First thoughts: Retooling time

*** Retooling time: Just askin’, but what would be the bigger news today -- if President Obama was re-vamping his health-care pitch or if he decided NOT to re-vamp it? Well, multiple outlets today are reporting about the health-care retool. Politico says that the White House “is putting the final touches” on a new health-care strategy, which will include detailing his health-care demands from Congress in a speech as soon as next week and which won't insist on the so-called public insurance option. However, the White House pushes back a bit against the story, saying it just one of the options being considered. That said, senior White House adviser David Axelrod tells the AP that it’s beginning to be time for the White House to put everything together. "The ideas are all there on the table," he said. "Now we are in a new phase, and it's time to pull the strands of these together." By the way, look at the post-Labor Day schedule: It's pretty clear the White House has to do something on health care in first 10 days after Labor Day, because the rest of the month is dominated by the economy, 9/11 anniversary (translation: Afghanistan), UN General Assembly, and the G20. and

*** Debating the public option: That the White House might not be insisting on a public option shouldn’t be big news to anyone who has been following the debate over the past few months. Of course, the news is likely to enrage the left. Yesterday, the man who likely will be the new AFL-CIO president, Richard Trumka, said the labor group won’t support any legislation that doesn’t contain the public option. (Obama, it turns out, addresses two AFL-CIO audiences in the next two weeks, at their Labor Day picnic in Cincinnati and then in Pittsburgh on Sept. 15.) And tonight, progressive groups like MoveOn are sponsoring vigils across the country demanding the government/public option. But we’ve asked this question before and we’ll ask it again: Why did the left make this the centerpiece of any reform -- more important than insuring more Americans, establishing an insurance exchange, and preventing insurers from denying coverage to those with pre-existing health conditions? In other words, is the left really going to walk from any health-care legislation that does those things but that doesn’t contain a public option? Also, why hasn't there been a greater debate over the phrase "public option" -- is it really an obvious description of what those who are for it are advocating? If they had given it another name (say "expanded Medicare"), would it have changed the debate a bit and kept seniors from feeling so concerned?

*** Change you can believe in? As Nicholas Lemann writes in the New Yorker, “If a health-care bill passes this fall, it will be full of compromises: departures from liberal ideals, and fudges about how much it will cost. But anybody who stops fighting for it now is going to spend years repenting. As long as Congress passes, and Obama signs, a law that embodies the principle of universal, government-guaranteed coverage, the country will have achieved an enormous, and previously elusive, advance. Reagan nailed it in 1961: medical care is a core element in the liberal social compact.” South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, a Blue Dog, also sums up the polling we've seen on health care, maybe without realizing it: “I want to support necessary change,” she said. “But I don’t want to support radical change.” The real lesson, some say, of the Ted Kennedy legacy? His regret for not taking the health-care deal he could have cut with Richard Nixon in the early '70s.

*** Selling Afghanistan: But if the White House thought selling health care was hard, selling staying in Afghanistan might be harder. Just look at the array of stories TODAY. The New York Times: "Tribal Leaders Say Karzai’s Team Forged 23,900 Votes." Another Times headline: "U.N. Sees Afghan Drug Cartels Emerging." The Washington Post: “Taliban is much stronger than the insurgency the U.S. military faced in Iraq.” And the Los Angeles Times: "First the votes, now the complaints pile up in Afghanistan."

*** They’ve done studies, you know -- 50% of the time, it works every time: As of yesterday, President Obama’s approval rating in the Gallup daily tracking poll was 52%, which is close to the 51% in our NBC poll from last month. As Gallup has noted, if Obama falls below 50% in his eighth month on the job, it will be the third-fastest drop below that mark for a new president since World War II. Gerald Ford fell below 50% in his third month, Bill Clinton in his fourth month, Ronald Reagan in his 10th month, Jimmy Carter in his 13th month, Richard Nixon in his 25th month, LBJ in his 29th month, Bush 41 in his 36th month, Bush 43 in his 37th month, and Eisenhower in his 63rd month. Note: Kennedy never fell below 50% before he was assassinated, and George W. Bush was approaching that mark right before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A few things to remember about all the analysis folks will see on polls in the coming days: There are more BAD polls now than ever before; it confuses the issue and lets some folks cherry-pick what they want. The VERY erratic robo-polling firms have added to the confusion like never before.

*** Obama has him where he wants them? This data above tell us a few things. One, Obama has had a rapid drop and that doesn’t help his prospects for things like health-care reform. Two, the most recent presidents -- Reagan, Clinton, and Bush 43 (right before 9/11) -- have experienced similar drops, suggesting an increased political polarization over the past 20 or so years. Three, taking George W. Bush out of the equation due to 9/11, every president who has ended up winning re-election since 1980 saw his approval rating drop below 50% in his first year. Moral of the story: If your goal is to get re-elected, it’s better to have your political struggles early (Clinton, Reagan) rather than later (Bush 41). Kind of like a college football season, right? Better to lose early, than late. So be careful what you read into what Obama’s approval rating right now means for his presidency. There’s really no correlation between how quickly a president’s poll numbers drop and the overall success of his presidency.

