First thoughts: What the doc ordered?

*** What the doctor ordered? For Democratic members of Congress who want to pass health-care reform this fall, President Obama's speech last night was probably just what the doctor ordered. In it, Obama demonstrated some leadership that even he himself admitted was lacking (“The time for bickering is over… Now is the season for action”); he unveiled more specifics (a mandate for employers and individuals, a price tag of $900 billion over 10 years); and he rallied his Democratic troops by invoking the late Ted Kennedy. What they didn’t hear, as expected, was a visible line in the sand on the public option (“We should remain open to other ideas that accomplish our ultimate goal”), although he once again stated his preference for it. Nor did Obama talk about raising taxes on the richest Americans, which probably has to occur to pay for the $900 billion reform. Still, the president sounded more like the guy who was in office the FIRST three months than the guy who has been in office the LAST three months.

*** Meeting his two goals: How will we know if the speech worked? The biggest clue: Whether congressional Democrats have political space to negotiate with each other. They needed the president to do a couple of things -- 1) calm down the political middle that reform isn't going make things worse, and 2) reassure the left that he's got a political spine. On those two scores, it was probably an effective speech. Don't get confused by the mention of Republicans and bipartisan rhetoric (floating the idea of a medical malpractice demonstration project) as the president's attempt to reach out to Republicans. That rhetoric was aimed as much at political independents to re-brand himself as the political pragmatist, adult, moderate, etc. in this debate.

*** Joe Wilson’s War: And what about the other side? Well, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson didn’t help the GOP’s cause one bit. Indeed, the most effective part of Obama’s speech last night might not have been what he said -- but rather what Wilson yelled: “You lie.” It could be an incredibly important moment for the president and the congressional Dem leadership because it does a couple of things: 1) paint a picture of the Republicans as ornery and hard to work with, and 2) remind conservative Democrats that they may not want to line up with folks like Joe Wilson when casting votes. Let’s be honest: Wilson did more to undermine the GOP's efforts to come across as reasonable opposition as anything any conservative cable host has done in the past few months. Remember how conservatives were able to turn Cindy Sheehan into someone very difficult for the anti-war Democrats in Congress to support during the Bush years? Well, Wilson could end up providing that kind of symbolism. In short, he gave voice -- literally -- to the president's attempts to paint some of his opponents as shrill.

*** A verbal sucker punch: Wilson apologized last night in a statement (“I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility") and in a call to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. But the damage was done and it may take a long time to repair. It was a sad day in Washington that polarization has gotten so bad that a member of Congress thinks it's appropriate to shout down the president. So what should Wilson's punishment be? After all, it was a verbal sucker punch, and we just saw one football player get suspended for the year for a sucker punch. By the way, the DCCC tells First Read that in the eight hours since Wilson's outburst, his Democratic opponent in 2010, former Marine Rob Miller, has received nearly 3,000 individual grassroots contributions, raising about $100,000.

*** What about the public option? The most fascinating part of reading the punditry and analysis of the speech is to see the number of DIFFERENT ways folks are reading between the lines regarding the president's stand on the public option. So on this score, he did NOTHING to clear up his position on this subject. Obviously, he made it pretty clear there's wiggle room here. And check what one liberal/progressive member of the House Dem caucus said last night to MSNBC’s Ed Schultz:  “The progressives … are going to have a hard time just ignoring the president… The face that he showed he’s willing to get tough, I think may back some people down. I think some people were taking him for granted.” Folks, the public option needs an "al" at the end of the word option; the idea is "optional."

*** Other observations: The president decided to eliminate the illegal immigrant total from the uninsured estimates, so suddenly instead of 46 million uninsured the president put the number at approximately 30 million… What was under-reported was the financial trigger he promised. It strikes us as a "made for C.B.O." idea; that is, it's about making sure that his plan will score as deficit neutral… On TODAY this morning, Vice President Biden said he expects a "bill before Thanksgiving."

*** So what’s next? Need more evidence at whom last night’s speech was aimed? Just look at the president's schedule today: At 10:15 am ET, President Obama will deliver a few more remarks on health-care reform and will meet with his cabinet 30 minutes later. Then, later this afternoon, he meets with moderate Senate Democrats to discuss health care. According to NBC’s Ken Strickland, the invitees are members of the Moderate Dem Working Group and represent critical -- yet unsecured -- votes. For many of them, the notion of a government run health insurance program is a trouble spot and possible deal breaker. “I believe that we can make necessary reforms without creating a purely public, new government entitlement program," moderate Blanche Lincoln said in her statement following the speech. Still, the moderates were generally supportive of the president's broad case for healthcare reform, but none of them was moved enough by his speech to offer blanket support. "There are still obstacles ahead and I'll need to be convinced on some issues," Alaska Sen. Mark Begich said.

