First Lady wades back into health debate

From NBC's Athena Jones
WASHINGTON -- For the second time in as many months, First Lady Michelle Obama entered the contentious fray over health care, urging breast cancer survivors and their advocates not to lose heart in what may seem like an uphill battle to get legislation through Congress.

She made the remarks at an event she hosted with Dr. Jill Biden to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pair were joined on stage by three breast cancer survivors struggling to pay for health coverage, because their cancer, though in remission, was deemed a pre-existing condition.

The first lady said that while progress had been made battling the disease, the fight would not be finished until the health care system was revamped. She cited a Department of Health and Human Services report that showed that even breast cancer patients with employer-sponsored insurance paid an average of more than $6,200 in out-of-pocket costs per year and some paid as much as $30,000 or more, while those without insurance struggle to pay for care. She said caps on coverage hurt cancer patients and that other women suffered because they could not pay for needed screenings.

"There are people in this country who have breast cancer, but don't even know it because they can't afford a mammogram," Obama told the crowd gathered in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden on the east side of the White House. "This is not acceptable in this country. This is something that could happen to any of us."

While the first lady has spent much of her time this year focusing on non-controversial issues like nutrition, support for military families and the arts, she has increasingly begun to address areas of policy that are much more contentious. Last month, at an event with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Obama spoke passionately about health care as a women's issue, pointing out disparities in premiums for women and arguing that "true equality for women" required revamped health-care system.

Today's event seemed to be an indication that the White House has become more comfortable with using what officials have long called one of the administration's most powerful voices to push the president's agenda.

"There's a belief that if you've already fought cancer you shouldn't have to also financial insurance companies to get the coverage you need at a price that you can afford," Obama said.

She said the health care bills before Congress would prevent insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, ban caps on coverage and require basic preventive care at no extra charge, but reminded the audience that the challenge was getting the legislation passed.

"We know that there are all sorts of myths and misconceptions out there and we know there are folks who will do anything they can to stop reform, because for whatever reason, they want to keep things the way they are," she said. "From where we stand now it might seem like an uphill battle, but fortunately folks like you know a little something about an uphill battle right? You know a thing or two about overcoming long odds and rallying people to an important cause."

About 90 people from advocacy groups, religious organizations, health care providers and research organizations -- the vast majority of them women who donned the pink breast cancer awareness ribbons --gathered under gray skies in the garden for the event. About a dozen members of congress, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), herself a breast cancer survivor, were also on hand.

In stressing the importance of early detection, Tina Tchen, who heads up the White House Council on Women and Girls, said that this year alone 200,000 cases of breast cancer would be diagnosed and 40,000 women would die.

Ron Indiana: Elise, SF: Thank you for your kind words.  San Francisco is beautiful and my most favorite city.

It is, if you don't mind the homeless, the illegal's, or the drunks and druggies hassling you for a couple bucks. And if you don't mind the smell, then yeah, it's a swell place.
Perhaps it might be better, Mr. President, if you were more concerned with the American People than with your image in the history books.
Dear Mr. President,

Why must the First Lady get directly involved in policy decisions and Administration promotion? She is not an elected official. Learn from Hillary Clinton's fiasco.

Where was the executive pay outrage from the Left when the University of Chicago Hospitals laid off over 500 workers in February 2009, shortly after the election? Many of the discharged workers were Teamster and SEIU union members, while earlier in January 2009, Michelle Obama quietly left her $327,000/year superfluous VP job at the U of C Hospitals. There was very little coverage of that event. The unions served their purpose to advance the election of Barack Obama, now they are thrown away like rags.

Republican answer:  F em' Not my problem, it's their fault for getting cancer.

As long as companies can decide to cover Viagra and not oral contraceptives for women, there really won't be 'equity'.  It is shameful what stands for acceptable business practices in this country.
Maybe the Obama's can take some of those millions they rake in at these fundraisers with the $34000/each rubber chicken dinners and help pay for needy peoples insurance?

