*** The optics problem: The Obama White House is in one of the periods many presidencies go through, when no matter what you do, it doesn't seem to play well. Fundraising is one of those issues right now. As we noted yesterday, the president is spending an inordinate amount of time this week campaigning and raising money. It's just two weeks before some crucial elections, so it's only natural he'd be spending time on the money/campaign circuit. But with so many policy balls in the air (health care, jobs and Afghanistan), none of it looks good. And last week, he went from touring New Orleans' Katrina areas to a glitzy San Francisco fundraiser. What’s more, the president today is raising money in the media's backyard -- New York City -- and he's drawing even more attention to the issue, especially since some Wall Street types are attending today’s dual fundraisers for Bill Owens (the Democrat running in NY-23) and for the DNC.

*** When the C.W. is wrong: Of course, there's another practical political problem that has gone under the radar: The Democratic Party is NOT raising money like it did two and four years ago, and the president -- because of the lobbyist restrictions he's put on fundraising for his appearances -- is not the big draw presidents usually are. Here’s the unintended consequence: The president has had to do MORE fundraisers than his predecessors and is still seeing his party get outraised in a number of places. This is a classic case of the C.W. having this one wrong: Barack Obama isn't the fundraising juggernaut as president he was as a candidate. Remember, he's not raising money for himself, and he's putting a lot of restrictions in place whenever his image is used as a draw. By the way, not only are Democrats struggling on the fundraising front, but one of their best sources of fundraising support is Wall Street. And as the New York Times points out today, Wall Street is no longer giving the party the cash it used to 1) because of the government’s bailout and 2) because it hasn’t been too happy about the reform measures moving through Congress.

*** Karzai; Gates vs. Rahm? Turning to Afghanistan, today’s news is that Karzai has conceded “that he fell short of a first-round victory in the nation’s disputed presidential election, and agreed to hold a run-off election with his top challenger on Nov. 7.” Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Gates seemed to offer a subtle contradiction to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel on the issue of whether a decision on troops and a new strategy could be made while the country was still in election turmoil. "We're not just going to sit on our hands, waiting for the outcome of this election and for the emergence of a government in Kabul," he said, per the AP. More: "The outcome of the elections and the problems with the elections have complicated the situation for us. But the reality is, it's not going to be complicated one day and simple the next," he said. "We're going to have to work with this going forward, and I believe the president will have to make his decisions in the context of that evolutionary process."

*** A game-changer? Wow, did the Washington Post pump up a very minor uptick when it comes to the public option. Last month in the Post/ABC poll, 55% supported the idea (in the way they worded it); this month, that number is 57%. But today’s headline (“Public option gains support”) is all public option advocates will need. Will the poll be a turning point in the Senate/White House merger negotiations as they wrestle with whether to include some form of a public option in the bill that's offered on the floor? To be fair, this is the fourth time when majorities in the Post/ABC poll have favored the public option. Perhaps that is what the paper was trying to point out...

*** Obama vs. the Chamber: A day after environmental activists staged a hoax -- pretending that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce was reversing course to support the climate-change legislation moving through Congress -- the Washington Post takes a look at the rift between the Chamber and the Obama White House, especially after the Chamber’s opposition to the health-care legislation and climate bills. “Instead of working through the Chamber, President Obama has reached out to business executives, meeting repeatedly with small groups of CEOs in his private White House dining room. He also has dispatched top aides Valerie Jarrett and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to corporate boardrooms… Meanwhile, the Chamber is fighting back with its own public relations agenda, launching multimillion-dollar ad campaigns to resist several of Obama's top priorities.”

