*** Back to Nov. 3, 2008: Perhaps the most striking observation from the new NBC/WSJ poll is how Barack Obama's standing has returned to where it was right before Election Night. His job-approval rating has dropped to 53%, which just happens to be the percentage of the popular vote he won in November. His approval among independents and Republicans is, respectively, 49% and 16%, which is fairly close to his exit-poll scores with these groups. And Obama's fav/unfav in our poll is 55%-34, which is almost identical to his fav/unfav in our mid-October 2008 NBC/WSJ poll. How did we return back to 2008? One obvious explanation is the health-care debate, which has turned into a Democrat-vs.-Republican fight. In fact, the 16% of Republicans approving of Obama’s job is a five-point decline from our June survey and a nine-point one since April. NBC/WSJ co-pollster Bill McInturff (R) says Obama had been flying above the partisan fray, but he’s now come back down to earth. “The question I asked back in February was: When does political gravity take hold? The answer is in this survey. It is happening now.”

Video: MSNBC’s Carlos Watson and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., discuss whether the Blue Dog Democrats and Republicans can work together to fight President Barack Obama’s health care plans.

*** Health care & stimulus numbers slipping: Speaking of health care, our poll also shows that the more Obama has campaigned on the issue, the worse his numbers have become. In it, 42% now say that the president’s plan is a bad idea, which is a 10-point increase since last month; only 36% say it’s a good idea. In addition, 39% -- a plurality -- believe that Obama’s plan would result in the quality of their health care getting worse, which is a 15-point jump since April. And just 41% approve of the president’s job on health care, which is nearly identical to Bill Clinton’s scores from 1994, when he failed to get Congress to pass health reform. (Just asking, but what happens to Obama's health numbers this fall, when there might be a shortage -- and rationing! -- of swine-flu shots?) A final note about health care: Support for a public insurance option decreases (to 46%-44%) when you take out the word “choice” from last month’s survey. What’s more, health care isn’t the only domestic priority for Obama that has become less popular. According to the poll, 43% now believe the stimulus was a bad idea, which is up 16 points since January. Indeed, the NBC/WSJ survey finds that the public’s top concern about Obama’s young presidency is that he has spent too much money.

*** The GOP’s new edge on the deficit/controlling spending: How concerned is the public with spending? Concerned enough that the GOP now has a six-point advantage over the Democrats on which party do you trust more on reducing the deficit -- which is the first time Republicans have led on this question since 1997 (!!!). Moreover, the GOP now has advantages over the Democrats on controlling government spending and taxes. And that could make Obama’s job to sell a health-care bill (and the tax increases that would pay for it) more difficult. Still, the Democratic Party maintains its edge over the GOP on health care, energy, getting the country out of recession, and the economy, although those advantages are smaller than they were a year ago. Overall, the Democratic Party’s fav/unfav rating is 42%-37%, while the GOP’s is 28%-41%.

*** 1994 or 1982? Looking ahead to 2010, one other thing that has declined for Democrats is their edge in the generic ballot. According to our new poll, Americans prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress over a GOP-controlled one, 46%-39%. But that seven-point advantage for Democrats is their smallest edge here since April 2006. Much of the increase comes from white men and white women. While a seven-point Dem advantage doesn’t suggest a change in power like we saw in 1994, NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) says next year’s midterms could look a lot like 1982, when the Democratic Party picked up seats after Ronald Reagan’s first two years in office. “To me, 2010 is looking to be much like 1982,” he said. “It’s going to be a bad year for the incumbent party. It may not affect the president as much as it will affect the party and the makeup of the Congress.” Another thing to note from the poll: The GOP has increased its strength in the South, and the regional splits between the parties look like they did pre-Katrina.

Video: MSNBC political analyst Laura Flanders talks about the GOP’s continued criticism of the stimulus despite the Federal Reserve’s report that most of its 12 regions have either stabilized economically or have seen a leveling off in the pace of the economic decline.

*** Biden, Pelosi, Romney, Clinton, and Palin: Despite the decline in his numbers, Obama (with a 55%-34% fav/unfav) is still the most popular politician measured in our poll. Vice President Biden’s score is 38%-36% (reflecting the fact that when he gets into the news, it’s usually because he did or said something wrong); House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s is 25%-44%, Mitt Romney’s is 28%-20% (look what happens when you stay out of the news!); Hillary Clinton’s is 53%-31%; and Sarah Palin’s is 32%-43%. Looking at Palin and 2012, the poll shows that a whopping 67% of the public -- and 43% of Republicans -- say they would NOT like to see her as president someday. By comparison, 50% of Americans -- and 33% of Republicans -- say they don’t want to see Romney become president.

*** Focus group time: As Peter Hart notes, poll numbers alone don’t always tell you the entire story, however. And last night, he conducted a focus group with 12 independent voters in Towson, MD (outside of Baltimore) that one of your First Read authors attended. Seven of these indies voted for Obama last year, four voted for McCain, and one voted for Nader. We’ll have more on this focus group in tomorrow’s First Thoughts, but here are the quick highlights: Despite the drop in Obama’s poll numbers, these participants -- even those who voted for McCain -- expressed hope and some positive feelings for the president. Yet they also expressed concern about the speed at which the president was moving on issues, particularly health care. Also, Michelle Obama won rave reviews from the participants, while Biden didn’t.

