Obama agenda: economy

White House senior economic adviser Larry Summers decided to engage House GOP leader John Boehner on the issue of the economy.

"In a letter to House Republican leader John Boehner, White House chief economic adviser Lawrence Summers said President Barack Obama "is committed to not repeating the fiscal mistakes of the last eight years."

Summers' letter was in response to correspondence Obama received last week from Boehner and other top House Republicans, who complained that the administration was having no impact on unemployment and recommended a series of tax breaks to invigorate the economy.

Summers replied that the $787 billion stimulus package that Congress passed at Obama's urging contained a mix of spending and tax relief that helped avert a worse economic downturn. He said that while unemployment now stands at 9.8 percent, the pace of job losses is decreasing from an average of 691,000 jobs per month in the first quarter of this year to a 256,000 monthly average in the third quarter."

More: "Summers promised to review the Republican suggestions, which included small business tax exemptions and lowering the 15 and 10 percent tax rates for all taxpayers.

Speaking at an economic conference Monday in St. Louis, Summers said growing unemployment was the most important economic problem facing the Obama administration."

More: "The second half of Summers's letter was devoted to arguing that Republican presidents are to blame for deepening the nation's deficits with "fiscal irresponsibility." In the 1980s, the nation's debt as a share of the overall economy nearly doubled, he wrote. Under President Bill Clinton, who appointed Summers to high-ranking Treasury posts, that trend reversed itself, he said.

Summers added that three major initiatives under Bush -- tax cuts, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a Medicare prescription drug bill -- are projected to add $6 trillion to the nation's deficits."

Right wing backlash for suggesting that continued debt was Bush policy....in 3....2....1
Same old GOP song, just like the last one and the one before that--tax breaks.  Okay Boehner, how does the CBO score it, will it add more to the GOP legacy of debt and give more $$$ to those who have plenty already?  If another stimulus is determined necessary, it should be more infrastructure money to create more jobs--that's trickle down economics that actually works.  Any tax breaks should be limited to small business.

Looks like the Obama adminstration is still campaigning. Recall that the Democrats were in control of Congress for many of those years. Also recall Frank and Dodd blocking legislation that would have prevented the collapse of Fannie and Freddie. So Summers can go blow smoke up someone elses behind, because the American people know exactly what the Democrats did to cause the recession.
"is committed to not repeating the fiscal mistakes of the last eight years."
Standard Dem response
Its Bushes fault.

OK OK OK I will let that stand now the question is What are you doing about it?

Spending our way out of this mess are you.
Hows that working out for you....OH that bad.

They dont have a clue pass the "At least were not Bush"
This Summers character is just too much. Obama ran at solving these problems, but now that he's made them worse, he sends out this yapping dog Summers to cover up the stench of the Obama administrations failures.

Mad man Jim Cramer last night on Chris Matthews with Feisty's beau Larry said the jobs will come later but there should be another stimulus, FDR style. He chided the naysayers with a history lesson and said their "solutions" were right out of Orwell's "1929." Oops, got my numbers mixed up, I must be a Republican...

Wait a second....won't both of these programs inflate the deficit??  Where's the tea-bagging high falootin outrage over the excessive borrowing from china to fund these incidents??

How much will it cost?  Where's the review of the programs?  How can this be that republicans are sliding these tax programs under the door and nobody is complaining about not seeing them and being able to pay for them???

So if the Medicare prescription drug bill will increase our deficits, explain to me how the health care plan being debated, cap and trade and another "stimulus", will not.

Basically, Bush "souped up" the Executive branch and handed the keys over to Obama.

If you believe that the health care reform plan will not increase our deficit, then I've got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell 'ya.
Summers added that three major initiatives under Bush -- tax cuts, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a Medicare prescription drug bill -- are projected to add $6 trillion to the nation's deficits."

Hey wait a minute, are you telling me that the great American president, leader of the consertive world George bush’s policies and spending will add 6 trillion to the deficits, it can't be. Oha my god, this must be a mistake; those liberals must be lying again. My world has come crashing down like our economy almost did.
So your telling me that the 1.2 trillion in tax cuts did not create the long lasting growth we republican have been stacking our lives on!!!

Hell yes,
I'm so glad this has been made mention. The consertive base, including Sarah, Rush, Phil Gram, eric cantor, Boehner must have egg on there faces.
The cat is out of the bag.
Now I’m sure that these guys are going to add their comments to this article in about 30 seconds to try and save their consertive assed. But too late, to the story is out.  Now they know how Nixon felt when those dumb assess could not even break in and bug that Watergate hotel with out getting caught.

LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!!!!
6 trillion dollars, wow, that makes president Obama spending look like buying penny candy!!!

Cicero (sent tues 9:57am) You say healthcare will increase the deficit? Well then why not do what Bush did for 8 yrs.; 'Just give big tax cuts to the wealtiest amoung us, "if that doesn't increase the deficit i have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you."
It appears that Larry Summers would be living in the liberal fantasy world with 17% actual unemployment numbers.  Good thing that Obama received the Nobel prize for make-believe and not economics.
Trying to remember the last time the job market was this bad. Hmmmm, Carter? Trying to remember what got the jobs back. Hmmmm Reagan? Tax cuts?
Republicans do not like history unless they can rewrite it. Reminding them of how we got here doesn't help them look at other options. The last election was a clear look at how they would have governed. They would have just continued all as it has been. They never understood or accepted that the world has changed, the nation has changed, and fundamental economic realities have changed. Yes, we will suffer more comming out of a near death of our economic system. Actually, it surprises me that Republican's are crying for more stimulus - even if it is through the back door of less taxes. Whatever happened to their cry for letting the markets work? Their proposals have nothing to do with the realities of history or ralities of the present but are only old political toys for them.
Finally, someone has the guts to stand up to the blowhard Republicans.

So Boehner wants another tax cut for the rich? Are these people even capable of learning from their mistakes or from the history of the eight years prior to Obama? The spending binge by the Republicans every time they get into office since Reagan is the primary reason we find ourselves in the shape we are in economically.

I'm surprised Boehner isn't recommending what Hoover did when the last Great Depression came in 1929.
TAX BREAKS! For all those on unemployment? Not paying any taxes? In this recession people will only hoard it or pay off and close a credit card (with all their higher fees!)
Drip, drip, drip. Why don't we just put recording devices in the chairs on one side of the Senate and House and just let them play 'Tax breaks, tax breaks' all day. Be a lot cheaper than actually having to elect these people... or provide them with great HEALTH INSURANCE.
Did 8 years of Bushconomics not teach us anything. My goodness, Obama has been in office for 9 months. Lets at least give him the 4 years of his term to see how the economic turnaround effort plays out. The Republikans are to blame squarely for the Wall St. meltdown. They were in power 8 years while it was in the making, what of the millions of jobs lost from 2000 - 2008, no mention of that here??? No GOP finger pointing or excuses. Pleeeze

Dear Mr. Summers:

I'm a strong left wing Democrat liberal.  My husband is an independent (he switched from REP) in 2006, first time ever.  However, please listen very closely.

He was laid off with millions of others in March 09. He has attended and joined 5 networking groups for the unemployed.  He sits at his computer more than 65 hours a week seeking a job.  Over 95 percent of those he has meet at these networking groups are in late 40's to 60 years of age.  Why?  Because they were the top dollar earners in their work.  So to safe money employers wacked them and are NOW replacing these folks with 20 year olds earning 1/3 the wage, if at all.  We have safed the help want-ad via the net from Ford Motor Company were my husband lost his job.

My husband and many hundreds of others have band a ring around the auto industry from here to CA.  Including tier 1,2,3, suppliers of people laid off that were older white collar workers from the auto industry.  When you have been in the industry over 25 years you get to know a lot of people.  The group now hedges with about 4456 players who are determined if they don't see white collar jobs come back for them (ie..people over 50 in auto industry or tier suppliers)they will bring a sea of red to your door, literally in 2010. They will make it their job to get republicans back in.  My husband voted for Obama, and now wishes that he did not. Why? My husband states "NO JOBS FOR OVER 50".

2010 will be equal to 2006, but much more damage. Where are the good jobs? Where are the white collar jobs that pay?  Why aren't employers hiring 50+ year olds for jobs?  Why are NO more jobs being posted on job sites? THERE ARE NO JOBS! The Tax Credit should be for older workers.

How many other industries is this catching onto with people coming out of the wood work to vote in 2010.  We now know of 2 other industries that are starting up groups to, for older workers.....their votes will count believe me.

Leaving Obama a duck with no passage skills of any type, nature or substance till his term ends.  With a very sad ending of a do nothing guy, because he ignored the jobs!!!!!!!!!

Respectfuly,
Ms. Chloe
