Carter: Race plays role in Obama dislike

From NBC's Mark Murray
In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, former Democratic President Jimmy Carter attributed much of the conservative opposition that President Obama is receiving to the issue of race.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man," Carter said. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that share the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans."

Carter continued, "And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply."

Jimmy,

I grieves me also, that the GOP is so blatantly bigoted.
THANK yOU.TRUTH HURTS
It's not just that they're bigoted, Jimmy. It's that they're so proud to be bigots.

Remember GOP, the first step is admitting that you're a bigot
If Michael Steele was a jew living in Nazi Germany, he would have joined the party.
Jimmy Carter ought to know what his peanut brained neighbors down south think like.  He's quite correct to say that the opposition to President Obama has racial roots.  Too many Southerners are still trying to refight the Civil War and want to put blacks in their segregated place.

"Nashville, BOBO bowed to the Saudi's. Remember!!!"

Hey Mb, Valpo - Tyrant Bush kissed the Saudi King and walked around with him holding hands like a couple of gays.  Remember!!!

I just watched this on Nightly News with Brian Williams....

THANK YOU President Carter for having the courage & stating the obvious...

You've always been ahead of the pack... the right wing whack jobs like to have a 'field day' with you but keep in mind it doesn't matter because collectively they have an IQ level somewhere in the lower 60's... so they matter how??
Finally someone calls it like it is.  I have been waiting for someone to call them out.  I was born down south.  I will never return there to live.  Racism stll exists.
Obama is the one that made it cool to be racist.  He is the most devisive president EVER.  So much for his promises to unify the world.
You can tell when the Democrats are down and getting desperate.  They just play the race card.
It's so easy for the Democrats to play the "Race Card" again.  I look at facts, weither your blue, black, white or yellow, what have you done?  What is your track record?   I could care less about the color of your skin, I judge people by their actions.  His actions are associated with his ideological beliefs, and he has no experience with leadership on any level.  He was a Senator from Illinois in his first term.  America was tired of Bush, I'll agree with that, but the choice that was made was wrong.  Popularity is no resume' for leading the second strongest country in the world, China is the 1st, they're banks own the US now.

====================================

No, Eric, Bush did NOT kiss the Saudi king.  He may have shook hands, but did not kiss him.

Modern protocol is to shake hands.  But Obie BOWED DOWN.  The Saudis themselves don't even bow down to the king.  The bowing is reserved for Allah only.
While Carter is correct that some of this anger is racism hiding behind a political face, it will not make one bit of difference, these haters will never change, even when called out on it. I like how so many get all flustered when the question of race come out, How dare we question the motives of these "great american haters", they only have our countries interest at heart, yeah 'bridge for sale'.
The idiot meter just went off the scale. You liberals have got to be the dumbest people to walk on the earth. This is your argument? This is your explanation? You have no proof. You have no clue. It just so easy for you to take a broad brush and try and paint others, others that disagree with you (with very valid reasons I might add), and try to smear them with false rhetoric like this. It you had an ounce of brains, I'd wonder where you got them from. But with your tiny brain stems this is how you react when you are so wrong and so defeated. I actually pity you in a way.
I am sick of the dumb ass libs always playing the race card its old and worn out no place for it in this day and time. Its the economy stupid we can't afford all the spending and taxes. who the hell pays any attention to the peanut man the worse president ever
Opposition to terrible plans equals racism.  So during the Bush years all Dems were racist?  It also shows your own prejudice and hypocrisy to call all southerners racist.  Doesn't that make you elitists?  It is a statistical fact that Northeastern schools are much more segregated that Southern schools as a whole.  Are we really listening to to Jimmy Carter anymore after the way he went down and kissed Castro's and Arafat's butt?  This is the man you are hooking your plow to?  Sad day in the Dem party.  Where are the GDIs when you need them.
The Dolts on the Left all go back to their Queen Bee, in this case Carter. The racist people are the Left. They need to perpetuate the myth of racism, else they may actually have to come up with a real reason their ideas are continually shot down. No one like your plans for health care, cap and trade, the deficit, nothing. That isn't racism, that's intelligent arguments. Go take your neo-marxist ideas and try them some where else!
Since when did opposition to tyrannical rule become racism?  I guess every opposed to Hitler and Stalin are now closet racists.
Thank you Former President Carter for speaking out and telling it like it is. I watched your comments on NBC and I am proud that I voted for you for President. I am also from the South and know racism when I see it. I am also very concerned as to the hate that has been unleashed in our Country since President Obama was sworn in. The racism is coming from all areas of our country. Maybe other leaders will speak out as Former President Carter has.
<Shaking head> Sorry folks, but it’s Obama’s character, politics, and the people that he associates with that folks find objectionable, not his complexion.
I didn't vote for Jimmy Carter, either.

Democrats, both of 'em.  Same platform, both of 'em.  Exact same reasons for voting against both of 'em.

I've never voted for anyone just because they're white, either.

China owns 23% of the debt owned by foreign interests.  Japan owns 21%.

China owns 6.6% of the total U.S. national debt.  Japan owns 6.02%.

Of all debt held by the public, foreign and domestic, China owns 10.4% and Japan 9.4%.

Figures as of June 30, 2009.

Let's not overrate China.
Thank you, Mr. Carter! And for the record, I hope Americans realize that if Reagan hadn't rolled-back your Energy Policies, we would never have gotten into our current energy and financial messes... and not into wars over oil in Iraq.