*** GOP recruiting and 2010: But here’s another byproduct of Obama’s declining poll numbers: It’s encouraging some Republicans -- who might not have run for office in 2006, 2008, or even three months ago -- from seriously thinking about running for the Senate or House in 2010. Yesterday, we learned that state Sen. Gilbert Baker (R) is going to challenge Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D) down in Arkansas. While Lincoln still has be considered the favorite here, and while Baker has a crowded GOP primary to deal with first, it is clear that Republicans are recruiting better candidates than they have in quite some time. Recruiting success in politics doesn’t guarantee you’ll win the race, but it gives you the opportunity to win. One other sign to watch for in the next few months: If the declining Obama ratings push any DEMOCRATS into retirement. For the GOP, the big difference between now and this point in the '94 cycle is the lack of open-seat opportunities caused by Democratic retirements. Republicans made a lot of their gains in '94 due to retirement, not knocking off incumbents.

*** Another SCOTUS opening next year? According to the AP, “Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has hired fewer law clerks than usual, generating speculation that the leader of the court's liberals will retire next year. If Stevens does step down, he would give President Barack Obama his second high court opening in two years. Obama chose Justice Sonia Sotomayor for the court when Justice David Souter announced his retirement in May.” Stevens is 89.

*** Sestak vs. Toomey: Let's debate -- well, kind of. There will be a debate in the Pennsylvania Senate race WITHOUT Arlen Specter. Rep. Joe Sestak (D) will take on former Rep. Pat Toomey (R) at Muhlenberg College at 6:15 pm ET. The topic: health care.

*** More on Rangel: On TODAY this morning, NBC’s Lisa Myers asked this question: How did chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, Charlie Rangel (D), forget to disclose more than $600,000 in assets and thousands of dollars in income? Myers reported that, per Democratic sources, Speaker Pelosi and the Dem leadership have agreed not to make any decision about Rangel’s chairmanship until the investigation is complete. The Ethics Committee is taking a long time, sources tell us, because Rangel's finances are THAT complicated and that, well, messed up. A big factor working in Rangel’s favor, though: The next in line for the chairmanship of Ways and Means is Pete Stark, who is, shall we say, a "controversial" old-school liberal. Notice how few House Republicans actually are taking the opportunity to criticize Rangel.

*** Beam me up outta here: Finally, former Rep. Jim Traficant (D) will be released from prison today -- after serving seven years for bribery and other charges. The former Ohio congressman's release will be honored at the local minor league baseball team's game that night in Youngstown, complete with a video of his career on the JumboTron. There will even be a dinner in his honor on Sunday. “We need to tell this guy: ‘We still love you, Jim,’” said Linda Kovachik of Boardman, who was an aide in the 17th District congressman’s Boardman and Youngstown offices.

It's nice to be back... there's no place like home here at FR!

After spending the past 5 days in emergency rooms - waiting rooms - recovery rooms etc...

I want to make certain that anyone one of you right wing whack jobs that might have thought you would be able to possibly persuade me to give up my fight for HCR understand you're SORELY MISTAKEN!!!

If anything witnessing the suffering of not only my family member but every other patient battling a horrendous disease like cancer has ONLY strengthened my RESOLVE to get every American access to quality affordable healthcare!

Here's a challenge to you Repubicants... (especially the ones who INSIST that every one can get access to health care by going to the ER)... go sit you happy asses in an ER or Hospital waiting room and witness with your own eyes WHAT goes on there! Until you walk in one of their shoes... you need to STFU!

If you're one of the lucky ones who doesn't have that pesky problem with the hard wiring from your eyes to what grey matter you possess... tell us AGAIN how great our current system is?  We'll be waiting... and waiting... and waiting...

No human being should ever have to go through what these patients do...

Keep in mind my mother is only ALIVE today because she has EXCELLENT insurance... Without it I would have buried her 5 years ago!!

I would pray for your souls... but it would only be a waste of time as you have NONE!

GIANT SHOUT OUT to all the regulars (and newcomers) who kept the domestic terrorists on their toes while I was gone!!  Keep in mind their numbers are deceiving... probably a dozen or so REAL uptight righties and then the one clown who posts under numerous 'catchy clever names'... yeah dumbsh*t we're not as STUPID as you!

And many many thanks for all of your prayers & best wishes for my Mom!  Obviously I inherited my 'feistiness' from her and she's not going down without a FIGHT!

The Los Angeles Times delves into the fact that red states, home to some of the strongest opposition to health care, could benefit the most from the president's reform efforts.

Like I’ve been saying… YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID!!!
Charlie Rangel is another one of the Dem aberations that live in hypocrisy.

Another liberal tax cheat who wants to punish others for his own wrong-doing to the tune of 3 mill.

Throw this jackass out of office.

U.S. Economy Gets Lift From Stimulus

“The U.S. economy is beginning to show signs of improvement, with many economists asserting the worst is past and data pointing to stronger-than-expected growth. On Tuesday, data showed manufacturing grew in August for the first time in more than a year. "There's a method to the madness. We're getting out of this," said Brian Bethune, chief U.S. financial economist at IHS Global Insight. . .

