Hoyer fired up on Afghanistan

From NBC's Luke Russert
In his weekly off-camera pen-and-pad session on Capitol Hill, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer expressed anger and frustration with Republican attacks that President Obama’s lack of a clear, concise policy regarding the war in Afghanistan is putting American troops at risk, “My Republicans colleagues, of course, abandoned their focus on Afghanistan for seven years and let it drift and did not resource it properly and did not succeed.”

Hoyer continued, “For the Republicans who essentially diverted the attention from defeating terrorism, to Iraq on the incorrect assertion that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, frankly don’t move me mightily, as you can tell.”

When pressed again on whether or not troops in Afghanistan can be safest if the commander-in-chief hasn’t outlined a comprehensive understandable strategy, Hoyer again shifted blame to Republicans and what Democrats widely consider their past history of failure in Iraq. “Let me reiterate: We were under-resourced in Iraq for at least five and half years. McCain said so. I said so. Hagel said so. Where were they? They were in charge. Where were they? They under resourced very badly Iraq.”

Hoyer then claimed that Democrats have so far tackled the Afghanistan issue better than the Bush administration, “However, we have more people in Afghanistan today than we did under George Bush. And we are taking the fight more vigorously to the Taliban and to Al-Qaeda. In Pakistan on the border and in Helmand Province in where the fights are toughest.”

He added, “[General] McChrystal has now made recommendations as to in light of the facts of Afghanistan in what we need. But we have more people than Mr. Boehner and his party put in Afghanistan in the last five and half years.”

Hoyer concluded by defending Obama’s delay in making a decision about Afghanistan strategy, “He correctly believes this is a critically important decision for him to make and he wants to make it correctly ... when he decides the right policy that be can successful he will resource it properly.”

Since "Too Big To Fail" banks won't release money to the general public after the general public took them Off Life Support, President Obama should release TARP funds to smaller banks as a way of helping small businesses. I'll admit this should've happened sooner, but i'll also admit that this was the Intended Target to begin with. However the Big Boys took the $$ & Ran.

I'm a Fan of NashvilleFan, who never disappoint's with her Intelligence & WIT, something the Republican's flooding this board are Incapable of.

Maybe Freedom Works is paying these Fools now that their TeaBag protest did'nt go over so well!

O well ,Armey's Army never was that Intelligent anyways!

Feisty, i'm a thinking Lynn may be into that kinda thing, since she is always so spiteful in her Post.

You know the saying " It takes All kinds" !

Preach on Rush, Sean, Beck & savage, Preach on Brother's !
They all talk a good game when they are controlling the conversation. Frankly he doesn't move anyone either.
There's simply no way to "win" the Afghanistan war, if by "win"  we mean 100% elimination of all Taliban, 100% elimination of all Al Qaeda, 100% prevention of anyone wanting to re-create Taliban and/or Al Qaeda, and the complete democratization and industrial development of what is in effect, a 14th century country with 70% illiteracy.

My friends, we should say, we won, because we toppled Taliban and reduced Al Qaeda's numbers there to the 100s...or else, we all should pony up a some real money, i.e., a War Tax, and prepare to spend most of our economy there!  I don't want that.

Time to call it Mission Accomplished in Afghanistan, and get the heck outa there!
And here lies the difference between war mongers and thinking folks.War mongers have a motive, either they are in the pockets of big Bullet, big tanks or Big war contractors, like hallaburton,Blackwater, cica, titain, krb, you know the Dead eyes no bid buddys.Or you have the other side who remember Nam,which this war has all the same problems,we don't really know who the bad guys are,the people of the country hate us,and our views, they want us pout now,but the war monger crowd would like to stay for ever,as long as the kids of the war mongers don't have to pick up a gun.Bohner and the rst of his chickenhawk party can shove it where the sun wouldn't want to shine,on the ass of the country's wimps..
Come on, Hoyer and you pansy-ass leftists.  You are big boys, right?  Enough of he said/she said/not our fault/we were mislead/it's somebody else's fault/we don't know/not our problem and on and on into infinity.  You bastards were elected (or selected) and have been in a position of power for nearly 10 months, and all you can do is whine, finger point, and flail.  Obviously you are visionless, gutless, and useless.  Take a hike, Stennie, you pathetic little boy and return to life when you grow a set of testicles.
It's so nice that Mr. Hoyer is "Fired up, and not ready to go" with regards with Afghanistan. Even when the Presidents own Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, is now saying that "The United States cannot wait for problems surrounding the legitimacy of the Afghan government to be resolved before making a decision on troops". That is the stark reality of the situation, and Hoyer wants to continue to play games with American lives.