Video: Many conservatives feel health care proposals are being rushed and were hoping Blue Dog Democrats would take their side. Rep. Mike Pence, D-Ind., discusses whether the Blue Dogs’ decision to negotiate with Democratic leaders may hurt the prospect of a bipartisan health care bill.

*** The Great American Health Care Fight: Blue Dogs struck a deal with House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman yesterday, but the agreement has angered liberals… NBC’s Ken Strickland reports that although Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has called for the Senate Finance Committee to complete its bill before the August recess, two GOP negotiators (Grassley and Enzi) suggested that it probably won’t happen… And finally, a last word about the Blue Dogs: Our new NBC/WSJ poll measured that group (white Democrats who aren’t liberals), and found that while they overwhelmingly approve of Obama’s job, they agree with him less on the issues. Just 46% of them think he’s taking the country in the right direction, and only 41% think his stimulus package was a good idea. And you wonder why these Blue Dog congressmen are reluctant on health care…

Video: Why no Boston beers or microbrews for today's beer summit? NBC's Domenico Montanaro previews Obama's day.

*** Obama’s day: At 3:00 pm ET today, Obama meets with Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. And then three hours later comes his much-anticipated beer with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge police officer James Crowley. There will be a pool spray of the men gathering.

*** Pawlenty’s day: Finally today, retiring Minnesota Gov. (and potential 2012 candidate) Tim Pawlenty addresses the Republican National Committee’s meeting in San Diego today. Per a source close to Pawlenty, the governor will introduce himself and lay out the case why Obama’s policies are taking the country in the wrong direction. Talking about the budget, Pawlenty will emphasize the fact that he balanced the budget every year (which almost all governors have to do). On health care, he will criticize Obama’s plan, saying it will “replace independence with dependence and increase costs." And on foreign policy, he will mention that he has just returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse:

No, I’m not talking about war, famine, pestilence and death.  I’m talking about Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Lou Dobbs and Pat Buchanan.  Is this what cable news has become: A forum for prejudice, lies, hatred?

For those who know history, in Germany after WWI, economic depression and fear gripped the country.  Conservative elements took control of the government. Lies were allowed to stand as truth.  Leaders played on peoples’ prejudice and scapegoated Jews.  The country marched lock-step with their leader. No one would speak out against the dictator.

And today we say, “Never again shall we allow hatred to dominate our national thinking.  Yet there it is.  Rush Limbaugh spewing hatred, Glen Beck projecting his own prejudice, Lou Dobbs promoting birthers and deathers (all lies), Pat Buchanan spewing racism.  So who is accountable for this growing cancer that incites right-wing nuts to cling to their guns, go underground, to someday be potential domestic terrorists?

I hold Murdock, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC responsible.  Thus far, to my knowledge, no network has insisted that this crap be stopped.  Cloaked under the heading of “News” these commentators, under contract are allowed to spread bigotry and lies.

And the rest of us, what are our responsibilities?  We cannot be afraid and allow lies to stand as truth. There are many moderate Republicans who no longer can identify with this right-wing craziness and would like to have their party back.  We need to return to a two party system whereby ideology takes a backseat to putting the American people first.

I’m less troubled about war, famine, pestilence, and death than I am about hatred, lies, prejudice, and racism. We cannot allow hatred to dominate our national thinking.
Dear GOP:

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.  Helen Keller
____________

It’s too bad you’re not fit to find the time or inclination to do the things you are entrusted to do. Work for the American people. I guess you’ve decided to continue to take your welfare check and health care, yet do nothing for the American people. Just say no. Right? No health care. What about the families who are losing their jobs, with children? How many more generations do you intend to do nothing, yet enjoy your own health care?

The Democrats will get this done. President Obama will get this done. Without you.

Never in my life have I ever seen such incompetence from grown up adults. And yet we the taxpayers still pay them. With benefits.
It’s refreshing to see the Ditzy Diva’s poll number continue to TANK including members of her own party who think she has no business near the WH!

Could it be the ‘bloom’ has worn off their Republican’t rose?  LOL

According to the ‘poll numbers’ the fear & smear machine appears to be quite effective! Typical but not unexpected!  That’s how they ruled for the last 8 years… why would they change their ‘sheets’ now?

Liberals… Time to push back twice as hard!

Leftover’s…

If these bills are such a disaster as you claim, then please explain to us WHY the GEENOPEE finds it necessary to continue to send the ‘chain e-mails’ filled with BOLD faced lies & scare tactics
-----------------------------------------------------
If the GOP is as irrelevant and useless and stupid as you incessantly claim, then who would believe them anyway?
Elizabeth, Short Pump VA (Sent Wednesday, July 29, 2009 12:57 PM)

Nice try there Lizzy…

First off you didn’t answer the question… Not that I would have expected anything different than the same old tired GEENOPEE ‘spin’!

And as for who would ‘believe them anyway’… if I’m not mistaken you’re the one Elizabeth who comes on here to tout that 57 million people voted for Gidget & the Geezer last November.

Keep in mind though that these are the SAME people that would’ve voted for a TURNIP as long as is had an (R) after its name!