Much of the stimulus spending is just beginning to trickle through the economy, with spending expected to peak sometime later this year or in early 2010. The government has funneled about $60 billion of the $288 billion in promised tax cuts to U.S. households, while about $84 billion of the $499 billion in spending has been paid. About $200 billion has been promised to certain projects, such as infrastructure and energy projects.

Economists say the money out the door -- combined with the expectation of additional funds flowing soon -- is fueling growth above where it would have been without any government action.

Many forecasters say stimulus spending is adding two to three percentage points to economic growth in the second and third quarters, when measured at an annual rate. The impact in the second quarter, calculated by analyzing how the extra funds flowing into the economy boost consumption, investment and spending, helped slow the rate of decline and will lay the groundwork for positive growth in the third quarter -- something that seemed almost implausible just a few months ago. Some economists say the 1% contraction in the second quarter would have been far worse, possibly as much as 3.2%, if not for the stimulus.

For the third quarter, economists at Goldman Sachs & Co. predict the U.S. economy will grow by 3.3%. "Without that extra stimulus, we would be somewhere around zero," said Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist for Goldman.”

Spin that.
Now Obama has to show he stand up to his liberal base? This is too rich!! Let us know how that goes, because those in that base are the only ones that are keeping Obama's approval ratings from going into the '30s.
The last time Obama went national with his so called health care message was that news conference he had where no new information was provided, and it was topped off with him stating the Cambridge police were acting "Stupidly". What more does Obama have to lecture us on today? Probably nothing. Just repackaging the same bs and trying to put a pretty little bow on it and calling it "new and improved". Obama makes the sham-wow guy look believable and competent.
Obama has already lost the terms of the debate - whether or not people trust him and a big government solution. They don't!

He can't have that back just because he changes tactics.

The people are on to him, and previously unchallenged matters will be challenged. People are suspicious of his motives.
It is rather obvious now after 8 plus months, that the junior senator of Illinois is in way over his head.  But to paraphrase Hillary, he gave a good speech.
Who in the world can believe Obama anymore? When Sebelius went on Meet the Press and said "A public option is not necessary", Obama quickly retracted it and said that Sebelius misspoke. Now Obama is saying (or going to say) "A public option is not necessary", So which is it President Obama?
Not having a Public Option is going to torque Nancy Pelosi and the Unions off to no end. Pelosi is Obama's best friend when it comes to legislation, and it looks like that relationship will now end. Obama can't win. If he stays to the far political left, where he's been all along, he loses the centrists. If he moves to the middle, which he's never done, he loses his liberal base along with Nancy and her followers plus the unions, and he also loses the very base voters he owes for paying their hard earned dollars to get him elected.

It's not quite clear how, but Obama has stumbled into a Lose-Lose-Lose situation.
The Public Option is gone, unless the Dems want to risk their political and social careers, including the party in general.

And is Obie running anything but his mouth? Looks like the donkey is heading to the barn.

By the way, 2010 belongs to the GOP. The Dems had it and they lost it. Ouch!
Booze and hookers at the Afghanistan embassy? What, is Billy C. in charge there?
Jobs, economy, health care, Afghanistan, swine flu, Iran, Wall Street, Iraq, middle-east. Wasn't Obama going to solve some of these problems? Looks like he's just made them all worse.

Another unsourced "news" report.

Would it kill you folks to wait until you can confirm a report or until the event is announced?

I mean, the amount of time we wast arguing about stuff that isn't even real . . . like when you whipped everyone into a frenzy with the whole "second stimulus" fantasy . . . or the "raise middle class taxes" story you made up . . .

How about debunking some lies instead? America would be much obliged.

And what's up with the use of "so called" before public option?

I mean whether you agree that we should have it or not, the public option is the public option, right?

Geez.

P.S. Thanks to Feisty, Anita, Ron, Tim, and Greg for the kind words this week (sorry if I forgot someone - been a crazy week!) . . . you guys and girls are an inspiration! (Feisty, hope your mom is doing better.)

P.S.S. Clara, you asked about my grandfather a few days ago . . . he died of natural causes on Jan. 2 of this year, 1 day after his 83rd birthday. . . he had a long, happy life . . . thanks for asking!
KennedyCare - Looks like we've gone from "Win one for the Gipper" to "Win one for the Gulper"
It's a "what have you done for me lately" thing with Obama.

The problem: Obie hasn't done anything ... period.
To Jonathan: Utopian Libertarian Socialism

You initially surprised me by invoking race in a debate regarding our central bank because I mentioned Kool-Aid… (what you said Jonothan)

Surely you don’t expect me to believe, that a young “educated intellect” such as yourself, didn’t know that referring to the President and kool-aid in the same sentence wasn’t racist? That’s why it’s important to learn for yourself instead of using talking points. They can be dangerous when mentioned around the wrong people at the wrong time.

Barack the Majic Negro, Kool-Aid and the pictures of the monkey’s were passed out at campagin rallies during the McCain –Palin stops. Of course you insulted me and all other African Americans that post on this site and brothers that are involved in the struggle for human and civil rights. Also add “uppity” and “gal” (when referencing a black female) on that list as well..