Mr. Hoyer, Democrats campaigned last year on having clear and concise direction in Afghanistan. To date, that promise, as well as most others, has not been fulfilled. So rather then blame Republicans, Fox News, or who ever else you find to complain about, how about for once coming up with some real solutions.
OK. We get it.  Everything that is wrong in this country is BUSH's FAULT.  WE GET IT.

Now - - what are you going to do about it, Obie???  Besides whine and point fingers and blame.  It's getting old.  You're not a child.  You knew things were screwed up when you campaigned and you still wanted the job.  Now you've got the job  - - do what you promised!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Republicans colleagues, of course, abandoned their focus on Afghanistan for seven years and let it drift and did not resource it properly and did not succeed.”
What this artical tell me is that once again, the bad decisions by former president George Bush, is now bitting president Obama in the ass.
Just like the economey, banks bailouts, deficets, Kartina, tax cuts, Iraq, Gitmo,no health care, rising umemployment, and now the republican are complaining, that the president is not doing enough, or not doing what they want.
where the hell were they for the last 8 years. i know they were hiding in the same bunker that former president Bush was in on 911.
so whats next!!!!!!!!!
Hoyer. What a hack. Steny, you wanted the job, you got it. If you don't want to do the job, then stand down and let a real man do it.
We have one Commander in Chief at a time.

Get used to it folks.

If you don't like the current one, you have got another 7 years, 3 months to stew about it, so get your head right.

From previous post:

To Richard, Washington State: First of all, the entire Mao issue is ridiculous and beneath you.

Second of all, if you think quoting someone is more of a commitment than reading about them, then I have already wasted too much time with this reply.

Lastly, how about this:
McCain quotes Mao
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYJ15vbo15w

Gingrich quotes Mao
"[F] former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, also a Fox News contributor, quoted Mao in a 1995 Roll Call profile.

"War is politics with blood; politics is war without blood," Gingrich said, citing Mao.

On to the next nontroversy . . . this one is lame.

Won't need a waiver Janet. Both programs are going broke. Waste, corruption, lack of innovation, are all killing these government entitlements. Anyone under 50 should not expect those programs to be available when they retire, they both will have gone bankrupt by then. All that money each person paid in during their working life, 15% for SS (you pay half, your employer the other half) and 2% or so for Medicare, will be all gone. Poof!

Paul Miller (Sent Tuesday, October 20, 2009 11:38 AM)
================================================
Ummmmmmmmmmmm well I have seen waste, corruption and lack of innovation from big business too. Always thought that was the "American Way".

I would like to address the 15 million that have lost their jobs - did you lose your health care too? How do you feel about a public option? I thought you would.

Elise, SF

Ah, but Elise, if you don't like what the private businesses are doing, you can not patronize them, not buy their products, their stock, or their bonds. In other words, you have a choice.

What choice do you have with Social Security and Medicare?

Oh, Congressman Hoyer, don't annoy the GOP with facts!

