NBC poll: Doubts about Obama's plans

From NBC's Mark Murray
Two weeks since raucous congressional town-hall meetings on health care became a national story — and days after President Barack Obama began holding his own town halls — Americans remain skeptical about White House plans to overhaul the nation’s health system, according to a new NBC News poll.

A plurality believes Obama’s health plan would worsen the quality of health care, a result that is virtually unchanged from last month’s NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. What’s more, only four in 10 approve of the president’s handling of the issue, which also is unchanged from July.

And a majority — 54 percent — is more concerned that the government will go too far in reforming the nation’s health care system, while 41 percent is more worried that the reform will not do enough to lower costs and cover the uninsured.

“Things have not changed radically in the past two weeks,” says Democratic pollster Jay Campbell of Hart Research Associates, which conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.

“But they have changed enough to illustrate an environment that has gotten tougher” for the White House, he says.

Damaging misperceptions
One of the reasons why it has become tougher is due to misperceptions about the president’s plans for reform.

Majorities in the poll believe the plans would give health insurance coverage to illegal immigrants; would lead to a government takeover of the health system; and would use taxpayer dollars to pay for women to have abortions — all claims that nonpartisan fact-checkers say are untrue about the legislation that has emerged so far from Congress.

Forty-five percent think the reform proposals would allow the government to make decisions about when to stop providing medical care for the elderly.

That also is untrue: The provision in the House legislation that critics have seized on — raising the specter of “death panels” or euthanasia — would simply allow Medicare to pay doctors for end-of-life counseling, if the patient wishes.

I read the WHOLE poll.  This is not just the rantings of the misinformed-for example, the majority ,(50% DO NOT believe that Obama wants to kill their grandmothers).

However, a majority thinks his plan is a bad idea. A majority think it will cost too much, and give too much power to the government.

Healthcare is going down in flames.  Obama ran as a pragmatic centrist, and showed his liberal colors AFTER he got elected.  There were those of us who tried to warn the moderates and independents who he was, but they were lulled by his dulcet tones.

They seem to have tuned him out now, though.
I'm wondering how far the "death panels" statement would have gone, or how effective it would have been without the "hate Palin" echo chamber of the left wing, the main stream media and Democrats in general.

Palin might have chosen, deliberately or otherwise, provocative words but she doesn't really have the communications infrastructure to amplify them without the media, left and right.

But the biggest problem with this whole thing is not "misperceptions", it's that the "plan" is a muddle.  If there are misperceptions, it is more the direct result of an unclear plan mired in legislative verbosity, gobbledy-gook and political gamespersonship.

I think they should start completely over.  And since there are a couple of European health care models that so many people here are enamored of, why reinvent the wheel and propose something else?

How about a little directness from the presidential agent of change and a new proposal that simply says:
"I want U.S. health care modeled after France.  Or Germany.  Or Canada. And I want it now and I want it financed in exactly the same way."

With that, I think the debate begins on far more honest ground and the American people can have a clear choice.

For a change.
I think that this adminstration needs to do develop the same attitude towards polls as the previous admistration.  It is the only one that the conservative and Republicans understand.

RADDATZ So? You don’t care what the American people think?

CHENEY: No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls

HCR with the public option must pass.
As you state there are so many misconceptions being stated that people have no idea what the truth is.  I'm sure people on Fox News and the Palin's and Limbaugh's are not going to ever speak the truth about healthcare.  All those out there who only get their news from these sources will never believe otherwise.  We only have to hope that the majority of Americans are smart enough to demand the truth and demand reform.  There were enough smart Americans to vote for President Obama.  Now our President needs to step up to the plate, realize the GOP will never get onboard for healthcare reform, and push the Blue Dogs to actually represent their constituents instead of the healthcare lobby.
I'm sure this number is volatile. If Obama just talked plainly and convinced people that he won't cut back on Medicare or make them give up their current plan the numbers would be positive. He should say something dramatic that he would resign or give up his salary if their were these changes.

