Netanyahu, Abbas shake hands

From NBC's Athena Jones
NEW YORK -- The first trilateral meeting between President Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas since the American president took office eight months ago began with a handshake of symbolic importance.

The leaders on both sides of the long-simmering Israeli-Palestinian conflict grasped each other's hands after each shook hands with Obama.

The show of goodwill came after Obama announced that he had asked former Sen. George Mitchell, special envoy to the region, to meet with Israeli and Palestinian negotiators next week, had called on both leaders to send their negotiating teams back to Washington next week to continue these "intensive discussions" and had requested that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to report to him in mid- October on that status of negotiations.

"Simply put, it is past time talk about starting negotiations, it is time to move forward," he said. "It is time to show the flexibility and common sense and sense of compromise that's necessary to achieve our goals. Permanent status negotiations must begin and begin soon, more importantly we must give those negotiations the opportunity to succeed."

Peace has eluded the region for decades, even centuries, but successive U.S. presidents have sought to play an important role in trying to bring about a lasting end to the conflict. There have been varying degrees of progress, but no ultimate success.

"Despite all the obstacles, despite all the history, despite all the mistrust, we have to find a way forward," Obama said. "We have to summon the will to break the deadlock that has trapped generations of Israelis and Palestinians in an endless cycle of conflict and suffering.  We cannot continue the same pattern of taking tentative steps forward and then stepping back.  Success depends on all sides acting with a sense of urgency."

As he reiterated America's commitment to a two-state solution, Obama said the Palestinians had made progress on security issues, but need to do more to stop incitement, that Israelis had facilitated greater freedom of movement for Palestinians and restraining settlements, but must transform words into action and that Arab states must promote peace.

The president met separately with each leader before bringing them together, along with top officials from each country, in this small room at the Waldorf Astoria.

The three leaders and top officials -- including Mitchell, Gen. James Jones, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Chief Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat and Secretary Clinton -- were gathered around a U-shaped table, with two American flags, one Israeli flag and one Palestinian Authority flag in the background.

untill a american president stops kissing Israeli ass there will never be peace.
they have provoked all there neighors, they are screwing Palestin over every chance they get.
if Israeli  can have nucelar weponds then why not iran, they have to protect them selves from israel just as much as israel has to do the same.
they keep building settlement on palestinian land, they keep the palestians locked in gaza like aminials, and if something minor happend they destroy what ever they want, when ever they want and the US does nothen.
the problem with iran is Israel. take the weponds of mass distruction from israel and iran will not need them.  i can understand why iran wants them because Israel has shown they will use them. they almost did back in (i think) 1969. but don't get me worng, untill iran stops denieing the holocost, they will never be a fan of the rest of the world.
i'm not a racist against jews but may god, when are they going to stop acting like muslims want to do them in. last time i checked, Nazis did not like muslims either. what happened to being a good neighbor, WW2 was over 64 years ago.
Again we see the Whine coming from the Rightwing Taliban,'How come the President is on TV to often"?
President Obama is playing Chicago politics with the DC MSM & the DC MSM has No idea how to Stop It.They don't control the Message anymore even with thier Constant Coverage of GOP spokespeople being allowed to Say absolutely anything & the DC MSM pushes it as Gospel!

Fiesty, it's too easy keeping inthemiddle riled up, someone Pisses in his postToasties every morning. It amazes me tho that he still comes on here pushing BS..T. maybe he needs to Fly over the Middle East again & give his Expert opinion on how things are going there. He's a Joke(just like nbnj &little dick from wa state) , not worth the time of day in my Opinion.

One things for  Dauuuum sure, We don't havta watch McCain & Palin being our President & VP. What a Comedy series that wooda been!

Preach On Rush, Sean, Beck & Savage, Preach on brother. Just 1 more Cycle till the Grownups in the GOP finally say" UNCLE" !
How many more billions of dollars is America going to waste trying to buy the peace in the Middle East?
Peace, that ever elusive vision we have.  This time, Pres Obama has picked a good team to work hard with both Israel and Palestine to achieve some measure of that elusive peace we seek.