I strongly advise you to choose your words carefully in the future. That word isn’t a code that’s hard to disimulate. I was angry with you when you referenced my comments with the Kool-Aid statement, because it was unnecessary. But after reading your postings. I  arrived at the conclusion that you “really” don’t know what’s going on and you’re attempting to find out. However it still doesn’t excuse your rudeness and ideology.

Young man, this Nation has suffered catastropic economical and financial losses that almost destroyed it. Had it not been President Obama winning the election, we would be suffering worst conditions than we are now because McCain, Palin and the Republican Party wouldn’t know what to do. I’m willing to give him the benefit of doubt for now, because I “know” in my heart that things were far worse than we knew they were. Common sense and substantiated fact of the economy today is proof enough.

I don’t expect you you jump on my bandwagon, however I do expect you to respect my right to comment with fact. President Obama isn’t Superman, he doesn’t have a majic wan to wave and he certinally isn’t expected to clean this country’s entire ass due to years of maintaining status quo leadership.  I’ts not even fair to “assume” that he should be expected to clean it up in one term or even two, what has taken years to destroy due to leadership from a party that’s primarily focused on maintaining power and holding down those that are destin to rise. (the majority of the democratic masses)

The problems we are facing didn’t just evolve overnight or seven months aago. It has taken years to get here. Here is more history for you, it’s a loop that’s being played out by the fraction that insist on maintaining power. We have another international situation; those wars in the middle east is a prime example and FDR stated this “when" he was CIC.

"the present international situation is dangerous"; "wondered how such a state of affairs had come about"; "eternal truths will be neither true nor eternal unless they have fresh meaning for every new social situation"- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Everyone has a wish list for him, everyone wants to govern this country, without an office by siting on the side lines heckeling.  There are opinions a plenty, yet those that are making them, didn’t run for the office that would have given them the opportunity to put their gripes and criticisms into action. Hell everyone has a soloution to every problem now…don’t they?

For a young man of thirty, you shouldn’t attack comments of adults that have lived history when you were just a question mark. As far as your opinions and Federalist papers from 1775 and 1804.  those are of interest to you, not me. I know what’s in them, you are just learning. That’s not a bad thing. But don’t expect others to be excited by papers written and studied in history classes by all of us.

In order to go forward we must look back…but not back to follow the writings of Jefferson and Hamilton to the letter (read between the lines).  Every cake that’s made, is made by a recipe young man and as the recipe gets handed down over generations, its changed here and there to improve it. Some indegredents are added to improve the taste and texture and some are added to increase serving portions. (a metaphor) What is the Constitution?

You also favor ecnomic utopia. Most of you Republicans turned Libertarians no doubt read for example, Robert A. Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress; that portrays an individualistic and libertarian utopia. You are rather young to be dabbling in capitalistic and socialized ideology and judging by your awe at the writings of Jefferson, Hamilton and other founding fathers. You need to expand your library and social calendar.

Watch the movie the Great Debaters, It is based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, who, while at Wiley College formed a debate team which beat Harvard in 1935 during the national championships. This will get you started on the road to understanding a few things about African Americans and some of their struggles.

Most Africian American scholars (teachers) are using this movie as a learing vehicle for  Senior high school students. They are “required” to watch the movie and write essays. It allows them the opportunity to learn and understand the importance of their heritage and why it is imperitive that they take full advantage of  educational opportunties and remain wise to the teachings and opression of those that wish to silence them and keep them slaves of themselves.

Those were the basic teachings of my era and those of my parents. Unfortunately they had fallen by the wayside but thanks for the example of education reflected in our leadership (President Obama) the young coming into adulthood will revive the fight for justice and equality for all people reguardless of their stations in life. No, I didn’t grow up drinking kool-aid, I grew up drinking Lemonade, iced tea and fruit juicy hawaiian punch, I liked watching punchy.

It was a majical drink for me, because we have a president that was born in Hawaii and who woulda thought it! How about a nice hawaiian punch? **snark meter 200**
Regarding the House of Representitives, didn't Pelosi say she was going to "Drain the swamp!"? Looks like during the draining, she found the biggest snake in the swamp is in fact Charlie Rangle.
So Obama is "detailing his health-care demands from Congress?"  That doesn't sound right.  We, the people, are the one who tell Congress what to do.  Not some inexperienced, power-hungry, narcissistic, race-baiting, class-warfare-promoting, warmonger who is trying to play president. He is incapable of listening to the people and what we want.
If Stevens does step down, he would give President Barack Obama his second high court opening in two years. Obama chose Justice Sonia Sotomayor for the court when Justice David Souter announced his retirement in May.” Stevens is 89.
===========

The liberal justices better get restocked during Obama's four years in office, if Obie even decides to stay that long (resignation is an option for the Ob's). It's going to be a long time before another Democrat is in the White House after the Obama debacle is finished.
I have NEVER heard Obama talk so much and say so little.
FR: As Gallup has noted, if Obama falls below 50% in his eighth month on the job, it will be the third-fastest drop below that mark for a new president since World War II.
--------------------------------------------------

Another thing the corporate media won't tell you:

Back on Sept. 10, 2001, G.W. Bush's Gallup Poll approval rating was 51% -- one point lower than President Obama's rating now. So despite the fact that Bush inherited a budget surplus and a nation at peace. his approval ratings were no better than the ratings now for President Obama, who inherited two botched wars, an enormous budget deficit, and a health care system whose costs are out of control.

