EVERY DAY!  As well as the obscene amounts of compensation the fat cat insurance exec’s are receiving

I said it weeks ago.. it’s going to be a long HOT summer…However, this issue is worth fighting for!

Lefties let’s not lose focus of the fact that SUPERIOR organization was one of the elements that won President Obama the election and there’s absolutely NO reason we can’t WIN the HCR Battle as well!

If I missed anything… please get your ideas on board now!

Without a PUBLIC OPTION… it’s nothing more than business as usual!  In case anyone hasn’t already noticed… I DIDN’T VOTE for Business as USUAL!

Ready… Set…Go… Pass HCR NOW!

CO-OP = COPOUT! (PERIOD)
Cash for Clunkers:

I suspect the Hoosier state has a few more clunkers than the average (state).  You’ll find most clunkers along the Ohio River that separates Indiana from Kentucky. Yep, that’s Palin country. It seems that Cletus, Billy Bob, and Bubba are keeping their guns, throwing their beer bottles out of the trunk, and turning in their old cars for bright, shiny new ones.  If projections hold (nationwide), the billion dollars will be used-up in two to three weeks. [The last statement is true.]

Listening:

Many, many years ago, when I was a young man I learned a valuable lesson.  When I’m talking, I’m not learning. Early-on I began to listen, and watch, and think.  Last night while watching Howard Dean I heard the statistic 72% of the American people were for healthcare reform. Fifty percent of the Republicans wanted healthcare reform. Now I’ve heard these statistics before but didn’t take time to think about what that means.

In this healthcare debate, who is listening? And who is out of touch with the American people?  Bingo!!  Our President is listening and the Republicans are not.  To Republicans ideology is more important than people’s needs.  Baucus is not listening.  He is tied to health insurance money, thus has a conflict of interest.

Next week Congressmen and women will be returning to their home district.  We need to meet them at the airport, in their driveway, at the supermarket and at the park.  They need to be reminded that their ticket to returning to Congress is to vote for healthcare with the public option.

They also need to be reminded that health insurance money will not get them elected, but our votes will.  In Indiana, Eli Lilly is a pharmaceutical company that makes millions and they make large contributions to politicians. Their money will not be as powerful as our votes. President Obama listened to the people and bet his career on that fact.

BTW, don’t you think Ali’s picture should be posted below Domenico’s?  She is part of the team…isn’t she?

Obama wakes up, has a smoke, and wonders how he can fool everyone again today.
Nice of Obie to tell the AARP members it's their duty to die, but ony after they can't pay taxes anymore.
To Senator Paul Stanley:

Why were you having an affair with an older person, and why a female?

Yuch!

Another One Bites The Dust

Good morning everyone—Looks as though it’s crying time again for the Republican Party…another Senator is resigning amid scandal of an affair. Senator Paul Stanley (R) Memphis (he sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee). He had an affair with a 22 year old intern and claims she was blackmailing him. Here goes the scoop:

"Due to recent events, I have decided to focus my full attention on my family and resign my Senate seat effective August 10," Republican Sen. Paul Stanley wrote in his resignation letter.

Court records show that Stanley, 47, told agents investigating a blackmail case that he had a sexual relationship with intern McKensie Morrison. Her boyfriend, Joel Watts, is charged with trying to extort $10,000 from Stanley in April in return for explicit photos of Morrison that Stanley had taken.”

First there was Governor Sanford, then Senator Ensign and now Senator Stanley. What’s up with these guys that the “family values” group of Christians that are so self righteous that they keep being exposed with sex scandals? I wonder if he was also tied to the C-Street Brothel.

Governor Howard Dean was excellent hosting Countdown on last night. I especially enjoyed his topics that centered on Health Care. I’m no longer surprised by the fraud and abuse that’s being revealed about the seven major insurance companies that have been fleecing us.Rachel Maddow’s show was again informative as well.

