Mich. Dems push for more 'Clunkers' $

From NBC's Carl Sears and Kelly O'Donnell
Michigan Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow say the "Cash for Clunkers" program is an overwhelming success -- that the program is ongoing -- and they're hoping to find more money to extend the program.

"Go in, buy cars, hopefully American cars, that qualify until further notice," Levin urged at a Capitol Hill news conference. "This is the best example of a stimulus program that is clearly working."

Stabenow added, "The evidence is extremely strong that this works. People are buying autos, people are generating revenue for the economy and creating demand, so people can go back to work."

Video: The government’s billion-dollar “cash for clunkers” program seems to be low on money as car shoppers flock to take advantage of the rebates. CNBC’s Erin Burnett reports.

There is a House bill being introduced today that would add $2 billion to the program ($1 billion has already been committed). If the House passes the bill, Levin said the Senate could vote a bill next week.

Levin said he has been "assured by the White House that consumers can continue to buy cars under the program." He released the following written statement:

"The cash for clunkers program has proven hugely successful in its first week. We have been told by the White House that people can keep buying cars under the program until further notice. We don't know how long it will last, so people should go to their car dealers now if they want to take advantage of the program. We're also going to seek additional funding to hopefully make the program last longer."

But not everyone is in favor. Texas Republican Jeb Hensarling, a senior member of the House Budget Committee, is opposed to the House considering legislation to add more money:

"Cash for Clunkers is another example of the government picking winners and losers and enshrines us as a bailout nation. Almost everyone is hurting in this economy, and sadly for many workers across East Texas and America, Pilgrim's Pride, one of the largest poultry producers in the country, recently had to file for bankruptcy. Where's their 'Cash for Cluckers' program? You cannot bailout, borrow and spend your way to prosperity. We now have highest unemployment rate in a quarter of a century. The bailout mania approach to economic recovery is not working."

The media is not a fan of HCR. A majority of them will have to pay for the program. Think about it...they are making big bucks, so it's to their advantage to cut the President's throat on this issue and others...haven't you noticed the tide turning...especially with this Gates incident. They played it for all it was worth.....
That's even more evidence the President's agenda is honest and since for US people and the global economy which Bush and Co devastated. Keep up the good work Mr. President we got got your back!
Most Americans are not blind or obstinate and can see the change you bring
Are all republican congressmen idiots or just most of them?

--------------------------

Can you say Gov. Rick Perry? Pilgrims Pride filed for Bankruptcy in February or before then. They were among the first companies in bankruptcy filings that made national headlines. Wal-Mart continues to carry their chicken. Did they bankrupt, or did they file for reconstruction?

You people didn't want the stimulus anyway...did you?

To: Chris

Oh Chris I know that this State has "several" foreign auto manufactures in this State. Hell the State was sold out to them for a small fraction in taxes. I also know why the program was enacted. I just didn't know "for sure" if the Cash for Clunkers program was to include foreign automakers as well.
'CASH FOR CLUNBKERS' === A  RELATIVELY SMALL PROGRAM WHICH THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION COULD NOT GET RIGHT!

ESTIMATES ... ESTIMATES ... GOD-AWFUL ESTIMATES!

CAN WE RELY ON THEIR COST-OF-OBAMACARE REFORM?

Will you trust Obamacare with you health & life?
GO FOR IT !!
But add restrictions for more fuel efficient vehicles

I'm sure Detroit will cooperate by offering rebates, too
They already are

We NEDD to juice up the Auto industry and help out Michigan

Can we speed up the Recovery spending too ?
Let's get more of those funds working through the economy

We may have bottomed out on the recession !!!

GO OBAMA !!
Actually, another 2 billion will not be enough! It may get us through August, but more will be needed to stimulate the economy and provide more jobs.

Texas Republican Jeb Hensaring can take a long walk off a short plank.  He doesn't have a clue.
Are all republican congressmen idiots or just most of them?
Borrow it from China.  Isn't that where all the other money is coming from?