He also has no backbone, but caves on everything. He needs to say we will have a public option or heads will roll, akin to what Johnson did in the 60's when Medicare faced the same nonsensical charges.
If you read the bill, many of the "perceived" fears ARE real.  We've already been mis-lead by this president and his team.  We've already heard them contradict themselves.  Why should we trust them?  The key is whether directly or indirectly, rationing, paying for abortion,...etc will happen.  Glad to see americans waking up to the radical liberal overtaking of our nation.
"FOLLOW THE MONEY!" and you'll see which elected officials are being "bought" by the special interest group lobbyist.  There is so much talk (most are untruths) that I started following the money. If the Republicans, blue dog Democrats and the insurance companies don't want the Public Options plan in the Healthcare Reform, it's probably good for the country and bad for their pocketbooks.  See where your elected officials are getting their money!!

Obama hasn't done a good job of selling it. With the full court press by the liars on the other side he needs to mount a full defense or the liars will win.

Democrats need to mount the same kind of campaign we did to get him elected in the first place. If the right wing extremists win this they'll think they can win everything. We need to stop them now.
Wonder what Keith O and Rachel will have to say about the declining numbers on their shows tonight.

Oh, that's right, I forgot no one watches them-she even admits getting their a**** kicked by Fox.
Gee, Richard it sounds like a perfect delaying tactic

The problem is that Obama hasn't SAID WHAT HE WANTS
He's trying to do the opposite of what the Clinton's did

Jojo, the Democrats will pass HCR becuase if they don't their goose is cooked

Obama isn't so much a liberal as he is Barack Dukakis
Hopefully, he'll LEARN from his mistakes
(i.e. Trusting Republicans to negotiate in good faith)
Oh, and you missed a point from your poll:

The president's approval rating is now 51% in your poll, down 2 points from last month.

This after a summer of campaign events.

There's also an interesting article in today's Washington Post about Obama's drag on Chreigh Deeds' campaign.  Seems that two thirds say his endorsement either makes them less likely to vote for Deeds, or has no effect.

Deeds is still trailing by double digits.

I guess leaving out the approval rating was just an oversight.
By the way, cannot believe what Eric in Salinas said about Robert Novak today.

He should pray he never has to endure the horror of battling any cancer, yet alone a malignant brain tumor.

A totally classless act.
America: The only country on earth that can be talked into war and talked out of getting healthcare.

The fact is, the only way to improve the quality of care and bring down costs is a public option. The current healthcare system will bankrupt America. That is perhaps the only fact in this whole sideshow.
There SHOULD be vigorous debate over this BAD plan.Just because Obama is a great orator does not mean we should blindly make such a huge change with 1/5 of our economy and our health/lives!
Of course the numbers reflect mixed feelings.  After three weeks of nonsense, it's hard to cut through to the facts.  Wonder if the questions I answered Sunday were for this poll.  If so, some of the questions were two choices and you had to pick one whether or not you agreed with either of the choices; in several cases there should have been more choices.

NJNB, but 50% DO believe Obama will pull the plug on grandma.  The 4 lies out there have high percentage of believers which says something about how uninformed people are, how gullible people are, and how pathetic most of the republicans who exploit that guillibility are.  People told Claire McCaskell they didn't trust her--well the GOP lies about death panels, abortion, etc. are exactly why voters don't trust politicians.  Sen Grassley and his lies are prime examples.  Whether democrat or republican, none of us wants to be lied to.  Those who deliberately make up this stuff, Palin, Grassley, Boehner to name several are poor excuses for politicians; we pay their salaries and we should at least get honest answers to questions and not a bunch of lies made up for political gain, campaign donations, and scare tactics.

I'll be gone tomorrow.  Have a good day everyone.
"One of the reasons why it has become tougher is due to misperceptions about the president’s plans for reform."

Hmmm, maybe the media should start, I don't know, crazy thought here... clearing up the misconceptions? Wouldn't that be part of the job of the media in its role of informing the public?
People have been heavily influenced by the misinformation put out there by the right. Once good info starts getting presented in a clear manner those poll numbers will change. And we will have a health care bill with a public option in place by December. Count on it!
I do not pay particularly much attention to polls because they can be skewed, and a random sampling of a few hundred people to me is not representative of how the American people really think.
How about this, folks?

Since the Senators and Representatives have the final say on OUR health care, lets ask them to drop theirs, until everyone has a similar plan...