Care to take another ‘shot’ at answering WHY it is that the party of male stale & pale has to resort to BOLD FACED lies & scare tactics rather than presenting the truth & facts regarding HCR?

I’m curious as to WHY if their so RIGHT about their convictions do they have to stoop so low to prove their point!

Inquiring minds want to know!

“Nit-Picking’ is one of the FEW thing’s Republican’ts are good at!

They sure suck at governing!

Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL: '...Pass HCR NOW!!!  CO-OP = COPOUT! ...'

It's TRUE, Feisty
WHY DOESN'T OBAMA SAY THAT ??
MSierra, SF (Sent Wednesday, July 29, 2009 1:24 PM)

Thanks for the shout out MSierra!

I’m starting to wonder the same thing. All I know is during the primaries & then the general there were days where I would come home & think he should get out there and throw a punch or two… and yet look at the wonderful outcome :0)

I believe deeply he knows EXACTLY what he’s doing… so far he has the MSM running around in circles. And the opposition self destructing before our very eyes without having to raise a finger.

My money’s on the President!  When this MSM fed HCR drama comes to a conclusion we will have REAL reform WITH a public option!

Keep the faith!

And to the FR Crew… what the heck is going on around here?  You’ve got additional help and yet essentially shut down the site at noon yesterday.
Speaking of Sarah Failin...

While delivering one of her world famous 'word salads' I couldn't help but notice it looked like she was wearing a head of cabbage as a corsage!

For some reason cole slaw came to mind...

Fashion tip to the Ditzy Diva... corsages (or in your case the whole bouquet) are so YESTERDAY there darlin!
The Ed Show— Holding Lawmakers Accountable

Ed Schultz had a great show on yesterday evening. I appreciate the fact that he has taken the no holes barred approach concerning the kick backs that our elected officials are taking. They are willing to sell us down the toilet, offer us crap, while they are receiving platinum benefits on our dime.

It has to stop and we must not give up the fight. It’s alright to feel discouraged, but it’s not alright to allow our selves to become defeated. We have the power and the power is in the vote.  Forget the single payer option; the single payer option does not allow competition in the market, besides that; it will put a lot of people out of work.

Public option is the best way to go. With public option, it allows competition. Insurance companies are allowed to compete for our business in order to drive the cost down this is logical. I implore everyone to take a step back and think about the public option plan.

Co-op is a no go, no way plan to present to the public. It‘s just plain cheesy. We live in the richest country in this world and millions in this country are dying daily due to lack of insurance coverage, while insurance companies rack in record profits and elected lawmakers, line their coffers. Various insurance companies spent a total $133 million dollars last month lobbying lawmakers to kill Health Care Reform. We want HCR NOW!! Or you people will go home next election.

Senior’s being put to death—Virginia Foxx need’s her ass whipped for telling the lie that “government” want to put senior to death with HCR. It is shameful and she is nothing more than a terrorist….in fact the republican party that’s spreading these lies are considered to be terrorist in my book. They are hell bent on destroying this nation…it makes the terrorist.

Oreo Cookie—Rush Limbaugh and company, there are too many of us Oreo’s to fear being picked up by the government. Rush…the government is the people…Rush, you people are the ones that discriminate against us Oreo’s …as you call us.

Let’s keep up the fight folks! We have the power in our vote to help make the Change. HCR NOW!! Public option NOW!!

Okay, so I saw Chuck on Nightly News and Hardball where he discussed the results of this polling. Can Chuck please explain why he never mentioned the following question and response during those broadcasts or above. I swear I felt like there was a general opposition to health care insurance reform during the broadcast and I found it to be very disturbing. When I saw the following question and response on Countdown and on a morning program today I felt my fears were justified. Why wouldn't Chuck mention this during Nightly News or above when he discussed the polling results extensively. He basically focused completely on the negative results but as this following question indicates, most people are uninformed and fearful because when they understand what the actual changes will be they are much more inclined to support health care insurance reform. Imagine if they knew all the details of the plans.

NBC/WSJ Poll Question and Response
July 2009
Now I am going to tell you more about the health care plan that President Obama supports and please tell me whether you would favor or oppose it.

The plan requires that health insurance companies cover people with pre-existing medical conditions. It also requires all but the smallest employers to provide health coverage for their employees, or pay a percentage of their payroll to help fund coverage for the uninsured. Families and individuals with lower- and middle-incomes would receive tax credits to help them afford insurance coverage. Some of the funding for this plan would come from raising taxes on wealthier Americans.

Do you favor or oppose this plan?
Favor 56
Oppose 38

Nightly News is where many Americans get their information. How could Chuck not mention this? Why all this focus on the negative? Could it be that no one really cares that 18,000 Americans are dying every year because they can't pay for medical treatment? Is the news media, like the health care insurance industry, only interested in making profits no matter what the cost, including human life?
“7/29/09 New jobless claims rise more than expected: The Labor Department said new claims for unemployment aid increased by 25,000 to a seasonally adjusted 584,000. That's above analysts' estimates of 570,000. 6.2 million are currently unemployed.
A department analyst said the increase comes after claims were artificially depressed earlier this month by the timing of temporary auto factory shutdowns, which happened earlier this year than in most years.”