The C-Street politicians have been taking a lot of trips to foreign countries taunting their sick perverted views to leaders of other nations on the taxpayer’s dime. Gee, the Bush administration had zero control on the going on’s of the Republican Party. I thought that the Sate Department was supposed to be dealing with foreign policy.

The inmates were running the asylum. There should be ethics complaints filed against the C-Street Band of merry whore mongers. This latest scandal is leaving me wondering…WTF been really happening to our national security. Anytime these merry whoremongers are allowed to represent this Nation pandering their ideology as being representative of the entire nation is unfounded.

It’s time for investigations to start. Senator Ensign, Senator Stanley resigned and it’s high time you follow suit.
Yes, the White House is losing the message war on health care reform. And President Obama's biggest mistake - not bringing Dr. Howard Dean into his Administration.

May be too late to get what he wants now. Health care reform shouldn't be a political game, but that's exactly what it is. The lying and misinformation continues at lightening speed.

Great job last night by Dr. Dean. By Ed Schultz. By Rachel. But what we need is the Democrats in DC to speak up. Aggressively.

The only loud voices I'm hearing are the fruitcakes who have convinced senior citizens that health care reform is going to kill them.

What a country. It's not even funny anymore.
Becks comments were out of line.
*** On the Glenn Becks and Howard Beales:

That's funny coming from msnbc and the race baiting loons you've had working for this station and on as guest. If all things were reversed you MIGHT be able to see it, but you've been trained in denial.
Huh?  Obama thinks people are "very happy" with medicare???  Boy, is he ever out of touch.
Glenn Beck is the rage, no doubt. A sharp-tongued radio and TV host with an unbelievable sense of humor. He even goes on tour. He's one of a kind and yesterday's show exposed the Obama platform once and for all. I'm sure he'll drive the nail deeper and deeper into the Dem coffin.

By the way, he also doesn't like the Repubs much either. He's out to expose everybody and man, he can push some buttons. No one is safe with Beck around.

Of course he gets threats. Cops sit outside his house 24/7 because of all the lib threats he gets.
*** On the Glenn Becks and Howard Beales:

You forgot to mention Keith Olbermann.  Hosting Sportscenter does not a journalist make.

"Journalism" today isn't really about reporting the news, its about BEING the news.  Cable news networks have little interest in reporting the stories of the day.  Their interest is in entertaining people, whether it be with a rant from a crazy person or getting to look at a pretty blond on Fox.  News is no longer news.  It's been dumbed down to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

The sad thing, we all eat it up!
'I don't want government-run health care, I don't want socialized medicine, and don't touch my Medicare.' (Laughter.) And I wanted to say, well, I mean, that's what Medicare is, is it's a government-run health care plan that people are very happy with.”
-----------------------------------------------------

These are the people that put George Bush in office.  They read chain emails and take them to heart...birthers, tea-baggers, call em what you will.

The sad thing is...you can open their eyes, give them facts until you are blue in the face.  Yet they still cannot overcome the urge to "pick teams"

There are no teams with healthcare...if democrats (especially blue dogs) falter and give up the farm on healthcare, I'll be the first to the polls to choose a different option.  This has become, the insurance industry and who they donate to in washington against the american people.

Those are the "teams"

This co-op situation is a bunch of crap unless it is on a national level.  On a state level, it will not compete and be too hard to transfer to those who need to move or get care in different regions.  BTW...if a co-op is "owned by its constituents" isn't a govt. run non-for profit public option a co-op?

