Opponents to greet Obama with ads

Posted: Thursday, August 13, 2009 3:42 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
One group opposing President Obama's health-care plans, Conservatives for Patient Rights, says it will be running print and TV ads greeting him when he visits Montana tomorrow and Colorado on Saturday.

Here's the print ad. And below is the TV one. They criticize the public/government option to compete against private insurers.

Conservatives for Patient Rights is headed by Rick Scott, who was ousted as the head of Columbia/HCA over fraud charges. As the Washington Post reports, Columbia/HCA eventually pleaded guilty for overcharging state and federal health plans, paying $1.7 BILLION in fines.

That may just be the stupidest commercial I've ever seen.  And I've seen a lot of bad ones.
Don't believe the myths about health care reform. Check out the new ad from AARP. It's perfect. Kudos to AARP.

So, competition is a BAD thing?  Hmmm...just when I think I have conservatives figgured out.
Wednesday night one local congressman facing a crowd of protestors tried to keep CBS 2 HD (NY) cameras out. The forum was one viewers almost didn't see, after Congressman Anthony Weiner's (D-NY) staffers said the meeting was not open to our cameras.

***

Faced with our insistence that cameras be allowed, Weiner arrived and was snippy.

Weiner: "This isn't for channel 2. This is for my constituents."

CBS 2 HD: "It's a public forum."

Weiner: "Settle down buddy. This is not about Channel 2 News. As much as you might think the earth revolves around you, it doesn't." He agreed to let us in and moments later, the forum got raucous, amidst an emotional topic that affects millions.

-----------------

Weiner is right. The earth does not revolve around CBS 2HD. He thinks it revolves around him.
Jody Iowa:  I'm curious about your thoughts on Senator Grassley.  Bottom line, can he be beaten or is he a life-long fixture in Iowa politics.

Obviously your assessment is important.

Unfortunately for Indiana, Evan Bayh is a life-long fixture.

This ad has been running for several weeks in central Ohio.

They could do better.

Educated people know that the same thing is happening between you and your insurance company right now.
New Item: Liberal radio talk show host Ed Schultz says right-wing talkers and conservatives want to see Obama "get shot."

I guess this happened on Schultz's radio show. You know the Leftwingers have lost the argument when they bring up these fantasies. What an awful and ugly thing for Schultz to say. What is the point of saying that? It's obviously an realy bad attempt to marginalize his opponents, but in the process he only marginalizes himself. MSNBC may need to re-think Schulz's employment. Or do they condone this type of behavior?
Plumline is Reporting that Senate minority leader mitch mcconnel has'nt read the socalled HCR bill.

WhaddUp with dat mitch ! You trying to make all the GOP look bad or what?

The Truth will slowly trickle down (Ironic Huh).

Love it when a Plan comes together!

Finally the AG is getting involved in this Faux outrage in guise of Promoting democracy.

Thanks for putting in the reminder of the sort of people who are behind a some of the opposition to health care. But it's too unfortunate that many unwary viewers will think this organization really does support "patients rights." It appears that the opposition depends on two things to defeat health care reform: ignorance and fear.

-----------------------------

Patients Rights my butt. I suppose the 1.7 BILLION in fines that Columbia/HCA were paid because he was so concerned for "Patient Rights", that he "overcharged state and federal plans.

These people have no shame! Where is the shame for what he did? He has a nerve to run an ad against Health Care Reform.

I am so glad that his stupid ass did.

He is making our cause all the more better.

It's people like him that are in managed care facilities all across America and we must put an end to this rape of the system and consumers pockets.
Well, first lets all thank Barney Frank for that stupid comment. Then lets look at the CBO estimate that very few people would move from private plans to a public option.

The fear of the public option is completely irrational. No one can know for sure what will happen, but the republican talking points continue to be:

1 - Government run health care, or a public option, will be a disaster that will result in decreased patient health, decreased access to tests, loss of doctors, loss of medical facilities, and loss of test equipment.

2 - A Public Option will result in the elimination of private health insurance.

This completely ignores that fact that companies offer health insurance to its employees not out of the goodness of their hearts, but as a benefit to attract better employees. If they dropped the plan and sent them over to a public option, they would be less attractive than companies that didn't. Unless of course the public option was just as good or better. But if that is the case, then what are we arguing about???