“President Obama and the first family will rent a house on Martha's Vineyard for their vacation during the last week of August. Though the cost of the vacation spot has not been disclosed, island rentals comparable to the farm rent for between $35,000 to $50,000 per week, according to the Vineyard Gazette newspaper.”

Unemployment is rising, the economy is in shambles and Obama takes ANOTHER vacation at a cost that could support an entire family for a year. So much for the millionaire Democrats and their feigned concern for the poor and middle class. This makes what- the third or fourth vacation Obama has taken since the inauguration? Are they bringing their live in mother-in-law and the illegal alien aunt from Kenya?
The president obviously hasn't done a good enough job selling his agenda to the public. The GOP is winning with nothing right now...

Can't help but think the blatantly anti-Obama press is contributing to this...

http://www.political-buzz.com/
The big deal today is that Barack Obama's doctor panned his health care reform bill. For those of you who live on the left coast, that means Dr. David Scheiner said it WON'T WORK and would even set the medial profession back. He also said the cost was outrageous.

Sometimes I think that Obie knows this and wants America to step backwards. I just don't think he's pro-America.

Americans were stupid enough to elect him and he probably thinks they are stupid enough, the congress and senate included, to fall for some irrational health reform bill. Again, they didn't read the stimulus and passed it so how dumb are they? And they won't have a job in 2010.
By the time the next presidential campaign rolls around, the economy will be in full swing recovery, with unemployment, the lagging indicator, finally coming down. We will be out of Iraq, and hopefully, winding down Afghanistan.  Healthcare Reform will be showing progress, and the return of economic growth will reduce our defecit. I see no trouble for Obama and the Dems when the right time to take a poll - election day - comes around.
just sent my 5th response to the Obama administrations emails. (you'll get these weekly if you donated to the campaign)

No public option, no donation...period
If we get enough people to do this, I believe we will see a shift in his stance.

pass it on.
You Guys are part of the problem you talking about nonsense all day every day wasting our time and the country future. hope you realize how bad of impact you have in all American instead of spending time talking and discussing what is the best option for health care for American we taking how much Obama is popular or not that is why he is loosing his massage because of you he send his message through the Media the Stupid Media unfortunately that are Hanged on the trivial. End up misleading the nation
Too bad really too bad that include all.
Hope you realize how bad is your Impact and how good you could do and you do not
All politicans are down in the polls, because all citizens are frustrated and want a Quick-fix, and that is impossible.  This country is bancrupt & we know that happened on Bush's watch & it took him 8 years to dig the hole we are in now; & it will take longer than 6 months of Obama to help the situation.
President Obama's poll numbers are slipping on the health care issue because he has been too wishy washy about his support for his campaign promise of a public option.  That has caused Liberals who would normally be supportive to be less supportive as we see him not doing what he promised us he would.  President Obama needs to be more forceful in his support for the public option and then his polling will improve as Liberals come back to supporting him.  He needs to stop being wishy washy about the public option and come out and forcefully declare that he will veto any bill without the public option.

"Let's not let the perfect be the enemy of the good
I Don't like the idea of Co-ops, either
But, let's not scuttle the President's plans"
MSierra, SF
Hey MSierra, SF - The perfect would be Universal Health Care and the Good is the Public Option.  If you don't like the Co-op copout then fight it.  The President's Plan was the Public Option and we need to fight for it or we get screwed by big medical who doesn't want it.  I'm sick and tired of seeing the Blue Dogs and repugnant ones ruin every piece of legislation, like turning Cap and Trade into capitalist mush as well as the Cash for Clunkers program that didn't force enough of an increase in gas mileage efficiency.  Where are your San Francisco values?  Aren't you going to fight for them or are you just going to wimp out and let the minority whiners get the better of us?

Speaking of polling I got a robo call from my House REpresentative Sam Farr last night telling me I missed his tele conference but to drop by his website and give him my thoughts.  I just love invitations like that.  Sam's a good guy who supports Nancy Pelosi but I think I'll go over and make sure he knows I support the public option for health care even though I know he'll already vote that way.

Support Health Care Reform with the Public Option!
I think that the current poll numbers for President Obama are just great!

Why you ask?

- Because there has been a $1.5 million dollar a day effort to confuse the American public about health insurance reform, primarily featuring LIES about the plan that nobody with a microphone feels compelled to correct.

The point is to make Americans feel uneasy and confused, and with a media corp that gets oh so BORED with policy, it is no surprise that it is working. Always does.

- Because the “news” media has trumpeted all negative news about health care, especially anything from the CBO, but ignored all positive news for health care, like the CBO finding that a public health option WILL NOT destroy the private insurance industry.

I mean, we just had two MAJOR break throughs in the House and the Senate, but both of those will take a back seat to these poll numbers that don't really tell us anything we didn't already know.

- Because the “news” media has given a megaphone and a platform to anyone who opposes the President, no matter how baseless and unreasonable the critique.

I mean we are actually spending DAYS discussing the President’s citizenship status – I’m not making that up.

- Because the ”news” media consistently reports what “Republicans say” without the added context of whether it is true or not.

- Because despite the “creative framing” of poll numbers, the simple fact is that the country is evenly divided on whether the NUMEROUS health care proposals they are hearing would be good for them(none of which is final), and the media conveniently ignores the significant percentage that are still UNDECIDED.

And in spite of it all, a MAJORITY of Americans APPROVE of the way the President is doing his job.