It's been a while, but I don't recall back in 2001 that the media was fixated on Bush's approval ratings looking for signs of weakness the way they are now waiting breathlessly for President Obama to fail.
If your goal is to get re-elected, it’s better to have your political struggles early (Clinton, Reagan) rather than later (Bush 41). Kind of like a college football season, right? Better to lose early, than late. So be careful what you read into what Obama’s approval rating right now means for his presidency. There’s really no correlation between how quickly a president’s poll numbers drop and the overall success of his presidency.

----------------------------------------------------

Hit the nail right on the head...good job FR
I guess the same liberals that shoved Obama's 70% approval ratings in the faces of anyone that opposed Obama will now say to ignore the failing approval of Obama. Sorry libs, not happening. Obama is falling faster then any other president ever, and he's earned ever bad poll number he's received. He's an awful president. He doesn't have a clue what he's doing.

Because I am sure that if the phrase "expanded Medicare" was used, nobody in the Republican party would have made up lies about death panels. That word "option", which pretty much is synonymous with "choice" is what FORCED the sweet lil' Republicans to lie to the old people.

Uh huh.

Do you folks ever read back over what you write before you press send?

I just ask because for the past two days, I get the impression that this column is more a work of fiction than anything else.

First the President is not "bipartisan" enough, and now the reason old folks are scared is because the Democrats are bad policy namers, not because the Republicans lie and the media broadcasts these lies as fact.

Alrighty then.

There's spin and then there is hubris.

First Read may have officially crossed over.

About time that the White House is retooling their strategy for getting health care reform with the public option passed.  They tried to learn lessons from how it was attempted under Clinton but they learned the wrong lessons.  President Obama should have been more forceful and specific about what he wanted to see, now he has to do that in the middle of the process.  The last thing Barack should do is listen to the dopes of nope who want to start over, all they want to do is string the process out so they can keep spewing their filthy lies to try to fool people into thinking HCR with the public option is bad.

Good point FR crew about how Obama's dropping approval ratings are in line with history of presidents who got reelected.  The party of sore losers is making way too much of the approval rating's drop and they'll find out the hard way next year that Obama is still far more popular than they are.  Let's not forget how low the approval ratings are for the dopes of nope.

The biggest problem with Afgfhanistan is how Tyrant Bush backed that Corrupt Karzai clown and just ignored rebuilding that nation so it would stop being a failed state.  No surprise that War Criminals Bush and Cheney never wanted to make Afghanistan a success story as they didn't see any oil there.  Now President Obama has to fix the mess created by the War Criminals's neglect.

In Obama We Trust!
FR: Note: Kennedy never fell below 50% before he was assassinated, and George W. Bush was approaching that mark right before the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
----------------------------------------------------

I didn't see that sentence when I wrote my previous rant. Kudos for  putting these poll numbers into some perspective. It's seldom done.
Obama up until now has totally p*ssed off the Republicans and the centrist blue dogs of his own party. Now he's working on doing the same for the leftist liberals. Can Obama figure out a way to get his approval ratings into the '20s? I think so! Doing that is not easy, and Obama should be recognized for such an accomplishment!
Isn't it interesting that the Bush Adminstration f$#@#d up the War in Afghanistan, but it's President Obama's fault.

Very creative reporting, that.
There is a flaw in your poll analysis:  the presidents whose poll numbers dropped early and won re-election were the same as the candidates who ran for election in the first place.

Obama is NOT.  He ran a crafty campaign, and gave speeches designed to allow the listener to hear what he or she wanted to hear.  The media glossed over his record, (such as it was), and concentrated on trivializing any disturbing patterns in his past.

While lauding his stint as editor of the Law Review at Harvard, there was no mention of the fact that he never even SAT for the Bar Exam.  What other presidential candidate could get away with refusing to allow his college records released to the public?

Even now, you gloss over the people he has as 'presidential advisors, (read czars), at least one of whom is a CONVICTED FELON-Van Jones, the so-called Green Jobs Czar.

What is telling about Obama's poll numbers is that he has dropped insignificantly among Democrats and even Republicans.  The real drop has been among Independents, who voted for a pragmatic moderate and got a far left liberal who seeks to cram multi-billion dollar programs through congress with no chance for public review or comment.  It is, after all, OUR MONEY.

I was one who campaigned for Jimmy Carter and lost faith in his ability to govern.  I had been disappointed with his performance-he lost me for all time with his "National Malaise" speech.

Obama not only over-promised, he actively lied to voters about his agenda.  His polls might have dropped when the economy did not turn on a dime-which would have been unfair; however, his stimulous package, unpopular when he rammed it through, has produced nothing but debt; his cap and trade policy, if enacted, will produce nothing but higher taxes; and his health care reform policy, which he tried to ram through, is wildly unpopular.