*** On to … Minnesota! However, it’s interesting that the White House has decided to do its first rally after the speech in the Democratic state of Minnesota. Not Nebraska, not Maine, not Iowa. In fact, he's going to the state which awarded his party its 60th Senate seat. Again, it's more evidence that the president's goal now is to unite the Democrats and do whatever it takes to keep the party together on this. In the Senate, that COULD mean wooing Republican Olympia Snowe whose support then gives cover to folks like Ben Nelson and Lincoln.

*** A goodbye and a welcome: Yesterday, retiring Florida Sen. Mel Martinez gave his farewell address from the Senate floor. Today, at 2:45 pm ET, his temporary replacement, George LeMieux, gets sworn in by Vice President Biden.

*** Austin City Limits: Finally, the Democratic National Committee today begins holding its fall meeting down in Austin, TX. (How did the DNC score hotel rooms during football season? Well, the Longhorns are on the road this weekend…)

Sudden thoughts and second thoughts

For the second time in 2 weeks, I watched President Obama thoroughly capture the attention of everyone in the room.  First it was Senator Kennedy’s eulogy, and again last night when the President evoked the memory of Senator Kennedy and talked about the character of our country.  We are viewing people who looking at him, and realizing why he was elected and why he is so good.  You could have heard a pin drop in the House chamber last night during the last part of the speech.  Everyone, and I mean everyone, was riveted in on the President.

Why?  Because they know he is better than they are.  They know he is smarter and has better vision than they do.  They know that he is better capable of multi-tasking complex issues than they can.

You can moan & groan all you want about health care.  You can moan & groan all you want about wing nuts, “birthers”, tea-baggers, and Republican House members from South Carolina.  What you cannot moan & groan about is the person we call President.  He’s simply that good.

Take a look at the preamble to the Constitution, and tell me what it states.  Now look up the oath of Office for a U.S. Representative and a U.S. Senator.  Something about swearing to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America” is the keystone phrase.  So can you surmise that every member of Congress not backing this bill is guilty of malfeasance?  They are all falling short on ensuring domestic tranquility (shouting down the President, obnoxious town hall meetings), and are definitely falling short on promoting general welfare.

Why don’t we change the reform legislation to Insurance Reform?  As far as I can tell, nothing is wrong with the medical care we receive from our doctors, nurses, etc.  It’s the insurance company wedge between your doctor and you that is the problem.

Why don’t we insist on 2 major bills?  One bill should cover all the regulatory and legal reforms (no more refusing pre-existing conditions type stuff), and the other bill would encompass the new forms of coverage.  Seems quite clear the former would pass rather easily.

I know everyone is going to shout down Representative Wilson, but weren’t you also repulsed by Cantor texting?  What a jerk!
Now that’s what I’ve been talking about… that is the man that I worked my butt off & voted for…

My President didn’t disappoint last night (although I have to admit I had a doubt or two that he wouldn’t come out strong enough )!

What a marvelous speech!  I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again… I voted for the right man at the right time for the right job!

As for the mind blowing LACK of etiquette displayed by a truly disturbed Congressman last night I’m going to trust Karma to take care of that piece of sh*t!

In a funny kind of way when I heard it… the first thing that popped into my mind was…
How did NoJoAllBlow, NJ get invited… she’s got no problem calling OUR President a liar all day every day!  Even though she’s the one that’s been exposed as the phony liar over & over… But hey if BS polls get her through her day… than whatever ‘floats her boat’…

Anyone want to make a 'friendly wager' on how many times we see the word 'teleprompter' today here at FR??

Oh and another thing… screw bipartisan watching McCreepy this morning on the Today Show told me all I needed to know about the Republican’ts intentions…
Leadership Is Bringing People of Opposing Views Together:

Last night our president spoke to the Democrats and the American people.  The Grumpy Old Politicians were present, sitting there like bumps on a pickle…Except for Republican Joe Wilson from South Carolina who totally embarrassed himself in front of the entire world.

President Obama eloquently laid out his goals of: 1) Not being denied insurance due to pre-existing causes, 2) Not being dropped from coverage, 3) If you like your coverage, you can keep the insurance you have. 4) No cap on coverage, and 5) limiting out-of-pocket costs to individuals. Almost all Democrats and a few Republicans could agree on these goals.

Clearly our president has not caved-in to the insurance companies.  Clearly he is arguing on behalf of Main Street Americans. Clearly he spoke to the progressives and perhaps shamed some moderates to rethink their position. Clearly he spoke to seniors and veterans that their Medicare and VA benefits will not be lost. Clearly he spoke of his support for the public option. Clearly he is ready to challenge the lies from the conservative right.  Clearly the burden of choice is on the Republicans. (Do they cooperate or remain the party of “No”?)

