Pelosi blasts health insurance companies

From NBC's Luke Russert

At her weekly press conference today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi came out aggressively against health insurance companies and their opposition to a public insurance option. “I think it is pretty clear that we want a strong public option in the legislation. Insurance companies full force carpet-bombing and shock and awe against the public option -- so much so that the American people doubt the plan or are uncertain about it, until you tell them what is in it.”

Later, off camera, while walking with reporters to her office, Pelosi took it a step further and questioned the morality of health insurance companies that oppose a public option. “It is somewhat immoral what they are doing. Of course, they have been immoral all along how they have treated the people that they insure.”

In a passionate tone, she continued, “They are the villains in this. They have been part of the problem in a major way. They have been doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening. The public has to know that. They can describe their arguments any way they want, but the fact is they don’t want the competition. They don’t even want anti-trust laws. They have had a good thing going for a long time at the expense of the American people and the health of our country. Our members have to go out there ready to take on a big special interest that has not made our country healthier and have made our cost spiral upward and for whom that is coming to an end.”

Pelosi then said this about the health-care reform legislation: “This is the fight of our lives for the people that we represent, for their health.”

Video: A new poll shows that the majority of voters are against a public health option run by the government, a surprising voice has come out against health care reform. NBC’s Dr. Nancy Snyderman talks with Dr. David Scheiner who was President Obama’s doctor for 22 years before he moved into the White House.

During her press conference, Pelosi was asked about her opinion on the current deal struck by four members of the Blue Dog coalition who sit on the Energy and Commerce Committee. Pelosi replied, “The language that is in the proposal by the Blue Dogs, is the exact same language that is in the health bill in the Senate -- Sen. Kennedy’s bill. So I think there is plenty of common ground as we go forward on this.” She continued, “Sen. Kennedy’s bill … is one that I think would be okay. It’s not my preference. My preference is a stronger bill. It meets the test of having an effective public option.”

Lastly, when concluding her press conference, Pelosi invoked a folksy story about the history behind the phrase, “Thank you ma’am,” to describe the current health-care reform debate.

“They said it probably came from the fact that when a young man was courting a young woman, and they were driving down the road. And they hit a bump in the road, and she’d fall towards him. He’d say, 'Thank you ma’am.' So a bump in the road became equated with 'Thank you ma’am.' So we have a few ‘Thank you ma’ams’ going on around here when we are dealing with a bill of this size. This is all part of the legislative process. Our Democrats will be together to vote on comprehensive health care for all Americans.”

- Nancy Pelosi on the health insurance industry

Well said Madame Speaker - and SO TRUE!

Piglosi has no room to talk about immorality.
If 85% of the people who have insurance are satisfied with it and only 9% of the population is without insurance (most of them, by choice).....then why does there have to be a major overhaul?  Just address the few that are without insurance and the few that are unhappy with their insurance.  And leave the rest of us alone.
Queen Nancy truly is pathetic.  If health insurance companies are so evil and immoral, what does that say about the Democrats in Congress who are doing their bidding?  It's amazing that she is always able to absolve her own people of the blame for anything.

One more time, Nancy.  The Democrats do not need a single Republican vote to pass anything.  Keep your own people in line, and you can have any health care reform plan you want.

I assume it won't include tort reform.  You don't want to offend the trial lawyers lobby that pulls your strings and makes you dance.
Well it’s about TIME!

We liberals need to HIT back & HIT back HARD!

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate our Congress taking their ‘recess’ while thousands of sick & un-insured Americans are dying daily!

Forget about the war in Iraq & Afghanistan… we’ve got our own going on right here on American soil being led by the domestic terrorists who refuse to do what’s appropriate for our own people!

Yes… it’s the right wing whack jobs right here at home that have the blood of Americans on their hands… I would mention conscious as well (but that would require they have one).  Which they DON’T!

PASS HCR NOW!!!  CO-OP = COPOUT!!!
Yeah way to go Nancy Pelosi telling it like it is!  She's got more balls than any of those wimpy Blue Dog boyz who sleep with the enemy and are more worried about mollifying repugnant ones than us fellow Democratic Liberals.  She is so correct that big medical and big insurance are immoral and the villains in the health care debate, just look at all the lies they're spreading with the help of the dopes of nope.

