If Massachusetts Democratic lawmakers want to change their state's succession law to enable a caretaker senator to serve in Kennedy's seat until next winter's special election, they certainly have the math on their side.

Per data from the National Conference of State Legislatures, 89% of the Massachusetts Senate and House is Democratic -- 35 out of 40 senators and 143 out of 160 House members.

Talk about a supermajority...

This liberal democrat thinks its a bit fishy to change the law like that at such a whim...if the Dems didn't want Romney to pick Kerry's potential replacement, and thus changed the law to prevent that, then they should swallow their own painful pill. BUT...there is some really pressing important work that needs to be taken care of by this congress, and maybe this time, heads should turn the other way as the Dems in Mass. change the law, once again, to fit their agenda.  I don't know...while on one hand this doesn't sound like good gov't to me, on the other hand, I see why this should be done...to expidite the replacement senator to make the crucial needed votes along what Kennedy would've done.

Mark--what say you? this is priceless! What a hoot! Republicant's how do you like this deck? There is a way! lollollol
Please note that Massachusetts also has Super Taxes and is also Super Bankrupt.
Where is this any different than Texas redistricting between census's to gerrymander more districts for safe republicans and dilute democratic districts? It is a simple political calculus. He who has the most votes makes the rules.
Richard Washington State: Politicians practice their own peculiar form of capitalism by trying to get their hands on as much of your money as they can.

Where as companies "get their hands on your money" by selling you a service or product of high quality at a reasonable price, politicians just steal it from you and give you nothing in return.
Is Charles Manson better then Bush? He (Manson) would fit right in with the Democrats. S. Fromme (Sent Thursday, August 27, 2009 1:53 PM)

Perfect!!

I'm sure the pubes will be up in arms about this. But did they really think that any republican in taxachussetts was getting this senate seat? i mean really?
Well, I agree with them changing the law back, mainly because I think it was bad to change it in the first place. Every state has the governor appoint a temporary replacement until special election. Massachusetts should too. If a governor replaced an elected democrat with a republican or vice-versa, they'd be run out of town anyway.
Just love it, about time the democrats start fighting to honor this man who gave them so much.  Give him the healthcare bill!!!
Bill, Fairfax, VA.  Coming from Baltimore; that says a lot.  It is a breach of etiquette for you to acknowledge the existence of nay Hoosier. Bus it is just as well, because Nashville and Calar do a great job keeping you humble.

Yep, the Colts left in the dead of night to come to Indy.  We have a beautiful new statium, a palace that Manning built.  November 22 Manning will place a dagger in the Raven's chest.  Best you watch Fox News instead of football.
Personally, every state should have similar legislation in place for circumstances such as this until a special election can be held.  The care taker should be of the same party as the person being replaced regardless of what the governor's party affiliation is.  It just makes sense that states be prepared so that it has its full legislation representation at all times.  From what Gov DuVall said this morning, I gathered that similar legislation has been sitting on the table several years but nothing had been done.
Osama bin Laden is where?  The terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 were trained where?

Pete, Albany NY

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

bin Laden could be in the Bahamas for all we know.

And, so what where the terrorists where trained ten years ago! It doesn't matter! That's like saying you're going to keep having the police raid the south side of Chicago because that's where Capone hung out.

You liberals just don't get it. There are lots of "terrorists" around the world that want to, and have, harmed us. It's not a matter of getting revenge for 9/11, it is about preventing another 9/11 from happening. Iraq was part of that effort. Too bad you won't ever figure that out.
Awesome!

After listening to Devall (sp?) Patrick this morning on the joke show… looks like they’ll get it done! Yea!!!

Lefties… brace yourself from the sh*t storm that’ll be coming from the uptight righties on this!  They’ll really be howling now…

To Ron Indiana – Glad I can give you a laugh or two… honestly with all the material around here it’s like shootin fish in a barrel!

From your earlier post about Daschle… I’m not sure about that… I USED to believe he was the go to guy but with everything I’m been reading lately it looks like he’s in bed with big insurance as well and backs the Co-OP err I mean COP=OUT instead of the Public Option.

To my girl Nash: You’ve been on your double ‘A’ game lately.  I applaud your patience with Bill.  I don’t bother to read him too much any more… his protracted ‘masterpieces’ are all hyperbole (shout out to Clara!) with no SUBSTANCE!  It’s like Chinese food you’re hungry again a ½ hour after you eat it…

And Noblow is becoming further unhinged every day! Notice the typo's this morning... oh well maybe the med's hadn't kicked in yet...

Bill & our resident narcissist Richard are quickly becoming new BFF’s!

