From NBC's Athena Jones
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After spending the morning discussing the strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan with his national security team at the White House, President Obama told the crowd at the Naval Air Station here Monday afternoon that he would not rush his decision on whether to deploy more troops to the volatile region.

In brief remarks to some 3,500 sailors, Coast Guard, Army, Guard and Reserve personnel and military families, Obama thanked servicemen and women for their willingness to sacrifice for their country and called that service an inspiration to him as commander-in-chief, a role he called his greatest honor.

"While I will never hesitate to use force to protect the American people or our vital interests, I also promise you this-and this is very important as we consider our next steps in Afghanistan: I will never rush the solemn decision of sending you into harm's way," the president said. "I won't risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary. And if it is necessary, we will back you up. Because you deserve the strategy, the clear mission, the defined goals and the equipment and support you need to get the job done."

The war in Afghanistan has grown increasingly unpopular with the American public, with casualties mounting as troops fight a resurgent Taliban. The president and his national security team have held a series of meetings to discuss how to move forward in the region, including whether to approve a troop increase in the tens of thousands.

Some Republicans critics -- most recently former Vice President Dick Cheney -- have accused Obama of being too slow to make a decision, something they argue endangers American troops.

In a gaggle aboard Air Force One en route to Florida, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said a decision on strategy in Afghanistan "could come at any moment" but said could not say whether that would be before or after the Nov. 7 presidential runoff there.

The president also addressed the 14 servicemembers killed in helicopter crashes in Afghanistan today, saying his prayers went out to them, their civilian colleagues and their families.

"They were willing to risk their lives, in this case, to prevent Afghanistan from once again becoming a safe haven for al Qaeda and its extremist allies," he said. "And today, they gave their lives -- that last full measure of devotion-- to protect ours."

Obama met privately with soldiers' families -- Gold Star families who have lost loved ones -- before the event and made a special point of honoring the family of Michael Scott Speicher, the Navy captain who died in Desert Storm and remains were returned here to Jacksonville earlier this year.

OBAMA: WON'T RUSH AFGHAN DECISION

Why be in a hurry now?
The cynic in me says Obie doesn't want to decide on Afghanistan before he gets health care reform through the congress so as not to upset the apple cart of any support it might have. But Obama wouldn't leave the military and the good people of Afghanistan hanging like that, would he?
OH PLEASE!! President Obama needs to bring our men and women home; there is NO winning!!

Kerry is right about "the gross mishandling of this war;" however, he's dead wrong if he thinks sending more troops will help; it won't!! It was the gross mishandling of the war that cost us capturing bin laden and those responsible for 9/11, in addition to giving women and children a chance in Afghanistan!!

Bring 'em home, now!! This war is not salvageable and that is thanks to SLITHERING DICK and Dumbya!!  Al-Qaeda is no longer in Afghanistan; BushCo allowed them to flee; it’s over and it’s been over for a long time now!!
Kerry says, We now have to choose a smart way forward so that no one is ever compelled to ask whether we've made a mistake in staying."  If we stay, Sen. Kerry, we will be making a HUGE mistake; if we stay, if we send more troops, this DOES become Obama’s war; if we stay and lose more men and women, it’s on President Obama!! Bring them home NOW!!
Dithering. Obama is.
There is no decision other than to bring the troops home!! PERIOD!!

Even VP Biden knows!!
What a REFRESHING CHANGE from 8 L O N G years of cowboy diplomacy!

This ought to get the righties howling... you betcha!
Obama isn't in much of a rush on a lot of things. Creating jobs, health care reform, reducing the deficit, Afghanistan war effort, improving the economy. Nothing but time, right Barack?
It's been said time and time again,

"It's easier to speak of being a leader than to be a leader"

This has never been more true than with Barack Hussein Obama.

How many lives perished today as a result of his inability to make a decison.

Obama is not a leader, except over the edge of the cliff.

Obama is at this point, a big disappointment as our President. The hype was great the truth is sad.

Bush and Obama have both let America down
New title on the official seal of the POTUS - "Ditherer In Chief"
He knows not what he is doing.  When are you people going to admit that Obama was a mistake?
Why the change, Obie?  It was such an "emergency" that you had to rush through your pork-laden stimulus package. It was such an "emergency" that you tried to rush through your HCR in August. Fake fabricated crises.  Now that people are dying, all of a sudden you want to take your time?
Obie will not RUSH this.  He hates Rush.
Won't rush!!  It's been two months.  I would hate to know he was taking his time.  Maybe he thinks if we just let the Taliban kill everyone then we won't need to be there anyway and the point will be moot.  Then he can get by without a decision being made like he usually does.
Sounds like Obama is channeling his inner Jimmy Carter. Carter was a Hawk when compared with Obama.
Obama learn how to salute yet? Right hand Mr. Obama, the right hand! And not so hard else you might hurt yourself.
Where's Feisty telling Obama to grow a pair?

Too funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What to do, What to do, What to do.........

Can he drag it out until after 2010 elections????????

The dude is more concerned about his ego than the folks on the ground dying.

Real adult leadership, with no marbles.  LOL
At last, a President who treats our men and women serving in the armed forces with consideration and respect.  It is nice to have a President who actually THINKS instead of shooting from the hip.  Keep up the good work, Mr. President.  There are millions of us out there who support you regarding Afghanistan and HCR.
It's all about politics people. All about politics.
This is MY WAR soldier, now back off!

You mean he isn't going to rush headlong into a war based on lies and deceit like the bushies did? Good deal.