*** The GOP’s gender gap: As part of the NBC/MSNBC focus this week on women in the workplace and society, First Read takes a look today at the Republican Party’s struggles with female voters and whether the upcoming gubernatorial election in Virginia will be an improvement for the GOP. In last year’s presidential election, Obama won female voters by 13 percentage points (56%-43%), while he won the male vote by just one point (49%-48%). This year’s Virginia race, which the Republican Bob McDonnell is leading, has emphasized women’s issues. Democrat Creigh Deeds seized on a graduate thesis McDonnell wrote when he was 34 years old, in which the Republican, among other things, said that feminism and working women were “detrimental” to the American family. McDonnell has responded by pointing to his working daughters, including one who had served in Iraq. The Deeds campaign has hoped that the thesis story would hurt McDonnell among Virginia females, who make up about 54% of the state’s electorate. So far, though, the gambit hasn’t worked…

*** 2009 watch: Speaking of that Virginia race, it’s now exactly two weeks until Election Day 2009… Bill Clinton stumps for both Creigh Deeds (at 12:30 pm ET in Northern Virginia) and Jon Corzine (at 8:00 pm ET at Rutgers University)… Deeds and McDonnell square off tonight in Salem, VA for their final debate… The New York Times drops a potential bombshell on Chris Christie, alleging that the U.S. attorney colleague whom Christie had loaned $46,000 helped the Republican candidate in his bid for governor. For instance: "In March, when Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s campaign requested public records about Mr. Christie’s tenure as prosecutor, Ms. Brown interceded to oversee the responses to the inquiries, taking over for the staff member who normally oversaw Freedom of Information Act requests.” … This story comes as a new Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll finds Corzine and Christie tied among likely voters at 39% each; independent Chris Daggett is at 14%.

"FR: In his weekly Saturday address, President Obama focused on health care and went after insurance companies and cable news.

How weak is this? Obama is nothing but a rank amateur community organizer. The man is President of the United States, and he's acting like some punk in the projects. He's firing on a cable news organization? How thin-skinned is that? Maybe you have some sub-ordinates or political operatives hacks take that message public, but the POTUS is making the claim? Weak. Really weak. "
-Lynn Wheatly
-----------------------------------------------
Um, Lynn. . . Fox News has the right to their own opinions, but NOT their own facts.

There is no constitutional right to LIE, even if the  "media" feels that is their right.

I notice in your comment, you conveniently gloss over all the lies that have been told by Fox News . . . why is the President required to sit back and let these folks take to the airwaves and lie?

Nashville_fan
-----------------

What lies would those be? The lie that said ACORN is corrupt? The lie that Van Jones was a communist? The lie where Obama Communications Directory Anita Dunn's favorite political philosopher is Mao? The lie where Obama promised 3 million new jobs, but has lost 3 million jobs instead? The lie that reported Obama was closing Gitmo in a year, but now isn't? The lie that reported Obama would televise his health care reform negotiations, but didn't? The lie that was reported that Obama would not sign legislation with earmarks, but then he did? So what lies are you talking about?
Massive furloughs of government workers in Chicago,  Pennsylvania cutting jobs by the boat load, including 500 at the State EPA offices, Hawaii cuts 17 days off of the school year because they are broke. Yup, ObamaNomics is working real well.
News!! What News?

In no way am I faulting FR as it is their job to objectively report news, not create news; but to be honest, it’s hard to get excited about the DOJ guidelines for smoking pot, 3 year college degrees, today’s working women, Obama targeting the Chamber of  Commerce, Wall Street, or healthcare insurance companies.

I haven’t heard a new thought or idea coming from the healthcare world in weeks.  Actually I’m glad to have a few days, or a week with minor stories.  It’s good to have a respite.  If a kid is safe hiding in the attic and not riding in a rudderless balloon, that may qualify as a good day.

So let’s rehash some old news. Republicans are having a feeding frenzy, eating their own like sharks is old news. Watching them move further and further right…so no one will vote for their candidates is old news.  Now only 20% of the general population identify themselves as Republicans is new news. That’s down 8 percentage points from 3 months ago. But I predicted months ago that the GOP could split into conservatives, ultra conservatives, and libertarians.  So since that was predicted months ago, I guess that’s really old news.

