Poll: Fewer believe in global warming

Posted: Thursday, October 22, 2009 3:59 PM by firstread

From NBC's Ali Weinberg
Even as major climate change legislation moves through Congress, fewer voters believe global warming is a very serious problem -- or even think there is solid evidence of it -- a new Pew Research survey finds. And action on the environment has slipped even further down voters' lists of policy priorities for the president, although a majority would not oppose regulations limiting carbon emissions.

According to the poll, 35% of respondents said global warming was a serious problem, down from 44% in April 2008. Even starker is the increase in voters' skepticism: Only 57% said they believe there is solid evidence that earth's average temperature has increased over the past few decades, compared with 71% who said that last year -- a 14-point drop. Also, just 36% said increases in global temperatures are the result of human activity, which was down from 47% last year.

Along political lines, global warming was the lowest-rated priority for both independents and Republicans, and was 16th among Democrats out of 20 issues.

Still, despite voters' ambivalence about climate change, 50% said they would support a policy setting limits on carbon emissions, versus 39% who say they would oppose it.

Thank you, Al Gore, for presenting easily-discredited facts simply because they supported your argument in "An Inconvenient Truth".  By cherry-picking data in a manner that never would have passed peer review, you managed to do your cause far more harm than any industry lobbying group could ever do.

The Nobel Committee discredited themselves when they gave the prize to Gore.  Giving the Peace Prize to Obama was simply the latest blotch on their record.
From earlier...

you begin to wonder what the real plan is.

GoreBull Warming is as real as Obama's birth certificate and HOPE picture.

Gore won the Nobel Prize for his years of atmospheric physics and climatology reasearch, areas where we all know he is a world-renowned PhD. Just like Obama is a constitutional law professor from the University of Chicago.
People can "believe" in the Easter bunny, too. Believing or disbelieving doesn't impact on the truth. Our planet is warming. The proof is the disappearance of glaciers that existed for thousands of years. We have pictures, people.

As for why the planet is warming, until someone comes up with solid evidence to otherwise explain the cause and effect, we know that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere -- which we do when we burn fossil fuels -- produces warming. It's not the only factor, but the main one. These are facts. People can believe them or not, but it doesn't change their truth.

Global warming's impacts will be varied, as with all environmental changes. We'll like some and dislike others. Some will cost us and some will accrue to our benefit. Our gains will be someone else's losses and vice versa. But sea level rise from melting glacier, particularly in Greenland and Antarctica will be everyone's problem soon or later. That's also a fact. The only question is when and how much.
What wonders a mis-information campaign will do! Thank you again Republican law makers and Bush Administration. You truly are the gift that keeps on giving.

I realize that any controls on emissions effects American business, but you know what? I'm TIRED OF HEARING about what affects American business. Huge bonuses affect American business too.

Are they BLIND?! Let me suggest the following:

Any questions?
Another fanatasy of the Left flys away.
I wonder how much of this is due to the rebranding of the issue: Politicians almost exclusively refer to it as "climate change" rather than "global warming" now. The poll questions seem specific to warming.
Even the Polar Bears are freezing their hinnies off.
Poor AlGore. First the internet, now this.
Well, those people are believing those that have an addiction to oil and coal.  We are running out of time to start doing things to keep our planet healthy.  Those that don't believe this is a problem don't understand the science behind it.  We are already seeing the weird weather predicted.  Those that don't believe -- where are you getting your science?
We all know that the ace around the poles are melting.  Ocean temperatures seem to be warming.  Is there any evidence that land temperatures are warming? I live on the west coast and it seems every winter it get's colder.
Once again, ample evidence that many, many Americans are ill-informed and lazy about affiars of the world and significant evidence that the right wing spin machine does influence otherwise sensible people.
What they do or don't believe doesn't really matter. I suppose they will keep on not believing in global warming when Kentucky is part of the Atlantic Ocean's coastline, too.
Great. Just great. On this news, now Al Gore is going to be unemployed. Just when is this recession going to end?
Fewer believe it because we had a cold, snowy winter and a cool summer.  People do not understand what global warming has nothing to do with a cool summer or a warm winter.