BTW Was the auto industry failing or just GM and Chrysler?  I find it immoral that Ford has to compete against the free cash that these two are getting from China.
OBAMA AND HIS SOCIALISTS CANNOT RUN A SMALL, SIMPLE PROGRAM LIKE 'CASH FOR CLUNKERS' --- BUT YOU WANT TO BELIEVE THEY CAN RUN MONSTEROUS PROGRAMS LIKE GENERAL MOTORS & HEALTHCARE!

OBAMA IS INCOMPETENT ---

However you are
thanks for forfilling my prediction of another ditto head in the insane, stupid, Hannity, Glen Beck, Limbaugh insane posse.

You people deserve each other
Senator Levin says that a billion dollars spent so far shows the plan is working.  But where are the corresponding auto sales numbers?  Two consecutive posts on the precise same topic have both failed to address this obvious question.

Did this program have any strings attached that said people actually had to buy cars?  If so, then we ought to have seen some actual movement in sales in direct correlation to the money spent.  If not, then what in the heck did we think we were doing, and why would we want to do more of it?

OMG Why do you want to assassinate our president?
I am so laughing at the dopes of nope who are now wiping egg off their faces because they said the Cash for Clunkers program wouldn't work.  With the GDP shrinkage down to 1% last quarter we're seeing that the Obama Stimulus is working also.  The dopes of nope are showing just how wrong they are to always fight against what President Obama is doing to recover our bushwhacked economy the repugnant ones broke.  Rest assured that people are wathcing how reality does not mesh up with the Great Right Lies of Negativity that the shrinking party of sore losers are spewing.

I can't wait to see Ed Schultz today as he was so awesome challenging Quitter Palin to try out radio by subbing for him on his show.  He's a sly one as he knows that his Liberal audience would eat Sinner Sarah for lunch and force her to cry and quit her gig before it's planned end.  I so enjoy how he fights for the public option and agrees to raising taxes on the rich and greedy to pay for it even though he knows he would pay more taxes.  We need more successful people like him making the big money instead of the stingy conservative freaks.

The Obama Recovery is Working!

...and some of us are against it because the current bill stinks.  It is another government program that is not sustainable because it does not address the issue of rising costs.  Go read the article on MSNBC regarding doctors having their own imaging machines.  You do realize that Medicare will run out of money in 5 years and it is being touted as the great success?  Maybe it is but it will need a restructuring of its funding to survive the influx of the baby boomers.

Get off your media/insurance company blame games.  If it was a good reform it would sell itself.
To Anita, Birmingham:

Oh yeah, I definitely noticed that the media is going out of their way to report anything negative about healthcare reform, and nothing positive.

But I want them to KNOW that I KNOW, and maybe if more people know, they will do their OWN research and not just rely on regurgitated Republican smears to make their decisions.

And MAYBE (I know I'm being too hopeful here) the media will PRESENT A BALANCED VIEW of the issue instead of just let up an AUDIBLE CHEER when one of their lies drops approval of the program.

[Michigan Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow say the "Cash for Clunkers" program is an overwhelming success ...]
--Of course it would be a success if the Federal government paid for part of a widget that my state's economy relied on making.
--I'd be curious as to the stimulative effect of buying cars.  If it is stimulative, they should pull the money from the previously passed (ineffective) stimulus or the (somewhat ineffective) TARP.  They have the money they need, they just need to allocate it better.
--People are buying cars, which would be expected coming out of a recession.  A subsidy speeds that along, which might be good, errr okay.

My real disappointment is the savings rate.  People were actually starting to save, but the government puts as much of a keibash on that as possible.  We are a consumer-driven society, and real reform would address that.
Just proves the FACT. You gotta SPEND money to MAKE MONEY...republicans. You just gotta spend it on the right things and not on a WAR of CHOICE in another country.
I don't believe that only liberal Dems are taking advantage of this incentive. This leg of the Stim Pkg is working a little too well.

And to Alan from NJ, Ford declined the loans from the government but can't see how they wuold not benefit from the Cash for Clunkers. There has been no boycott of Ford products that I'm aware of.