The only news that isn’t news is that Fox News is a political arm of the Republican Party.  Should our President spotlight Fox news for being guilty of simply pushing the conservative agenda?  Might as well, you cannot reason with them…and Fox News continues to pride themselves for being outrageous and vituperative.
The bait-and-switch techniques of the Liberals are clearly shown with Obama. Last year, during the election, Obama was marketed as a "Hope and Change" President. Lofty goals where stated, but never questioned for more details, well, except for Fox News, but they aren't a real news organization. Obama said he'd "Reform health care!", but no one, other then Fox News, asked how he would accomplish such a task. Obama said "Afghanistan is the war to fight, and I'll listen to my Generals as to what they need to fight that war." Obama promptly ignored his own hired General needs to fight the war. Obama was sold as this uniter, yet he's divided everything he's touched, including his own party. Bait-and-switch. The Democrats will pay next year for having brought Obama to the head of their party.
Either a public option or very highly regulated insurance industry that will prevent the rapid rise in insurance premiums they are continually inflicting on us. With out one or the other, or both of these, the HRC will be useless.
eagle1776

-----------------

Liberals just cannot buy a clue. The insurance industry is heavily regulated! There are only 3-5, if that, insurers that can compete in each state. That was a regulation the federal government put on the insurance companies, a gift them for their lobbying efforts no doubt. And Obama and the Democrats are not changing that regulation in any of their current set of bills in the House and Senate. The Public Option isn't anything more then a hostile takeover by the federal government of the health care industry. And to have one means that everyone will get the same crappy and expensive care as everyone else.
FR: Fundraising is one of those issues right now. As we noted yesterday, the president is spending an inordinate amount of time this week campaigning and raising money.

---------------------

Obama certainly can't campaign on the Democrat accomplishments for the year, there are none. Maybe he can work the ballon boy from Denver into his speeches. Spice them up a little.
Obama loves to campaign, it's what he does best. It's pretty much all he can do.
Five stars for Lynn Wheatly!!! Nashville, you just got your banjo smashed; now go back to hunting rabbits.
MSNBC heaven forbid you PUMP UP your own numbers from polls espically when the info shows a decline for the President or health care reform espically when you change the wording of your poll from one month to another.  Heaven forbid!!!!  After all surely you are the only correct pollester in the world!!! give me a break!!!
So Obama and Emanuel think the government in Afghanistan will be legitimate, but they think Fox News is not legitimate? Fox will probably be the only media outlet covering Afghanistan. The rest will focus on the kid in the ballon and how many jobs Obama has "saved" with his wonderfule "Stimulus" plan.
*** The optics problem: The Obama White House is in one of the periods many presidencies go through, when no matter what you do, it doesn't seem to play well.
______________

Lol lol lol… of course the MSM hands aren’t  a bit ‘dirty’ NOW are they?

The daily evisceration by the so called press of this President is not only growing old…  people are starting to pay attention to what’s going on!

I have elderly relatives (not all of them are Democrats) who can’t BELIEVE the constant stream of negativity that’s directed at President Obama!  Trust me… their as disgusted as I am!

Ps; The fact that half the time these ‘pundits’ can’t even call him President… Mr. Obama or simply Obama is what passes for RESPECT these days.  And you know who you are!
The Washington Post and ABC are not legitimate news organizations.
McDonnell says working women are detrimental, yet points to his daughters.  Just another example of "do as I say, not as I do"!  Doesn't Dr. Laura run this same scam?
Lynn Wheatly-Were you under a rock for eight years when tax money went to Halliburtin Darth Vador's
company, when the Shrub joked about looking for WMD'S under the sofa, mission accomplished, not adding 2 wars as well as Medicare part D to the budget, Paulson's whopping 8 page tarp money given to his former company Goldman Sach, The Shrub saying in 2004 campaign stop in Buffalo that " A WARRENT IS NEEDED FOR A WIRETAP" etc !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.I can go on mano a mano w/ you. STOP WATCHING FOX NOISE.
Everything about Obama is a complete fraud.
Even his HOPE picture is a copyright infringing ripoff!
Just a question for the first read team
How do you guys feel about the white house going after one news source?
Do you see this as being put on the spot cause if you side with the white house you will be seen as giving up your independent status, but if you go against the white house you will be black balled..
HMMMM

*** Obama vs. the Chamber: A day after environmental activists staged a hoax -- pretending that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce was reversing course to support the climate-change legislation moving through Congress -- the Washington Post takes a look at the rift between the Chamber and the Obama White House

++++++++++++++

You'd think the Washington Post would take a look at 'environmental activist' organization that faked the memo. But I guess that would be something called 'news', so we'll have to depend on Fox News to cover it for us.
FR: The optics problem:
-----------------------------------

The real optics problem is that Chuck Todd et. al. need new glasses. They're always seeing "problems" for President Obama that only they and Fox can discern.