I understand that by nature, republicans are conservatives and thus are afraid of any change. But they need to get over that fear and embrace logic and facts!
How liberals manage to get from the conservative message of "we don't want socialized medicine" to "we hate black people" is a tough equation. As my algebra teacher used to say: "Please show your work."

>>>When was the last time you heard of a town hall in a reliably Demcratic district?
CJ (Sent Thursday, August 13, 2009 12:10 PM)

Actually, CJ, we just had one last night up the street from me.  Joe Sustak ran it and it was attended by mostly pro-reformers (although there were a few teabaggers protesting outside).  I tried to get in but the line was around the block and the place was packed to fire-code capacity before I got to the door, so I wound up having some interesting (and enlightening) discussions with the people outside.  Contrary to what the media (and the right-wing websites) show, most of the people who are "against" HCR aren't the nutbag rabid, right-wing teabaggers that wind up on You-Tube.  The folks that I met were not birthers or deathers, or even remotely racist, but they had some legitimate concerns.  Although I didn't get in, the local news reports that the gathering was mostly peaceful, with people expressing genuine concern, and Sustak answered every question.  I found myself wondering why we don't see THIS side of the debate more often, people on both sides who genuinely wanted to get information rather than shout down any discussion.  I've come to the conclusion that it's the vitrol and potential for violence that the Insurance Industry, their shills, the right-wing instigators (Beck, Limbaugh, etc.), and the sheep that follow them want America to see.  Its sad that they are so afraid of debate that they're willing to show the worst aspects of their nature.  Worst yet, it'll be to no avail.  Health Care Reform will happen in some form or other.  It's just a matter of what form it will take.  The rabid-right have already lost this fight, they just don't have the good sense to stay down.

I was just reading about Donte Stallworth and then I read the tag at the end here.  What strikes me is that when people commit felonious crimes, there really are no 'severe' punishments.  Donte collected his bonus for last year and is foregoing 3/4 million this year.  A man died for pete's sake.  This is probably an inappropriate segueway (sp?) but Pete Rose should flippin' be in the Hall of Fame.  This has become a decades long vendetta.  If these other athletes can commit crimes and sit out a season or serve a prison sentence, why the hell can Pete Rose - Mr. Johnny Hustle himself, not be elected to the Hall of Fame?

I really don't get our country.  Greed and money whores are the 'positive' role models.

‘…Ind. sen.’s wife’s health care income in spotlight
July 26, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS - As a board member of several health care companies, Sen. Evan Bayh’s wife has collected lucrative payments from some of the same businesses that would be most impacted by Congress’ proposed overhaul of the nation’s health care system.

Bayh, D-Ind., contends that the $2.1 million his wife, Susan, earned by serving on the boards of public health care companies from 2006 to 2008 represents no conflict of interest.

But watchdog groups question those payments, partly because Evan Bayh’s positions are unclear on many issues related to health care reform, The Indianapolis Star reported Sunday.

Others contend that Susan Bayh’s rapid rise into corporate governance also raises questions.

Those questions come at a time when Indiana’s junior senator is being courted both by groups that support President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul proposal and by those that oppose it. Obama himself called Bayh to the Oval Office on July 17 for a one-on-one meeting about the president’s health care agenda.

Bayh’s campaign records show he received more than $500,000 in campaign contributions from the health care industry in 2008.

Earlier this year, Susan Bayh resigned from one board, leaving her with seats on four health care-related public company boards.

Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the nonprofit watchdog group Center for Responsive Politics in Washington, said that unless Susan Bayh steps down from all of the boards or Evan Bayh recuses himself from a vote on health care reform, “he could engineer a financial advantage for his family.”

Craig Holman, government affairs lobbyist for Washington, D.C.-based Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group in favor of a single-payer health care system, said Susan Bayh’s lucrative payments for serving on corporate boards should concern the public.

But Evan Bayh doesn’t appear to be concerned about his wife’s employers.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH
Crooked Evan Bayh !!

Lawrence O' was fabulous on Hardball last night.  His polite, respectful, and absolutely masterful skewering of the woman from the Specter town hall was beautiful.  I don't think she even knew she was being skewered. The woman obviously has her talking points and nothing else.  And she's just one of many.