All things considered, and factoring in the 24/7 constant drum beat of fear and ignorance that the American people have been subjected to, I think the President’s poll numbers are amazingly good.

P.S. Despite all the political pundits focus on poll numbers, the reason we elect our Congressional representatives and Presidents is to LEAD the country.

So if in our current political culture, the only way to lead is to face the fear and smear brigade, then I say so be it. I’d rather the President DO something than continue to kick the can down the road to save his own a$$. But that’s just me.

P.S.S.  Just yesterday First Read told us that the President’s problem was that he didn’t have a plan to sell, and the VERY NEXT DAY the talking point is “America doesn’t like the President’s plan!”  Which is it Chuck? lol

It makes perfect sense for the Obama poll numbers to return to election night numbers.  From Nov through spring, everyone of all parties was excited at the prospect of Bush/Cheney leaving the White House and had outrageous optimism that Pres Obama could turn things around in a couple weeks.  We knew that it wouldn't happen but after 8 years of Bush, the American people were Bushed.

Didn't seen any comments yesterday about democrats forcing the republicans, especially those who refused to state that Pres Obama was born in the USA, to vote yea or nay on a resolution which included a statement that he was.  I'm still smiling because the dems outsmarted the repubs by taking the birther issue and tossing in their faces--put up or shut up.

The poll about the republicans being trusted more than democrats on deficit spending is beyond my comprehension.  How can anyone believe that when it was the GOP who spent us into oblivion for 8 years?  The only reason is the public listens to the soundbites of conservatives and doesn't factor in that the GOP is anything but fiscally conservative.  Glad the DNC is hitting back with ads pointing out who broke the economy and who is doing nothing.  Add another ad please DNC, one reminding people that 90% of the deficit belongs to republicans.  Of course, some of that is because the dems are working hard in Congress while the repubs prefer to chatter and obstruct at the microphone claiming no seat at the table.

The media seems focused on the wrong poll number regarding health care.  As noted on MSNBC last night, when details of Obama's goals were explained, the approval number on health care went to 56%.  OK, media, quit playing games.  This is half why the GOP is gaining ground on HCR, as Howard Dean and Sen Sherrod Brown pointed out--the media takes the negatives coming from Congress and the GOP and runs with it.  The positives are ignored.

You know, I find it troubling that the lady who made the 911 call just in case it was a burglary has been subjected to harrassing phone calls.  No matter which side you're on regarding Gates and Crowley, everyone should realize that she was watching out for her neighbors.

Hope my posting luck improves this morning.  Wrote plenty but wasted my time the last few days.
Chuck,

Love your reporting and followed your polling/interpretations with great, great interest during the election. However, isn't this the time to lead instead of win a popularity contest?

It seems to me that "disapproving" of the President's plan could be cutting both ways? There are many of us who are very disappointed that his proposals are not going far enough.

Isn't the likely reality that the quality of our health care (all of us, except the very well-off)will continue to diminish rapidly, unless we do something to change the trajectory we are on now? If you poll voters beliefs around those issues: what is realistic to expect of future quality, accessibility and cost, aren't these the real issues that should help drive decision making as to what is in the best interest of the American people??
Unemployment is rising, the economy is in shambles and Obama takes ANOTHER vacation

This makes what- the third or fourth vacation Obama has taken since the inauguration?

________________________________

Now this is RICH coming from a certified card carrying member of the Party of NO!

If I’m not mistaken the last guy in the WH (you know your boy ‘W’) spent MORE time on vacations than he did doing the JOB he was elected to do!

Mr. Peteroleum would you please share with us when & where the President went on all these imaginary vacations you claim?

Try thinking for a change before you share your hallucinations with us!

ALL of the Dem approval numbers are falling, for Pelosi, for Obama, for Healthcare.

Indeed Obama is overexposed. It's all about him and we know that. He is failing and falling all over himself. Town Hall meetings are turning into Tea Parties.

Now we have a beer fest at the White House to settle a local police dispute. I honestly think Officer Crowley should open up on both of them. Who the hell do they think they are? A Prof and a Prez vs. a Cambridge Police Officer. They are taken back because the white guy arrested the black guy.

Get a grip Obama. We all know alcohol settles everything. Cheers.
President Obama is back where he began because many Americans expected that he would flip a switch and everything would be fixed.  He's back where he was because republicans have -- disappointingly -- resorted to hauling out the same old cynical tricks that they have used to grasp and hold power for the past 30 years, a streak broken only twice, and both times only when reality finally bit.  He's back where he was because the damage done in those past 30 years is so deep that band-aids won't fix it, and fundamentalist republican zealots won't allow the administration of anti-biotics.  He's back where he was because -- like it or not -- projection and fear and negativism are tactics that always work on the small-minded.  He's back where he was because he's being pushed back, and many who voted for him, but lack the courage of their espoused convictions, have  already abandoned their positions at HIS back.  He's back where he was because reporting sensational news is more fun -- and lucrative -- that reporting the real news and doing real analysis.  It's a lot easier from the cheap seats, isn't it?
FR-- And then three hours later comes his much-anticipated beer with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge police officer James Crowley. There will be a pool spray of the men gathering.