Speaking of Fox "News," the pundits who are attacking the Obama administration for saying Fox is not a real news network don't seem bright enough to have noticed that no other "news" network has promoted and organized hate rallies against a sitting President of the United States, with Confederate flags and witch doctor posters and all.

Of course, maybe it's difficult for the "mainstream" media to tell the difference between real news organizations and fake ones because the outfits like CNN are barely real news networks themselves.

We now return you to the latest on breaking news on Balloon Boy.
Obama is holding a $15,000 a plate fundraiser for the Democrats. A few big DNC donors will be missing from the dinner:

Bernie Madoff
Marc Rich
and now Raj Rajaratnam

Raj Rajaratnam Big Democratic Booster Arrested
ABC News Oct. 16, 2009
The Democrats have lost another source of political funding. It turns out arrested hedge fund manager Raj Rajaratnam -- charged in a $20 million insider trading case -- has given big to the party in power.
Here are his largest cumulative contributions this decade, according to data from OpenSecrets:
• $26,700 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
• $26,200 to the Democratic National Committee Services Corp.
• $11,100 to Hillary Clinton
• $10,000 to the New Jersey Democratic State Committee
• $4,600 to Barack Obama
• $2,000 to Charles Schumer
A Sri Lankan native, Rajaratnam gave more than $3.5 million to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), whose assets were frozen by the U.S. Treasury Department in Nov. 2007 because of its alleged ties to the Tamil Tigers. ABC also notes that Ranjithan's home was raided by the FBI in 2006 because of his ties to TRO.
MSM also find ways that raise questions of President Obama's legitimacy in subtle ways.

"Is he tough enough"

"This or That is a major test for Obama"

"Why is President Obama doing too much"

"Why is President Obama doing too little"

"What is the cost of an Air Force One trip"

"What did President Obama and the First Lady order in the restuarant"

Get used to it folks - President Obama was ELECTED President with a significant majority.  No amount of giving a bigger platform to the minority will change that fact.  It's going to be a LOOOOONG 8 years.  So pace yourselves.

BTW...anyone see the report on 2 right wingnuts almost fighting about who supports Wasilla Queen more?
So what lies are you talking about?
Lynn Wheatly (Sent Tuesday, October 20, 2009 9:24 AM)

Lynn, i would not be talking too much about lies until you go back and take a look at the massive lie regarding weapons of mass destruction and the $2 trillion dollars and countless lives lost.  fox news helped pedal that trash.  so yes, lies they do provide.  waiting for them to re-air their cheney special regarding his "courage".  you are a dope.
Repub Sen. Kyle said he doesn't believe people are dying because they don't have insurance, "unbelievable the arrogance of these repubs"-- leave them give up their excellent insurance they have, payed by us taxpayers,& see how they like living without Health Insurance!!;; See if they die Early without healthcare.

Another weak attempt from the Left Wingers to cover up Obama's messes. Conservatives drink the water that says if the government is going to create jobs, then it better not spend $800 billion dollars on do nothing state governments to save those jobs while ignoring the private sector jobs, you know, that ones that pays the freight for the free-loaders of the country. Conservatives drink the water that says government run health care will make the nations health care service poor, expensive, and rationed. Conservatives drink the water that says if Obama thinks there is $500 billion in waste and fraud in Medicare, then clean that up first and then come back to talk to us about taking over the health care system. Conservatives drink the water that says we must get control of the terrorists in Afghanistan while Obama dithers his way along trying to figure out how to surrender.

And it's better to drink the water then the Obama kool-aide.
"Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Gates seemed to offer a subtle contradiction to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel on the issue of whether a decision on troops and a new strategy could be made while the country was still in election turmoil."

Has Obie been to all 57 states yet?
Obama Communications Director Anita Dunn give out any more quotes from her favorite philosopher today, you know, Chairman Mao?
There are two fundamental facts for the Obama administration and the Democrats: 1) If people get a federal check, they will vote for the people that gave it to them, and 2) There are two political parties in the US -- those that pay taxes, and those who get paid because of those taxes. And so it goes with Obama, where the majority in the country are the people that don't pay taxes, and they vote themselves a raise from the minority of people that do pay taxes.
The Obama Stimulus money is just temporary, but the payment for it will be forever. And no jobs were created.

