Lieberman to vote for a filibuster

Posted: Tuesday, October 27, 2009 1:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Liberals have one more reason to love to hate Joe Lieberman.

Politico's reporting that the independent Connecticut senator who caucuses with the Democrats -- and backed the Iraq war and staunchly supported John McCain's presidential bid -- said he would vote with a potential Republican filibuster of Majority Leader Harry Reid's bill because it includes a public option.

Here are the quotes:

"We're trying to do too much at once. To put this government-created insurance company on top of everything else is just asking for trouble for the taxpayers, for the premium payers and for the national debt. I don’t think we need it now."

He'd vote against a plan with a public option “even with an opt-out because it still creates a whole new government entitlement program for which taxpayers will be on the line. ... I've told Sen. Reid that if the bill stays as it is now I will vote against cloture."

Which Democrat handed him a gavel again?

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports that Senior aides to Lieberman just confirmed to us again that "Senator Lieberman is strongly inclined to vote with Reid on cloture but would likely oppose a bill with a public option."

That means Lieberman plans to join Democrats on the first vote to get the bill to the debate stage on the Senate floor. Then if a public option remains, Lieberman would likely go against the Democrats and vote no.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Talking Points Memo on what Lieberman might do...

Lieberman is saying that he's pretty much OK with letting senators offer amendments--try to change the legislation, move it in any direction they deem necessary. But when that process is all over, and Harry Reid wants to hold an up or down vote on the final product, Lieberman's saying he'll join that filibuster, if he's not happy with the finished product. Point blank.

News: Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Tuesday that he’d back a GOP filibuster of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s health care reform bill.

So that's it Liberals/Democrats. At best, you're stuck on 59.

Meanwhile....October is the deadliest month in Afghanistan since the war started.
Joe LIEberman is really a Republican in cheap clothing. Maybe it is just a publicity stunt. "See me, I'm Joe LIEberman and I'm important".

What is Senator Lieberman's alternative? What does he propose that would guarantee AFFORDABLE healthcare for all Americans? Just like a Republican.
Still less then half support the public option, 48%. So the Mother of all Entitlements can't even get to the 50% mark? And Reid somehow thinks this is great news? That man, and the Democrats, have lost their collective minds. And this after a mulit-million dollar  marketing campaign and PR run from the WH and the cheerleading media. Topped out at 48%. That's it?
Wow - Lierberman makes a lot of sense after all.
Why don't the voters of Connecticut start a recall drive? Like now.
This is the same thing as last year when Obama was all things to all people. And he was that way because the media, as they are doing now with HCR, would never press Obama on what he meant. "Hope and Change"? Hope for what? What are you going to change? The answer to what the change was is that Obama wants to involve government into everyone's daily lives. Not quite what everyone expected for sure.

Now the media is doing the same with HCR? "Do you want a public option?" the media asks. Well, the public option is, like Obama, never defined, never pinned down. It was what the person being questioned wants it to be.

The media should ask the question this way - "Do you favor a government run alternative health care plan similar to Medicare, the same Medicare that has $37 trillion dollars of unfunded obligations?" Lets see what numbers that question brings in.
What else can you expect from Lie-erbman? I wonder if the role was reversed between him in McCain. Maybe Mc Cain whispered in Lie-bermann's eye ear how much money he could gain from the insurance company if he votes against cloture. Lie-berman will feel the wrath of his constituency.

Lie-bermann another "Dopes of Nope.
when the president came in to office he should have busted Lieberman out of committees and told his if he wanted john mccain as president so bad then don't sit on the fence, join the republican party, but NOOO he was trying to be nice, and this is how he is paid back, GEE thanks Jo!!!!!
Hooray for Joe.....showing good sense
Will more follow?
We have all read history and how LBJ had to really fight and fight to get his legislation passed.

I have a question -

Is President Obama fighting to bring home health care legislation with a public option?

He asked us all to fight for it. We did. In time, effort and money, during a very very bad economy I might add.

Seems we've done our part. When is he going to do his part and bring this thing home?

Or at the very least - FIGHT to bring it home.

I do not pretend to know what's going on behind the scenes in these meetings. But it seems there's a lot of Democrats lately asking for Obama's help to include the public option.

Just wondering what's going on with him.
Who gives a flip about Lieberman???? He became irrelevant back during the election when he had his head shoved up McCain's crack.

Now, when are one of you "new organizations" going to start demanding answers from the Party Of No????
Where the flip is their healthcare policy????
Where the flip is the GOP plan to create jobs????

Can any of you a-holes out there please explain to all of us just exactly ANY sort of ideas about ANYTHING that the GOP is offering???

Time to start demanding that they put up or shut up.

And as we all know they got NUTTIN!!!!

FR: "Which Democrat handed him [Lieberman] a gavel again?"

Liberman is an Independent. The Democrats turned their back on him during his last re-election. Rather then switch parties though, Lieberman ran, and won, as an Indie. The Democrats are lucky Joe still even talks to them.
Ahh, poor liberals. Got your nose smacked again.
Say good-bye to your chairmanship, Joe!  You didn't deserve it in the first place!
I would say to Bennadick Lieberman,By,By, so long, its been good to know ya,It's not that we hate ya Joe, but you are like a anchor, and this is a train,so we don;t need you, now you can slither back to your rock and crawl under it.Traitor.
And this should surprise us?  PLEASE!! Judas Liebermann should have been kicked to the curb long ago, and ESPECIALLY after his appalling backing of McCain during the election!! But NO, President Obama defended him and let him keep his Committee!!