I've tried many times to argue here that Afghanistan is "Obama's War" because Bush didn't want to fight it.  The argument falls on deaf ears.
If Obama and Hoyer fought the terrorists as hard as they have fought Republicans and Fox News, the world be a much safer place. All the problems, threats, and wars in the world, and Obama/Hoyer pick Fox News to be the most dangerous of them all.
We need a leader, instead we get spin.
Apparently no one told Steny that the Republicans are the minority in his House by about 80 votes, and yet they beat ol'Steny like a rented mule.
TO ALL OF YOU REPUBLICANS THAT OPPOSE EVERYTHING THAT COMES FROM THIS PRESIDENT, DO ANY OF YOU AT ALL ACTUALLY THINK THAT BY OBSTRUCTING PEOPLE AND DOING NOTHING BUT SAYING NAY TO EVERYTHING IS A GOOD COMEBACK THEORY FO YOU ALL!!  WHY DONT ALL THE REPUBLICANS GET TOGETHER AND MAYBE ONE OF THEM COULD COME UP WITH A GOOD SOLID IDEA ON SOMETHING, BUT WAIT A SECOND THEY CANT BECAUSE THEY ARE THE PARTY OF NO-WHICH RELATES TO NO NEW IDEAS FROM THEIR FEEBLE MINDS!
Greg Remington

Don't you remember Greg? Obama told us "I won!". That gave him The Right to solve all the worlds problems. We're still waiting though for him to come up with even one idea to solve even one problem. Perhaps Hoyer can help him?
Republicans talk about our President taking his time to make an important decision in Afghanistan, yet ignore the fact that 124 Americans die every day due to lack of healthcare.  What hypocrites!!

I suspect that our President is moving away from the notion of nation-building to destroying Al Qaeda.  I suspect our President has some clearly defined goals and will use a strategy that will accomplish those goals.

Boehner and Cantor have shown no leadership or presented no new ideas. They see gain in being oppositional.  That is exactly why only 20% of Americans claim to be Republican. BTW, the ABC Washington Post poll is a respectable polling source.

Some polls are better than others. It might serve readers well to learn what constitutes as sound poll.
The Blame Bush thing. Wearing a little thin. Check that, wearing a lot thin.
Hoyer continued, “For the Republicans who essentially diverted the attention from defeating terrorism, to Iraq on the incorrect assertion that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, frankly don’t move me mightily, as you can tell.”

------------------------------------------

Didn't you know, Congressman Hoyer?

We invaded Iraq because of their link to the members of al Qaeda who attacked us on 9/11!

Or was it the Weapons of Mass Destruction?

Or was it Saddam Hussein's refusal to cooperate with UN Weapons Inspectors?

Or was it to liberate the Iraqi people and bring democracy to the Middle East?
Hoyer, good Lord. The country is being led by complete idiots.
I'd like to know if there is a trick to getting a comment posted on this site.  I have been posting at FR off and on for several months, and never have seen one of my posts here.  Why?
Just because they blame the mess on "the previous administration" does not change the fact that Obie’s lack of a clear, concise policy regarding the war in Afghanistan is putting American troops at risk.

He *IS* putting our troops at risk.

When will he learn how to make a decision.
Hoyer continued, “For the Republicans who essentially diverted the attention from defeating terrorism, to Iraq on the incorrect assertion that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, frankly don’t move me mightily, as you can tell.”

-----------

Hoyer of course voted "Yea" on the vote asking for the House of Representatives position on attacking Iraq for the very same reasons he outlined above.
He is correct. Bush-Cheney and the republicans dropped the ball for 7 years in Afghanistan. What is the hurry now that we have a African American President. Bush tried to top his dad by going to Iraq, we all know that. I think our country went backward for 8 years now we are trying to play catch-up. We should have stayed the course and caught bin-laden for killing our citizens. Instead we were in Iraq overthrowing the government and getting our military kelled.
Obama continues to make excuses for not coming to a decision on Afghanistan. Today it's the election fraud that happened in Afghanistan, tomorrow it will be "Date Night" for him and Michelle, next week he'll have to go on Letterman or something. I guess he has his priorities.
It's about time for a solid push back.
Funny Hoyer didn't just blame Fox News. Seems to be the popular thing to do for the Democrats.