So what can people take away after listing to our President?

Many Republicans went home last night realizing that they will not win this fight and as individuals each must decide what will be their personal position.

Insurance company executives went home last night knowing that their glory days of fleecing the American people will soon come to an end.

Fifty million Americans without insurance went to bed last night knowing that someday soon they will be covered.

On a personal note: My wife and I worked hard to get this president elected. President Obama has not let us down.   He once said, “Every day I am in office I will work on your behalf.”  He is keeping that promise.
Christianity at its finest moment, courtesy of Bob Jones Univerisity !

Will the people of South Carolina feel any Shame for this? Some will, Most won't!

Until an example is made (such as having congressional officer's escort Mr. Wilson from the scene of the Crime) there will be many more Jaw dropping instances in our Near Future.

Last night's episode of Comedy Central from the RightWing Taliban should be another dagger in the Heart of Republican's, Courtesy of Independent Voter's!
I loved when the President talked about requiring irresponsible people to get insurance. I would like to start the dialog on requiring irresponsible people to maintain good health. As patriotic American the time has come to stop talking about healthcare as a right and start talking about it as a responsibility. Whether this reform goes through or not a great deal of our tax money is being spent on healthcare through Medicaid and Medicare. It is irresponsible for individuals to lay the tax burden of unnecessary poor health at the feet of responsible citizenry. Through sloth, gluttony, and apathy many of our citizens have increased burden on those of us that choose a healthier path. There is consensus within the scientific community of what a healthy lifestyle entails. It is time to develop the standards to lead our country forward. Think of the tax moneys that could be saved by limiting the consumption of a few things proven to be bad for your health. Items like cigarettes, hard alcohol, and fatty foods should be limited or eliminated altogether. Diets and exercise regimes should be developed and enforced. People failing to live responsibly should be fined to offset the tax costs they are adding to the country. Programs should be developed to educate obese and unfit people and train them to live better lifestyles and know what is good for their bodies. It costs less to educate people and help them stay healthy then it does to bring them back to good health medically. This would save more money than anything else I’ve seen proposed. Some people may say it is no one else’s business what they do, but if the rest of us have to flip the bill for your irresponsible lifestyle then I say it absolutely is our business.
A new day.

Who knows what FALSE controversy the Right Wingnuts will come up with to divert attention from real issues?

And the Media is always ready to blow their trumpet where a minority party is given a far larger public platform.
Well...the President fit right into prime time.  It was like a comedy.  I absolutely outright laughed at some of his lines that clearly weren't true.  Good to see that some newspapers at least fact-checked some of those statements.  Of course, news media coverage was glowing and adoring as always.

Joe Wilson certainly didn't help things on the conservative side.  Just sit quietly and then talk to the media afterwards.

I thought the Republican response was very effective.  He mentioned NON-PARTISAN CBO numbers which clearly contradict Obama's numbers.
United We Stand

I know there are going to be differences of opinion within the Democratic Party. No one, and I mean no one, is going to get 100% of what they want. The democrats consist of legislators from every part of the country, including red states. We are fortunate to have them in our party to help President Obama with his agenda going forward. Disagreements are going to happen as it is part of the process. Let us hope/demand for two things. That every single American be in a position to afford health care. And that NO ONE  in the Democratic Party sell out the American people and give in to the insurance industry. This is all I ask of President Obama going forward.

I have resented from the get-go President Obama’s determination to make this a bipartisan bill. The GOP do not want anything to do with this health care reform legislation. But I have to say, last night the president again told the Republicans that his door is still open if they had anything to offer. Very very classy.

Gone forever are Karen Hughes and Karl Rove and Andy Card and Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay.

We have David Axelrod. How refreshing. We need to keep it this way.
___________

Did anyone happen to catch this morning on Morning Joe that as Eric Cantor was brought on as a guest, in the background the song “I Used To Rule The World” was playing. Lol
FR: For Democratic members of Congress who want to pass health-care reform this fall, President Obama's speech last night was probably just what the doctor ordered.

^^^^^^^^^^

The House whips just did a vote count yesterday. 44 Democrats will vote against any plan that has the Public Option. 65 different Democrats will vote against any plan that doesn't have the Public Option. All Republicans will vote no no matter what.

Obama's Health Care Reform has been checked by the doctor, and it is D.O.A.
And anything new from the speech? Nothing. More of the same for the 28th time.
BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! to the left prompter, BLAH!BLAH!BLAH! to the right promter. Same crap different day.