P.S.  Open up these closed door meetings...let's see who is really selling out america.
Obama is going to take what amounted to a 42-0 halftime lead into the locker room and lose this game.   The stunning thing this time is that the Pharma & Insurance companies are going to not only WIN but ALSO come out with higher approval ratings.   They have played Obama & America like fiddles with their "we really think overhaul is needed" message combined with behind the scenes hijacking of anything meaningful.   It's remarkable to watch.   And Obama will leave this fight BADLY bruised.   As an Independent voter, I thought he was going to fight for certain things.  Instead, he's dancing on the sidelines while the most critical pieces of reform (Financial Markets, Healthcare) get sidetracked and swamped.   It's disgraceful...
Dave from TN, who are the race-baiting loons?   Name two.   Naw, name one.   About the only one you could come up with is Pat Robertson.
Glenn Beck - please! FOX encourages his rants, because FOX is a racist Right-wing propaganda machine that reports news only 10% of the day, and spends the rest of it hemming and hawing about Obama [in the past 8 years it spent the same time worshipping the shrub and the almight reagan].
The libbys tweak this and tweak that.

Just like the birdies go tweak, tweak, tweak, tweak, tweak.
Perhaps the W.H. should recruit Jon Stewart to simplify and relay their HC reform message. Stewart's eloquent explanation to Bill Kristol that a public healthcare plan can and has worked for the millions of soldiers and other veterans in need of these services. Stewart took Bill Kristol to the woodshed, whoopped his neoconservative butt good, and sent him home sniffling.

Congress also has a government run healthcare plan and I don't hear them complaining. Politics is the real reason why HC reform has stalled in Washington. Nobody in Congress should be able to enjoy their healthcare benefits until every American has access to the same care.
Why should Beck be fired or suspended for stating his opinion?  That is the beauty of free speech and free choice.  You don't like it, change the channel.
From today’s Washington Post: “…the legislation [the Senate Finance Committee] produces would scramble the reform landscape by introducing policy ideas that have their origins in the political center.  The bill is bound to disappoint liberals. But with prominent GOP backing, it also could prove more difficult for Republicans to reject out of hand…”

This is encouraging news.  Doesn’t sound like the reckless experiment with the American health care system Obama is peddling.  Doesn’t sound like the ‘tyranny of the majority’ jamming something through.  Doesn’t sound like an approach the Republican opposition can get away with opposing.

Nope, it sounds like a sensible approach that is consistent with the political ground that most Americans occupy: the center.  It sounds like an approach that’s more reflective of the concerns and needs of the American political mainstream rather than the extremes at either end.  And that’s a good thing.

It’s good that some improvements in the American health care system may be in the offing.  It’s good that neither the far left nor the far right looks to be able to impose their will on this complex issue.  And it’s good to see pragmatic adults in Congress in the process of leading us towards an outcome that a majority can support.

There’s still a long way to go, but today is a good day.  Sensible, mainstream Americans should enjoy the moment.  Dimwitted lefties can wail and gnash their teeth.

Of course it isn't.  We're talking FOX News here.  If these folks allow Bill'O the clown to spread his bigoted bile across the airwaves, surely Glenn "Tammy Faye" Beck can go into his insane rantings.  Besides, it's what gets FOX such high ratings.  They pretty much just hire a bunch of right-wing media whores like Beck, Bill'O, Hannity, etc. to prostitute themselves for their pimp, Rupert Murdoch.  The sad truth is that none of them, be it on FOX News or AM hate radio whores like Limpballs, actually BELIEVE what they're pushing.  It's just a job for them to make money.  They're merely ideological drug pushers to the right-wing crack addicts who listen to them.  It must truly suck for righties to be so easily manipulated.

http://jawillie.blog.com
Obama is in the process of, to use a baseball analogy, taking a 30-game lead at the All Star break and proceeding to lose the pennant.   This will ultimately be chronicled in the annals of the great choke-artists of all time.
It's really sickening to see how the repugnant ones lie about the public option.  Their latest doozy of a lie is that the public option would mean euthanizing old people.  How many old people on Medicare are being euthanized?  None!  On the other hand we do waste too much money and medical care on breathing cadavers in nursing homes.  While nursing homes have many members who are ambulatory and active there are too many in them that are on the brink of death but can't talk or do anything but breathe and the doctors have to know when to stop wasting their talents and our money on them.