New ABC/Washington Post poll:

Only 20% identified themselves as Republicans -- the lowest number since the paper starting asking the question in 1983.

19% trust Republicans in Congress to make the right decisions for the country's future.

34% trust Democrats in Congress to make the right decisions for the country's future.

49% trust Obama to make the right decisions for the country's future.

And the poll is invalid because …. In 5,  4,  …….

The press tried to reach Obama for a comment on Hoyers outburst, but Barack was not available as he was out campaigning.
Are there any liberals left around here? At least one or two that make any sense.
Hoyer better chill, 'lest he be apologizing to defacto GOP leader, Rush Limbaugh.
Here, Here. Well said. I am beginning to enjoy this new found energy by the democratic Party. You tell em' Mr Hoyer...Refresh the of No's memory.

Answer me this righties?

With all your hypothetical ‘predictions’ that the Democrats will suffer a ‘blood bath’ in 2010.

Can just one of you EXPLAIN how that’s going to HAPPEN when only 20% of voters will embarrass themselves and actually ADMIT they’re Republicans?  That’s the lowest number since 1983…

You all got some serious WORK to do (other than chanting NO) if you have any hope of gaining some traction!

Pick up a MOP and get to work...

So much for your 1993-94 theory… lol lol lol lol
Let's figure out where we're going, before we drive the car

The last time we just took off, George Bush ran us into a DITCH
Then, he said: 'Mission Accomplished'

President Obama is a lot more thoughtful than that
I hope he'll finish the job, after getting Karzai to agree to a run off

If the President had agreed to more troops before today, Karzai might not have agreed to a run off

Sometimes patience pays off

Keep on Mr. President

Don't listen to the yapping of Field Marshal Boner or Generalissimo McConJob or even Special Forces Commando Michael Steale

Q: Why did the Chicken cross the road ?

A: To join the Texas Air National Guard
Quick, fox-holes!  say something about Mao. Steny is making too much sense!  Didn't a lefty on the boards ask this same question earlier?  Understaffed for the last 6 years and NOW the complaints come rolling in.

We'll have a new set of talking points tomorrow after the lemmings get their marching orders from beck and hannity tonight.

Noticed how the tort screamers let up after the CBO said that the reforms would only save 41 billion over 10 years??  Drop in the bucket.

Mao! Socialist! Teleprompter!!
Hoyer continued, “For the Republicans who essentially diverted the attention from defeating terrorism, to Iraq on the incorrect assertion that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, frankly don’t move me mightily, as you can tell.”

Snap!  It's that pesky 'selective memory syndrome' that the righties can't seem to shake!

Remember... they are the 'do as I say not as I do' party!  lol lol lol

The hypocrisy 'hits' just keep on rolling...
I agree with the man. I'll tell you a little bit like I told the VFW. Where were you brave fellows when guys were being shipped out with defective or non-exsistant equipment? Where were you when were you when disabled Vets were being made to chose between disablity pay and retirement pay so Dick and the boys could free up some off the books money? Where were you fellows when they went thru 30 Generals until they finnally found a few to tell them what they wanted to hear? Judging by what I hear from you they should have called one of you. You want to "win" don't you? Then why don't you give it a rest until they can define the mission so that we will know if we won anything at all or just pissed away a lot of fine young men and women on somebodies wet dream. It's awful easy to set around and be brave when there isn"t someone around the corner getting ready to shoot at you
Here's an even Bigger decision

'...the public option will fail unless the White House weighs in more forcefully...'

From Washington Monthly:

'...LOOKING FOR WHITE HOUSE INSTRUCTIONS....
Sam Stein reports this afternoon that many insiders on Capitol Hill believe the public option will fail unless the White House weighs in more forcefully. It's consistent with everything I've been hearing lately, but I remain skeptical.

Democratic aides said that a "handful" of senators who are skeptical of a public plan likely could be persuaded if not to support it then at least to oppose a Republican filibuster, if the administration were to apply a bit more pressure -- or even guidance.

