House votes to de-fund ACORN

Posted: Thursday, September 17, 2009 2:20 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Luke Russert
The House, in a motion to recommit attached to the student loan bill, has voted overwhelmingly to de-fund ACORN.

It was a bipartisan vote, with more than 300 members voting for the measure. (We'll get the full numbers/vote breakdown shortly.)

This goes further than the Senate did; the Senate took money out of one bill. This is to de-fund the group completely -- for any money the House would appropriate.

*** UPDATE *** House Minority Whip Eric Cantor's office just sent around this statement:

“ACORN has violated serious federal laws, and today the House voted to ensure that taxpayer dollars would no longer be used to fund this corrupt organization. All federal ties should be severed with ACORN, and the FBI should investigate its activity. This united Republican effort to defund ACORN is a victory for the rule of law and taxpayers across the country.”

*** UPDATE 2 *** The vote was 345-75.

*** UPDATE 3 *** In case anyone cares, student-loan reform (H.R. 3221 - Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009) also passed, 253-171.

Good.
I guess they got the message-ABC, CBS, NBC, et als, may ignore stories, (ala Van Jones), but the internet savvy will find out anyway, and spread the word.

Now, we need to be aware that ACORN will probably just change the name of the organization, and move ahead.  That will have to be exposed when it happens.

Kind of leads one to wonder whatever Obama will do when he gets tossed out of the White House.  No ACORN=no job.
Bravo!
First Van Jones and now ACORN.  It's too bad that the left wing media was asleep at the wheel on these two scoops.
Bravo!!
Good...AMEN.. Im not saying that they have never did anything good, but like anything, the bad outweighs the good and money is not free.

BTW: Im an African American in Houston and I had never heard of ACORN until Obama came around. These clowns have ripped us off for years.
This Acorn thing must be radioactive U-238/235 for the leftists to distance themselves so quickly from their fraudulent vote getting machine.  Hey, Obie, better get a higher Carpenter or Bluebird bus chassis to run over all your "friends" as the pile grows faster than your deficits. Gives a whole new meaning to the gerund "bussing."
The spineless Democrats have yet again bowed to pressure from the minority party of sore losers.  While ACORN certainly hired some really stupid people this is yet another racial attack because ACORN helps many poor people, particularly many black poor people.

Let's not forget that the dopes of nope have their own ACORN, called The Young Republicans.  The Young Republicans did even more insidious voter fraud rigging by fooling people into thinking they were registering as Democrats but getting slammed in as Repugnant Ones.  The Young Republicans got busted here in California for this and they need to be investigated and prosecuted in every state they operate in.

DeFund the Young Republicans Voter Fraud Cabal!
John Boehner a Whinier Shade of Crazy!
Glenn Beck a Joe McCarthy Shade of Crazy!
There must be 50 ways to mash your Acorns.  Use the bus, Gus.
Beck is a four letter word and so is Bush!
funny that there wasn't a whisper about ACORN when the Bush administration and GOP Congress was funding them.  LOL
Eric this was nothing but a witch hunt, conducted by the Neo cons of your party who for years have tried to discredit Acorn, and since the civil rights movement took away the Boss mans labor force you and your party have been trying to stop acorn, well you got your wish,I hope all that they helped have a sit in in your office, for the next year, everyday, coffee anyone?
Wow.  Will Chris Mathews be upset at this assault on the Obama Presidency?
Kind of leads one to wonder whatever Obama will do when he gets tossed out of the White House.  No ACORN=no job.

I doubt President Obama is too overly concerned one way or another.
The Merry Prankster a siamese mutant Motley Fool and Harlequin Ass.
This whole cover-up of Van Jones, NEA and the ACORN makes one wonder what else the former "MSM" has hidden from the American people over the past forty years.  This is very disconcerting.
Well, we can all sleep better tonight knowing that ACORN has been defunded.

*snort*

Now when are we gonna defund the health insurance companies sucking on the government's "Medicare Advantage" teat?

*winky, wink*
Shame on you FR... don't you know by now that any mention of 'Acorn' sends the right wing whack jobs into a frenzy?

Now you've gone & done it... as if they're aren't enough lunatics trying to take over FR you've unleashed the rabid right wing squirrels and given them something else to bitch about...

They'll already crawling out of the woodwork...
Just drop off the key, Lee, and set your Acorns free ....

I sure do hope that the big Wall Street firms are next.  Then the banks.  Then Halliburton.  Then Blackwater.  Then General Motors and Chrysler.  Any other big corporations who took bailout money want to step up to the plate for scrutiny?

I wonder how acorns taste in vodka martinis ...
The Republicans had their own ACORN. His name was Kenneth Blackwell. The irony that he was disenfranchizing African-Americans was not lost on those in Ohio.
Hello,

ACORN has been active since well before I graduated from college in 1980.  What they do is help poor people organize, getr housing aid, and get he proper legals ervices they are supposed to have.  The pay for all if its workers is very low, and the organzation if sull of dedciated people that are willing to work for very little on behalf of people, your fellow citizens, who have even less.