Yeah, like that will ever happen.
The DNC says that over 40,000 americans per year die because they dont have healthcare.

Obamacare wont cover 1 person for over 4 years -
Will the DNC do the math?

I will help you DNC - 40,000 per year times 4 years is...
OVER 160,000 AMERICANS WILL DIE WAITING FOR OBAMA

And that doesn't cover the americans that are dying in Afganistan waiting for BoBO do decide.  Why is it taking so long for BoBo to decide what to do in Afganistan - Is George Soros out of the country and cant be reached?

"Dr." Jill Biden has a doctorate in Education. That means she knows how to indoctrinate little crumb munchers to liberal standards. FR of course wants you think she's a for real medical doctor. I doubt she'd know how to put a bandaide, but it does look like she did her husbands hair-plugs.

I'm sure Michelle knows all about patients being refused coverage.  She's the one that spear-headed the patient-dumping scheme at the Univ. of Chitcago Med Center.  Like any sane person would consider what she has to say about medical care.
As someone whose family works with women with breast cancer, I could not support this more.  There are so many women who do not get the mammograms they need, and so many women who can't afford the care they need if a mammogram finds something.  With 1 in 8 women getting breast cancer, there is little doubt that someone you know and love will be faced with this challenge.

HAVING INSURANCE DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE COVERED.  See the heartbreaking testimony of Robin Beaton before Congress, discussing how her insurance company dropped her 3 days before her double mastectomy because she had previously sought treatment for acne.  Her testimony is so courageous and brave, it really is worth a listen.
Pat -

You know how much I truly care about you and respect you; however, I can't buy into this for the following reason:

Both Kerry and Edwards voted for the resolution and I would bet my LAST dollar that most, if not ALL, democrats, liberals, etc. voted for that ticket over Bush/Cheney and many, PROUDLY did so!!

Had there not been an election after that vote, MAYBE you would have an argument, but there was an election!!

And anyone that voted Kerry/Edwards, who, by the way, Obama was the Keynote Speaker at THEIR DNC Convention in 2004, and NOW uses the "Hillary voted for war" - which is stupid in itself, is a hypocrite!! And if Obama was so outraged about the vote, WHY did he agree to be the Keynote Speaker?  I know, he had a presidential run in mind while running for US Senator, even though he promised a full six-year term!!

Also, while running for US Senator, he promised over and over again to "not give Bush one more penny for the war in Iraq" - yet hit the Senate and voted YES, YES, YES - that is, until the last vote when he was in the primary battle running for president!!

I voted for Obama; I just don't think he was qualified enough; I still don't!! He lied about FISA, voting in favor of giving telecom companies immunity; he didn't show up, conveniently, for Kyl/Liebermann and his excuse was ridiculous!!

He's bended and bended since taking office and I agree with you on one point, NO ONE should have voted for the Resolution; however, I DO NOT BELIEVE Hillary Clinton voted that way to advance her career, and if you believe that, Obama voted to fund the war to advance his career, his presidential run, the run he PROMISED NOT to make and fulfill a full six-year US Senate term!!

I'm sick and tired of the "Hillary voted for war crap" - had Obama been in the US Senate, he would have voted the same way, or not shown up!!
--> The first lady said that while progress had been made battling the disease, the fight would not be finished until the health care system was revamped. <--

This is too much, just over the top. Michelle, all of medical R&D gets tanked with your husbands socialized health care. All the money will be used to pay for people's insurance. You think the pharmaceutical companies will continue research after cutting  billions off their costs? You think cancer research will continue when their funding is cut?

The entire Democratic leadership is clueless.
First Read; About 90 people from advocacy groups, religious organizations, health care providers and research organizations -- the vast majority of them women who donned the pink breast cancer awareness ribbons . . . . .

Like good liberals they're wearing ribbons! That shows they care! Isn't that enough?
Think Obama will say "Gonna" again? They must teach him to talk that way at Harvard.