There are obviously much bigger issues behind the hatred and fear we're seeing.  Does anyone think if things had turned out differently and McCain was proposing similar health care reform, would we be seeing this kind of reaction?  Thought not.

Cassie, NYC

Here is a trend being seen with the msnbc lifers. Similar to what Maddow, Olbermann and Mr. Ed do, they have a conversation, with themselves. They ask a question in their writing, seem surprised that no answers them, and then answer for themselves, and seem very pleased with themslves for the result of their "conversation".  I'm certain there is a psychiatrist out there that can explain that very odd behavior.
You can always tell a conservative group because their title is a complete lie.  Conservatives have no interest in patient's rights, all the bleedingheart conservatives care about are the rights of the rich and greedy to make exhorbitant profits at our expense.  Only the fools of faith believe these outright lies because they wish to be masters of self-deception rather than true seekers of Truth, Justice and the American Way.  Where is the Truth in Advertising at when we need it most?  Why are so many lies being allowed to be bandied about on tv?  Oh yeah it's all about the ratings and money isn't it?

"Eric, Salinas.  Enjoyed your quote; in fact, I wrote it down.  How true it is.  We all sometimes fall in the trap of self deception."
Jody, Iowa

Hey Jody, Iowa - Thanks for the shoutout on the Dune quote.  When I read it I knew right away how timely and correct it was and what a perfect thing for me to drop here at First Read.  Keep up the good fight against the masters of self deception!

I am so laughing at Bachmann Moron Overdrive as we now find out her son has volunteered to join up in Americorps.  So hilarious that her son has defied her as she ranted cluelessly about the role of Americorps as some kind of re-education camp.  Despite having a Mommy Dearest it sounds like Bachmann Moron Overdrive's son has turned out well by not listening to his wicked witch of a mother.

Just Say No to Conservative Lies!
The GOP concervative movement are a bunch of rabid dogs who have demonstrated little value for truth in advertising. Why anyone would believe their nasty chatter is beyond me.

They led us into this ecomomic mess in the first place and they never did anything about the health system for the recent six years they held both house and the white house.

That should tell he thinking individuals something if they use their brain for someting other that keeping their ears separated. Lies, damn lies, and GOP lies!

Oh boy, two more phony, staged, and stacked town hall meetings by the Messiah. Will Obie have to ask for someone to ask him tough questions again? Will another cute 11 year old girl, a daughter of a Obama political operative, get to read a planted question again? Maybe Obie can bring Specter along with him, Arlen has heard a few tough questions in the last few days.
We know just how crooked Rick Scott is as he has been busted before for fraud.  Only a total fool would listen to this self serving rich and greedy jerk.  All you fools who try to stop health care reform are just working for this jerk and against yourselves and the rest of us.  Wake up and smell the reality before we're all in thrall to big insurance and big medical.

Rick Scott Belongs in Prison!
The government with Obama at the helm is a sham.

The independents are siding with the conservatives.

Obama wants a bill passed that nobody has completely read ... just like the stimulus. Is he completely nuts or just power mad like Pelosi?

Obama wants complete control over America, it's people and it's way of life.

He is full of himself and suffers from visions of grandeur. Hail the almighty dictator, who is little more than a mouse, even in his own White House.

LOL! And this is what they are coming back with at us HCR supporters? We already know the repukes are lying through their crooked teeth about HCR, i.e. Palin, now, they are putting up opposition adds from a fraud committing criminal!  This is actually not funny, because the dumbed down people of this country who eat this stuff up and are showing up in at the town halls with all their crazy on, will believe this cr@p!

another angry old white guy who opposes change in the healthcare system...surprise!!!!
Rick Scott? Ahh, I see! The libs have picked out their latest bogeyman. Apparently calling Americans going to these town halls on their own free will "Un-American" has run it's course. Then Obama tried to demonize the health care companies as being evil, many of which oddly are supporting reform. So now the libs are going to go after some guy named Scott.

Keep at libs, maybe you'll eventually find something that works, but I doubt it.

Progress libs. Progress.