About time that any Democrat got out there and blasted the lies of the repugnant ones who are defending the stagnant quo.  Ofcourse big medical and big insurance want to keep things as they are.  They operate on the cost-plus business model where they can pass along any cost increases plus whatever they want for their greedy profits and executive ripoff salaries to us consumers.  They know that under the current system us consumers have no way to force them to cut costs or our premiums.  We need the public option to keep them honest on keeping medical costs low.

In Nancy Pelosi We Trust!
I just saw that the republicans in congress have come out with their own health care plan. And what a surprise it's main component to pay for the plan is TAX CREDITS! When will these guys learn that this just does not work? It didn't work for the last 50 years it has been tried and it is not going to work now. All that is going to happen is the budget is going to be 700 billion dollars in the hole from this plan (if you are giving tax credits you are not getting tax money; DUH!). Then 2-4 years from now these clowns will be finger pointing at each other about how they "let down" the american people.

Their plan also does not require people to get health care. How is that helping the situation? At the end of the day we will be in the same fix.

These are supposedly smart people with college that were elected to these positions. You have to wonder.
Nancy, when are you going to "take on" all the trial lawyers that donate to you and your fellow democrats and contribute to the "immorality" of our health care????????????????????
Given the effort the insurance industry lead gop has put into trying to derail health care reform, it is quite a statement that polling shows it as strong as it is.

More importantly, it appears that if the Democrats can wrap up a bill and then put on a strong effort to communicate that bill to the people, it should gain strong support. The polls clearly indicate that once people get facts and are educated into what is really into the bill (instead of republican formed lies about killing old people, eliminating private/company policies, and putting the government between you and your doctor), a good bill should get passed and signed into law.

The real issue, just like in 1994, is that the gop only has one strength, and that is to strike fear and terror into the hearts of American's be making up stories about the evils that supposedly lurk behind every Democratic plan.
It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !
Hey Nancy, what ever happened with that CIA and enhanced interrogation thing? Swept under the rug? You must have a pretty big rug to hide all that filth of yours.

Finally someone with guts! Way to go Madam Speaker. Pay attemtion the rest of you cowards.

Oh, good grief!  My guess is that her cosmetic surgery has raised health care costs, too. (Any guesses as to her ability to get it paid for on her congressional plan?)

Then again, maybe it's the results that have her so "passionate".

And the nerve of her to force her morals on other people. Arrogant, too.
If you think it's bad now wait until Howdy Obamy Doody and his puppet Pelosi get done with their overhaul. No thanks, I'll take my chances.

Well, if you would have listened to anything President Obama said, you would have learned that is exactly what he is pushing to do.

But something you must realize is that if cost trends continue, it is unlikely that employers will continue to provide and subsidize health care plans for their employees. Every year more companies eliminate health care from their benefits. And every year the companies that are keeping health care benefits are charging their employees more.
To those that are LACKING in knowledge, plastic surgery isn't covered on any insurance plan...it's ranked up there with ABORTIONS.

Facial plastics surgery, botox, fillers and abortions are not covered under any insurance plan. Oh but, Nancy does have an excellent Plastic Surgeon. Newt is getting too many botox injections…at least Nancy don’t look as though she is entering into the earth’s atmosphere.
Hey Nancy, what ever happened with that CIA and enhanced interrogation thing? Swept under the rug? You must have a pretty big rug to hide all that filth of yours.

But what Obama says he WANTS and whats actually written in the bills are quite different.  I learned a long time ago that Obama is "just words."

The problems with the Republican plan released yesterday.
Tax Credit means you pay up front and get it back next year when you file taxes. (like low income people can afford that)

Not requiring coverage drives up premium cost two ways:
1] Fewer members paying into plans.
2] Uninsured people still using ER’s and not paying.

Avoiding Oversight brings in potential for corruption (like Wall Street).

Use Internet to shop for best price. However it should say that “state” licensing
requirements would be eliminated. (take away states rights)

Set up high risk pools – To me this means high risk people would be not treated
equally.
Dr. David Scheiner should sue Nancy Snyderman.  And you guys, too.  Dr. Scheiner has not "come out against health care reform" !!!!  Shame on you.  What a headline... Obama's own doctor doesn't want health care reform... except it's not true.  He wants MORE health care reform than the cowards in Washington are willing to come up with.  He sings the praises of Medicare and the VA while Ms. Snyderman shoots him down.  And all under the headline "a surprising voice against health care reform".  Unbelievable.

