Congress: Public option's new life?

"The Senate has long been seen as opposed to the federal government selling health insurance in competition with private industry, but now senior Senate Democrats and White House officials are strongly considering including such a measure in health care overhaul legislation, officials say," the AP says. "The provision would permit individual states to drop out of the system, a design that could make it more palatable to moderates who have opposed the "public option."

But is the public option in trouble in the House? Politico: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi counted votes Thursday night and determined she could not pass a ‘robust public option’ — the most aggressive of the three forms of a public option House Democrats have been considering as part of a national overhaul of health care. Pelosi's decision—coupled with a significant turn of events yesterday during a private White House meeting—points to an increasingly likely compromise for a trigger option for a government plan.”

"Rep. Paul Hodes (N.H.), who is in his second House term, and freshman Rep. Mike Quigley (Ill.) called on the House Oversight and Government Reform panel to initiate an investigation into Countrywide Financial’s 'Friends of Angelo' VIP program and whether it was used to gain influence over federal officials. They made their case for the investigation in a letter to Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), the panel’s chairman, and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the ranking member."

HEALTHCARE REFORM: THE ART OF COMPROMISE MEETS THE MARTIAL ARTS

If there was ever a case that screamed “Corruption!”, it’s the Countrywide Loan scandal. As the Wall Street Journal reports:
Democratic staff for the House oversight committee informed their GOP counterparts today that the majority has changed the locks on the committee’s hearing room. While Republicans previously enjoyed their own key to the room, they will now have to request access from Democrats. This followed a bitter partisan argument in which Republicans refused to take down a video from their website that contradicted Dem explanations about a closed-door meeting on the Countrywide VIP loan scandal.
Background: The Democrats said they had to cancel the hearing because “too many members were in another committee hearing.” In reality, the corrupt cowards were hiding in another room and the Republican video exposes the truth as they attempt to sneak out a back door.
For some reason – and we certainly wouldn’t want to cast any aspersions, but encourage you to feel free to do so – the Democrats are very afraid of this Countrywide scandal and the subpoenas Republicans want to issue. They’ve done everything they can think of to put the kibosh on those subpoenas, but California Republican Congressman Darrell Issa has his teeth in this one like a bulldog on a bone.

'ARROGANCE SINKS OBAMA'

Barack Obama sees worst poll rating drop in 50 years.

The decline in Barack Obama's popularity since July has been the steepest of any president at the same stage of his first term for more than 50 years.

Barack Obama's popularity has fallen steeply since being elected last year Photo: AFP Gallup recorded an average daily approval rating of 53 per cent for Mr Obama for the third quarter of the year, a sharp drop from the 62 per cent he recorded from April.

His current approval rating –-- hovering just above the level that would make re-election an uphill struggle –-- is close to the bottom for newly-elected president. Mr Obama entered the White House with a soaring 78 per cent approval rating.

