Skelton on Afghanistan

from NBC's Luke Russert and Ali Weinberg
House Armed Services Committee Ike Skelton (D-MO) reaffirmed his support for General Stanley McChrystal's recommendation for a 40,000 troop increase in Afghanistan today, as President Obama meets today for a fifth time with his military advisers on devising a new strategy.

Speaking at a hearing on Afghanistan, Skelton said, "General McChrystal's recent assessment presents a sober, serious view of the situation in Afghanistan and the challenges we face," Skelton said. "He also presents one possible way forward, a fully resourced, population-centric counter-insurgency campaign that would protect the population, build the Afghan security forces, and work to improve the government. As my colleagues know, I am a strong supporter of this approach."

Skelton's support for McChrystal's plan puts him at odds with his counterpart, Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI), who favors a focus on strengthening Afghan troops by sending in 2,000 to 3,000 American trainers. Skelton acknowledged suggestions by Levin and others that go against the McChrystal plan.

"Others disagree however," Skelton said. "We can find sober and serious people who advise that we risk getting bogged down in an unwinnable war and that focusing on capturing and killing al Qaeda leadership is the right approach. Others suggest that our primary mission should be to train and equip more Afghan security forces and that we should not add U.S. troops to the 68,000 already there or on the way."

Skelton referenced the approval in key House and Senate committees, including his own, that any new Afghanistan plan will need: "I believe [President Obama] feels the same sense of urgency we all feel, and I hope we can all support his desire to make sure we get Afghanistan right. Congress, however, will also ultimately be involved in this decision," Skelton said.

What is rising faster- the death toll in the Afghan and Iraq wars or US unemployment figures?
At least the death toll in the Afghan War is not as high as the homicide rate in the City of Chicago. Those Dems are really tough on crime.

Obama has been in charge with a Dem majority Congress for 10 months and the unemployment and foreclosure numbers are getting WORSE, the Afghan and Iraq Wars are getting WORSE, lawless pirates rule the West African coasts, Mexican drug lords are infiltrating the US southwest, Commie Chavez and Commie Castro still rule with an iron fist, Iran is working on a-bombs and intermediate range missiles, Gitmo still open, HCR still a fiasco, Fannie and Freddie may need another bailout, GE Capital Commercial Real Estate may collapse along with the rest of the commercial real estate market, CIT teetering on bankruptcy, AIG not out of the woods, new car sales Aug 09 to Sept 09 down 42%, Sept overall unemployment 17%!

Shall I keep listing Barrys proud accomplishments? Even the ultimate Obama lackey- NBC, ripped Obama on SNL about doing nothing. This guy is a cardboard cutout. Nothing more.

Time for another vacation hey Barack?
The posts about how to pay for Health Reform really ticks me off..These same self righteous people never asked once how to pay for Iraq or Afghanistan...

Jessica, NC

Jessica, a question. What are you liberals going to do when the money runs out?
Obie's war is getting messy. Stock market is way up today, lots of investments in body bags are making a killing. That and funeral homes and casket makers stocks are way up.
At this point, Afghanistan is not winnable, period, and sending more Americans would be irresponsible.  Had Dubyass not started a war with Iraq, I believe we had a chance in Afghanistan, no more!!

It's time to bring our troops home; it's just one more in a long string of disastrous foreign policy decisions by the last administration that we need to face; we can not and will not win!! It's far too late; the Taliban was allowed to regroup and regain its' strength because we did not have sufficient troops in Afghanistan once Dubyass pulled them and sent them to Iraq!! Time to come home!! I hope President Obama makes the right decision; it's over; there is no winning!!
Will some one tell this dummy what BTW stands for.
Obama is taking a lot of time trying to figure out how he can talk himself out of the corner he painted himself into. Just blame Bush O.B., then unconditionally surrender and pull the troops out. The only media outlet that will question you on it would be Fox, and Fox is evil, so who really cares.
They're lying to you, folks.  The correct number is FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/07/world/europe/07diplo.html

Forty thousand more troops is just a first step.  Two to three thousand is just a joke.

Maybe we'll all think more of Canadian health insurance when we have to send all of our sons and daughters there to escape the draft.
Obama is taking months to figure out what to do. Just how long does it take to surrender?
Skelton is right on. Massive military build up isn't going to work in that region. Ask the Russians.

A multi-pronged approach is what is needed. The social, political and local military and police must be the ones to take on what is happening in THEIR country.
Obama practices for hours on being CIC by playing both Risk and Battleship.
Hillary would weigh in with her great experience and expertise in these matters, but she's busy going to fancy dinners and trying her darnest to look relevant and important.
Let us voter's decide because if some thought the Health Care Bill needed to be on-line try this Because I did not support the Iraq invasion which some called a war and it was not no  bin laden was there and all that fire power and troop were not needed after we got suddam we just stayed for what reason we don't know beause  i'm sure we could have used that money over here.no more free weaspon contracts and no more iran contra affairs like gun and weapons for drugs.
FR: President Obama meets today for a fifth time with his military advisers on devising a new strategy.

Obama got confused and gave the advisers tax credits for their health care. Obie also wants to know where he can go to get some of those fancy and shiny medals the advisers are wearing.

On second thought, let's not go to Afghanistan. It is a silly place.

