Medvedev on Obama, Iran

From NBC's Andrea Mitchell
According to representatives of the Russian government, Russia's President Medvedev praised President Obama effusively during a question-and-answer session with students at the University of Pittsburgh.

Asked about Iran and sanctions, Medvedev reportedly said, according to a transcript provided by the Russians:

"I have this feeling as though I'm still in the meeting with Barack Obama. Yesterday he asked me this very same question. We spent about a half hour talking about that yesterday! I tried to answer that yesterday and I'll try to answer that today in this beautiful hall.

First of all, we are all responsible for global affairs. Since we share this responsibility, no state should refuse it. In this sense, Russia is a responsible country. All of us are involved in promoting nuclear energy and the right to the peaceful use of it. Iran as a state has a right to its own peaceful nuclear program. This is our clear position. That is what I said to Barack Obama yesterday.

I do not believe sanctions are the best way to achieve results. Sanctions were used on a number of occasions against Iran but we have doubts about the results. Nevertheless when all instruments have been used and failed, one can use international legal sanctions. That is common…I think we should continue to promote positive incentives for Iran and at the same time push it to make all its programs transparent and open. Should we fail in that case, we'll consider other options.

In response to a question on the state of relations between the U.S. and Russia:

I would like to see them better than they are today. But today they are better than they were yesterday. The truth of the matter is, one year ago, I got an impression that our relations had hit a dead end, they almost slid to the level of the cold war. I don't want to blame anybody...The bottom line is, we didn't want that to happen. What really matters is to see to it that the number of differences between our countries, our politicians, be smaller. I am very comfortable with communication with the President of the United States for several reasons. We are of the same generation, we had the same kind of education. When I was a postgraduate student, I read legal reviews at the time that were edited by Barack Obama. Had I known he was an editor, I would have read them more attentively.

The mindset is important. Today, when I'm communicating with the U.S. president, I get the feeling that he's attentively listening. He doesn't preach to you as a mentor, which is not very nice. When you are preaching to others, it's not nice. People like him not only here in the United States but in other countries as well. So he's managed to do certain things that others have failed to do. I believe if personal relations between the leaders are good, then it will be easier to build better relations for the future.

(For example), a recent decision by the President of the United States regarding forgoing the third site on ABM missile defense. Of course, this decision was determined by Barack Obama's mindset.  It was not pro-Russia nor pro-Chinese nor pro-Europe, this was an American decision. What's important is Barack Obama listened to my position. Perhaps it was part of the basis for his decision. We are learning to listen to each other. This is a change from the previous administration. I think these are bold, courageous decisions, to change decisions of previous administrations concerning foreign policy. This was a complex decision. I tried to put myself in his shoes. It would not have been easy for me. It deserves our respect. We don't know what will happen next, but if we are continually attentive to each other, our relations will have a good future.

In short, Medvedv told Obama to go pound sand.
Now if only we could get the Republicans to listen some instead of shouting, "YOU LIE!"

So he saying he played Obama....
This Medvedev character is playing Obama like a fool. What condescending statements towards Obama! Medvedev has seen enough of Obama to know he's a paper-tiger, a phony, and a neophyte. Russia and Medvedev/Putin played Obama out of putting missiles in Poland, and now repay the favor by disrespecting Obama with their public statements. You'd think Obama would learn not to trust the Russians, but apparently he hasn't gotten that memo yet.
So much for 'cowboy' diplomacy there righties!

Can't wait to hear you try to 'spin' this!

Not 'tough' enough my a@@!  Words are mightier than the sword! But then again you still haven't figured that one out...
FR: According to representatives of the Russian government, Russia's President Medvedev praised President Obama effusively during a question-and-answer session with students at the University of Pittsburgh.

Some praise. Lets add up what is being said here. Medvedev ignored the call for more sanctions on Iran. He then goes on to "compliment" the President in a backhanded way, thanks Obama for being such a dolt as to not put missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Medvedev obviously loves working with Obama, mostly because Obama is such a pushover.
Listening, what a concept. Maybe more people, especially those in governments around the world,  should do more of that. The "decider", as President Medvedev opined, was such a non-listener. It is truly a great thing to have a president that listenes. Lincoln was a listener, both Roosevelts were listeners, Jefferson and Washington were listeners. All the greats were listeners. The falilures didn't listen.