Except that this was not part of the stimulus package.  It was actually attached to a supplemental bill for war funding.  However, I agree that Ford will benefit from this as much as other car companies.  My point is ford are competing in an unfair market because of the cheap financing that is being channeled to GM and Chryser.

OK Henny Penny, East Texas is in a class by itself, and not a good class......that would be racism rampant!...and that chicken business was involved in other stuff that probably brought them to their knees!

Give me my Baseball, Apple Pie and Chevrolet!
A few points:

If Government can't estimate the cost for buying "clunkers" how can their estimates be trusted for Healthcare?

People screamed when Bush took a month off. With all that is wrong, and the little to nothing he has gotten done and problems he has created, HOW is Obama taking the month of August off for a vacation? Does he think he is still in the Legislative branch?
Where is the out cry from those who had major issues with Bush?

BUSH OBAMA  Same Same

F.Y.I. Alan, I read the article. I read all articles pretaing to the health industry...it's my business. I must remain informed on all fronts. MRI's and CT's with contrast cost bring in big buck to physicians. Sell you BS to someone that's nieve and not to me. The Co-op plan that Conservatives threw out to us, in order to get our feed back didn't come back positive either.

One more thing...competition in any industry is always good for an economy. Hell, I was born and it wasn't last night either!

CA, you just roam from one party to the other...don't you? What's wrong? Can't seem to make up your mind can you? Aw, go "try" to pick up something at a bar, it's Friday night, you just might get lucky enough to find someone drunk enough to not matter what you look like.

So explain to me how the current proposals address the concerns in the article instead blaming the message.  (..and when did say the Co-op plan was a good solution?)

There is a letter in the NYT today which I found logical.

The “root of the problem,” to use his language, lies in the way doctors are organized and the way they practice and are paid. Doctors are, and should be, the most important factor in determining how clinical resources are used in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury. Neither insurers nor government administrators can make the medical care decisions in a given case. Only doctors and their patients can do that.

The solution to our problem is to cap total national expenditures through an earmarked, graduated health care tax, provide universal coverage on a prepaid basis and encourage physicians to practice in private, not-for-profit multispecialty groups, where they would work for salaries rather than fee-for-service.

The author admits that it will be a difficult sell but puts it out as a long-term goal.  If an objective like this could be proposed with milestones to get there then this would be meaningful, and coherent, reform.
Ben,
I learned in school (too, too many years ago) how to take a test. One of the 'hints' is that the answer with either "all" or "never" is rarely the right answer.
So, to answer your question "Are all republican congressmen idiots or just most of them?", I've got to say only most are. While I can't think of one who is not an idiot, there has to be at least one.
I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
I have a 1994 Mercury Grand Marquee with 159,000 miles on it. Holes in body, just fixed some rusted out gas lines, smelled gas leaking from underneath.Broken ball joints and tie rod ends. Noisey exhaust. The government thinks this sixteen year old vehicle still gets 19 miles per gallon. I don't think so. This is a true clunker and I do not qualify. One mpg too much. Something is truly wrong with the program. I am doing all that I can just to ikeep it running. Age of vehicle should come into play. I wish I could send this message to someone in Wsashington but do not know an e-mail address.

You might want to get your facts straight. President Obama is taking off the last WEEK of August. That sounds pretty reasonable given all he has been working on and getting done.

By the way, President Bush spent 487 days at camp david and 490 days on his ranch. So during his eight years, he spent a total of 977 days of his 2922 days in office on vacation. That equals about 33% of his time. I don't think President Obama is at any risk of eclipsing those numbers!!!
You people saying that Obama can't run cash for clunkers make no sense.

The goal is not to fund giving every driving american a car.  It is simply money set aside for a program.

There was no estimate that said "1 billion will eliminate every <18mpg car on the road"

"1billion should satisfy everyone" NO!

You get it while its hot.  If the money gone, the money gone.  Somebody misses out, this is not entitlement.