We should look to our Native American heritage to see that when people got old they knew when they became too much of a burden on the rest of the tribe.  They knew when it was time to walk out into the wilderness to meet their fate and do their last duty to their tribe.  Our old people need to know when it's time to do their last duty to the tribe, and when they're not communicative our doctors should know when to stop wasting money on keeping them alive with extreme measures.

Glenn Henpecked is a waste of skin and a sorry excuse for a human being, that's why he's on fox and freaks - the televised mental insitution.  Great description First Read calling his followers hard-core bizarro-land viewers!  Actually an excellent segment on one of the most hated pseudo news personalities that Walter Cronkite would have dissed as the biggest liar of our generations.  Actually saw a spot on The Daily Show where Glenn Henpecked actually had a rare moment sanity and took one of his guests to task for his outrageous statement, I so enjoyed how Jon Stewart said that you know you're way out there when Glenn Henpecked tries to talk you down.

Liberals Draw a Line in the Sand for the Public Option!
The prez is out to take from the rich (whites) and give to the poor (blacks, who won't work).

Distribute the wealth, captain, and watch your frikkin' ship start sinking and you with it.
Glenn Beck last night called the president a racist. how the hell can a man who's mother was white, raised by his white grand mother and grand father, a man who was not raised in the black culture but in the white culture. a man who has always talked about the love he had for his white mother, grandmother and grand father. when his black father tired to tell him what to do and this young boy told him that he was not in his life and he had no right to tell him things that he has no right to say to him. the president is where he is today because of his white mother and grand parents, but according to glenn beck his is a racist.
glenn beck needs to be fired, i know people on this blog and others have accused him of being a racist but never has this been said by a talk show host on national cable TV.

that last night made me sick!!!

Anyone ever wonder why Pat Buchanan isn't called out for his racsist remarks?  Listening to him makes my stomach turn.  He's just as offensive as Beck.
Keywords: chaos, desperation.  As the Mighty-Mouse-Messiah-Pseudo-God crumples to the floor, what crawls out of the greasy empty suit?  A filthy lying rat, but you knew that from the gitgo. Progressively (sarcasm), the big leftist-Marxist machine has been revealed to be nothing but a hastily contrived tinker toy built with sticks of lies, deceptions, fraud, tax evasion, thuggery, tax and spend schemes, race baiting, welfare favoritism, and America bashing. Muy, muy interesante!
FR: "Several of them asked about "rumors,” and they also brought up GOP talking points on "rationing" or the government coming to your house to ask how you want to die (!!!)."
------------------------------------------------

Don't you people realize how stupid this makes you sound?

The Republicans, perhaps bored with their birther baloney, are now telling old folks that Obama will kill them as part of his health reform program. But perhaps after Obama bumps off the old geezers, he processes them into Soylent Green and sells it as a nutritious source of protein, then even the Republicans will praise his fiscal responsibility.

Get real.  Obama can't win this sort of "message war." The Republicans are always going crank out baloney like this, the corporate news media will always sell it eagerly just as FR does, and there will always be a segment of the public gullible enough to buy it.

Agreed!!!!. Obama has lost the Health Care war because he let the GOp DOMINATE this debate with lies and smears. He keeps reaching out to them and they keep saying F you. I am DONE with this. Obama will be toast in 2012 and the GOp will gain seats in House and Senate in 2010 thanks to being Mr Nice Guy.
How about we give the entire First Read Blog to Anita for a whole Day?

She can pretend she's a heavy weight newscaster with narcistic attitudes and tell all the lies she wants for a full day.

Wait. She already does that on First Read, and all day long too.

Well, let's give the ball to Auggie Doggie for a day.
Critical views of Glenn Beck coming from the network which gave the world, Olbermann, Maddow, O'Donnel, etc.. oh that's choice.