You are a wise man and a kind gentleman. Also, thank you for all your Habitat for Humanity efforts!
who cares what color he is, it's the money , quit spending money, lets get on with deficit reduction (i don't care who started it, just fix it)  and get our boys out of Iraq and Afghanistan (we have cruise missiles don't we)
Thank you President Carter,  I agree - I too grew up in the south and am very sensitive to the behaviour - it has made that impression on me also.  Thank you for speaking out and denoucing this behaviour.  You also mention that you feel that President Obama will triumph over this - I agree also.  You are a good man President Carter.
i agree with president Carter,i feel sorry for americans instead of supporting an honest good president like Obama they let theire racist feelings
delay or block the great man's work.
It was about time somebody spoke the truth about what is happening with all the crazies coming out of the woodwork with their racist ideas. President Carter hit the nail on the head with his racism comments. We better get it togather in this country or we will fall apart as the Romans did.
It's about political ideology and NOT race. I don't like Obama and don't support his policies, and I wouldn't feel any better about him or his ideas if he were white or purple.
CARTER IS AN IDIOT,FORGET THE RACE CARD WAKEUP AND SMELL THE COFFEE. NO ONE EVER SAID THEY WERE SORRY TO BUSH. THE DEMS ARE WEAK AND THEY SHOW IT. THEY NEED TO GET SOME BRAINS AND SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY TO SEE WHAT WE WANT AND STOP FILLING THEIR POCKETS. THIS WILL BE THE WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY IF THEY DONT START QUESTIONING HIM ABILITY,THIS GUY IS JUST ANOTHER CHICAGO CROOK LIKE THE MAYOR.
Carter is an Idiot.
This is not about race, but Political Corruption that exist and needs to be stopped. White, Black, Democrat, Republican, our Financial institutes, Most All are Corrupt. We the citizens need to take this country back, those who say it is race, are Idiots. I bet most all politicians don’t even know how to balance their check books and they are running our country??? shame on us. They are not Business people, but corrupt political figures, looking out for themselves. DON’T VOTE FOR ANY OF THEM,  unless they represent the Citizens of the United States of America.

I am a 56 year old white woman living in a small Texas town.  People in my area are definitely angry because a bi-racial man is in the White House.  It saddens me greatly to think that we have not overcome this.  I don't know if this is the underlying reason for the congressman's outburst, but an outburst such as this during any President's speech should not be tolerated.
I am an African American Nondenominational Christian woman who did NOT vote for Obama. However, out of all of the black people that I know who voted for Obama, only two did so because of his ideology. Every other black person I know who voted for Obama did so because of race, and I think it is going to bite us in the arse when he screws up. In fact, he is the single most presidential candidate that I have ever campaigned so actively against because I not only believe that he is not the best president for us at this time but BECAUSE he is black and I know that all it takes is one black guy to screw up in the limelight to mess things over for the rest of us. I'm not denying racism exists, good ness I've had my share but I'm tired of this crap about the South being so racist because the North is just as bad, if not worse (it depends on whether you'd rather have your racism openly stated (South) or passed off as something else (North)).  However, every person (no matter the color) that I know, including myself, who did not vote for Obama did so because of his ideological beliefs, his lack of experience and his previous actions. Furthermore, unless Mr. Carter has some proof, which is easy to come by via survey, laying a racist charge at the foot of the country is an irresponsible, divisive and unfounded accusation. Because of false accusations like the one made my Mr. Carter, I, and others like me, have been even more afraid of bringing our ACTUAL cases of discrimination to the light, for fear of being lumped in with those who shamelessly "play the race card." Also, when we do, our concerns are not taken as serious because of irresponsible accusations like Mr. Carter's. I am outraged, and I believe more people should be as well, at his ridiculous claims and at a media that helps him spread such filth!
I use to look over Jimmy Carters inexperience and even defended him at times now I would not. He has made a problem for the U.S. Obama like Carter was inexpirenced for the Office of President. It is not his skin color people need to get over it. That is living in the past and we are in the present. We need to work together as most people do in the work force. We are Americans and if you are not happy in this Country pick another one. I was raised a democrate and now I am not either party I am a independent. In my life time and History I believe Truman was our best president.
Carter you are a peanut brain and youre trying to start a race war in this country. What is wrong with you? Most citizens of this country are sick and tired of you and the liberals have nothing to stand on except the "race card". I have lost all respect for you and the democrats. White people put NObama in office. YOU ARE AN OLD MAN AND SHOULD STAY OUT OF POLITICS. You have done more harm to this country than anyone I can think of.
Carter is a weak passivess who allowed Iran to hold hostage and torture 53 Americans for 444 days.  He has become a cowardly liberal democtrat pawn!  He was one of the worst presidents in history and in his old age is even a bigger IDIOT!
I expect that anyone elected to the highest office in the USA to be held to the highest standards.  No excuses.  It is you who are racist, by making excuses for inept behavior.  It is like you are saying:"He is only a black man, so what do you expect."  Anyone who is in politics should have a thick skin and if he is able to dish it out, he should be able to take it too.
I will hold my president to highest of standards, and if he can not do that, he should not be in office.
The conservative bigots should admit they have racial tendencies too. Nobody can lay absolute claim to America. Afterall, their fore-fathers came to America as a bunch of expelled criminals. They have to accept the reality of a black President. At least for the next eight years. Dr Tayo Ajayi