---------------------------------------------

Now I'm just wondering...what you called President Bush during the last 8 years?

Silly me...blaming the Bush Administration!
I like the title - - did she have a pair of waders on?  Because the proposed HCR sure is a lot of horse crap to wade through.
There's good news and so-so news coming from the House. With votes still in a state of flux, Pelosi has decided to wait until early next week, probably Monday, to make the decision on whether to include the robust public option based on Medicare Plus 5%, or the negotiated rates public option

All of the "lean yes" members from earlier today have been confirmed as yes votes on the robust public option. Meaning now we're down to about eight that we really need to get. Luckily, folks whipping on the Hill know the most likely folks for us. As CaptUnderpants diaries, these are the members most likely to join in:

Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-8): 202-225-2542, 520-459-3115, 520-881-3588
Dennis Cardoza (CA-18): 202-225-6131; 209-383-4455, 209-527-1914
Joe Donnelly (IN-2): 202-225-3915, 574-288-2780
Curt Schraeder (OR-05): 202-225-5711, 503-588-9100
Lincoln Davis (TN-04): 202-225-6831, 931-490-8699, 931-473-7251
Glenn Nye (VA-2): 202-225-4215 757-326-6201
Jim Costa (CA-20): 202-225-3341, 661-869-1620, 559-495-1620
Rick Boucher (VA-9): 202-225-3861, 276-628-1145
If you live in the district of any of these Congresspeople, please call and urge him or her to pledge their vote to a robust public option, based on Medicare rates plus 5%. Make sure to call their district offices as well as DC offices. The impact of constituent calls in district offices is much greater because they generally don't get the same volume of calls as the DC office. The House needs to pass the strongest bill possible going into negotiations with the Senate. All of the things that House members have fought to have included in this bill, not just the public option, will be best preserved with the strongest possible bill being passed by the House.

As usual, leadership needs to hear from us, too. Here they are.

Steny Hoyer (MD-05): 202-225-4131, 301-474-0119, 301-843-1577
Chris Van Hollen (MD-08): 202-225-5341, 301-424-3501
Jim Clyburn (SC-06): 202-225-3315, 803-799-1100
John Larson CT-01): 202-225-2265, 860-278-8888
Henry Waxman CA-30): 202-225-3976, 323-651-1040
Chuck Rangel (NY-15): 202-225-4365, 212-663-3900
Below the fold, I have the list of members who have moved into the solid yes column. If you are so inclined, give them a thank you call.
Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Obama spoke passionately about health care as a women's issue, pointing out disparities in premiums for women and arguing that "true equality for women" required revamped health-care system.
-----------------------

The Obama administration is shameless. The best reseach for a cure and treatments for women's cancers, for all cancers, have been done on the good old USofA. Not one other country is better, not even close. You see Europe or Canada making break throughs on breast cancer? Nope. Maybe Cuba? Not a chance. Europe? Not again. The best research is done today in the US.

Wake up America, Obama is no friend to a better health care system in the US!
This, this propaganda, it is just beyond the pale. Using cancer victims as props for their socialist agenda. Ugly. Just ugly. This just keeps getting uglier for the liberal wing of the country.
What's next out of the dopes of nope... 'I know you are but what am I'?

Just because someone has had breast cancer is no reason to make the insurance companies insure them. Why should my premiums go up so your mom, daughter or grandma is covered?
The true facts of course are that if you have cancer, the best treatment you can get is in America. These "Cry me a river" stories the left keeps rolling out pulls at heart strings, but they are flat out lies. Let's have some of these women agree to go elsewhere, and not America, for their treatments if god-forbid they ever had the need. You won't see too many of them going elsewhere. Are their problems with US health care, certainly, but not to the level of what these women want to do to fix it, that is, to burn down the current system and start over.

These women are just so pathetic to watch.
Michelle -

Shut up and go buy another $5,000 purse - this time from an american company - you know, to help stimulate the economy.