Kettle...may I introduce you to the Pot.
FR: "Per the Wall Street Journal, [Napolitano is] “expected to outline Wednesday the Obama administration's domestic approach to preventing terrorist attacks -- a strategy that will rely in large measure on refining and expanding initiatives launched under President George W. Bush.”

OMG, an Obama Democrat building upon the work of George Bush?  Heart be still, I can barely believe what I'm reading.  I hope the lefties on the board weren't drinking their morning coffee when they read that.  Wouldn't want any of these lovable dopes of hope to choke.
The questions the AARP'ers asked yesterday were just the type of questions that NEED to be asked! Those "rumors" and falsehoods are what keep people in fear of change.  I hope President Obama receives more "off-the-wall" questions so that he can set the record straight about the proposed changes in health care.

What did I learn yesterday as I listened to the tele-town hall?  I learned that health care reform includes efforts to encourage EVERYONE to have a living will (not "choose how they want to die.")  I learned that one of the proposals is that health insurance pay for palliative care consults (not "taking away care at the end of life.")

As a registered nurse who works with elderly patients, I fully support and encourage living wills, advance directives and powers of attorney for health care for EVERYONE.  And when all efforts have been exhausted for cure and the family is ready, an opportunity to meet with a palliative care team, and have it PAID FOR, would be a blessing!

Explaining issues like these, having the questions asked, is NOT losing the message war...it's getting the message out!
FR-There was a time when outrageous rants like this would actually cost the ranters their jobs. But not anymore; if anything, it's now encouraged.

Great piece FR.
There used to be a time when everyone showed respect for our President. People of influence wouldn't voice disrespect because of how it might look to our international friends and foes.
They often voiced a difference of opinion on policy or issues but they always did it with respect.

You don’t have to respect the person but you should always respect the office.
FR--Several of them asked about "rumors,” and they also brought up GOP talking points on "rationing" or the government coming to your house to ask how you want to die (!!!).
------------------
This is another sick ploy by the Republican Parties irresponsible brand of politics. Scare old people by telling them that if they support Health Care Reform the same “Government” that backs Medicare will kill you? This is sick and disgusting…talk about low hanging fruit, the Republican Party is that.

--------------------

I wonder if the Republican Party has considered how "history" will record their disapproval of the election of the "First Black President". The disrespect and disregard of the minority citizen’s feelings about the racial statements that they seem to thrive on repeating? To think, they are encouraged to do so by those that employ them.

I say we the people have the power to stop this and personally, I am contacting sources that will show them how a donkey is supposed to act. I am calling for a nation-wide boycott of all entities that are owed by those that "encourage" his disrespectful verbiage.
I heard the statistic 72% of the American people were for healthcare reform. Fifty percent of the Republicans wanted healthcare reform.
------------------------------------------------------
Ron, people are definitely for reform.  But 'reform' comes in a lot of different vehicles.  As a Republican, I'd like to see 'reform' in portability and malpractice, as a start.
Since we're throwing stats around, there's also a poll that says 84% of Americans are happy with their current health care plans.  Is it worth throwing the whole system over for a plan that works well for the vast majority of Americans?
The woman who told Obama she does'nt want socialised healthcare and the said keep your hands off my Social Security shows how ignorant some people are, She obviously watches tooo much Fox News & Glen Beck- The A-hole of the year.
It appears that, as usual, the thugocrats are infighting and finger pointing as incestuous socialists leaving their destroy-America agenda in tatters. The squeals above are highly entertaining. Thanks.
It's the ignorant masses that the gop HAVE MASTERLY manipulated thru fear mongering for years. Universal hlthcare is SOCIALISM! Which is actually what we give our veterans and our politicians and their families. It's good for them but not for over 90% of the population. It's actually what POTUS stated yesterday when a women wrote to him saying she does not want our country to resort to Socialism and keep your hand off my Medicare. I loved watching John Stewart interviewing that swarmy hypocrit Kristol who's thinks that veterans who risk their is/and deserves the best hlthcare given by our government. Everyone else has to pay for it. Too bad if your a teacher, police, garbagemen etc., it's right that we should continue to be a caste system and pray to the god of corporate wlth/welfare. I say hell no! I work in hlthcare and am sick and tired of these greedy self-absorbed hyprocrits destroying this great country by their very well paid career pols which the majority are GOP w/ some Democrats like the Senator from Montana who conviently gets campaign slush fund from Insurance companies.
We Liberals need to send a message to Team Obama that we will not accept anything less than the public option for health care reform.  We need to make sure Team Obama knows that we want what he promised as Candidate Obama, a health care plan as good as his as Senator.  We Liberals need to start making our many voices heard by screaming for our position as loudly as the dopes of nope do theirs.  We need to start sending e-mails out to the traitor Blue Dogs and the White House to make our position known quite clearly.  If they want our votes and money next election cycle then they'd better make us happy by passing health care reform with the public option.  If that means jacking up the taxes of the rich and greedy so be it.  We don't need a new stinking national sales tax to do the job that the rich and greedy can afford so much better as a national sales tax just screws the poor and middle classes way more than the rich and greedy.