"There is a clear sense that it would be helpful," said one senior Democratic aide. "Throughout this entire debate the White House line has been 'We will weigh in when it is necessary'.... Well now we need 60 votes. So if it's not necessary now, then when will it be?"

"I think folks in general in Congress were looking to the president to clearly define his feeling on the issue," another aide said. "And I don't think he has done that on the public option from the get-go... With a lot of senators nervous because of elections or other political dynamics, it would be helpful for the president to send a strong signal that this is what he wants in the final bill."

The frequency with which this comes up suggests it's a widespread sentiment among pro-reform Democrats, both on the Hill and off. That said, I'm not at all sure it's right.

At this point, there really shouldn't be any lingering doubts surrounding President Obama's support for a public option -- he's endorsed, promoted, and defended the idea repeatedly for months. The president talked up the idea, for example, in his joint-session speech. He's also expressed his support for the idea in weekly addresses, media interviews, town-hall events, and speeches. Behind the scenes, away from the cameras, there's additional evidence that Obama has personally reached out to skeptical lawmakers to urge them to support the public option.

The president has not issued a veto threat -- in other words, he hasn't said, "No public option, no signature" -- but he hasn't left much doubt about what he wants, either. My sense is the White House has laid out its priorities, and now expects legislators to legislate.

Indeed, wavering lawmakers are now well aware of some key truths: 1) the White House wants a public option; 2) the majority of Americans want a public option; and 3) the vast majority of congressional Democrats want a public option. It's now up to Obama to "weigh in" and tell these dithering members, who are unmoved by these obvious and important details, exactly what to do?

I wish it were that easy, but let's not forget, the president doesn't exactly have a lot of leverage over center-right Democrats from solidly "red" states. It's not like Obama can promise to campaign for Sen. Mary Landrieu in Louisiana next year -- the president is extremely unpopular there.

It'd be great if Obama, through sheer force of will, could pick up the phone and tell Nelson, Landrieu, Lieberman, Lincoln, and Conrad "how it's going to be." I'd be thrilled if Congress would pass a reform bill with a public option, simply because the president asked for one. But there seems to be quite a bit more to it than that...'

Time to SPEAK UP, President Obama
Please STAND UP for the Public Option
Please BE STRONG
Steny, what about bin Laden? Barack won't tell us where he is, will you?
Go get em Steny!!!  Bout time
You can't blame Mr. Hoyer for being so testy. He has to work for Nancy you know.
Rep. Hoyer - you have the best military the world has ever seen at your disposal, and you're babbling something about "under-resourced"?
Bev Chicago is on a bell ringing binge today.  Well, Bev, your post definitely rang a bell with me.  It reminded me that you are a ding-a-ling.

But peal on.  Clang.  Clang.  Clang.
Steny...while I get your point, and mostly agree with you, it could have been said in a less wordy and more logical way.
If we hadn't been playing Wheres Waldo for 8 years in Iraq maybe we would ahve made progress in the real war on terror in afghanistan and pakistan...too bad we went astray looking for make believe WMD's in Iraq...

Still waiting for the mushroom clouds from saddams nucklear arsenal...waiting...waiting...forever
Everything about Obama is a complete fraud.
Even his HOPE picture is a copyright infringing ripoff!
General  McChrystal the coward who lied about the Pat Tillman incident needs to give our CIC a crisp salute and sit his ass down somewhere and wait for his orders, if he's still going to be there then.

Republican leaders and their shrills are the ones advocating Afghanistan, IMO,  which  puts our American troops at risk, This is still George Bush who dropped the ball since 9/11 because Cheney wanted profit from the Iraqi war.

I appreciate a President who things in terms of life instead of money and hope he will not give to demands of those who want him to fail on every front.

As I've said before Alexander the great, Genghis Khan, the Russians have not been able to conquer and change the culture. I believe Richard Engel, a war correspondent was talking about how the villages are similar to biblical times.

Republicans want real hell and fire and brimstone because the "Dopes Of Nope" are real devils.