So, now that unemployment is skyrocketing up along with our deficits - are you finally proud of america?
Yeah just wait until there are no insurance companies for the corrupt government to bully. Then the "choice" will be between the ruling classless' perks and some woman's mammogram or treatment. You really think these arrogant freaking people will cut their perks to provide anything for anyone? Based on what?
Michelle has the misconception that folks "want to keep things the way they are."  I think MOST people want insurance reform, but just not what is being proposed, number one.  And number two, they want to make sure we can afford it.
I am so tired of the whining from the Democrats and the Liberals (one in the same). "We want something, we want it now, and we won't stop crying until we get it!!".

Then you ask them how they want to pay for it - and the answer is always "Tax the other guy!".

And with ObamaCare, those numbers will increase.
Time for Sebelius to go to another Town Hall meeting with her good friend Arlen Specter. Apparently she didn't catch on to what real Americans want, and what they don't want.
first read, post the comments we take the time to write please

We know all about the promises from the Obama administration. Wasn't it not more then 7 months ago they told us they just had to have a job stimulus bill or else unemployment could go over 8% and it so great/wonderful that it would create 4 million jobs? Remember that promise America? Well, now they're back telling us more lies, this time about their wonderful health care reform plans.

Man up America. These people don't have a clue about what they are talking about.
I thought progressives were concerned about different points of view, and tolerance. It's only tolerance, when it's a viewpoint you agree with. Scary.
Cicero

Progressives/liberals are concerned about diversity and different view points, until those viewpoints  disagree with their doctrine/mantra. When that happens, they'll relentlessly attack and demonize you just like Obama is going after Fox News. Classless bunch those progressives.
And can the first lady explain how HCR will address the out-of-pocket expenses of $6,200.  Does HCR eliminate co-payments?  Does the "robust" Public Option eliminate co-payments?  What is the First Lady's response to the proposition that preventative medicine actually costs more?

content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/358/7/661

Perhaps the first Lady could comment on her salary while working at the U of C.
It's gotten that desperate for Obama that they have to put these women out on stage and essentially beg people to agree with them. Looks like the public has had enough of Obama and now he is hiding behind the skirts of his administration while they do his dirty work.
According to the GOP insurance plan, if you can't afford the mammogram, then you can't get one, and you die...oh well.
WHY Don't they do more Tea Bagging ??
That'll help 'em !!!

'...just 36% have a favorable opinion of the Republican Party, while 54% have a negative opinion...'

From Washington Monthly:

'...WORST GOP RATING IN A DECADE....
CNN, releasing the results of its new poll this afternoon, reports, "The Republican Party's favorable rating among Americans is at lowest level in at least a decade, according to a new national poll."

If this doesn't make the GOP nervous, it should. According to the poll, just 36% have a favorable opinion of the Republican Party, while 54% have a negative opinion. When was the last time a CNN poll showed Republicans with a worse rating? According to the internals (pdf), it was December 1998 -- 11 years ago -- the same week House Republicans impeached then-President Bill Clinton and the GOP's favorability rating dropped to 31%.

On the other hand, a 53% majority have a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party. Here's another homemade chart showing the difference between the two.

Now, Republicans can obviously still turn things around. As we talked about the other day, it's certainly possible that by this time next year, an anti-incumbent attitude will be strong enough to deliver significant gains for the GOP in the midterms.

But results like these have to be disheartening. President Obama's poll numbers have fallen in recent months, and so have the Democrats' support in general. But Republicans have not only failed to capitalize, they're actually getting less popular and finding fewer Americans willing to even consider themselves members of the party. The GOP is simply moving backwards.

It occurs to me that the most frightening electoral scenario imaginable for Democrats right now would be a Republican Party that cleaned up its act, started taking public policy seriously, moved towards the American mainstream, and stopped taking orders from talk radio and teabaggers -- the kind of steps that might improve a 36% favorable rating.