The Birther movement reminds me of the John Bircher racists of the 60's.  The Birchers passed on and so will the Birthers.  Stephen Colbert had on Whorely Taitz last night, you know the wacko lawyer, dentist, real estatye agent who can't do anything competently.  I think it's time to ship out this nutty illegal alien back to whatever backwards country she came from - most likely Vulgaria!

I like the new DNC ad supporting the stimulus, it's right on that the repugnant ones broke our economy and now they refuse to help fix it because they only care about their worthless political party of sore losers.  Don't worry fellow Democrats the stimulus is working slowly as intended and it's maximum benefit will be seen next year, just in time for the next election cycle.  Obama smartly knows that people always ask what have you done for me lately and the repugnant ones will only be able to answer that question with "Nothing".

Liberals Draw a Line in the Sand for the Public Option!
We are already compromising on the single payer system that would be the best for everyone. What is the point without the public option? Legislation imposing a few new rules that the health care insurance industry will find ways to get around, no different than the credit card industry? This is human life we are talking about.

What is it going to take for Americans to realize how hoodwinked they are and how they continue to oppose what is in their best interest due to ignorance and fear? I thought we were finally past that. Will they get mad enough to see it when their employer provided policy monthly premium triples along with the deductibles and fees and their salary barely increases. Perhaps when they go to work every day just to pay for health care insurance they will wake up. But it will be too late. This is it. Without the public option it is not reform and if it doesn't happen Obama and the dems are toast.

I can't imagine that anyone thinks it is okay for human beings to die and/or declare bankruptcy because they get sick and can't pay for treatment. How can we go along with spending billions to invade a country that did nothing to us and conduct an occupation while 18,000 human beings die every year due to our system of for-profit health care? Then we balk at the cost of ficing something that never should have been allowed to happen in the fiirst place.

Why do I have to pay for children to be educated because people choose to have children. I chose not to have them. So why am I paying? How is education a right but health care is a privilege?

This is immoral. People don't choose to get sick!

Who are these senators working for anyway? Did everyone see Wendell Potter on Countdown last night? I wrote to every major network and news program last week asking why this guy isn't everywhere telling his story so Americans get the truth about the healthcare insurance industry, thier lobbying efforts and the lies being told and fear tactics being employed via their lackeys the republicans. Hopefully we will be seeing more of him. This guy is telling the truth about the industry and his part in the hoodwinking of America for decades. You can get more info about him here:

DNC ad: “...Tell Republicans leaders to stop playing politics with our economy."