Scary as hell, isn't it?
What a silly, elementary school ad.  Rick Scott is one of the many "formers" that Ed Shultz, Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann have talked about.  $1.7 billion in fines for Scott's group.  How's that add up for Conservatives for Patient Rights?  He ripped off those patients whether conservative or liberal.  The dems should run an add immediately afterward pointing out this corrupt individual and the $1.7 billion fine--is this the man you want running your health care plan?  The MSM and newspapers everywhere should expose this jerk for what he is, a leech.

From earlier.  The GOP is sooooo predicatable with their claims.  I have yet to see an election where the democratic candidate wasn't accused of being "the most liberal" person ever and I'm old enough to remember plenty of elections.  Talk about needing "change", the republicans really need to and finding some new ideas beyond tax cuts would be a place to start!
Obama is walking into a hornets nest. He has no chance. Bye Bye health reform.
" ... pleaded guilty for overcharging state and federal health plans, paying $1.7 BILLION in fines."

So do all the people who were  duped by Rick Scott believe he has had a miraculous change of conscience ?  Once a crook always a crook !
Columbia/HCA eventually pleaded guilty for overcharging state and federal health plans, paying $1.7 BILLION in fines.
==================

They are talking about Medicare when they say "state and federal health plans". Medicare pays about 30% on the dollar for fees charged. So what Columbia and Scott were trying to go, so they wouldn't go out of business, was charge Medicare more so the yat least closed the gap a little on thier loses for taking care of Medicare patients. Well this probably wasn't the best way to do it, it shows just how badly Medicare is managed by the government and how it is  just killing private hospitals and insurnace companies.
opponents of national healthcare...google rick scott and see who you are in bed with.

Proposal: All three branches of government have their healthcare benefits suspended until at which time we have a public option national plan and then our employees will also be on what ever plan we end up with. sounds fair to me.

the truth of the matter is millions of America's middle class need a rescue.Yes there are still some that are doing well but there are millions of us who are hurting, struggling anf falling further behind.Skyrocketing healthcare costs are now virtually unaffordableyet we have supposedly middle class people fighting and lying about a national plan, the u.k. got so tired of republican lies they had to come out with a disclaimer that actually called out the republican lies. why do you fight a program that will benefit you and most importantly your children? they will not be able to sustain these knids opf healthcare costs.we are the only nation in the world that allows big insurance and big pharma to maintain a stranglehold on its people.

WWJD...He would fight for national healthcare  you know that how you treat the least of them thing. If you oppose national healthcare, fine but do not delude yourself into thinking you are a follower of the teachings of Christ.you ain't.

Jesus would never disrupt for the sake of causing trouble,He would never worry more about an insurance company's profits than kids.

wqe the tax payer are payiong for iraq to have free national healthcare while our own children go without. SHAMEFUL  just SHAMEFUL!
Is Ed Acting Stupidly?

I guess the Secrete Service is taking "all" of this very serious...appears that they are investigating everyone that is carrying "death to Obama sings".

Those that are acting as though they've lost their minds had better hope like hell nothing happens to him or his family. A hole won't be a safe place to hide.
Here, for comparison, are some poll numbers on Obama's handling of the economy and health care:

Gallup-(poll of all adults)economy48% approve, 49% disapprove.  Healthcare 43% approve, 49% disapprove.

Quinnipiac-(poll of registered voters)economy45% approve, 49% disapprove.

Rasmussen-(poll of likely voters)economy41% approval no data on disapproval.  Healthcare 42% approval, 53% disapproval.

(Note-you cannot extrapolate the data on the disapproval number when no data is given, because there is no way to know how many have no opinion or say it is too soon to tell)

On health care:  Section 123 sets for the governing body and its responsibilities.  At page 30 of the house plan, the Health Benefits Advisory Committee is given the authority to determine what treatment, items, and/or services are covered within benefit classes.  The 'classes' are to be deteremined by the same committee.

In that samesection, it is spelled out the all insurers must comply with the government program-therefore, all policies will be subject to government practices and approvals.

This gives the lie to the statement that taxpayers will not be forced to pay for abortions.  It also raises the question of who is in what 'class', and how services and treatment will be determined.

When I e-mailed this question to my congressman, who supports this bill, I got no response.  I suspect he does not know the answer.
A couple of things.