Boehner has no credibility, just criticism.  Guess he thinks the American people have short memories; of course, his far right base will buy every word he says.  The GOP has been engaging in Chicago-style politics for decades.  I applaud Pres Obama for reminding Americans and the main stream media that FOX doesn't do journalism.  It was crazy that the MSM would take FOX's bait of a phony story and turn in into one.

What would Boehner call Cheney's recent mud slinging?  Listened to Robert Gibb's comment that the former administration left a troop request sit for 8 months and did nothing; Pres Obama took care of it in March.  Someone should tell Cheney to sit down and shut up--he and Bush paid NO attention to Afghan for 7 years, they left it for Pres Obama.  At least one republican, Lamar Alexander, is using his brain and  disagreed with Cheney adding that Obama is right to be deliberative and get it right.  So when I read comments here about why democrats keep blaming Bush & Cheney, I can't imagine why any reasonable, intelligent person would think they aren't responsible for nearly destroying this country economically and starting two wars they couldn't be bothered to finish.  Bush & Cheney, the worse administration in our history.  I'll keep blaming them until pigs fly.
why would you agree with regulations if you werent concerned about global warming..i think these numbers are the only thing cooking round here.
What do you expect?  People in America are some of the most "out of touch" folks on the planet. Some here in the San Joaquin Valley and across the nation think the drought here is "man made"! This kind of ignorance is running rampant through this society, and there does come a time time that this ignorance becomes stupidity! We will get exactly what we deserve until people "educate" themselves and stop listening to the lies big industry and the politicians who are owned by the industry are telling them. I'm not holding my breath. I think Americans by in large are'nt very smart.
This is why we are a representative democracy rather than a direct democracy...to prevent the tyranny of the clueless. Sometimes leaders have to do the right thing regardless of the ignorant masses (see: civil rights legislation).
The Human race is killing itself.  This is the first stage of death - denial.  Next comes anger - which describes me.  I'd be bargaining; but I don't know who to bargain with - next comes depression and finally after the nuclear food wars begin - acceptance.
Lets confuse the public again and threatren them with the bad effects of Global Cooling! If nothing else, I can make a living off it for another few years.
And when the Earth started to cool in 2008 I had accomplished all my goals, so I retired.
As an engineer and one that is not politically motivated either way, I confess the arguments for global warming are still nebulous. It pains me to be against considerable scientific opinion on this matter. That said, there are many benefits to going forward with a program to reduce the US carbon footprint on other grounds. There is nothing gained by splurging our natural resources and escalating our dependency on foreign sources. Therefore, prudent increases in gas mileage requirements, more investment in clean technologies, and, by all means, resurgence in the use of nuclear power have positive impacts beyond global warming. Don’t let the environmentalists appeal drown out message leading to the other worthwhile aspects.
This is so sad.  The oil and coal industries have done such a good job in lieing to us that people are starting to believe it.

Listen people-

Big Macs are not good for you
Toilet paper doesn't need to be 4 ply
A crispy cream doughnut is not a breakfast
You don't have every disease that the pharma industry wishes you  had.
You don't need a new computer every 6 months.
And Exxon doesn't care about the envrionment.

You don't have to believe what corporate america wants you to believe.

Excuse me, the lies that the "big industry" give. Let's see, the hottest year for global temperatures was in 1998 but still you guys claim the earth is warming. All over the world people are experiencing extremely cold temperatures and still you say we have to control climate temperatures. Even in the northeast, where I have family members, they just went through a summer without a summer. Oh, and I love this fact . . . there's no scientific evidence that CO2 actually heats anything! So until someone produces real evidence of CO2 warming the earth, no computer models allowed, don't believe one iota of the environmental claims that there is global warming.
