Another setback on Iran

from NBC's Andrea Mitchell
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin today expressed skepticism about sanctioning Iran over its nuclear program. Putin made his comments in Beijing, in what will be widely viewed as a diplomatic rebuke to the U.S. and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Clinton just wrapped up a two day trip to Russia and is now flying back to DC.

"There is no need to frighten the Iranians," Putin told reporters in Beijing after a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organizatin, the AP writes. "And if now, before making any steps [towards holding talks] we start announcing some sanctions, then we won't be creating favorable conditions for them to end positively. This is why it is premature to talk about this now," he said.

Clinton had her own difficulties over Iran on the trip, as Russia's hardline Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov restated his opposition to sanctions yesterday. Later yesterday, she met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who did not publically disagree with his Foreign Minister.

Privately, according to State Department officials traveling with the Secretary, Medvedev repeated assurances that he'd given President Obama at the UN: that sanctions would be unavoidable if Iran did not disclose its nuclear program.

Following up on commitments made in Geneva two weeks ago, Iran is supposed to meet next week in Vienna with International Atomic Energy Agency experts to discuss turning over its declared low-grade enriched uranium to Russia for reprocessing--eliminating that  part of the stockpile from any potential future weapons fuel use.

Iran has also commited to invite IAEA inspectors into its Qom facility by October 24th, and to meet again with Western diplomats before the end of the month.

Iran is one of Russia's closest trading partners
WHY should they cut off trade to preserve Israel's nuclear monopoly in the Middle East

I remember in the 70's, under Breszhev (?)
The Russians were talking about a preemptive strike against China BEFORE they go the bomb

Thy're barbarians ! they'll use nukes recklessly !! They endanger the world !!
The SKY IS FALLING

Sorry, we survived Chinese Nukes
We survived Israeli nukes
We survived South African nukes
We'll survive Iranian nukes

Obama is taking his time deciding onn our course in Afghanistan
He's trying to correct the ENORMOUS SCREW UP BY BUSH
Bush had 7 years to 'win' in Afghanistan.... HE BLEW IT !!

Bush had 7 years to capture bin Laden .... HE BLEW IT
Hrvkuva job George !!
Mission Accomplished ???

WHAT A SURPRISE !!!
The Republicans don't like our Economic fix ?

Weren't they in charge for 6 of the last 87 years ?
Didn't THEY RUN UP DEFICITS for 6 of the last 8 years ?

Didn't THEY enable Bush to DOUBLE THE NATIONAL DEBT ??
Not deficit, the NATIONAL DEBT !!

Didn't they CUT TAXES on the RICH while running two wars and a new Social Security Drug Benefit ??

I wonder how the republicans will get us out of the Bush Recession ?
(Hint: Tax cuts for the RICH)

Just to be fair

Somebody award Geroge Bush the Nobel Prize for STUPIDITY

He Earned it !!

Maybe Cheney could get the Nobel Prize for EVIL !!
Well, at least it's a distraction from the humiliating spanking we just took on HCR.
I thought President Obama was leading these guys around by the nose?  Are we ready to accept that they want and will get the bomb unless military action is used?

"There's no need to frighten the Iranians," said Putin, "so don't send Hillary's big butt in that pantsuit over there!"
You mean Russia and the rest of ther world isn't in love with Obie?  Say it isn't so!
Gee, wasn't it just weeks ago Obama told us all about the great successes he was having with Iran? How Russia had agreed to sanctions and how Iran had agreed to ship out their uranium for processing and had also agreed to inspections. All those great things? Just like Obama though, those things are just more empty promises.
Iran hasn't talked about wiping Israel off the map for a few days. That can be considered to be progress.
This is bad news for America. So the republicans should love it.
Obama wants to know if the surrender papers he's having drawn up for Afghanistan can be generalized and be used to surrender to Iran too. Doing so will make for a nice cost savings.
Dmitry Medvedev in a recent CNN interview stated that he is charge not Vladimir Putin.
Now maybe he [Medvedev] knows his place. He is just Putin’s puppet … a place holder since Putin couldn’t run again.
First Read writes: "Clinton had her own difficulties over Iran on the trip, as Russia's hardline Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov restated his opposition to sanctions."