Fortunately for Dems, there's no reason to think this might happen...'

Gee !!
They saved us fron 'Death Panels', Right ?
They Accomplished the Mission in Iraq, right ?
They balanced the Budget, right ?
They kept Terri Schiavo alive, right ?
They hung out in the Minneapolis Airport's Men's room, right ??

WHY don't people like Republicans ?
Anyone who receives a salary of more than three hundred thousand dollars per year for a part-time
job at a medical facility has no business in this issue....

If she were truly concerned with the poor and un-insured people, she would have taken an appropriate salary - say around twenty grand per year and asked that facility to use the remainder to pay the expenses of treating those withoutinsurance...

This is just another great example of the audacity of the arrogant and self-serving first family.  This poor excuse for an administration can not come to an end quickly enough.
When calling for that promised transparency, they should ask Obama to list those 600,000 jobs he promised for the summer.
Sixty percent (60%) of all/total bankruptcy in the United States are medical bankruptcies.  In countries like England, France, Switzerland, Canada, etc. there are zero medical bankruptcies.

Thanks to Michele, Jill, Kathleen,Amy,Debbie, Tina and Nancy-Ann de Parle and all those who are working around the clock to improve the unseemly, chronic and worsening health fiasco in our country.
Aren't THEY CLEVER ???
The Georgia GOP are disguising their mailers to look like official government mail

Is that one of Newt Gingrich's 'Great Ideas' ??
Myabe they cand sell you some 'real diamonds' too

From Talking Points Memo:

'Georgia Republicans Send Political Mailer Disguised As ‘Official’ Census Survey

11 Alive, a local Georgia news station, reports today that the Georgia Republican Party is sending out a political mailer disguised to look like an official U.S. Census survey. The news station learned of the scam when a voter called the station saying she was “upset” that Georgia Republicans would send out such a mailer, given that many Georgians, especially senior citizens, will not realize that it’s a political ploy and not an actual Census survey:

“I got real upset ’cause I think a lot of people would just automatically fill it out,” [Anne Wilson of Smyrna] told us in a Thursday TV interview, “It’s their civic duty; by law they have to fill out the census. Turns out I and many others across the country have received the same survey letter which is titled the “2009 Congressional District Census”.

The outside of the envelope is stamped “Do Not Destroy, Official Document”. The survey lists a specific congressional district and includes an individual “Census Tracking Code”, with the request, “Please Respond by: November 16, 2009″. [...]

“I could see a lot of my neighbors that are older who would get something like this in the mail and fill it out,” she adds, “all the information, every little section, and send in money.”

The Georgia GOP also sent the mailer to the 8th Congressional District Chair for the Democratic Party of Georgia, who promptly snapped a picture, which his wife placed on her blog:

She writes, “What a hoot! I wonder where the RNC is getting their lists these days, but do appreciate them wasting their donor’s money this way.”...'
To all you supporting this nonsense of a Bill including our congress/President.  MY money is NOT YOUR money.  Mandating every American pay for a health care policy and fining/criminalizing it is Socialism/Communism.  They are saying that they know better than you how to use YOUR money.  When are you going to wake up and tell them "get your hand off my wallet"!!!  Also two points to assist in proving this is bad legislation; one, how much will a policy cost for a 25-35 year old male/female?  No idea? How about a 25 year old male/female that smokes?  Still no clue right?  I hear all day "Policies will be cheaper"  How? Just by making everyone buy a policy, where is the assurance that the policies will be affordable? (you will all buy my chocolate cupcakes...I will still charge one thousand dollars for each, but thanks for making me richer) two; cant turn me down for a policy even if I have a pre-existing condition, but what again says those will be affordable?  I have cancer, what is my price for a policy?  10k dollars a year?  20k?  3 guys walk into a insurance agency, 1 great health, works out, but smokes, 1 regular joe blow, 1 overweight (per some chart), all 25 years old, who pays more for their policies? Should they even pay more?  No clue right?  Remember this is what some of you are asking for with this Bill.  The politicians don't care really whats in it, or even if It will help...they are just trying to pass it because they feel you will vote for them if it is done.  Also ask yourself this...If it is about saving lives/dropping costs to help Americans. Why does it start taking your money now, but doesn't begin to help until 2013?  And why don't the penalties start rolling in until when you file taxes in 2014?  After the 2010, 2012 elections and again 2014 elections?  Freedom from consequences, the choices our congress makes.