Obama can't sell it because it isn't a good product. Obama can't sell it cause nobody wants it. Stop your freakn' whining about cable and talk radio. They're doing their job by checking your lines of BS out. Turns out you're lieing most of the time. Time to stop bashing this bad idea to death and move on to your next bad idea of amnesty to all illegas aliens.
Republican’t definition of bipartisianship:

McCain:  This is HOW we are GOING to DO this…

Reid:        John let’s talk about it…

McCain:   NO!! NO!! NO!!!

There it is in a nutshell….
Maybe if Obama had run something, like a KFC, then we could believe that he knows what he's talking about for running health care. But I guess those are "Details that will get worked out later".
Obama: "Now is the season for action."

Got that one right - The NFL season starts tonight!
Republican lawmakers were shown holding up draft GOP bills during the speech.
Is this the same one that John Boehner said would be ready “in a few days” over 6 weeks ago?
And it’s still in ‘draft’ form!
Republicans still criticize the bills and yet they are unable to come up with one of their own, as promised.

What’s with that?

While the Democrats were busy writing bills what were the Republicans doing?
Sitting on their hands?
No, wait, they were working on how to delay and destroy HCR just as the Health Insurance Companies paid them to do.
There Is a Time and a Season for All Things

Rep. Joe Wilson (R) SC finally did what was expected and what has been transpiring during the month of August recess. The lies and political cheap shots at the President and lawmakers those are realistically sensible to the needs of the American people as opposed to the lies of stupidity have finally came home to roost.

They’ve lied so much, that some actually believe those lies themselves. The apology that Wilson issued was unacceptable in my opinion and his collogues should call for his resignation.

A stiff sentence? Perhaps to some it may be. But in my opinion, it should be required. There is a time and a season for all things, and last night’s outburst of politically intentional outburst of disrespect was not the time.

I think that it was a planned outburst. Wilson is an insignificant figure in Congress, there fore he became the sacrificial lamb. If the outburst wasn’t planned and the republicans are truly sorry, then he should be asked to resign.

Actually every Senator and Congressman that lied and stirred up the far right fringe that demonstrated domestic terrorism and racist hate, along with their personal feelings should resign. I’ve stated it once and I’ll state it again; “elected lawmakers that participated in false accusations against the president, should be expelled from office”. They are unstable in their thinking and therefore have demonstrated the inability of maintaining leadership, or making sound decision on behalf of the American citizens.

Each member that that displayed childish booing and hissing in the “Chamber” of Congress should be stripped of their duties. Every lie that they’ve instigated had been debunked and therefore, the display of disrespectful actions should be dealt with swiftly.

Eric Cantor: "Obviously, the President of the United States is always welcome on Capitol Hill. He deserves respect and decorum. ... I know that Congressman Wilson has issued an apology and made his thoughts known to the White House, which was the appropriate thing to do."

Put up or shut the f*** up, there is a time and a season for all thing, and last night wasn’t your time republicans.
Keep throwing the same tired speech at the people, and hope it will stick this time.

Many independents have woken up from the mesmerizing Obama trance. No amount of MSM carrying Obama's water is going to do the trick this time.

Only a few months ago, the Democrats looked invincible and were talking about permanent Republican minority.

Now they will be happy if they can maintain the majority status in 2010 midterms.

Funny how the fortunes vanish so quickly!
I'll check back when the "significant details" are worked out.
Biden just said that they'll be a bill by Thanksgiving. Wasn't it Biden/Obama that said they would be a bill by August?
Kudos to congressman Wilson, for telling it like it is.
Obama has lied about A LOT of things, and the mamby-pamby media (FIRST READ included) never calls him out on it.
The insurance companies have to answer to someone, the way they work now is not right for  the majority of the people.  The insurance companies are in it for profit, and only their Profit- they let people die while they jerk them around, while cost goes up & up, and their profits go up and up. People need a Public Option, before 3/4 of people in our country go bancrupt, and or die while trying to get proper care for their serious health problems.
Hope all the Democrats looked around at themseleves last night, enjoyed each others company. Because come January/2011 many of them won't be there anymore, and it's all because of the guy that spoke to them last night. Obama is clueless about what he's trying to do, and the Democrats will pay big time at the polls next year.
Thank you Joe Wilson, you did more to help pass HRC than even Klondike Sarah and her making stuff up remarks. You pulled the mask off the repukes and exposed the right wing for what they truly are. Impossible to work with, and NO as their mantra. The right wing is always yelling we want our country back, seems to me that issue was settled last november, when the rest of us took OUR country back from the mouth breathing, knuckle dragging, racist trash, aka the GOP. Thanks Joe.
Joe Wilson needs to resign. He disrespected the office of the President, shamed Congress, and embarrassed the republicans. The right thing is for him to immediately resign.