Sergei is obviously a racist.
Can someone who is knowledgeable on the subject tell me, if Iran gets a nuclear bomb, wouldn't Russia be at greater risk than the U.S. Not just from missles, but from a Cherynobel type accident? I remember when the Russian plant melted down, Europe was impacted by the radiation. Wouldn't the Russians have more to lose than the US if Iran cranks up the production of this poison?
Maybe Hillary should bake the Russians some cookies. I hear they consider that a sign of friendship.
That's it ... I KNEW we should have elected McCain and Palin.  The whole problem is that Clinton wears pantsuits.  Putin would have been too busy trying to look up Palin's skirt to care about anyone else's  nukes ... (oh, never mind).  Next time we'll know better.

Well, if you can't trust a Russian, then who can you trust?
HCR will be on the President’s desk and signed by Christmas.  That will be a wonderful Christmas gift for the uninsured and underinsured.

Ron, since it won't kick in for several years, don't think it'll be much of a gift.
Christmas 2013, Maybe

It will be quite the Christmas present for the taxpayers through because the taxes kick in before the ink used for Obama's signature is dry.

Doesn't look like Little Johnny is getting that train set he wanted this coming Christmas.
MSNBC and FirstRead, after your deplorable treatment of Hillary Clinton during the primaries, how you can imply something Putin said is her fault doesn't surprise me!! But GTF over yourselves!! SOS Clinton has done more in nine months than Condi Rice did in four years!! She was an utter failure as National Security Advisor, and like everyone else who was a failure in Dubyass's administration, she was rewarded with a promotion to SOS!!

Get off Hillary Clinton's back!! She's doing an excellent job!!
Methinks Obama HAS NO IDEA what he is doing.
Actually I will call you stupid because PRESIDENT OBAMA said this will not happen overnight - could go on for a year. Anyone that has studied economics knows that jobs are the last to recover.

No, Obie said 600,000 jobs THIS SUMMER. THIS YEAR.  Summer is gone.  SO, not only is he STUPID.  He's A LIAR.
I think the important thing to keep in mind is that Russian diplomacy is rather Byzantine. They don't want to embarass Iran publicly by saying they are for strong sanctions. They are putting up a front, so the Iranis can save face. Anything having to do with Russian diplomacy is done through back channels.

Besides, leaders of Russia do not make announcements on major policy shifts with the U.S. Secretary of State. They would make them with the President.
typical fist read/msnbc, post the comments you like.

Claudia,

Were you born a stupid, childish brat or did that take a few years to develop?
Isn't everyone under a general basic agreement that Russia helped Iran get the technology they needed to build the nuclear facilities they have now?  How is it a good idea to use them to enrich Iran's materials?  How long are we going to let these people talk us and stall us into an undefensible position?  Everyone talks about Isreal having nukes, but I defy anyone to name one time that Isreal has even threatened to use them.  This man that we continue to "talk" with has threatened that very thing and he doesn't even have them yet.  What are we going to do when they get one and this man has "real power" and not just his imagination?
Unleash Isreal.  Let them do what they want to do and then back them up.  It will take a week at most if it is done right and decisively.

It is the whole middle east that would be at risk.  The theory is that if Iran goes nuclear Saudi Arabia will buy a bomb from Pakistan and that Syria and Egypt would also go down the nuclear road.  This is ignoring the fact that Ahmadinejad is a holocaust denier and refutes Israels right to exist.  Yes we are safe but the region where we import most of our energy from maybe a little more unstable.

--I think a direct attack on a country or its allies would be worse, Russia probably won't be Iran's, Hezbollah's or Hamas' first target.

I think the trick it to explain to the Russians the benefits of sanctions.  Short term, will Iran really revolt against Russia and China, I mean, it needs there support more?  Long term, it will prevent a MidEast arms war, probably invasion of Iran and higher oil prices (although, I kind of wondered if Russia wouldn't benefit from high oil prices).  The Obama team has to explain why we are also looking out for Russia's best interests.