The 'Zelig" candidate has been revealed to be the most far left liberal president we have ever had-he won't win re election, (heck, I doubt he will even run-he cannot stand rejection), and he is going to serve out the last two years of his presidency with a Republican congress.  Bank on it.

This one is expecially for you there No Jo All Blow…

There are more BAD polls now than ever before; it confuses the issue and lets some folks cherry-pick what they want. The VERY erratic robo-polling firms have added to the confusion like never before.
Nashville_fan (Sent Tuesday, September 01, 2009 3:05 PM):  “Simply put sir, you are not telling the truth.  The CBO has said the public option WOULD NOT eliminate private insurance.”

Simply put madam, you ignore items that don’t support your biased point of view.  If you had read past the first sentence in the cnbc.com article you referenced, you might have added balance to your post by quoting this line from the story:

“The controversy [i.e. how many folks would opt for the public option] seems far from settled, given uncertainty over projections of how a revamped health care system would work.”

Or this one: “The reasons the estimates are so far apart have to do with different underlying assumptions.”

Or this one:  “As if to underscore how such estimates can vary, the Urban Institute public policy center also ran calculations – and came up with different numbers.”

Then if you were really enterprising you might have gone to the source and taken a look at the CBO analysis where you might have stumbled across this little gem:  “Because all of these factors are uncertain, estimating enrollment in the public plan is especially difficult…”

The bottom line is CBO made a preliminary estimate of how many folks might opt for a public option based on one bill (from the House Ways and Means Committee), and that’s fine.  But it’s not the end of the story, it’s only the beginning.  There are too many unknowns that preclude calculating a hard estimate that all parties would find credible.  And until these uncertainties are resolved and an estimate for coverage under a public option can be calculated with more confidence, then we really can’t be sure of how much pressure a public option will put on private insurance companies.  And until we know that, the theoretical case I laid out for pushing private health insurance companies out of business will continue to have merit.

You also said: “…they [health insurance companies] aren't providing medical services, so what is the money they receive for?”

For a smart person, you sure can be obtuse.  Your car insurance company didn’t make your car and your home insurance company didn’t build your house.  But if you get in an auto accident and total your car or if your house burns down, then the insurance companies will make you whole.  Similarly, while your health insurance company won’t perform your heart bypass operation, they will pay the bills for the doctor and hospital that does.  That’s what insurance companies do.

It’s a simple concept really.  An insurer will insure 100 people and collect premiums from all those folks so they have enough cash on hand to pay the 5 or 6 or 7 or whatever number of folks who file a claim.  That’s what insurance companies do with the monies they collect.  Whether it’s car, home, or health, insurance companies spread their risk among a large pool of people so they can pay the bills for the smaller number of people who file a claim.  If you don’t understand that as being a service, then I really can’t help you.

Then you wrote: “Why are you always trying to protect insurance companies instead of sick people?”

Actually, I’m not.  Had you paid the slightest bit of attention to the content of my many posts – rather than just pick out the nuggets you can attack – you would know that I have stated on numerous occasions that I support incremental HCR.  I just don’t support the radical approach the left is pushing.  As for insurance companies, I am just appalled by the rampant misinformation coming from the left on this board and feel compelled to present a more unbiased and objective view.  A view on which I will elaborate soon in a post coming to a blog near you.

By the way, a careful reader would have noticed that the post you commented on did not take a position on the public option one way or the other.  The point of my post was to take a shot at the disingenuousness of the left on the public option issue, not to weigh in on the public option itself.  So for all you know, I may think the public option is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Chris - IL (Sent Tuesday, September 01, 2009 3:11 PM) – thanks for your thoughtful comments on this same post.  I will respond as time permits, but my first priority is to go after the attack dogs :)
He's an awful president. He doesn't have a clue what he's doing.

Post again when it hits 28%, Andy.
Then, all us dumb-assed diehards can say "stop picking on him!"
Saw yesterday where Mr. Steele is targeting seniors. This is a practice pioneered and perfected by Jesse Helms in Carolina. Every election cycle the phamplets and posters would appear in senior centers and nursing homes (especially Down East) full of the most outragous lies and innuendos you have ever seen. It must be true because Jesse wouldn't lie to us.Preditory practices targeted to the weakest amoung us by political parties are wrong and contribute to the general low esteem that politicans are held in.Or as my dear old Daddy said "There is no honor amoung thieves" Why does the Republican party give any creedence to Mr Steele any way. To the best of my knowledge he has only been Lt governor in a lackluster administration and since then couldn't get elected dogcatcher in Maryland.Seems to me you'll have much better talent in the bullpen.
Back on Sept. 10, 2001, G.W. Bush's Gallup Poll approval rating was 51% -- one point lower than President Obama's rating now.

Bush though didn't have a main stream media that genuflected at the mention of his name like Obama has. Free Ride doesn't even begin to describe what the cheerleaders in the media have given to Obama.
That's interesting that Sestak is taking on Toomey in a health care debate while old Arlen is hiding from the debate.  I sure hope that PA gets smart and votes for Sestak to replace too old Arlen.