But what it is, is highly sucessful and they want to keep it going.
They will invest in us so that:
-we buy cars to fund big and small dealerships (small business)
-require Parts and such from factories(american workers)
-pay taxes on them and register them (badly needed state and local revenue)
-we get rid of old cars (eye sores, run dirty)
-they recycle the cars (jobs at salvage yards, steel re-use)
-the govt makes back a little money(recycling pays a small dividend. Oh, and cars mean tax revenue on gas, oil, parts, tolls, etc.)
I like how some republicans are on here lying that the plan didn't work. IT DID WORK, it ran out of money because it was SO POPULAR. Stop letting your hate blind you to the facts.  They just can't admit it was successful. lmao.. GO OBAMA
Evidence that programs such as this one stimulate the economy versus the tax breaks supported by the Republican Party. Tax breaks are not stimulus spending and here is proof of that.  About 40% of the stimulus package contains tax cuts, in order to obtain a bipartisanship legislation, even though all Republicans voted against it.  This is the correct way of stimulating the economy.  This program creates jobs, puts safer vehicles on the roads, we can breathe cleaner air, save our environment with less dependency on foreign rogue states to produce oil.  That is smart government policy at work. Once we get the economy back on track, we need to restrain our spending, so we can pay back these stimulus incentives. Let's learn from it, revise other programs and keep it going.
Get off your media/insurance company blame games.  If it was a good reform it would sell itself.

Since you dopes of nope - even before any terms of any of the plans were negotiated - said "nope" as usual, and since you guys are rude and want to lie and scream your crazy bs over everyone else, of course, even if everything in all the plans were easy, profits were shown, all else was worked out, you crazy people would still be asking for birth certificates, telling people that their government would be putting them to death, and otherwise acting like idiots.   It has nothing to do with health insurance, it has to do with trying to make sure President Obama "fails" as you have all been directed to do, instead of trying to figure out what can help this country, help its people.  The worst thing I ever said about Bush was that he was an idiot.  The rest is history.  It is not news that he and the rest of his administration were trying to do nothing more than spend down government.  Well, he did that.  And in the process bankrupted this country.  Then he walks away leaving the country in economic turmoil.  Where were the good ideas of the last 8 years, which almost spent us into oblivion, yet offered nothing that was productive for this country, except for Cheney's buddies?  Where's the good and well run insurance covering everyone?  Where's the great education that kept this country #1 for so many years?  Where's the jobs that have been sent overseas by companies with tax shelters off-shore?   It has been a redistribution of wealth - taking from the middle class and giving to the rich.  So, now you pay the penalty, our jobs are gone, we cannot produce anything, we cannot pay for anything, we cannot buy anything, but yet this horrible economic mess is Obama's fault?  And if it continues as it has under the last 8 years we will have nothing meaningful again to show for all the expenditures and all the opportunity for wealth created by this recession.  Opportunity that only - of course - the rich can now afford, as the middle class cannot keep their homes, and just forget about the poor.  In the meantime, the health insurance industry can deny you coverage, mediates what you can and cannot have, makes you pay for all indigent persons who need medical care, gives you nothing in return but higher and higher co-pays and deductibles, and can throw you completely out of the system.  THANK GOD, that President Obama has his eye on more than the almight dollar that the greedy, never can have enough s-o-b-ers have foisted on this country via the Republic party and its goals.  Please, please - show me one GREAT thing that they have done in the past 8 years....just one, except cater to their lobbyists and buddies.  And right now, just show me one, just one, good idea that they have.  All they can do is screech about unimportant bullsh!t, like secession, birthers, deathers, racism, disrepectful a@@holes, while the rest of the country tries to keep itself from going in a slow circle down the drain.
And sadly, the media is helping you along....great job!
How can we expect the government to run our health care program when they can't even get the "cash for clunkers" right?  The government has never solved a problem, just added to it.
there should be plenty of money, get it back from all those banks and pork that your giving to....A benefit to the American people and not enough money, only to bail out big banks and wall street.....and politicians who also benefited from the stimulus.....