The organzaition has done a great deal for the poor and voiceless in this country, and that is why they are a target of the right wing.  The right wants poor people to be silent and helpelss.  They also want to dissuade them from organizing or developing any type of instrument to affect political action.   That is the sole and only reaosn that they are going after ACORN.  All of the self righteous and wrngheaded comments on this string of e-mnails are coming form peoole that like the system just as it is, that want to keep the poor poor.   How?  By destroying their political instrument.  The right has many, many political instruments.  They are called the GOP, FOX News and many other organizations that all have some plutocrat backing them up.  For instance, Rick Scott, backer of Freedom Works, ran a health care company fined several billion dollars by the Feds for helath care fraud, but somehow, he has enough money to fund an organization to kill health care reforms.

Poor people, on the other hand, in the right's view, must never organize or speak up.  They must remain silent and supine, so that they and all other workers may more easily be exploited.  That is why the right hates labor unions so much.  It empowers workers to challenge their serf like living conditons, and that must be crushed at all costs.  Hence, according to  this logic, ACORN must die.   If you help this along, all you are doing is surrendering your rights as a worker and as a citizen to organize and speak to power.  Happy to do this?

The employees that are on the videos are, without a tdoubt, complete idiots.  Nonetheless, the campaing agaisnt ACORN has nothing to do with worrying about broken lawa or prostitution or anything like that, and has everything to do with silencing and disenfranchising poor people of all races.
no joe, no bo, nj

Really?  Then how come Blackwater is still in business?  And Haliburton?
So, I guess this means it's over for ALL 100+ organizations under the ACORN umbrella including ACORN Housing??? I have a friend that used to work for them and he told me that their National Management had discussed chaning their name after the embellement story broke. I say if they do change their name ALL NATIONAL AND HIGH RANKING MANAGEMENT BE FORCED TO RESIGN!

Hey dumb azz, Mr. know-it-all......

The young Republicans are not federally funded. Your stupid azz is always talking about some BS you know nothing about.

Just STFU and sit down. You definately cant roll with the big dogs. Go back in your corner with Anita and Fiesty....
Now they need to make sure ACORN doesn't get the 8.5 BILLION in "stimulus" money.
Great undercover films showing a group how to avoid paying taxes.

Now! When will we see undercover films showing board  meetings of members of large companies moving their offices to PO Boxes offshore to avoid paying taxes?????
Maybe NBC's ratings would be so poor if they led with stories like this for a change rather than suppressing the news other networks manage to break days earlier.
This will really hurt MSNBC, especially Obermann and Madow.  They were constantly making fun and bashing Beck & Hannity about Van Jone and ACORN.  I guess Beck and Hannity gets the last laugh.  Maybe MSNBC and the MSM should start reporting the news.  Remember Charlie Gibson of ABC saying he hadn't heard anything about ARCORN the other day.  No wonder MSNBC has such a small rating and is constantly getting beat by Fox News.
the Senators that voted against defunding are posted at www.SenateScumbags.com as soon as these 75 are known, they will be posted at www.HouseScumbags.com anyone that can continue supporting an organization that abets child prostitution ought to prepare to be voted out of office.
They should also check out the bank that Mrs. Cantor works at.
Eric, petition to have your ankle monitor removed a.s.a.p. so you can begin working for the first time in your life and pay taxes instead of being the adult-aged teat sucker on the nanny-state.  And please, none of this bovine excrement about your...what is it...accounting business...run out of your mother's basement closet where you hide with your sticky pages of Victoria's Secret and 8-pager library. Eric, the yellow. Eric, the unready. Damned freak!
I don't get this whole thing about ACORN.  From everything I've read the only thing they have actually done is hire some questionable people who were fired as soon as it was discovered that they were doing stupid things like padding their voter registration lists with fake people, and making fake videos to support fake allegations.  If every company who hired people who did stupid stuff was shut down, how many companies would be left?  Doesn't it seem illogical that ACORN gets shut down for a few people doing stupid things while Blackwater and KBR are kept in government contracts even when they kill innocent people and electrocute soldiers?  What's wrong with this picture?
ACORN the most corrupt organization in America and Obama was their lawyer. What does that tell you?
from the Lefties:  "ACORN helps the poor... "

There are 4 kinds of people:  Rich, Poor, Ambitious and Un-ambitious.
Then you combine these: Rich and Ambitious are going to get richer; Rich an Un-ambitious are going to stay the same or lose their money, but not grow; Poor and Ambitious are going to climb higher and they might not get rich but they'll keep bettering themselves; Poor and Un-ambitious will stay poor.

ACORN (and the Libbies) cater to the poor and un-ambitious.

Good deed, ACORN will not take more hard working and poor people's tax money. Also, Robert of Sacramento, CA and Donna from Pasadena, CA, please can we help to understand to Eric in Salinas, CA?  BTW, I've help the Young Republicans, and I am not the Fed Gov.
this whole investigation was actually done by two college kids - not the left or right wing media. infact, there were no actual reporters involved. and I think that congress did the right thing (across the board) by removing all federal funding from ACORN. Now if only they could start doing right by the people on a daily basis...