But I doubt that will happen. It occurred to me this morning that the reason the republicans have fired up the lunatic fringe is that they themselves act just like the lunatics they are trying to get to disrupt debate, stop progress, and generally be impossible to work with.

Here's my question about the republican approach. They don't like ANYTHING in the bill, even though many of the ideas are from them, or at least supported by them before this bill came about. So why is it so hard to say, "Look, we are the minority party, and we aren't going to write the bill. So lets provide input as to where we think the bill needs the most work."

For example, Democrats have insisted the bill doesn't cover illegal immigrants. They clearly don't want it to and have not designed it to cover them. So why doesn't a republican congressional rep provide revised wording that makes it clear to them it doesn't cover "illegals."

Republicans say the bill has death panels. Clearly the Democrats (and most other rational people) don't believe that. But why can't the republicans offer wording changes that clarify the purpose and scope of the "end-of-life" consults. For example, change the wording to, "The plan will pay for end of life consults for the purpose of determining what actions a person wants doctors to do to preserve their life."

The republicans are like spoiled younger sibblings! They will only be happy if they can write the entire bill and if it doesn't include anything the Democrats want. President Obama, on the other hand, has opened the door for removing the public option and even for tort reform, one of the pet ideas that the republicans will not let go of. So the President has given something up, now it is time for the republicans to give something up!

We're waiting!
Q) How can you tell when Barrack Obama is lying?

A) His lips are moving.

Obama's plan? Nobody even knows if there is a public option in his plan. You know the biggest part of what Obama wanted months ago, but he has been throwing cold water on since then.

Maybe Obama is just so smart, that only he understands himself? That must be it.
for me the moral issue was the most important thing the president said last night!!! it is wrong for the united stated of american to be the only industrialised country to not provide its citizens health care!!!
this is wrong.
but i loved it when he said that he is not the first president to tackle health care, but he will be the last.  that was great, he also gave a shot to the republican and demicrats who passed those 1.2 trillion in tax cuts 8 years ago!!!! lets face it folks, if the demicrats had faught former president bush on those tax cuts like the republican are fighting on health care, maybe the deficts would not be as bad as they are. so what i'm saying it the demicrats are just as in the worng as the republicans are now. great speach, BUT, will it change any thing!!!! that my question. the blue dog dems as well as some house republicans are the ones who are holding this up and the president called them all out!!

as for joe wilson,
the president needs to call him in to his office with john Mccain, have him sit down, make sure he is relaxed, give him a cup of coffee. then have John McCain, slap him around, then the president should just give him a real south side of chicago ass kicking!!!

I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANY THING LIKE THAT IN MY LIFE!!
that was wrong, and if the people in his state don't take care of the nitwit, then i wish he could be kicked out of congress. his voters did not send his to washington to heckle the president. but he is from South Carolina so may be they did!!!!
you know south carolina is a red neck state and the are sick to there stomach that we have a black presdient!!!!
last night was a great speech, but will it change any thing?
Congressman Wilson I have a question for you, ok?  How would you have responded if a Democrat had done the same thing to georgie?  Bet you would have been screaming your silly head off about it, yes I do.
Time for the GOP to fess up, and the Democrats too, I want a list of each and every member of congress (both parties, independents, both house and senate)who owns stock in a health insurance company.  I got a feeling that both of my US senators probabably own quite a lot, but never come clean about why they are so eager to protect the likes of BCBS. I have written to both my US senators in support of the president's plan, a public option and gave them good reasons why I support both, one has answered me with his usual, I'm working hard for you jibberish which is not true, the other has yet to answer my letter, and neither has my congressman.  Instead they listen to folks who have never worked in healthcare or folks who have never had bad care dictated by the health insurance companies - go figure, guess it is all the proof I need of who they are representing.
The devil may be an attorney, but the devil's handmaden is always the health insurance industry and all the CEO's who run them.
Rahm Emanuel: It was a sad day in Washington that polarization has gotten so bad that a member of Congress thinks it's appropriate to shout down the president.

The Democrats used to do with flair with Bush. Reid even called Bush a "Loser" and a "Liar" on the Senate floor as Bush was traveling overseas. Apparently Rahm forgot when Bush gave one state of the union speech, the Democrats booed and hissed him. Democrats have short memories and thin skins.
The president spoke quite well last night, but said relatively little.  That’s typical for this president.  His rhetoric can be grand, sweeping and soar to the heavens.  But when you look for the substance, be prepared for disappointment.  Or for scratching your head at misleading statements.

Like when he said his plan would cost around $900 billion over ten years.  As the Washington Post reports this morning, that number or any specifics that would lead you to that number is nowhere to be found in the plan posted on the White House website.