Betcha that would pass...  Quickly...

One of the reasons Obama was elected was to reforn health care (insurance) and create a way to have afordable or subsidized health insurance for All as other nations have done with lower percentage of their GDP and higher satisfaction with their medical
system. Please citizens, this is an important, major purchase...know the facts and have civil discussions.
i have private insurance that cost 470.00 a month, i pay 365.00 my retirement pays 105.00 stipend a month.
i have a 500.00 personal deduction and 80/20 for all other procedures. i support the president on public health option for those who don't have insurance or can't afford it. i think most of the people complaining are selfish and will be the first in line to use public health, that is why the scream the loudest. selfish, selfish, selfish. by the way most people on social securtiy/medicaid have already spent all they paid into the system already and they too scream the loudest. if they got cut off because all their benefits they paid in are gone they would cry, cry, cry. most of them are drawing money they did not pay in. i still pay taxes(fed, state) and it will be 10 years before i can collect on social security at 62. i still want public health and GOD BLESS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND PROTECT HIM AND HIS FAMILY from those who disrespect our leaders of the free world. go figure.
This poll really just shows what a poor job our media does in getting out good information to the public.
The media ran wild with the town halls. If it is on TV, it must be true, right?  Lots of people think that.  Or "Where there's smoke, there's fire."  Without correcting sufficiently the lies that were being spread, focusing instead on the angry mobs, these lies were fed by the media. I am sorry, but facts do not get into the news much nowadays. Now, after people have finally become convinced of the lies, the media injects some facts.  Too late. It reminds me of how many people thought Bin Laden was connected to Iraq, and that is why we went to war there.  It was something like 40%.  Years later, it seems, some journalists tried to correct that misconception.  Probably still exists.  A lie told often enough becomes the truth. You are all poor journalists, opportunists, ignoring the fact that  one of the main purposes of journalism is to INFORM...entertain comes at the bottom of the list.
The answer to your question, Richard, is that President Obama is not after health care similar to France, Germany or Canada.  It is more like an Americanized version of Switzerland's which is very successful.  Get a clue.
Can someone please do a poll that shows conclusively that the people who are against and who believe the lies about "death panels" etc. get their "news" and information from FoxNews, Rush, Hannity, Beck, Levin, et al. And then break down the ratings of these media and the demographics to prove once and for all that all these lies and absolute crap are brainwashing people.  We all know there is a correlation.  Let's show the numbers.  First Read and MSNBC really need to expose the level of impact these right wing nut jobs are having and then we must ask the question "why do people watch and listen to these hacks?" and "why do they have so much influence?"  I fear for President Obama's safety and the truth about the lies being spread in these media outlets needs to be exposed...please.
The big lie is that republicans are holding up the health care bill. This lie is today featured in the NY Times, Obama's biggest cheerleader. The truth is that dems from conservative districts do not want their a_ _ _ _ voted out of office next year by their conservative leaning constituency so they are holding up the bill. The HCR issue is going to be seen in history as the apex of Obama's brief (1 term) presidency. Obama will lose this one and then Cap & Trade and then Immigration reform as americans show the left that a large majority of us don' agree with their brand of marxism. Obama has moved the Immigration reform issue to the end of the year. Do you really believe his reasoning "that his plate is currently full?" No. He knows that if he were to bring it up now it would be another round of demonstrations that would basically "lame ducK" his admin after 8 months. I love how the real americans are standing up to the elite pigs in Washington who think their self rightousness is the only way.
Where to begin. The rightwingnuts have won. They have also lost the one opportunity to change the unsubstainable trajectory of healthcare in this nation. Its too bad because the issue is so poisonous now that nothing will happen until the bank breaks.

Their plan is to hand out tax credits to people who don't pay enough in taxes to take advantage of the credit and to continue to allow the insurance companies to ration healthcare through denials and non payments.

Irony of ironies is that it is the type of voters who vote republican that need access to affordable healthcare. You can lead them to water.
I'm just not understanding here.... Are these the SAME Americans that voted the President in to CHANGE the way we do things.  We voted for him to "fix" the health system.  So, why are we now so "doubtful"?  OR!  Are these just the words the media is putting out there... for what?  Help me understand.