What a fool Bachmann Moron Overdrive is as she now is calling for a covenant of blood brothers to slit their wrists and share blood.  Yeah Bachmann Moron Overdrive wants to spread AIDS!  This evangelical christian lunatic fringer should never be allowed to sully the halls of the House and it speaks ill of the clueless voters in Minnesota who voted for her.

What kind of supreme idiot is Glenn Henpecked and what does that tell us about his clueless audience of teabag zombie sheep who dimwittedly believe his tripe?  Now he's whining on about losing liberties, yeah like where was he when Tyrants Bush and Cheney were taking them away from us except cheering them on.  Glenn's crowd of Henpecked viewers are merely proof positive of PT Barnums sage old saying that there's a sucker born every minute and they all seem to be in the party of sore losers.

Impeach Bachmann Moron Overdrive Now!
Obama was (over) sold as a new kind of leader. How wrong was that?
political polarization seems to be the only way this country knows how to operate. I blame most of it on the Gop starting w/ Reagan's 11th commandment of thou shall not talk ill of a fellow Republican to pay back ala the kitchen sink thrown at Clinton to Rove's every dirty trick in the book to attempt at one party rule. For the representative of South Carolina to say she does not want "RADICAL CHANGE" Are you kidding! Who are you pandering to? Radical change is what brought us Medicare, Social Security in the 30's and the Civil rights in the 60's. People what will it take to realize that corporate America is laughing all the way to the bank and making chumps out of all of you. If you truly believe that your employer's will stand by you in this economy or that when you/family unexpectly come down w/ a chronic illness that your for profit insurance companies will continue to pay is WRONG. Take my word for it as someone who works in hlthcare as a casemanager/advocate for pts THEY DO NOT CARE THAT YOU HAVE WORKED FOR YEARS FOR COVERAGE. Profits is what matters to them. You are just a name and a number. PERIOD! For you ignorant masses on this blog keep demonizing hlthcare reform and making the goverment the boogyman while corporations and the other globalists see  you only as  pawns in their games keep wlth in a fews hands.
Don't underestimate Pres Obama and his team.  Of course, they are "re-tooling", it's dumb to think they wouldn't be.  This is part of the legislative process and it always has been.  Let congress write the legislation, debate and plan the next step once you have a reasonable picture of where the public is and what is feasible on the Hill.  There are too many positive, progressive parts of this legislation to let it die completely.  Get what you can, and then keep at it.  A recent Des Moines Register poll shows that in addition to overwhelming democratic support, 36% of republicans and 56% of independents support the public option.  It is critical that our congressional members be reminded that what is popular in their D.C. world, is not what people want.  Democrats need to stand tall and do what they know is right and just as with social security and medicare (no GOP votes there either), the people will find out that they like it.

Are the GOP recruits, the "pure" candidates or could they actually be recruiting some moderates?  Good job FR reporting the difference between 1994 and 2010.

That should be a good debate.  I like Joe Sestak and he knows his stuff--this would be an interesting one to see.

Well, he served his time and it's up to his hometown to decide what to do.  One thing for certain, there are always a few crooked folks on both sides of the aisle.  Gives us something to talk about.

As far as the polls go, the economy and fear play a big part in Obama's drop.  Afterall, this is the worst economy since the Great Depression.  People are exposed to nonstop discussion; the constant negativity of the GOP and second guessing by everyone else is enough to make people doubtful.  That's how the GOP plays the game.  His numbers will go back up.
I have NEVER heard Obama talk so much and say so little.
Polythene Pam

Has Obama said anything yet that turned out to be true?
Ron Indiana (Sent Tuesday, September 01, 2009 3:13 PM):  “You must remember that you are not under any circumstances to talk to a Hoosier.”

Hmmm, I’m not exactly sure how to interpret that remark.  I’ll presume it’s some form of quaint midwestern humor that escapes me.  Because surely you’re not suggesting I should not have the unmitigated gall to dare to challenge you.  Heck no one else around does, so I may as well.  Besides, there’s still that little matter of the dagger…

But we do agree that time will tell and we’ll find out the Obama strategy when we find out.   I’m not in the business of predicting the future, but I do post my opinions. And my take continues to be that reconciliation will not be used and the HCR bill that Obama ultimately signs will not include a public option.

If it turns out that I’m wrong, I will stand (temporarily) humbled before the board and publicly confess the error of my misguided ways.  Maybe even in a post to you.  Unless of course, I really am prohibited from engaging a whoser.
Republicans keep spinning, and America is getting dizzy. great point,

Bush Adminstration f$#@#d every thing, the economey, the wars, the surplus, the deficets, but all the repubilcans and alot of american blame the current president, bush even vetoed health care for children, but all everybody wants to do is blame the president, even no jo, ( her or him) we don't know because this preson is a coward and does not want people to know who he or she is, always leaves post that president Obama is always lying. shame shame on stupid people like no jo.
Like I’ve been saying… YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID!!!

Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL
........................................................
That is correct as that's why we're going to vote OUT democrats in all upcoming elections.
WE are taking OUR country back.
Saying NO to socialist HCR
no joe, no bo, nj: There is a flaw in your poll analysis:  the presidents whose poll numbers dropped early and won re-election were the same as the candidates who ran for election in the first place.