Or when he spoke with such sincerity on standing by the principle that “if Americans can’t find affordable coverage, we will provide you with a choice."  Sounds good, but as the Post also reports if his plan truly does cost $900 billion then there isn’t nearly enough money in it to guarantee that choice.

Or when he said nothing in his plan would require anyone to change their coverage or their doctor.  Strictly speaking this is true, but it’s also misleading.  The reforms being discussed may not ‘require’ anyone to do anything, but employers may conclude it is in their self interest to stop offering coverage thus forcing their employees to get coverage on the new insurance exchange.

But I carp, although I carp for a reason.  When the President of the U.S. stands before the country and calls some of his critics liars, then that raises the bar for measuring the veracity of his own statements.  And the president failed to clear that bar in several instances.  Normally I might cut speakers some slack on things like that because after all, all politicians exaggerate.  But not today.

Yet to me the most telling phrase in the speech was his statement that there was agreement in Congress on about 80% of the content of HCR.  That’s actually a notable achievement, that folks with different points of view have found that much common ground on this knotty issue.  That 80% represents incremental HCR with broad support.

But it’s that pesky little 20% that’s still left that could be the undoing of everything.  Particularly if the leftist fringe insists on the public option.  So as the adults go back into the room to flesh out the details of HCR that still remain, their challenge will be to avoid pressure from the left that could potentially destroy the centrist consensus that already exists on most of the package.  What was it some wise man once said?  Something about ‘the perfect is the enemy of the good.’  Those who insist on their view of perfection run the risk of damaging the prospects for passage of any HCR.  And that would be a Waterloo moment of their own making.
The only way Joe Wilson can make up for the total affont to the President is to resign. He called the President a liar during a speech which is absolutely unheard of! The Rethugs have gotten by with far too much bad behaviour already and they think they can treat President Obama like a second class citizen. Wilson apologized for having a differing opinion, but not for calling the President a liar, when it was he, Wilson, who is the liar!

I fear for the President's safety every single day and the birthers, deathers, and other obstructionists will see this as an opportunity to do something more harmful to President Obama if this type of unacceptable behavior is not handled forcefully. He is our President and deserves every respect that office entails.

BTW, I'm still waiting for my home town to place his picture and that of the VP in the Federal Building. I will not rest until it is placed there, as all other previous POTUS have been.
Obama came into office saying he was a uniter. So, what exactly has he united? His own party is fractured.
All during the campaign, I had the vague feeling that Obama reminded me of someone, but simply could not draw the connection.  During his speech last night, I was finally able to see clearly of whom it was that he reminded me.

There is another who came from humble beginnings, and, against all odds, succeeded beyond even his family's wildest imaginings.  He, too, grew up in relative poverty, attended college on academic scholorships, worked long and hard hours to excell.  His focus was also to help others achieve.  Under his brilliant, charismatic leadership, those who would have been left behind were able to rise above their previous circumstances.  After a time, there were those who listened to his detractors, and began to lose faith.  Yet, in his calm, confident manner, he was able to reassure most, and strengthen their weakening faith in his abilities.  Thus reassured, rather than defecting, their faith was redoubled, and their belief in him was contageous.  Those who had once doubted were the most effective in bringing his message to others, and drawing them to his fold.

And then, the day of reckoning dawned, and all of Bernie Madoff's true believers went broke.

FR--What they didn’t hear, as expected, was a visible line in the sand on the public option (“We should remain open to other ideas that accomplish our ultimate goal”), although he once again stated his preference for it.

First Read, what public option? You posted an article with facts that there never WAS a public option mentioned by the President. This is another attempt to continue to stir up the Liberals and American public.

I understand "what" the President is saying. I understand the law that he is proposing. He said so in his speech. So what did I hear that you didn't? What did I and millions of others heard that you didn't understand?

*** What about the public option? The most fascinating part of reading the punditry and analysis of the speech is to see the number of DIFFERENT ways folks are reading between the lines regarding the president's stand on the public option. So on this score, he did NOTHING to clear up his position on this subject.
-------------------

There is no so called public option and you people should be ashamed of yourselves for putting this garbage out here in attempts to stir up strife and contention. You are bordering on Fox noise with this rag article.
Here we have it again. The Democrats are telling America what there plan isn't, not what it is. The Democrats spend 90% of their time saying the plan isn't this, it isn't that, but they never get around to telling America what it is. That's left to the Republicans to do, and they have done it very well. That's why a strong majority of people in the country don't want what Dr. Obama is trying to sell.
Fr: “The progressives … are going to have a hard time just ignoring the president… The face that he showed he’s willing to get tough, I think may back some people down. I think some people were taking him for granted.” Folks, the public option needs an "al" at the end of the word option; the idea is "optional.