Normally I like you guys, but... unbelievable.

Does anyone have any journalistic integrity anymore?
[I've known Bob Rumson (Speaker Pelosi) for years. And I've been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob (Nancy) devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that (s)he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob's (Nancy’s) problem isn't that (s)he doesn't get it. Bob's (Nancy’s) problem is that (s)he can't sell it!
We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you Bob Rumson (Nancy Pelosi) is not the least bit interested in solving it. (S)he is interested in two things, and two things only: making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle age, middle class, middle income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family, and American values and character, and you wave an old photo of the President's girlfriend (insurance) and you scream about patriotism. You tell them she's (insurance’s) to blame for their lot in life. And you go on television and you (insurance) call her a whore.]
--The American President—Heck, let’s put something into a pop-culture reference, so I can understand it.]

“making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it.”
--That’s what this tirade of Speaker Pelosi’s was about.  She can’t sell health care (errr insurance) to the American people.  So, she is blaming the health insurance industry.  (I’m not saying she’s bad, I still like her.  But her tactics and values are no different than those Republicans you all hate).

Okay, I didn’t do a great job with this but just see the gist.
hey, Plan B moron - because the insurance companies are overcharging, they're saying what doctors and services you can and cant have, they turn down people for pre-existing conditions    and so on .....
how long have you been on earth????????????/
Care to take another ‘shot’ at answering WHY it is that the party of male stale & pale has to resort to BOLD FACED lies & scare tactics rather than presenting the truth & facts regarding HCR?
----------------------------------------------------
Feisty, you missed my point entirely.  You claim (constantly) that the GOP is irrelevant and no one gives them a second thought.  If that is the case, then their ability to sway people with 'bold faced lies' and 'scare tactics' would be non-existent.

However, since the Dems require not a single Republican vote to pass their health care plan, why don't they press on with it without them?  Let's review:  not a single Republican vote is required to pass this.  Since it's such a great plan, why don't they just do it?

But keep telling us it's the Republicans' fault.  With your calm, reasonable and intelligent demeanor on this board, I'm sure you'll convince a lot of people.
Well Said!!!!

The greedy Health Care Insurance Companies will destroy our health and our country.

They inflate our HC cost for profit and control of our government.

We need to impeach or vote out every congress person that the insurance companies are deep in the pockets of and also the people that are fighting and attempting to stop the progress of the HCR bill.

This is an out rage and the saddest thing is - they don't even care.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

surpise, the public option would be for people like me who have been screwed by private insuramce. let the public option run like VA or medicaid. either way, just extend the program. this should not be a repub or dem issue, this should be a middle class issue. cancer or some other serious illness will come calling for us all at one time or another. being a repub does not make you immune... just blind.you better pray that when it comes calling for you you've got a public option or you will end up like me with out any hope for financial peace.BTW, maybe richard and dg and a few others need to face a serious illness(i'll pray for you to) to see the greatness of these wealthy insurance companies they are defending.

oh yea, your buddies' most important research think tank(LEWIN GROUP) has proven out to be a front for none other than united healthcare and 155% profits

serious issues and you joke about a facelift. God help you if you lose your job.
Way to go, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi!  Show the men wimping around on The Hill how it should be done.  I am proud of you for FINALLY hitting back!  Let's git 'er done!  We have started a petition and have hundreds of names and addresses to send to the NC delegation supporting this legislation WITH public option!  Let's flood the Hill with calls and letters! I'm fired up and ready to go!
Way to go madam speaker, I could not have said it better myself.  The health insurance companies are the bad dogs in this fight - they have made trillions of dollars over the years by deregulation and also by throwing away or ignoring claims that come to them - they are also famous for making the doctor's office all but beg for treatment for patients.
I know this because 1.  I have worked in health care for over 20 years (a few in for profit - ugly beast that it is, and the rest in non for profit - feels good to go home at night and not need to clean my soul, mind and body), and because 2. as a patient with extremely high blood pressure after an accident (not my fault by the way)the insurance company made the hospital send me home with stroke level bp readings - yes I could have stayed but i knew I could not afford it, the hospital was good and I know they took a huge cut in payment because they participated in my insurance plan (fyi educate yourselves, those hospital have to take a big cut in actual payment or the insurance companies won't allow the patients to go there for treatment).  My nurse manged to squeeze two extra days of inpatient stay, then I had to go home taking two different bp medicines 4 times a day and monitor my bp every 3 waking hours of the day for over a month.  I know I'm blessed, I'm alive and got sent to the best trauma center anywhere near me, and I know how to take good care of myself along with my good family, but this little ordeal made me dislike the health insurance industry even more than I already did - which I did not think was possible.
Madam Speaker - you have my full permission to use my favorite quote:
The devil may be an attorney, but the devil's handmaden is most certainly the health insurance industry and any CEO or manager who works for them!