To Jody IA: Your welcome for the link… pass it around to everyone you know! Let’s just say that my ‘optional’ message would never have made the FR board!  I told them EXACTLY how I feel about Glen Beck in no uncertain terms!

co sign!

I love Teddy Kennedy; but it was a little odd that he didn't resign when he stopped being able to show up to vote.

I still believe that the only truly fair thing is that the governor appoint someone of the same party affiliation.

It seems like we are constantly out in the weeds when we try to get clever with legislation for a specific team's benefit.  Tangled is the web, and all that.
Paul, Huntsville, AL : Well, I agree with them changing the law back, mainly because I think it was bad to change it in the first place.

The liberal mind at work again. If it's good for me, it must be good for everyone!
Gee, I guess the idea of the people actually picking their officials must be out school.  If they change this law because Teddy's dead after Teddy got it changed for political purposes, they all should be shot!
I agree with Pat on this one,it don't smell right,But having seem how the courts had to decide the elections that Chicken little stole ,with the help of his bro in Florida, all seems fare when it comes to bending the rules,as long as they go the way I want, sound good right?Lets be straight,Edward would have voted for the HC package he fought so hard to move forward,no doubt. His finger prints are all over so many great programs we all can say thanks, even the wingers who don't have a clue what the man did,all they know how to do is discredit him and all Dems for all that matters, see the party of no hope is so stuck on there derailing Obama tour, send him to waterloo is there battle cry,to bad they don't have one person in there party that has a once of creds, not one.So sad watching a bunch of OLD white guys trying to scare other OLD folks with there lies. The big tent party, now a rollaway.
This should piss off several million right wing bigots.
Dems - for the most part - go to he//!

Leave us - the one's with jobs, hopes, dreams, aspirations, and without six illegitmate children, lottery tickets, and a gd welfare check alone!

If you and your likes want to give away everything you have to feed and house the fourth and fifth generation of welfare - knock yourself out - me, well, I prefer to keep what I earn and donate to those who are at least making an effort to make it on their own!
Tax Payer
-----------

I just couldn't resist this...When was the last time you checked facts on the amount of "welfare" that recipents are on in this country? Better yet...how much of the budget was allocated in 2007 for the programs...uh, thought so.

Social programs was 19%, about 13% of the total allocations were for Medicaid, food stamps, tewporary assistance needy famlies, supplemental security income, and related programs, and the remaining allocations were for health research and public health programs, unemployment compensation, assisted housing and social services.

I guess those poor people were getting a hell of a lot of assistance, weren't they?

The interest on the NATIONAL DEBT was 9%, borrowing to cover the defict was 6%. That means that only 3% was being applied to the GROWING defict. The wars were not included in the budget.

Corporate income taxes collected--13%

Social Security and Medicare taxes collected--32%
Social Security and Medicare money spent--38%

Lastlty, personal income taxes collected from the little people--43%

Shame on you and your posting. You republicant's kill me with the old tired ass "welfare" role statements. Stop blaming those people that are struggling to survive.

It doesn't matter where they work, hell, they work. They pay taxes. Hell Bush tried to put all of your asses in the soup line. If you've got it...try sharing. This posting is for those that can't defend themselves....shame on you.
Gee, I guess the idea of the people actually picking their officials must be out school.  If they change this law because Teddy's dead after Teddy got it changed for political purposes, they all should be shot!
I have no doubt Democrats will successfully pursue this.  Why shouldn't it be all about power for them too?
see the party of no hope is so stuck on there derailing Obama tour, send him to waterloo is there battle cry,to bad they don't have one person in there party that has a once of creds, not one.So sad watching a bunch of OLD white guys trying to scare other OLD folks with there lies.\
jesse St Paul MN

Jesse, you hve one big whoppin' lie inyour stmt. The Republicans CANNOT Sstop the Dems. They have a majority; they have reconciliation. They can pass this bill if they want to.  Of course, guess I can't blame you for lying about it; BoBo the Clown whines all the time that it's somebody else's fault. He has no ownership of his own issues.
To paraphrase what one other eloquent amateur First Read Democrat Lib pundit so eloquently replied to me once:

It takes one to think they know one.
Fiesty, How did Your glass trailer hold up in the recent storms. I would have sent BOBO over to confort you. While I do refer to our president as the beloved BOBO, it is only because he acts like a clown. It certainly isn't close to the hate spew of your posts. Also a classic libby tactic to take my post and only use the part that fits your so so called response. It does prove my point though. You are incable of  living up to Ted Kennedy's ideals of reaching across the aisle and respecting fellow Americans. That truly is pathetic
Looking at all the photos of the Kennedy generations on line, does anyone else marvel at the strong family resemblance that showed up through the generations? I have a moderatly big family, and lots of old photos of ancestors, and we don't all look so strongly alike. What's up with that?