The President never ceases to amaze us. Hildebrand said he knows the president's heart and I think I do too. Community organizers care; Astroturfer's don't. That way he's called NO DRAMA OBAMA.

the Party of No or the dopes of Nope showed this nation just how much of a lying group of hypocritics they are ;especially tht Joe Wilson. He knew what the President was going to say. Not only should he apologize he should be forced to stand before the nation and say I lied.
I wanted to stop you by lying. I didn't undertand the facts I now know from fact check.org...

False: Illegal Immigrants Will Be Covered
One Republican congressman issued a press release claiming that "5,600,000 Illegal Aliens May Be Covered Under Obamacare," and we’ve been peppered with queries about similar claims. They’re not true. In fact, the House bill (the only bill to be formally introduced in its entirety) specifically says that no federal money would be spent on giving illegal immigrants health
H.R. 3200: Sec 246 — NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS
Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.
Also, under current law, those in the country illegally don’t qualify for federal health programs. Of interest: About half of illegal immigrants have health insurance now, according to the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center, which says those who lack insurance do so principally because their employers don’t offer it.

No wonder those thugs at the town halls yell and scream lies.
Ha Ha ... very funny.

Obie's speech on health care started out well with some great points but it tanked when he started to "try" to explain some things about it. He went of course many times and insulted too many watching minds who knew he was not telling the whole story and, yes, like our republican heckler shouted ... LIAR!

Then he begs for help from the republicans who have already handed him 800 different drafts to have them ALL turned down. His line to them, "my door is always open," was complete bulls*** and everybody knew it.

When you know what you know about the essence of being Obie as president and knowing full well that he knew Van Jones' background, as well as all those he chose for his staff and cabinet, you KNOW he doesn't care about character, only his socialist agenda. This radical prez can't be trusted at any level.

Ted Kennedy wrote Obie a letter, to be delivered upon his death, about health care reform, and Obie spent 7 minutes talking about it. Ted still perserveres from the grave. This is your "Night of the Living Dead" nightmare. Kennedy is back to eat your brains.

Thanks Obie, for sucking up to everyone in the room and on television. It won't work, dude. Like that scary movie title from many years ago. "We know what you did and we know who you are."
Congressman Wilson is a buffoon and what he did was a rehearsed response (apology is fake).  I believe that he did this with the tacit approval of the Republican leadership.
Say what you will about these idiots, they are not shy about throwing everything at the President to defeat his initiatives.None of this opposotion is about HCR, it is about defeat the Negro. Bi-partisanship is not going to happen and the Republicans blame it on Obama because he wont implement their plans. What!

The fact that there is a 30% increase in gun sales the last quarter (what recession) tells me everything I need to know about the mood of the country accepting a bi-racial man in the White House. Someone out there is waiting for their chance at infamy by taking  a shot at the President.
This country is in for a long national nightmare.
Imagine Joe Wilson authoring a bill and trying to get it through the Congress...hmmmmm..NOT.

The voters of the 2nd District of SC deserve better.
Please support Rob Miller, a true hero, a marine and someone who may actually help the State and District.
Does Obama enjoy having a trained seal stand up and clap for him? Oh, wait, nevermind, that was Pelosi.
No public option, no bill...House
No bill with a public option...Senate
Any option so long as I get something passed...Prez

Healthcare...solved...:)
Joe Wilson will be hailed as a Hero on Fox and RW radio for speaking standing up to the facist socialist commie who wants to take away our freedom.  Of course this is just another example of the leaderless, rudderless GOP lemmings taking their political stances and talking points from the Rush, Sean Hannity, and Glen Beck talking heads.  The White House used to feed talking points to Fox, now the RW media feed the talking points to our elected officials.  The RW media has set the tone and level of un-civil, un-critical discussion to the point where members of congress think it's acceptable to yell at the President of the United States.

Any thing Joe Wilson will ever stand behind the meaning of his words??  Yes he apologized for the outburt but will he ever stand up for Fox's and RW Radio's BS that the Presiden was lying?  What page of the bill does it state illegal immigrants will receive benefits under HCR????

If members of Congress want to yell un-informed, half-baked, misleading, BS they can go find a street corner.  There are other individuals (from either party) who would be willing to step in for them and do the work of representing will and best interests of their constituants.
Very good Mr President."It's hard to stop a man that knows he's right and keeps on coming" Yes there were some very revealing moments last night. It would be better if some of the more intelligent members of our legislative branch would set down with serious thoughts on working this out rather than setting around waving papers and shouting out.I would applaud any effort you could make to assist these folks in order for the debate to go to a higher plane. I would also say that you also right in not aiding and abetting them in thier continuing attempts to marginalize themselves. We need to get this done in some palatable form so that we can move on to many issues that are affecting our continued well being both financial and diplomatic.
A great speech.  He again demonstrates his
leadership skills.