The media has played this incident for all it's worth and not for the good either. I appreciated First Reads response on yesterday regarding Becks remarks. However, it still a band-aid as far as I'm concern, it can be better and more positive. A photo-op is all that is needed, given the reaction, parsing and various talk shows that have used this incident to boost ratings by encouraging negative thoughts.

The President is the President of all people in this Nation and not just one ethnicity, to suggest he not address a subject that has been placed in the closet far too long and take the "usual" approach that others have taken over the years...the "safe approach" is cowardly. He said and did the right thing and I respect him more for speaking from his heart.
it has nothing to do with republican or democrat.. it is about a president who is selling us down the river.  wake up!!
What is striking to me is the current lot of Repukes claim the Dems are taking the counhtry in the wrong direction but when they (Repukes) had the helm they drove it into the ditch! So what gives?  Why now, why did they not right the ship when they were at the helm?  Why did people not speak up?  So many questions from these people yet NO new ideas only retreads!  This is why we need a third party, to break the stalemate of the 2 party system that continues to play the school yard tactics of haha I have something and you don't crap!
Ron in Indiana, it sounds like you are promoting censorship regarding "not allowing" certain newsfolk to spread hatred and lies.  If you don't like those news stations or what their hosts say then you are free to change the channel.  That's one of the things I love about this country and the freedoms we have.  Please don't condone taking that away.
It's so nice to see how unfavorable Quitter Palin is with the American public.  Real Americans don't like quitters and she's a quitter to wimpy to stay in office.  Actually what's funny is that yesterday I got a mailer from Robert F. Kennedy on saving the polar bears featuring the Wicked Wasilla Witch who wants to detroy polar bears.  Plus I saw an ad on tv about climate change that featured the Wasilla Hillbilly as the villain who wants to destroy our planet by allowing global warming to get worse.  While she may excite her clueless base to support her and her clueless causes she also excites the Liberal base to donate money and sign petitions to fight against what she stands for.

Too many Americans have forgtotten that it's been the repugnant ones who have run up our Reagan, Bush, Bush national debt from $1 trillion to over $10 trillion the past 29 years.  Only Bill Clinton, a Democrat, ever balanced the budget in recent history of the past about 50 years.  President Obama had to borrow significantly in order to drag us out of the Bush Depression and yes the stimulus is working slowly but surely and the repugnant ones will have egg all over their faces next year as they learn they once again declared premature victory.

I'm glad that Ed Schultz is being so forceful in supporting the public option for health care reform.  I love the way he went after Glenn Henpecked yesterday in his Op Ed segment.  We need to reject and denounce this worthless racist and work to send him back to radio.  But then as long as he's on fox and freaks he's going to turn more rational Americans off to fox and freaks.  Glenn is clearly a racist with a long standiong hatred of blacks.  His assertion that Barack has a long standing hatred of white people is totally bogus since Barack was raised by a White Mother and White Grandparents.

In Obama We Trust!
It appears all of the MNSBC Message Boards have closed. I'll miss the baseball board, since we're in the middle of a baseball season and the trading deadline just a little over 24 hours away.

Glad to see the political board shut down though.

"Okay, so I saw Chuck on Nightly News and Hardball where he discussed the results of this polling. Can Chuck please explain why he never mentioned the following question and response during those broadcasts or above. . .

Why all this focus on the negative?  . . . Is the news media, like the health care insurance industry, only interested in making profits no matter what the cost, including human life?

GS, PA

********************************************
Bravo GS!

This one question and answer really sums it all up - the only hope that opponents of reforming the way health insurance companies are abusing the American people for a profit have is to CONFUSE and SCARE the American people.

Knowledge is power, but the media is "too bored" to do their damn jobs and explain what is being proposed and debunk the lies.

It's more fun to stir up sh!t and report that it stinks.

GS, PA:

The media is a huge part of the problem as to why the President's message on HC reform is getting lost in the news. They choose to play up the right wing space cadets who just disembarked from Starship Wackadoodle. The Rethugs and terrorist like Beck, Buchanan, O'Reiley and the like get spout their lies unchallenged by the media.

The President has a huge disadvantage with the media making his every word a potential landmine. But I have hope and trust that he will not let us down. He hasn't yet.  Just 6 mos into his administration, he has done more to advance this country and its citizens than the previous Pres did over 8 yrs. President Obama is doing a wonderful job!
According to the poll, 43% now believe the stimulus was a bad idea, which is up 16 points since January. Indeed, the NBC/WSJ survey finds that the public’s top concern about Obama’s young presidency is that he has spent too much money.

******************************

This above and other anti-ideas are all Republican talking points and scare tactics.

And all of you including the naysayers know exactly what is going and how the stimulus is supposed to work.

So why can't we wise up and be the smart Americans we are and start being supportive and not allow ourselves to be brain-washed by a dumb set of scare mongers.

Enough already!!!

And Chuckie T and all of you—stop aiding the naysayers. You are not helping the situation.
If I’m not mistaken the last guy in the WH (you know your boy ‘W’) spent MORE time on vacations than he did doing the JOB he was elected to do!

Mr. Peteroleum would you please share with us when & where the President went on all these imaginary vacations you claim?