NO OBAMA IN 2012 --- HILLARY TO CHALLENGE.
Democrats never had the votes for a Public Option. They probably don't have enough to pass any form of HCR.
Nancy Pelosi repeated that the House health-care legislation WILL have a public option in it, while in the Senate Olympia Snowe and a bipartisan group of centrist senators is poised to stop the healthcare reform bill from even coming to the Senate floor if it contains the public option.
So let me see if I get this right, the bill WON’T pass if it DOES NOT have a public option and the bill WON’T pas s if it DOES have a public option.  Sounds to me like the Democrats are right on target...., right on target for getting nowhere!
The Democrats are pushing a whole cart full of lies.
1. If they tax the insurance companies, the insurance companies WILL pass on the increase to the customers in the form of higher rates.
2. If they tax business and their employees who already have insurance (thus taxing existing health-care benefits), the businesses WILL either reduce employee salaries to make up the difference, or the businesses WILL stop offering insurance to their employee’s altogether.  Either way the businesses will not allow the issue to cut into their bottom line, they will not allow it to cost them more money.
3. Whatever kind of final bill they come up with, IF it passes, IT WILL cause the cost of insurance to go up, not down, IT WILL INCREASE the size of the deficit, NOT DECREASE IT, and a lot of business WILL stop offering insurance to their employees so that the business no longer have to absorb that cost and the employees WILL have to turn to the government, which WILL drive up the cost of the heath-care plan.
The Democrats and the Obama administration are trying to push a bill through just so they can say they did it, period.  I say let them do it, the more they lie (which is what politicians do best) to the American people, the more it will come back and slap them in the face come next November, and they WILL get exactly what they deserve, their asses booted  right out of their cushy Washington jobs.
We don't need no stinking HCR. I have Tricare and it costs me a whole 100 bucks a month for the wife, kids and I. The socialists would have us believe that every American family can't afford a 100 bucks a month for cadillac healthcare coverage like me an dmy family enjoy.
In the sausage grinder that is a bill of this magnitude going through Congress there will be advances and set backs. The best thing we can do is wait and see what comes out of it. I won't get hopes up nor will I be depondant about any of it. Wheeling and dealing is how things get done in Washington. Democracy works.
...of course we need this alternative--  Gawd, Americans are so dumb.
There will never be a public option because congress has to many thieves in office, who are receiving to much money from the insurance industry.
I guess Washington is never going to change, even if the polls favor the public option. I wonder who voted these public officials in, because it sure reflects on them...
Let them filibuster I dare them to. Let them stand up and explain why some people can be denied healthcare. Let them go on for days on end before they vote it will let all of us know who should lose their job next time around. Write Congress and tell them to give up their public option. Why is letting these idiots filibuster not an option?
Okay that's it we can't have competition without the option and who ever is in the way should loose thr Democratic vote mine first this money and race game is sad.Since it is a game to some this attitude of the 60's that all it is fear for one day of a bvlack person trying to undo what has wronged our Nation greed and coruption so if no option just drop health care reform President Obama I like you and believed you could be that ONE if not just say so for people would undersatnd better than just going along with the status quo you will do more thing's but no option no bill passing one without it is a scam seee we bailed out finacial places but not our on stuggling families SIR if you ever had to remeber something Rev Wright taught you about this Nation now is the time to acknowlegde what you see Congressman Grayson is the only Democrat I see out their beside Mr Pelosi aqnd Madam please don't let us down neither no option means you have caved also and as a Woman you should be ashamed because you vote does count alot but sighning on with the boy's on something you know won't help is sad,Madam Speaker the time is now a trigger is the most pitiful ploy out their you'll will be shooting yourselves in the foot for this one but we Democrats want to know who has the majority in the House and Senate and what party is the President, see fro we just watched how the Republicans got what they wanted for their time in charged but the Demorcrats I thought came from main street /so Mr,Grayson you have the best approach telling the truth is fair and your stance should not be sold just because the President is a AFRO AMERICAN see if Hillary would have won not only women like Blanche but men like Baucus would have had no problem passing a Public Option because if the people had ask for it she would not sign anything other than that,or lets just disband the Democratic party for a while see I am upset jst because I tried to believe tha all those super delagates and Congress people who heard President Obama stomp knew what he wanted to do for main street but aare now showing their true color's now  see why his Cabinet was chosen the way it was they new he would need all the moral support he could because threw times even Satin new right from wrong but hatred always controled many had me and other donating their last 5,10,20 and some had 2dollar's some had 1hundred all for what we some of us had stop voting I guess we might as well go back to that seeing this crap of a game.
Strange, Nancy Pelosi is a good vote counter, one wonders if Obama, an ambivalent man bent around internal  conflict, dispatched Emanuel to wrest votes away from a robust public option . Obama's pandering to Olympia Snowe on the alter of bipartisanship -his empowering of her through congressional agents Baucus \Conrad has been outrageous, destructive of professed critical progressive purpose- and absurd. Only irrational impulse born compulsively out of  the president's internal conflicts can explain it.