--On a side note, Russia seems to be testing Barack Obama with this.  Will Obama sit on the sidelines (not making a choice) like in healthcare, or will he stand up to Russia.  Compromise is good, but sometimes a good President has to stand his or her ground.  I think this is an opportunity for Pres. Obama.

NOT GETTING IT DONE

Come on, Obie. If you listen to your commanders in the field and not your rad pack of lib wing-nuts, you might be able to accomplish SOMETHING anyway.

You are losing in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. You lost the Olympic bid because they all knew you thought you were entitled and saw that possibility of a great Olympic party to end your tenure ... to fulfill the egomaniac that is Obama.

The economy continues to crumble. Gitmo is still open.
You've spent the country into hell and you are full of excuses. Cry all of us a river, Obama.

Did you ever consider that you don't have the staff or the guts to get the job done?

Too many apologies only show your weak side, which covers all four sides of you. You yap, yap, yap and it's only more crap.

You give Fox News more and more ammo and you wonder why they criticize the "Chosen One." You make yourself an easy target, forgetting that you put your pants on the same way we all do. You don't own Fox like you own the rest of the media cowards.

Get used to the critics. They won't stop. Ever!

But i thought Russia would do whatever Obama wanted since he removed those missle shields from eastern Europe.

So much for diplomacy, guess Bush was right!!
Many liberals said something like, "Nice to know that President Obama's diplomacy has won over the Russians to assisting the Iranian problem. It was for this support that he removed/delayed the missile shield."

Obama is not the international miracle worker so many of you claim. He has failed to address North Korea. He has failed to address Iran. He has failed our fledgling eastern European allies. In every international situation he has one of 3 roles he has played--the bowing and boot-licking toadie, the hollow suit with hollow words celebrity, or the fool with the "kick me" sign on his back.

I do not agree with the president in his policies, but I know he is not stupid. I also recognize that he has many advisers around him able to council on international matters. Why, then, does his diplomacy come off a monkey playing to the music looking to get the audience to applause for him? He has achieved no substance, merely the hollow sound of clapping.

Even I would say he is capable of more than this. But this is all we've seen.

P.S. I am not even going to touch the olympics issue, because who cares either way?

We went through this with India, Pakistan, China, and of course we never objected about England, France, and Israel. There is nothing the bullies can really do for the long term or short term except to accept another bully into the gang.
Russia is right.
No surprise here.  There was never a diplomatic coup in the first place.  That Obama was dissed by the Iranians, the Russians and probably the Chinese was a foregone conclusion and there's really nothing to be ashamed of.  It's been the lot of all recent presidents when it comes to Iran, regardless of approach.

The real problem is how many people actually thought this president had gotten anywhere in the first place, especially when the Russians signaled this "setback" within a day of the original "success".

So where does this place the slobbering pavlovian syncophants that attributed almost godlike status to Obama's "abilities" in dealing with Iran?
Gee, this is the equivalent of telling the U.S. NOT to do business with China.  I can see we have a lot of leverage here with Russia.
Obie is a non-noble Nobel loooooooooooooooooooser. And his empty suit has been taken to the cleaners by Chavez, Putin, Amhadwhatever, and Kim Il. Our Nation is going to be hit badly while this egomaniacal pretty boy primps and struts.
Wait....What in hell happened?? Did not Obie and the Demoncraps gather round ,hold hands, and sing Kumbaya to Putin..Did not The One, bathed in heavenly light, hold out an open hand to Putin's clenched fist and plead"Cant we all just get along Comrad" Why did Putin say"Nyet, Nyet Barryovitch." I am Verplucnt. Did we not apologize enough after abandoning our allies to please you Putin. Come follow HIM to the sweat lodge where you can be cleansed and see the error of your ways
They say one thing in public something else in private. Russia will do what Russia needs to do to ensure a rogue state doesn't get out of hand with nukes. There is much for Russia to lose like everyone else. Real diplomacy isn't easy like shoot from the hip knee jerk diplomacy. Many deals and agreements are made that we never hear about.

Since Iran is a good customer for Russian nuclear technology it must be hard for them to sanction their customer like that. Sanctions may not be necessary if Iran does what they say and open their facilities to international inspectors. You can bet that Iran's every move is being watched, not just by the US but by Russia and every nation in the region around Iran.