How about leaping into the present?  What does any of that have to do with the lies of THIS administration that every other network refuses to report on?  I realize they're busy with fact checking SNL skits and all, but Fox News' ratings are through the roof.  You would think that even one other network would catch on to a successful business model: report all of the news and quit acting as water carrier.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inordinate amount of time campiagning? Don't recall you saying these things when Bush/Rove CREATED to "continual campaign" or whatever it was called.
The problem with the MSM is that they are paid like Elites, so therefore they ALWAYS give credence to the Republican sound bites, no matter how ridiculous they are. Like this, Czars, etc - THEY are the ones benefitting from the ONE TRILLION DOLLAR Tax Cuts given by Bush, and THEY are the ones who benefit from the "Pee On Me Economics", so of course they always distort Obama's message, and criticize him over nonsense.
This is why Obama's Whitehouse is taking on Fox Noise - the other media outlets follow right behind and lend credibility to their craziness. MSNBC is included in that, just listen for 3 hours every M-F morning with Morning Joke and Bobblehead Mika.
Bill2009 (Sent Tuesday, October 20, 2009 9:27 AM)
Bait & Switch you say? Nonsense. President Obama has been listening to his generals and also taking the time to figure out properly what the next step should be in the Afghan war and in Iraq. In simplified terms, if one chef is making pizza for 8 yrs (and badly I might add) when the next chef takes over it's difficult to change terrible pizza into filet mignon after 10 months.
The electorate spoke loud and clearly last November when we threw out Chef-Boy-R-Dee and hired Pres. Obama. He, as he stated in his campaign speeches, will be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in. That's not bait 'n switch. Thats using sound judgement.
Just a question for the first read team
The White House is using Fox to distract the public from Obama's total failure on the economy, health care reform, cap&trade, and Afghanistan. If the WH people were not talking about Fox, they'd have to have answers to all of their failures.
Lynn Wheatly: What lies would those be? The lie that said ACORN is corrupt? The lie that Van Jones was a communist? The lie where Obama Communications Directory Anita Dunn's favorite political philosopher is Mao?
--------------------------------------------------
Van Jones was never a member of the Communist Party; he only said that when he was a college kid angry about racism.
The Acorn people caught were a handful of low-level employees. That hardly makes the entire organization corrupt, especially when compared to Cheney-connected military contractors like KBR whose shoddy work electrocuted a dozen soldiers in Iraq. But I guess you didn't hear about KBR on Fox, because Fox only supports sending troops to war; they don't care what happens to them when the get to the front.
As for Anita Dunn, she was joking. She said her other favorite philosopher was Mother Theresa. Did that part of her comment get onto Fox or did they doctor the video to make it sound she was saying something she wasn't saying, like they've repeatedly done to President Obama? Video doctoring is another Fox specialty that the real news media, as bad as it is, does not engage in.
Bush's million-dollar-a-plate fundraiser dinners were no problem, but Obama caring enough to visit New Orleans on his way to an event is poor "optics"? I thought only Fox was an arm of the GOP...
Liberals can't talk about the present with Obama's and the Democrats successes, because there are none. So they must talk about . . . , the past. Let them swing away, they have a lot of anger to work off because Obama sold them a bill of goods that he can't come through on.
Really?  Well, when one announces a new recipe he's going to try in March, why is it now October and he hasn't cooked anything yet?
If the public option is the great hope to hold down health care why is the congress ignoring their own rules for medicare and attempting to pass a price increase for providors that will result in a 250B increase in the deficeit?  This is why HCR as currently proposed is a sham? (even if it contained a public option)
Obama's dithering and procrastinating in Afghanistan is costing American lives. Obama hired General McCrystal to to tell him what it would take to win in Afghanistan. McCrystal has told Obama, and now Obama dithers away the time with phony meetings, at least when he's not out campaigning.
My boss supports the Chamber here in FL.  My boss is a Republican.