Having said that we should remove all troops from Iraq and concentrate them in pakistan and afghanistan where the real terrorists are, and always were.
FR, would you be so kind as to elaborate on Obama's service to the United States of America as a soldier, conscientious objector, VISTA participant, National Guardsman, or internationally as a Peace Corps volunteer?  We don't want to hear about anyone else...just about your god-boy Hussein.  Oh, and by the way, "community organizer" is not an option; our local Boy Scouts contribute more on a Saturday morning than has this egotistical, elitist politician in his privileged, sorry-ass lifetime.
President Obama told the crowd at the Naval Air Station here Monday afternoon that he would not rush his decision on whether to deploy more troops to the volatile region.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Let a few thousand more Americans die Barack until you and Rahm decide what is POLITICALLY the best outcome for YOU. It is all about YOU.

Lets watch and see if the death tolls from H1N1 or the Mideast wars rise faster.

Either way, Americans suffer from your trademark indecision.
Just read the AP article on President Obama's "crafty" media strategy, a choice of words that itself shows the crafty way in which the corporate media biases stories in favor of Republicans and their agenda. No media hack would have dare call Bush's strategy for getting us into the Iraq war "crafty."

While the media often uses verbiage that implies bad motives to Democrats like "crafty," it usually does the opposite for Republicans, choosing words that imply good motives to them.

I've seen lots of "mainstream" media articles asserting things such as "Republicans are concerned with Obama's high deficits," even though they give no evidence that they are truly concerned or rather merely posturing in a way that is cynical and, yes, crafty.

The "liberal bias" of the media is a myth concocted by the radical right and spread by the corporate media as received wisdom.
While he is considering all the options so that new troops won't be in harms way, he is allowing for the deaths of the troops who are there.  If President Obama doesn't want to make the decision, then fall back on he leadership of the troops to make the decisions.  To expect praise for protecting those over in the United States from having to face the perils of Afganistan, he is leaving those already there hanging.  Either give them the equipment and troops necessary to do the job or bring them all home now.  While so many are dying again with the resurgence of the Taliban, sitting and trying to decide isn't acceptable.  Waiting for the outcome of an election isn't acceptable either.  Using our troops as a political pawn is unacceptable.
That's because he doesn't have the guts to make a decision. He's lost.

But he'lll want to shove a health care bill down the throats of Americans in a New York minute.

Get him out of the White House. The man is a mouse.
Last full measure of devotion?  Devotion to what, if the mission isn't clear, if the strategy isn't determined?

Or are you saying that THESE volunteers weren't worth the deliberate decision-making process you're now engaging in for future volunteers?

Talk about situational ethics.  Sheesh.

I hate to say this, Mr. President, but on this issue you're starting to talk exactly like George W. Bush.

If you can't make a decision, then get out of Hell's Kitchen.  Bring the troops home and at least let them devote their "last full measure" to protecting the Homeland.  Because right now, without some kind of clear mission, they're only protecting the poppy crop.
FR: Some Republicans critics -- most recently former Vice President Dick Cheney -- have accused Obama of being too slow to make a decision, something they argue endangers American troops.
----------------------------------------------

Actually, they don't "argue" that; they merely assert it. Cheney and the other ranting neoconservatives have presented no argument whatsoever as to why Obama's taking time to assess the need for more troops in Afghanistan has endangered the troops already there any more than Bush endangered American troops in Afghanistan by refusing to augment the troops that he bogged down there for seven long years -- something that Obama has already done.

Let's see, a President with no military experience vs. our Generals who are there and know we need more troops. Who do you think knows best?
Weigh all the options, consider all the aspects, what ifs etc and make a wise decision. Much better than knee jerk shoot first and ask questions if you get around to it kind of decision making. A certain knee jerk decision of the recent past (2003) caused the US to lose much treasure and valuable young lives. We don't want rash decisions like that again.
An eight year old war that the prior administrtion did not review its strategy for years nor add troops while the war continued to creep and get worse. Now we cant wait a few weeks for a new administration to get it right.
Won't rush a decision?  I don't think taking several months is rushing it.  I'm just glad I'm not relying on President Obama to save me from a burning building.  It seems strange that he'll rush other things like the economy, and health care reform, but when we're dealing with a national security issue that is literally a matter of life and death he can't seem to find the time to deal with it.
As someone pointed out earlier, even George Will thinks "dithering" is a good thing.  Bush/Cheney rushed to war in Iraq without listening to Powell and others in the military and without considering the consequences in blood and treasure.  But the worse part of the Bush/Cheney decision was the failure to finish the war in Afghanistan first, the failure to support the troops there whose lives were on the line every day; that's where al Qaeda and the Taliban were and the failed GOP strategy has allowed the resurgence of the Taliban and Osama bin Laden is still free.  Cheney doesn't deserve to lick the boots of any military person.  My anger at Cheney has nothing to do with his being republican but is because of his cavalier attitude toward the troops who for 8 years have been fighting in Afghanistan because Cheney preferred Iraq instead; how dare he open his mouth.
Taking a careful approach before putting more troops in harm's way is called LEADERSHIP.  If the generals are allowed to make policy, we will likely have another Viet Nahm. They always want more!

The GOPers have no shame. After neglecting Afghanistan for 7 years, they criticize the President's measured approach.

It does not seem reasonable for us to spend huge resources to defend a tribal society that will likely lapse back as soon as we leave anyway.
Obama said not to rush him on making a decision about Afghanistan. He has a 2-day campaign trip to Florida planned, so don't crowd him about life and death matters when his calendar is set for political campaigns.

Hope the tea bag group down there gives him a warm welcome, well if they even get to see him, that is.