So you're saying that 15% of the people that are not satisfied with their insurance should make the 85% of the other people suffer??  Sounds like you're from Uranus.

there are about 45 million americans uninsured.  Thats hardly 9% of americans.  MOre like 15% assuming the nice round number of 300mil.  So your 85% is correct in terms of numbers with insurance, but I think its a stretch (in fact, I know it is) to say the entire 85% is in love with their private insurance.  And remember, a good fraction of that 85% is on a gov't funded health program, and like it.

Reading the above post, looks like you love what Pelosi said, hate her (period) or think we need change in health care.  Thats good: no one said "leave health care alone"  and you shouldnt.  Unless you lobby for the pharm and insurers, I can't image how people can really support the people that quite frankly game the system for their own gain.  I'm so bothered by how immune and content people have gotten with the way things are.  Those that get dropped from insurance, get terribly sick, or lose our job, all make up the minority.  The majority, we say we're cool, we're healthy, why fix it? fix what again?  Its like the problem doesnt exist.  and thats just sad, but its america.
oh yea, I forgot:
PET scan 10,000-12,000

CAT scan  3500-4000

colonoscopy   6900

x ray       700-900

didn't get an MRI...insurance wouldn't spring for it so I don't know the cost on that.

middle class needs:

28,000 stimulus check... bush's was a laugher after all, it's out money... not BOA or AIG.

national healthcare public option

rescind bush's anti middle class anti bankruptcy law written by MBNA(his biggest contributor).
Yes, 85 % of the American people are satisfied with their insurance.  They're the ones who haven't gotten sick yet, lost their jobs, or had needed medical coverage denied by their insurance companies.  I've tested over many months, a variety of medication for high blood pressure.  Went through every cheap drug out there, with terrible side effects.  The ONLY medication that works without the coughing, dizziness, etc. of the cheap ones, was denied coverage by my private insurance plan.  Thankfully I worked for the government and was able to change that plan the following year.  That was after I paid over $300 a month out of pocket, to keep my health.  Could you change your plan? Or could you pay $50,000 a year to fight cancer when your insurance company cancelled your coverage?
Feisty, you missed my point entirely.

You would have had to MAKE a 'point' in order for me to have 'missed' it!

Have a Nice Day!
I was getting upset with those fox news regurgitators until I remembered that I, too, was once young and thought like an adolescent as they are now.
Now I pity them. You know how those hormones screw you up!

Still they are acting like idiots and I fight against what they think they believe, but I pity them.
And who administers the FEBHP health plans that Pelosi and other Congressional folks get and are supposedly happy with?  Private insurers.  Fortunately, for the taxpayers, cosmetic surgery is contractually excluded as a benefit, otherwise Nancy would be costing us more than the stimulus.

Go home to San Fran and stay put.  And parachute Waxman off the plane in So Cal.
Medicare should have the age restriction lowered slowly.  Every 10 years allow a decade of age to be covered (65-55 then 55-45 and so on).  This would change things gradually & not be as expensive as covering everyone at once. And the younger people cost less to insure, anyway.  The system is already in place. Just expand it.  I know the private insurers are PETRIFIED of this particular plan.  But it's the best one.  Medicare for all!!!
Right On, Speaker Pelosi. You speak the truth and the blubbering conservidiots say you need a facelift!  I say they need an a@#-kicking - all the way out of Congress and the Senate.
And the nerve of her to force her morals on other people. Arrogant, too.