Obama is NOT.

------------------

That statement may have more truth in it then not. Obama is easily frustrated. He doesn't like people to disagree with him, and he doesn't like to be backed down. But that is exactly what is happening. Being President and having to work with others, like Congress, really cramps Obama's style, even though Congress is so tilted in his favor from a politcal point of view. Even with his Congressional advantage, Obama can't get anything done. After four years of that frustration, Obama may just toss it and become a "Leader of the World", running around the globe making speeches to adoring crowds. That's more Obama's style.
9/11 anniversary is interesting. Dick Cheney has a lot of bluster about how obama is making us less safe, but if 9/12 comes to pass and we have not been attacked then Obama has done a better job of protecting us than Cheney and Bush did.
The dopes of nope had better not party like it's 1994 next year or they'll be in for a big sad surprise.  They are already declaring premature victory, something they always do, and have yet to do the hard work of convincing Mainstream America that they are better than the ruling Democrats.  Let's not forget that it was only 10 months ago that Barack Obama and the Democrats cleaned their clocks nationwide.  Real Americans don't like whining crybabies!

I'm sure glad that Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow keep exposing the lies of the party of sore losers and their fox and freaks propaganda channel.  They've done a great job of debunking the lies and exposing the conspiracy of big business lobbyists who are trying to hoodwink the majority.  Good thing our Liberal media is on the job making sure to point out the lies that the dopes of nope spew daily.  Also thanks to the First Read crew for being part of that Liberal media who keep bringing us the truth even if the limpwristed conservative crybabies whine baby whine about it here.

President Obama is getting a handle on the Afghanistan problem he inherited from War Criminals Bush and Cheney.  Despite the high casualties the past few months we are now making some progress in reducing the Taliban there that the War Criminals ignored.  Plus we're seeing progress in Pakistan which was also ignored by the War Criminals who allowed it to be a safe haven for terrorists.

In MSNBC/NBC & First Read We Trust!
Politico says that the White House “is putting the final touches” on a new health-care strategy, which will include detailing his health-care demands from Congress in a speech as soon as next week and which won't insist on the so-called public insurance option. However, the White House pushes back a bit against the story, saying it just one of the options being considered.
-----------------

I'll wait to hear the actual facts before commenting in depth. The president said the same thing himself at the stragety meeting for his supporters. He also said that "Public Option" must be included.

*** Debating the public option: That the White House might not be insisting on a public option shouldn’t be big news to anyone who has been following the debate over the past few months. Of course, the news is likely to enrage the left.
-----------------------------

I am still waiting on the President's plan before commenting. You people are throwing out red meat with hopes that we bolt and run away from the President. You won't get my opinion until I have facts.

*** Change you can believe in? As Nicholas Lemann writes in the New Yorker, “If a health-care bill passes this fall, it will be full of compromises: departures from liberal ideals, and fudges about how much it will cost. But anybody who stops fighting for it now is going to spend years repenting.
----------------------------------------

Life is also full of compromises. Liberals are willing to compromise as long as it doesn't mean selling out.

FR-- South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, a Blue Dog, also sums up the polling we've seen on health care, maybe without realizing it: “I want to support necessary change,” she said. “But I don’t want to support radical change.”

Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, you are STUPID. These are perilous times for American taxpayers. Insurance premiums and denial of coverage has affected a large majority of the population. The health care system is being held hostage by the insurance companies. Get the picture...NOW IS THE TIME FOR RADICAL CHANGE!

fr--So be careful what you read into what Obama’s approval rating right now means for his presidency. There’s really no correlation between how quickly a president’s poll numbers drop and the overall success of his presidency.

Thanks for clarifying that. Now you right wingers can stop salivating all over yourselves.

*** Another SCOTUS opening next year? According to the AP, “Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has hired fewer law clerks than usual, generating speculation that the leader of the court's liberals will retire next year.

With Justice Steves being 89 years old...it's a correct assumption. I wish that it was Clarence Thomas (do I like this fella or what).
Obama, war-wise, keeps playing "follow the leader," .... and the leader is still GWB.
No wonder Obie can't please everyone.
August was a real bad month for White House leadership. Let's see what September brings.
Compared To T.Kennedy's military experience, George Bush looks like General Patton.
Lehman in the New Yorker is exactly right.  HCR may not be perfect, may not be exactly what liberals want but there are some major steps forward which will help millions of peope.  We shouldn't forget that in our zest for public option, do or die.  "There is no adequate defense, except stupidity, against the impact of a new idea."  Percy Williams Bridgeman, a scientist, but I think the phrase suits the GOP argument against HCR adquately.

Even the possibility of another Pres Obama SCOTUS appointment will set the GOP's hair on fire!
Did anyone see Mike Dense{Pence} on Morning Joe today? Mike Barnicle asked him twice what he liked in any of the Health Bills, he couldn't name one thing. All he could do was keep saying he would not vote for any bill that had a public option in it. Even if the public option is taken out of the debate, Republicans will never vote for a health reform bill so forget about bipartisanship and pass a bill without them.