You used to be interesting and witty, what happened?
Moon Dawg (Sent Thursday, July 30, 2009 9:32 AM)
Americans were stupid enough to elect him and he probably thinks they are stupid enough, the congress and senate included, to fall for some irrational health reform bill. Again, they didn't read the stimulus and passed it so how dumb are they? And they won't have a job in 2010.

Moon Dawg

There you go again jumping out of your and trying to be intelligent. americans were smat enough to not elect McCain and failing palin.

Sarah Palin needs a compass
Disturbance is her opus
She is failing on the pampas
On the field
Without a compass
She can’t smile on her rumpus
‘cause  she can’t see Russia
She aims to yield
Greed
Is her multipurpose
She needs not an usher
To rush her
Her digits
They fidget for money and fame
The media she will blame
For her no aim
Failing Palin is so dumb
Ditch the bum!

When was the last time a Republican President had a balanced budget. Even with a Republican controlled Congress that hasn't happened in a very long time, if ever. So for Pawlenty to crticizes someone else is just plain stupid. They need to get their own act together before dissing someone else's act.

He who dwelleth in a house of glass is cautiioned not to toss rocks.
How pathetic that now polls show that the public now seem to trust the same political party who preached  fiscal conservatism but squandered Clinton's surplus, reiterated over and over going back to Reagan and the Dick that Americans do not care about deficits because lets face it Americans love to rack up credit card debts. The GOP the same political party that when they are in complete control cut taxes for the wltiest and cut services for the middle class but now are yelling the loudest against Obama alledging he's making our hlthcare system socialism because they are hammered over the head w/ it everyday.  It's like Iraq has WMD'S. It always seems to come down to the misinformed and ignorant masses who are totally clueless like " I do not know who lives in 1600 Pennslyvania Ave" or "How many stars on on the U.S. flags" DUH! It's just these idiots that the lying, corrupt and hypocrits the GOP and these so-called Blue Dogs manipulate so easily to get their agenda through at any cost. Status quo wins out. LIBERAL PROGRESSIVES NEED TO FIGHT BACK!
What a dumb country!  What uninformed citizentry!People believe that in (7) months that ONE man can change all the crap that went on for eight years that NOT any of you naysayers said a thing about.  If I were him I would say to hell with all of you!  You are arrogant without the benefit of knowledge, ungrateful and hypocrits?  I am fed up with the lot of you.  You do not deserve anyone who cares about your plight.  What you DO deserve are the people who hve lied to you all along.  Your lives remain the same yet you fall for their trash talk everytime.  Who is benefitting from this?  NOT you.  They are getting more money from special interests, lobbyists, like pigs feeding at the trough.  What is so gross is that You think these peopel actually care about you.  So go on living in ignorance.  No wonder this country is so low down on the scale of other western countries in education, life span, etc.  YOU are livng proof of that.  THIS president cares and NONE of you deserve it.
A bunch of morons post here, count me in.
FR: "And you wonder why these Blue Dog congressmen are reluctant on health care…"
-----------------------------------------

No, I don't. First Read, toeing the corporate media line, won't report on the fact that the health insurance industry is pouring $1.4 million per DAY into defeating health care reform. A lot of that money is going into the pockets of "blue dog" Democrats while the rest goes toward misleading TV commercials.

FR: "And just 41% approve of the president’s job on health care, which is nearly identical to Bill Clinton’s scores from 1994, when he failed to get Congress to pass health reform."
-------------------------------------------

Yes, and remember that what we got from the Republicans after they defeated Clinton's attempts: the health care mess that we have today.

The Repubs are always hyping isolated problems in countries with decent health care coverage like Canada. What the Democrats should continue to point out is the not-so-isolated incidents like the case in which a woman who died in a pool of her own vomit on the floor of an emergency room after she had been left lying there for hours. That should be the symbol of the "BushCare" health system we got after Clinton's failure and that will continue if Obama fails, too.
How concerned is the public with spending? Concerned enough that the GOP now has a six-point advantage over the Democrats on which party do you trust more on reducing the deficit -- which is the first time Republicans have led on this question since 1997 (!!!). Moreover, the GOP now has advantages over the Democrats on controlling government spending and taxes.

************************

IT IS ALL TALK AND NO DO!! Republicans cannot govern. They only talk a good game and we Americans are stupid enoough to fall for it.!

And we have paid the price. Look at the mess the GOP has created. Deal with facts guys!!!
Good bit about the focus group that still has positive feelings for Barack and way super positive feelings for Michelle.  Poor Joe Biden is thought of as the Rodney Dangerfield of the administration as he gets no respect.  He deserves a lot more respect than Marquis de Sade Cheney who tried to become our dictator as he broke national and international laws to try to keep the repugnant ones in control of government for generations.  Hey Tricky Dick 2 how's that generational control of the government working out for you and your minority party of sore losers?  Snicker Snicker!

Liberals it's time to draw a line in the sand on supporting the public option for health care reform.  Time for us Liberals to stand up and declare any health care reform DOA if it does not contain a public option.  It's what a majority of the people want and we need to step up and outshout the jerky repugnant ones who whine against it.  We need to send the Blue Dogs a clear message that they are not the tail that will wag the whole donkey.  We need to show Barack that we have his back on the public option so he will go out and become more forceful in his support of the public option.  Once Barack becomes very forceful and consistent in supporting the public option the Blue Dogs will have to put their tails between their legs and they will be forced to stop fooling around trying to mollify the dopes of nope.