As the world's only super power we should be more like the benevolent grandfather than the neighborhood bully. Barack Obama seems to want that too. An old saying goes that you can catch a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Yes we should be concerned about Iran, very concerned, but to overreact would be foolish. If Iran is looking to the future, as many other countries are, and opting for nuclear energy to generate power than, fine, but if the intent is more nafarious than that isn't fine and we would need to stop it. We don't really know their intent right now.

Israel is a small but powerful country. It is quite capable of defending itself. When and if the Iranians are stupid enough to attack Israel and Israel fights back we will aid Israel making Iran the sorriest country on the planet. While Iran may be a threat to Israel they aren't currently direct threat to the US. We have spread our military as thin as we can and still rely on them for our protection. Antagonizing another Middle Eastern country won't help that at all. Our Department of Defense should be just that, defense and not resort to its old name of Department of War.
All the fear-mongering about Russia that will undoubtedly spew forth does nothing to advance the cause of world peace.  Yes, Russia has been an enemy; at one time, so was Japan!, so was Italy!, so was Germany!  Yet we have managed to turn enemies into allies.  This doesn't mean we need to kiss anyone's bu!!, but with nuclear holecaust staring us and them in the face (worldwide) from both foreign countries AND crazy terrorists, all countries will need as many allies as they can get!  Russia is many things, but stupid isn't one of them.  The United States wouldn't have been in a lengthy cold war with a stupid country. We're not that stupid either.  I know, Georgia (the country).  There are those who believe that Georgia started the incident.  We only know what we were told (unless you lived in Georgia at the time).

On another subject, there is a view that if the Palastinians and the Israelies ever got together, they would become THE FORCE in the middle east and elswhere on the planet.  Interesting thought. Someday maybe they will both wise up to their real self-interests.
WOW!  Now *THAT* is change I can believe in!

It's stories like this that make one realize how badly George Bush hurt the image of the U.S. around the world.

In 9 short months, Obama has taken great strides to repair that damage.

Bravo!
FR: "...if we are continually attentive to each other, our relations will have a good future."

Translation: as long as Barack continues to cave to Russian demands, we'll get along just fine.
It deserves our respect. We don't know what will happen next, but if we are continually attentive to each other, our relations will have a good future.

Show respect, earn respect.  It's that simple...and I think our president has led the way in bringing that respect back to the U.S.
DJ, Pittsburgh : In 9 short months, Obama has taken great strides to repair that damage.

What damage would that be? The damage before Iran wipes Israel off the map, or the damage after Iran wipes Israel off the map?
[[It's stories like this that make one realize how badly George Bush hurt the image of the U.S. around the world. ]]

Image? You're worried about "image". Pal, Iran is going to have a nuke is a few months. Something either can be done about it, or not done about it. Think of what the USAs image will be when they let Iran have a nuke, and let them use a nuke on you know who.

Image. You lefties are such a joke.
Talk is cheap but it's a beginning. Although I'd prefer to read about agreements reached and future plans to resolve global issues I realize we've got to repair past relationships and develop mutual trust. its a good start in the right direction.

Star Wars DOESN'T WORK !!

The only thing Star Wars does is make BIB BUCKS for thw WAR MACHINE

WAR BUCKS !!

Why are we so interested in Preserving an Israeli nuclear monopoly in the Middle East ?

The Israelis are a Rogue State
They Proliferated nuclear Weapons Technology to South Africa in the 70's
WHY should they determine who does and doesn't get Nuclear Technology ??

American Law forbids Arms aid to nations with nuclear weapons
The Israelis have nuclear weapons
Enforce the law !!
No what he told them is go ahead let them do what they want if they cross the line take them out you have tried evrything but if a war head is ever launched they are all your President Obama and being these all of these new and Old President's are reader's of History and what not told is how other Nation's even us lately have treated smaller ones we should not keep becoming dictator's for profit if you think I;m jiving go back and see how or what we got into each war Pearl harbor may be differnt and 9/11 had it own legs for retaliation has to take time if you are in a poor nation without the means to attack the people who wronged you check-it out shucks it's been going on 9 years and we have not got our man yet. So we warned them enough if we get concrete proof and it a up inthe air thing Israel has a army we have to stop meddling unless it US SOIL to many have been playing Politics and secrets for a long time and not truthful with the American public.
Apparently some here would rather have people throwing shoes at the President rather than complimenting him.
You only needed to listen to netanyahu's speech yesterday to realize what a pacifist leadership usa is burdened with now.
I think Obama's entry into foreign policy has some small flaws, and I will criticize him as a Progressive along with the Repbublicans.  But so far, I think he is doing a stellar job of "changing" the way we see the World.  A shout out to Hillary also for helping out in this endeavor.