On fundraising--  The Democratic Party has never raised the type of funds the Republican Party has over the years, because let's face it, a lot of us are working stiffs that only send $5.00 or $10.00 to the DNC once in awhile.  I really don't care where the Press is on this, because the "Corporate" Mainstream Media never watches when Republicans fundraise.....as they are PART of that fundraising mechanism.  So, let's get a grip, and say, a mostly popular President has been asked to help fundraise, and he is.
It wouldn't matter what Pres Obama does, the media and his critics would do their best to create a controversy to surround it.  Optics?  This President has worked harder to solve our massive problems than many other presidents yet the focus is always on the trivial.
It may mean democrats are not raising as much money but getting lobbyists out of the equation for his appearances has benefits.  There are some legitimate lobbyists but for the most part, they represent big corporate interests.  $1.4 million is spent per day by insurance lobbyists to fight health care reform.  Think of how many people could buy coverage with that kind of money.
Whether or not the Afghan election is resolved will not interfere with the President's decision, it just changes the dynamics of the decision.  Both Gates and Rahm are right.  Gates is right because waiting for the election results may be months from now; Rahm is right because Obama must consider that a corrupt Karzai may still be in charge.
The Chamber of Commerce has created a big image problem recently by opposing HCR and cap & trade.  They have lost quite a few businesses because of their stand on these issues.  Another image issue, the Chamber has been claiming about 3 million members for years and it turns out that it is about 300,000.  Not sure how a group could be 2.7 million off in their membership estimate.
Just gotta laugh at the usual attack on ACORN.  FOX may not be news but it is good at demonizing any group that threatens to erode the right's power base.  ACORN has problems but so do Lockheed-Martin, Northrup-Grumman, and Boeing who have paid billions in settlements for defrauding the Government.  ACORN's problems are minor in comparison but I don't hear the GOPers whining about defunding big business.
Yes, the GOP has a gender gap and it has to do with their attitudes toward women.  It is one of the reasons I switched parties.  If I were a voter in Virginia, the thesis written would make me question McDonnell's real views of women; doesn't matter what his daughters are doing because he can't control their thinking.  Yes, as we get older our views may change but some things stay with us.
Majority rules in a democracy and 57% is more than half. It looks like a majority of people actually want the public option. So, Congress, get it done. eagle1776 (Sent Tuesday, October 20, 2009 9:58 AM)
And it's better to drink the water then the Obama kool-aide.
"THAN" the Obama kool-aide, Markie.  THAN.
And, I stand by my post.
Hell, we even have a person that can't come up with anything better than (THAN) the '57 states' goof.
>> *SCHIP was expanded
Unfunded mandate paid for with deficit spending.
>> *Does medical marijuana ring a bell to you?
Looks like you've self prescriped for years.
>> *Does the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ring a bell?
Does 3 million jobs lost since it passed ring a bell?
>> * Does the "Making Home Affordable" home refinancing plan.
Which has done nothing but make another housing bubble that will burst once the funding ends. Also, it was just more deficit spending by Obama - to the tune of $1.4 trillion and counting. Someone is going to have to pay for that.
>> * The President launched a $15 billion plan to boost lending to small businesses.
And small businesses continue to fail at record rates.
>> * * President Obama played a lead role in G-20 Summit that produced a $1.1 trillion deal to combat the global financial crisis.
Obama was laughed out of the room and turned down for any suggesting he made.
>> *Does the Nobel Peace Prize ring a bell?
What's next, the Cy Young? He did have a heck of a pitch at the All-Star game you know.
To all of the right wing whack jobs:
You people must be so tired of living in constant fear. I am so sick of your constant "no" to anything outside of your comfort zone.
NO one is advocating for "free" public option HC. We are all willing to pay our fair share. We just want more than one option to choose from. All I have right now is one choice and it sucks. I would prefer to spend my premium dollars with a plan that is "not for profit". Open up Medicare to all and charge the appropriate premiums to make it self sustaining. No new program. Let's use the one we already have.
Welcome back Mark Murray. You were missed!
The Democratic Party has never raised the type of funds the Republican Party has over the years, because let's face it, a lot of us are working stiffs that only send $5.00 or $10.00 to the DNC once in awhile
Barbara, spare us.  The Hollywood crowd and the trial lawyers are hardly 'working stiffs' and they're two of the biggest groups of Dem supporters.