What a complete and total joke.  The fiscal stimulus package was politics, pure and simple.  That bill was crammed with pork and social policy masquerading as stimulus.  And all those jobs that were supposed to be 'created or saved' came down mostly in the 'saved' category in state and local government.  Where's the real jobs that were supposed to be created?  Nowhere in sight, that's where.  And the Dems have the nerve to suggest the Repubs are playing politics with the economy?  What an absolute crock.
FR: "On the Glenn Becks and Howard Beales:"
-------------------------------------------------

Beck wouldn't be getting any criticism from FR for what he says if he were a Republian politician. You people would only opine on whether Republican accusations that the president hates white people was throwing him off his health car message and helping the Repubs score political points for the 2010 elections.
wake up everyone, Paul Stanley is a Tennessee state senator - not a US Senator, he has no impact on Washington what so ever, he did get his start in Bill Frist's Memphis office when fristy was a US Senator.  Yep Bill you are known for the company you keep and ole paul met his first wife (he is already on his 2nd with an affair since 1994 - and there is your sign that something ain't right with this guy)and his second in Bills Memphis office.  Kind of makes you go uhuh, now don't it.
However, Stanley is a mess, should never have been elected, but you know - those rich folks who live in the Germantown area of Memphis (yeah it is a wealthy neighborhood, more millionairs live there per each square foot than live in Hollywood!) should have seen it coming - considering they are all of the same calibur.  Hope it eventually comes home to bite their congresswoman Marsha, marsh, marsha blackburn in the backside - she is quite worthless herself.
Jeff:

Anyone can be a racist for any reason and not even realize it.

But listening to the racial rants of Rev. Wright for 20 years would be one reason I'd agree with Glenn Beck. The prez is not George Bush, unfortunately, who didn't play the race card. Obama thrives on it and is part of the problem, not the cure.
Anita, really-the resignation of a state senator, not of your state, matters how?  But since you're writing about that, why don't you give us the lowdown on Monica Conyers, another elected official?
PRESIDENT IS DOING ALL THAT HE CAN IF THE SO CALLED BLUE DOGS DON'T DO RIGHT BY THE PEOPLE COME 2010 THEY WILL VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE IT WON'T BE THE PRESIDENT FAULT  I WILL GIVE HIM HIS CREDIT. AS FAR AS THE CLOWN BECK  AND FOOL THAT HE IS.THIS GUY THINK HE CAN SAY THE SAME THINGS THAT PALIN SAID AT HER KKK RALLIES TO HER BASE TRUST ME  HANNITY AND THE REST OF THE HATERS TRYED EVERY THING DURING THE GENERAL ELECTION . THE MASSES WHO VOTED FOR THE PRESIDENT DIDN'T LISTEN TO  THEM. WHAT AHOE..BECK SAYS  CALLED HIM AN RACIST HE CALL THE PRESIDENT  THAT BECAUSE WHAT ELSE HE GOT HE IS OUT OF HIS MIND I WATCH THE GUY HE IS COMPLETE CLOWN AND TRUST ME WE SEE HIM FOR WHAT HE IS WHOOPIE CALLED HIM OUT  A MONTH AGO ON HER SHOW FOR LYING HE  WAS A PUNK.
A couple of thoughts:

-too bad we can't have a real teachable moment with not only the Cambridge Event but also with the dangers of prescription drug addiction.  Rush could really bring this to the forefront and do a lot of good. (for a change)

-Being in the health insurance industry, I receive many companies messages daily on HCR issues, besides all the e-mails highlighting Republican talking points. Some very disturbing, and just plain false information.  Where are the e-mails telling the positives about HCR?? If our President used the internet so wisely to get elected, why can't it be used for HCR, too??
Is Glenn Beck insane or an idiot?  Wait, he can be both!  Thank you, FR for pointing out that we now allow entertainers and paid clowns to dictate press coverage and choose the priority stories of the day.  As tempting as it is to go for ratings it is imperative that real journalists not play into this.  In the end it is a trend that won't last forever--but the destructive effects on the journalistic profession will last for many years.