Also for the mis-informed out there ...this article makes plain you are not getting what you asked for ...

updated 5:07 p.m. CT, Wed., Oct . 21, 2009
WASHINGTON - Despite promises by President Barack Obama, more than 70 million Americans who have health insurance through their jobs could be open to higher costs or denials of some coverage under a leading overhaul plan making its way through Congress.  That's because large employers that directly assume the cost and risk of health coverage for their workers — including Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Caterpillar Inc. and Xerox — wouldn't be subject to the same rules and restrictions that would be imposed on health insurers in the measure approved this month by the Senate Finance Committee.  Large companies that offer their workers such coverage are lobbying hard to keep the status quo and be shielded from costly new regulations and requirements in the final health measure currently being negotiated behind closed doors by Obama's top aides and leading Democrats.   Not all Democrats want to go along.  "I want to make very clear that we cannot promise the American people that the insurance reforms they have been hearing so much about will benefit everyone, when the reality is that this bill leaves out" up to 55 percent, or 73 million people covered by such arrangements, said Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W. Va., when the Finance panel met recently to debate the measure. He tried unsuccessfully to change the legislation to require those plans to obey all rules applying to insurers.
What should bother everyone is the examples of these three women and the countless similar ones who cannot get health insurance because they have pre-existing conditions.  Yet reading earlier remarks, it is obvious that the right doesn't much care about anyone as long as it isn't them.  As a wealthy and innovative country, we should be ashamed that something as basic as health care availability for every citizen is turned into a social and political war.

What really struck me reading the first thoughts after getting home this afternoon was how quickly the right jumped on the media chatter about she said/he said, she didn't quite say that and now according to the right the "public option is dead" again.  This is crazy, they are fine tuning the legislation, nothing wrong with that.  I have always suspected many on the right as being sheep following whatever is said and now I know.  And there's always the "all" Americans hate Nancy Pelosi line which is nonsense--what some on the right hate is a strong woman who knows how to get something done.

Anyone else notice that the closer we get to an actual health care bill, the louder and shriller the right becomes both here and on the Hill?
Who among us has not had a wife, daughter, family member, friend, or associate who has been touched by breast cancer?   Who among us could be against having health insurance pay for breast cancer screenings, even if only as a means of avoiding higher costs for treatment down the line?

Who among us has so little compassion?

Oh, yes.  I forgot.  We call them insurance companies.  But we really ought to call them death panels, don't you think?  Talk about cold, calculating -- not to mention misogynistic -- determinations about who lives and who dies, and when.

How could government-sponsored health care possibly be worse than this?

I say this as a nine-year survivor who can be casual about it today because my physician was alert and my insurance company paid up front, and by doing so avoided much more in costs down the line.

Not to mention what they saved me and my family.

Why shouldn't everyone have the chance that I had?  Why shouldn't your wife, your mother, your loved one, your friend?

So that some guy can make $57,000 per hour?

If that's what you think, then tell me to my face.  But when you do, just remember, this isn't about me anymore, it's about YOUR family this time.

slow day
How many White House Czars does it take to change a lightbulb? None! They'd just soon blame Bush and remain in the dark.
3...2...1 for the snarky, thinly veiled racist comments from the right.
Who could sanely argue against the First Lady's plea for affordable healthcare in this country? Her stats are exactly right---even with healthcare, there's thousands of out of pocket dollars the patient must pay.