Rick Scott recently made a deal in Florida to accept Medicare payments. It sounds like he's addicted to them. No wonder he doesn't want a government plan, he would lose a lot of money.

If reform doesn't go through, he will be one of the biggest benefactors with his Solantis Corporation.

Regarding Clara's comments concerning Pete Rose: I don't know. He almost single-handedly beat my Royals in 1980. Without him, I really don't think that they win. I can't accept him in the Hall for that reason. I still pretty much despise him for that.

It is not the best in the world according to several very real measurements: cost, life expectancy, cancer survival rates, access to care.

All we want to accomplish with Health Care Reform is access to those that don't have it and protections to keep the insurance that those that are lucky enough to have, currently enjoy. I keep hearing from the right about how tragic HCR is because it will eliminate private care. Yet no one with any credibility has made that claim (birthers, deathers, and Obama is a Socialist nut jobs don't have credibility). But where is the concern for the millions of Americans that don't have health insurance because it isn't offered by their employer and/or they can't afford it? And where is the concern for people that lose coverage and are denied treatment based on loopholes in policies?

It would appear that the righties are concerned about rationing of health care or poor health care only when someone isn't profiting from that rationing!
To your health wrote:

If that's right, please explain why the US ranks 29th out of 30th (second to last place for those of you who don't know how the scale works) in infant mortality (that's deaths for you morons who don’t know what mortality means) and we rank 24th out of 30th in overall care of the 30 industrialized nations.
However, we rank #1 in total dollars spent. How can that be the best in the world? That SUCKS! When are you going to wake up and realize we are getting screwed in terms of our health care!

And for you idiots who talk about rationing, I'm sorry to break it to you, but you have that today - why do you think you only get X number of visits to PT or to the chiropractor or you get turned down for a specific test? Because some CORPORATE BUREAUCRAT BEAN COUNTER is RATIONING your healthcare! Wake up before your toasted brain gets burned!

I have a Canadian friend who refuses to become a US citizen because he doesn’t want to lose his healthcare options. And he lives in Florida for god’s sake – he’ll spend the airfare to go back to Canada for his healthcare treatment because it’s better than what he can get here!

No place is perfect, and we’ll never have a perfect system, but for crying out loud, there’s much that can be improved here in the states –
And Hillary's outburst of indignation, just like with Pelosi and the "lying CIA" and her statement that town hall attendees are "Un-American", this too will just be swept under the rug by the media.

Pelosi didn't claim that people attending the meetings were un-American. She claimed that those who were drowning out the meetings and preventing debate were un-American. There is a huge difference, but you really don't care, do you?

The media has covered the Pelosi quote. But what they haven't done is turn it around so that it sounds like it is criticizing reasonable people.

The people that go to the town halls and ask questions are fine. Those whose goal is only to disrupt the meeting so people can't get information are being un-American.

They have a right to free speech and peaceful demonstration. But they don't have a right to interrupt meetings and debates and thus step on other people's rights to free speech.
Shout out to all the real Americans against the socialist un-American HCR that will be giving Obama the BIG picture tomorrow in the great state of Montana.  All 50 states of America would be standing with you.  Keep up the great work as the fire of freedom burns bright.  Keep the town halls going and call your representatives.
I for one am tired of Obama using tax payer money to fly all over the country to push his so called health care program, even when he knows that the majority of the country don't want it.  I now think it is more about his ego and the program.  He does not want to admit he is losing and he and liberals will do everything to ensure they get their way.  Yes, we have government health care (medicare, medicaid, & VA) but these programs were passed to help the elderly, disabled, the poor and those who were injured while serving their country while in the military.  We do not need the government involved in everyday health care for everyone Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane in the country.
Apparently, there is not one rational argument to be made against health care reform.

There is another possibility-- the opposition is simply too stupid, too criminal, or too bankrupt of ideas to develop a rational argument.

So you are justifying breaking the law because it didn't suit their business well?!?!

It appears you are saying it is okay to break the law, as long as you have a good reason.

It also appears that you are advocating elimination of Medicare.

So I guess that is what is all about! First the republicans plan to defeat health care reform, then they can eliminate medicare, then they can eliminate social security. After that, they will eliminate law enforcement, public education, and the interstate highway system. because they are all government run and not worthy of the ultra conservative nut job veiw point!