Read a couple comments today about Morning Joe Monday show.  I caught some of that ridiculous discussion they had about Obama not appearing on FOX and was disappointed.  Did it not occur to them  this one simple reason--why in the world should Pres Obama appear on a TV network that has done nothing but slander him from the first campaign speech to today?  Why reward bad behavior? Plus I wouldn't trust FOX to run the interview in full without editing his answers to suit their whims.

I'm still recovering from the clip of Tom DeLay dancing to "Wild Thing"--that's one of those pictures you'd rather not have floating in your mind.
When will there be Middle East Peace?
Eric, Salinas, CA (Sent Tuesday, September 22, 2009 2:17 PM)
-----------------------------------------------------
There will be peace when those who represent less than 3% of the US population stop controlling 99% of the US Mideast foreign policy.
WHEW.....All of the Middle East problems are over.....Man Obama is a hoot.
DEMOCRAT Jimmy Carter got Israel and Egypt to make nice. That relationship still remains and he got a Nobel Prize for it. Now another DEMOCRAT is trying the route of peace negotiations between these rivals. He may or may not be successful. Let us pray that he is. If successful it will be a major milestone in Middle East peace and he would also deserve a Nobel Prize. Prize or no, we see an effort to get the leaders of Israel and the Palastinian Authority together and talking.
Hey Eric (of Salinas, CA)

You asked....When will there be Middle East Peace?  Probably not any time soon as long as racists like you with anti-Jewish bias continue to blame them for wanting to stay on their land while supporting radical islamic regimes who openly have stated they won't be content until "Israel is cast into the sea".  Israel is not perfect nor ever has been, but they are the best friend we have and the best example of democracy in the unstable Middle East.  But then again, reality like that doesn't matter to those who just want to "play nice" with other nations despite their awful track records.  that's why many who oppose Israel are big United Nations backers who have no problem putting brutal and corrupt regimes as heads of UN Committes like "human rights"...etc.
Hey Eric, while you "trust" in First Read, President Obama, Nancy Pelosi,....and others, many of us in the USA still trust in Almighty God, the maker of Heaven and earth.  We also know His hand is upon Israel and that He promises to "bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel."  Besides that, we have the wisdom to see the friend Israel is to our nation and democracy they exemplify compared to their neighbors in the Middle East.

In Jesus the Messiah, we trust!!!
I don't get the sarcasm. Are we not hopeful that the world can be peaceful?   Are we not hoping that we won't continue to see the same issues over and over again?  I have doubts that this will be settled as well, but are we now ridiculing even the efforts to do something good?  Is that how you consider yourself being a good American?  I thought this country was better than that. Its' fine to object to policies but are we really so stagnant as a society that we'd rather fail completely as a nation than hope that even those that differ from us can work toward a common goal?

By the way, I couldn't help but cheer for DeLay.  He put himself out there and I have to respect that.  He can't dance a lick but I really respect him trying.
Those who hate American success are definitely out in full force today. They are also probably fyling the flag. Dont some hypocrites know when to stop at policy disagreement and applaud American leadership and pray for its success?
but they are the best friend we have and the best example of democracy in the unstable Middle East.

Anit-semites on First Read
look they are only out best friend because of the million upon million we give them. i would be your best friend if you GAVE me the kind of cash we give the Israel.
i looked at a map of Palestin 40 years ago and you would not believe what israel has sone to them. they became radicals because of the land that was taken. i worked with a guy who was from Palestin and he gave me a very instresting anology, he told me what Isreal has done is the same as we american did to american indians. we drove them off there land, we promised payment for there land, just the same as Israel but the difference is Israel never followed through with there promises!!
why because they don't have to as long as american presidents kiss there ass. lets face it, america knew about the holocost as early as 1941, but we did nothen, and they are making us pay for it for the last 64 years.
i'm not a Anit-semites but unitll we as americans see this and be fair, to both sides there will never be peace.
I'm with Jeff, Evanston IL.
IF the Israelies want to attack Iran's facilities, fine.  Just don't ask to use US controlled airspace, and don't expect us to save thier sorry butts once the payback begins.
Foreigners gave Palestinian lands to other foreigners.  How would any of you like it if the UN did that with, say, Texas in favor of Mexico??
Regardless of party, everyone should hope that President Obama can get this done.