And Joe{the Jerk) needs to be spanked at put to bed without supper.

Remember him this next election S.C.
Yup President Obama gave us a speech that was just what the doctor ordered.  Where did the party of sore losers dig up that clueless Boustany clown?  Just goes to show how hard up they are to find a real smart politician that can offer a real rebuttal to President Obama.  Barney Frank hit the nail on the head last night as he quipped that Low Blow Joe Wilson was like tugging on Superman's cape.

Good to see President Obama go invade the turf of that clueless Bachmann Moron Overdrive in Minnesota.  Hey specking of Minnesota did you see the recent video of Senator Al Franken doing a freehand map of the US for a crowd?  I bet there isn't a repugnant one politico who could draw a freehand map of the USA the way smart Al Frankien did.

So Low Blow Joe Wilson is the same creep who was Osama bin Laden's pal in Afghanistan during the Ronny Raygunz era of incompetence and ignorance?  So funny how he made fools out of his whole party with his one outbreak of diarrhea of the mouth.  I loved the way Nancy Pelosi stared that jerk down and Obama just gave it right back to him saying Low Blow Joe was a liar.

In Obama We Trust!
FR: 1) calm down the political middle that reform isn't going make things worse, and 2) reassure the left that he's got a political spine.

85% of the people either like or love their current health care plans. And Obama is trying to change that? Doesn't sound very calming to me. Good luck Ob's.

And what political spine did Obama show last night? Is Obama going to, or not going to, fight for the public option? No one knows. Certainly not Nancy or Harry. So what do Pelosi and Reid fight for knowing that if they get wrong Obama will throw them under the bus?

Obama has the spine of jellyfish. He's the most wishy-washy president since Carter.
I'm fired up and ready to go!  President Obama gave a great motivational speech last night and dispelled the Great Right Lies that the party of sore losers has been abusing to stop health care reform with the public option.  I loved the way he used one of McCain's campaign promises to get old Mac giving him the thumbs up.  Plus McCain rejected and denounced that slimy Low Blow Joe Wilson's lie shout out.  Obama's speech was so good he got McCain to get all mavericky for a couple of moments.  Now to see if McCain can be a real maverick by breaking with his party of sore losers and promise to work with President Obama on HCR and promise to vote for the bill even though it has elements he doesn't like.

Isn't it ironic that the evangelical christian lunatic fringe clings to the godless soulless corporations who are hell bent on ripping us all off?  There must be some new commandment that Thou Shalt Obey Your Corporate Masters.  I seriously doubt that jesus would be in thrall to corporate masters the way the plastic jesus crowd is.

Last night Low Blow Joe Wilson showed us what kind of white trash politicians come from South Carolina.  With Jim Demented and Adulterer Sanford Low Blow Joe Wilson has shown us how perverted the white politicians of South Carolina are.  Funny the best politician to come out of SC is James Clyburn, a balck man.

Impeach Low Blow Joe Wilson!
While I thought as a speech the president did okay, in reality what fears did he relieve?  Just because he tells us "don't believe the lies" about federally mandated abortion or rationing of care,..etc, he gave no specifics to guarantee those things.  For example on the abortion issue, will he be willing to craft specific language that guarantees no taxpayer money will cover abortions?  Probably not since so far every attempt for this has been shot down. When you look at promises this president and other dems have made to pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood that they seriously believe abortion coverage should be mandated and expanded, it's completely unrealistic to just assume they'll now turn back on that.  And with rationing, Okay we believe there are no specific death panels (men in white robes waiting to kill elderly folks)...but what happens in a few years if costs are higher than expected (which most expect will happen)...Pres Obama said if that happends new cost reductions will be mandated.....Well, where and to whom?  THat's where the rationing will come...only then it will be deeemed as "necessary".  His speech to me was very partisan and unspecific when it comes to some of the key issues people have concerns over.  Remember, he wants us to "believe" him.  But we also believed him about earmarks, lobbyists, transparency, bi-partisanship, fiscal responsibility...etc and we have been dissappointed and betrayed.  What makes us want to believe him now?
Absolutely what the doctor ordered.  I've already commented in the previous FR post but--Fired Up, Ready to Go!!!  Character of a nation--I'm still taken with those words as being so true.  How we treat our people defines that character.

Several of us here have tried to emphasize that the public option is not the only good thing in this legislation, and it was good to hear those items spelled out specifically.  Too often we get caught up in our own preference and fail to look at the big picture.  As the author of "Sick" said on Countdown afterwards, the fact that the president specifically is talking about regulating the insurance industry and helping many hurt by that lack of regulation.  As he said, the legislation isn't perfect but what the president laid out will help many.  We need to keep that in mind as the debate goes on.