This dispute will just have to go to a conference committee between the House and Senate, and when they are done, Afghanistan will have a Public Option.
The way things stand with the Democrats and Obama, Iceland could invade the US, and they'd probably win.
"MSNBC Hardball's Chris Matthews takes a look at who made GQ's list of the 50 Most Powerful People in Washington.

Ben Bernanke is “No.3 on [GQ’s] list of the 50 most powerful people in D.C. who aren’t named Obama or Biden.” He comes in just after White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and Defense Secretary Robert Gates. But he’s ahead of Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council Director Larry Summers, who are tied for No. 7. (It’s only a couple of years since Bernanke was No. 23 on the GQ list, three spots behind Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.)”

That is what it is all about for Barack Obama. Being popular. An empty suit looks much better when it is a $1,500 handmade Brooks Brothers suit with a shiny Nobel Prize pinned to the lapel!
When are you liberals going to sign up to fight the war in Afghanistan? All last year during the election you kept telling the world that "Afghanistan is the war to must be fought!". Alright, so sign up Rambo! Go grab a piece of dirt over there and defend it!!
I agree with bobf that Obama is a yellow bellied coward.
Skelly,,,must have been asleep during the Vietnam war, since he fails to see how this war is no different then that war.We had a failed plan then and for the last 8 years we had a failed plan,or no plan at all.my guess is that Skelly is owned by Big Bullet, and when Big bullet speaks guys like Skelly snap to it.Besides the war is not in Afghanistan, the war is now in Pakistan, Al Qaeda has moved on,so the fight in Afghanistan would be a waste of lives and dollars,we need to move to a swifter force, quick strike forces, and a major bombing campaign. But sending more troops, onto a Mountain side pass where they have the edge is not a wise move.
Has Obama captured or killed any prime targets in the al Qaeda leadership like Bush did all the time? Or is he just going to apologize to them and leave it at that?
Global Warming == Devastating Hurricanes

At least loony boy AlGore says so.

So far no hurricanes, just a couple little rain storms.

How about those sanctions on Iran!!

I think if we just talk to Taliban, then they'll come around. Maybe say we might put a sanction on them, that will get their attention. Maybe a gun collection social program will work?

For the LOVE of God... will you please STOP?

You're fretting over Obama's time off... where was your phony OUTRAGE when 'W' spent over 1000 days away from office?

That be 1/3 of his Presidency!!! Not that it mattered because even when he WAS in office - he was 'out to lunch'!

Give it a REST!

HCR will be on the President’s desk and signed by Christmas.  That will be a wonderful Christmas gift for the uninsured and underinsured.

Ron, since it won't kick in for several years, don't think it'll be much of a gift.
We need an advocacy group to tell us what to do!!
We HAVE to be careful about Afghanistan
I think adding more troops will help

BUT......

There's a 'fairy tale' going around:

'the 'Surge' turned around the Iraq occupation
Increasing American troops turned around our occupation of Iraq

IT DID NO SUCH THING

What turned around the Iraq Occupation was the 'Sunni Awakening'
When the Sunnis stopped co-operating with al-Queda the war turned around
It wasn't Field Marshall Bush or Generallissimo Cheney who did anything
Our commanders started cooperating with Sunnis and stopped treating them as enemies

Iraq also had a 'quasi-Legitimate' government
Afghanistan may not had one
We'll see

There's no magic solution
Stay the course and HOPE for the best

The voters did decide. Obama went on and on about how Afghanistan was the "Right war to fight", and got elected doing so. Okay, so go fight it Obama.

Yes, the unproductive of our society just do not have enough handouts already!
Wow, sure are a lot of military geniuses posting here (and a whole bunch of 'anti-anything Obama' children, I might add, get a clue children, your insults only make you look as stupid as your insults sound).

McChrystal's report included language that he wanted to be very clear that he did not just want 40,000 troops sent in without a carefully thought out strategy.  He has indicated that he supports President Obama taking the time to ensure this is done before making a decision and sending troops.  He has also indicated that it should not just be 40,000 combat troops.  McChrystal's boss (you know, the Secratary of Defense, or for you children posting on here, the military 'Czar') also happens to agree that this process of getting the strategy right before making any committments is the right way to go.

And, for God's sake, will everyone please learn the difference between 'then' and 'than'?  Also, it is 'a lot' not 'alot'.

BTW, by this time during Bush's first term, he had taken 96 day's of vacation, including the entire month of August, and just under 1000 days during his entire presidency.  I sure wish I could take 3 months vacation for every year I work.  So all of you idiots complaining about President Obama's time off, either STFU or start complaining about Bush not paying the US back for his vacation travel expenses.
MFSierra,

The Sunni awakening did help, but the surge in troops allowed for better defense along with crushing offense.  The extra troops help give the trainers time to train.  The extra troops allowed the new gov officials the time and safety to gather meet and settle differences.  The extra troops did not necessarily win the war but it did allow the Iraqis the time and relative calm to establish their defenses on their own basis.  The extra troops would do the same in Afghanistan.  Right now troop numbers are limited to either run productive offense OR defense and training.  The extra troops would allow for both to be done productively and at the same time.
Also, what are they possibly going to say at the 5th meeting that they havn't said before.