Isn't it funny how the House got a bill passed without a single no vote that Hawaii is the official legal birthplace of President Obama?  Even that clueless Bachmann Moron Overdrive voted for the bill even though she's on of those creepy Birthers.  I'm glad the Birthers came along as it shows how out of touch with reality the base base of the repugnant ones party is.  They just give us Liberals another reason to stand up and fight the crazies while providing Liberal comedians with more fodder to ridicule the dopes of nope with.  Best thing the Bierthers could do for their party is to shut up and fade away but they're too stupid to do that.

Draw a Line in the Sand for the Public Option!
"Ron Indiana (Sent Thursday, July 30, 2009 9:21 AM)"

Ron, you have said it all.  I'd add only that the poll numbers, already sky high for a point near the bottom of the worst recession in decades, are at least partly a result of exactly those forces that you describe.  When will the MSM stop giving hatemongers a platform to spew their venom?  One of the news programs has given Ann Coulter a regular opportunity to belittle, ridicule, smirk, and spout slogans over the top of what is being said by others.  I finally resorted to sending them an email each time she comes on to tell them when I changed the channel.
Hey Beverly in Chicago - Great ode to the Wicked Wasilla Witch!  Now that got me laughing this morning as it seems Sinner Sarah excites our Liberal base to come up with such witty digs against her clulessness.

Just Say No to Sinner Sarah!
On the ed shown last night on MSNBC, he said he is taking time off to read the whole plan, i think we should all do that, because the republicans are saying this, and the dems are saying that and the president is say all of it. before we as american deside what this plan is all about we should not trust any body but out selves. lets be objective and fair to both sides. so over the next few weeks lets stop listion to every body, the republicans, dems, and the president because between all three we are not getting the complete story. we are getting what they want us to here.
also why is it that japan, europe, and every industrialized country has a health care plan for its citizens why can't we. are we too selfish, dumb, stupid. what it is. and for the record bill clintion in his first term had the some kinds of numbers because he tired and failed to get a health care package passed.
so the president does not care about his approval numbers, he cares about getting americans a health care package that will not drive people broke as well as the government.
lets remember this is presonal to him, his mother as she lay dying of cancer had to worry about the medical bills that kept her from just dying in peace!!! and that just not right!!! Is it?
in the end we are all family, americans and when family has its internal fights family must come together for the good of all!! Right!!
so this post is not blaming the republicans or demicrats or the president, this post is to cool everybody down and get at the real truth, the only way we can do this is be reading the bill and find out for our selves what the hell is really going on.

Some people crack me up.  It's Republicans fault when they are in charge with the majority, and they still want to blame Republicans when Democrats hold the largest and most power majority in our history.  Wake up and smell the coffee.  Republicans can't stop anything in Washington.  Democrats have complete and total control to do anything and everything they want.

The other thing I find sickening is how anybody that speaks out opposing Obama's views and ideas, is automatically labeled a racist.  Don't you think it's possible that some people oppose his ideas because they have a different opinion of what should be done and how it should be done?  Have we entered a time in our nations history where people aren't allowed to differ in opinion, without being called racist? This playing of the race card has been going on since Obama entered the political scene and it's getting old.
Ron, IN.  Well said.  It is frightening what the GOP has allowed to become such a prevalent part of their agenda.  By not rebutting this talk, the republicans who don't think the same way encourage the wingnuts in their party and continue to stoke the fires of fear.  This is exactly what the Homeland Security report, that republicans cried "foul" at, was referring to.

Although MSNBC tries to point out the blatant hatred, lie and irrational talk (which is needed), by discussing it with a Pat Buchanan or Tom Tancredo, it merely adds to the shrillness.
Still looking for all those jobs you promised, Obama!
Ron Indiana

Much appreciation for echoing my thoughts as well Ron. All of the networks are playing the carp of hateful insulting, disrespectful words of idiots calling it news. Not a one of them have considered what other nations views are of us. They are sitting back shaking their heads saying...they don't deserve to have Obama as their president.

Ron, they haven't realized that mainstream America has shut them out and will eventually turn their channels to watch a movie rather than entertain their brand of spin news.
First - If, early in the campaign, we were always cautioned not to take national poll numbers too seriously (because sample sizes & composition were questionable and not very projectable, people really paying much attention etc.) why is the news media overemphasizing the polls now (other than to stir up mischief)?

Second - Campaign Mode is over. The campaign was a 2-year slog. Obama won. He gets to lead the country for 4 years. I hope he'll continue to ignore the polls, forget about the campaign and lead the country.

Third - It would be refreshing if our political leaders focused on doing what's best for the country rather than figuring out ways to hold onto power.

Fourth - If there's one reason the public is acting frightened and skeptical about health care, economic and energy reform, the #1 culprit would be the mainstream media which continues to deliver a "food fight"  product which panders to our worst fears in order to hype ratings.
These polls are from people who thought the "Bradley Affect" was gonna effect the November 4th elections. Why don't you guys focus on something else besides these "polls" because they were all wrong by a huge margin. The only sites that were remotely close were realclearpolitics and 538dotcom. So just relax with the poll business for a while, guys. The prez is still the guy that the majority of the people want.