One more sign that the democratic majority and President Obama learned ZERO from President Clinton's administration!!  The vast majority of democrats wanted Liebermann OUT, but thanks to Obama, he's still in; and thanks to Obama, we get more of his BS!! I would have much rather seen Liebermann kicked to the curb and have a 59-vote majority than a bogus 60-vote filibuster majority because everyone knew, we DID NOT have it with this jerk!!

I'm more upset with President Obama than Liebermann; I stopped expecting anything out of Liebermann in 2000, when he insisted military ballots postmarked AFTER the mandated date be counted!! I think he was working for Bush, never Gore!!

Just sickening!!
AFGHANISTAN IS OBAMA'S WAR BUT THE CHICKEN-IN-CHIEF DOESN'T KNOW WHETHER TO FIGHT OR RUN!
No one needs Lie-berman or the rest of the blue dogs(yellow dogs personally I don't care what color thy are)just like we don't need a Snowe job.

AFGHANISTAN IS OBAMA'S WAR ... (Sent Tuesday, October 27, 2009

When President Obama starts a war then and only then will it be his; idiot.
First Read writes: "Which Democrat handed him a gavel again?"

Which voter said the Democrats could socialize health care? Obviously not as many as you think.
Last time lieberman was a liberal was the 2000 election.  I wouldn't be suprised if he was a plant from the republican party.
too funny
so its 59 now what republican are you getting to cross vote with dingy Hary again?
Let's see if liberals on this board support his independent thinking the way they said repulicans should support Olympia Snowe's independent thinking.

My guess is no... Especially the filthy redhead.

It's just a guess though!
If Lieberman is against it, and Snowe is also against Reid, that leaves a lot of cover for the likes of the moderate Democrats, about 12 of them by my count. Reid probably doesn't even have 50 votes for his health care scheme.
Quick, how much money does MoveOn have to put out smear ads against Lieberman?
There a glut of milk. A glut people! And farmers are killing their cows because of it. What is Obama going to do about that!
This MUST finish Lieberman.
IDIOT!!!!

Joe can expect a call from the White House VERY soon...
I certainly saw this coming.  He's another Phil Gramm -- a Republican in all but name, only caucusing with the Democrats as a spy, to leak the caucus's strategy to the other party.  Phil Gramm didn't switch parties until he was actually caught at it, and sanctioned.  We need to take away all his committee assignments if he persists in this, and let him become the 41st Republican Senator if he pleases.
Lieberman is probably just trying to get some camera action. We all know he's an attention whore. He has been one forever. He'll probably back down after he has urges met.
Time for Lieberman to remember that it was President Obama who allowed him to keep his chairman seat. What can be given can be taken away.

He's as bad as Bayh!!
He's bluffing. Doing this would end his career because he is already on thin ice with the Democrats that voted him back into office.
THIS IS TERRIBLE!!! ANY IDEAS ABOUT WHAT WE CAN DO?

Now Reid is a smart man, right. Did Lieberman lie to him? What gives?
What else could we expect from "Joe the traitor"? he's ball of mucus.
Wasn't it President Obama?! I said they should have kicked him out of the caucus...signed a petition demanding it in fact. Maybe this will finally convince them to do it and teach the potus a valuable lesson about where nice guys usually finish.
Tell me again why we let him 'caucus' with us?  The DNC money is good enough for LIEberman; but not the policies.  When is CT going to send him packing?

Doesn't he have some bearings to check somewhere?
HA!  Eat that Harry!  You gave Joe the gavel because his 60th vote was soooo important to undisputed Democratic control of the Senate.  Now this is how he repays you - depriving you of the very vote you claimed you were securing....you are truly the Worst Senate Majority Leader ever!!
I cannot believe Lieberman was ever chosen as a Democratic Vice Presidential candidate. He lost his debate with Darth Cheney and effectively was kicked out of the Party in his home state. Now this out of touch Senator is embracing Republican values again to try to stop a debate on issues relating to health care. Why doesn't he just declare himself as a Republican and get it over?
He has the Party of NO's beliefs and has continuously angered his Democratic colleagues. If I were Reid, I'd strip him of every committee post and make him irrelevant, like the GOP.
It's also easy  to see why he doesn't want a Public Option and has even stated so- The Hartford Insurance company is from his home state and he's content in defending thier profits and coverage denials over his constitutents needs and voters of Connecticut. They should vote his butt out of office!
Go ahead, Joe, make my day. Stand up in front of the cameras and filibuster down health care in full view of the American people. This is one show I want to see. One way or another health care will pass, and folks like Joe will be held accountable for their actions by the voters.
Stop letting him caucus with the Dems - tell him he's not invited.
Wow - What an embarrassment that this man once held the number two spot on our national ticket. Time to let this Judas go into free fall, but first , strip him of his committee chairmanship and do it loudly.. His once-upon-a-time status as a social liberal is as reliable as his voice (I always thought he sounded like Alf.)

Say it ain't so Joe, now let me tell you where to go...
Hopefully Connecticut voters will take him to task this time. Not only does he approve getting its citizens killed in foreign adventures, but now he sides with the insurance  and pharmaceutical industries against those voters. Please, don't let this wolf in sheep's clothing get away with this outrage!!
I don't understand how any Senator can in good conscience vote for the insurance companies and against the interest of their people.  The only rationale I can think of is that they feel they are working for the corporations rather than for the people.  Those are the Senators who should be voted out by their constituents regardless of how much money is given to them by the corporations.
Joe,

Why do you get the "public option" for yourself and deny the same to the very people who you force to pay for your "public option?"
Lie-berman is a fool
For once I agree with Lieberman!  Adding a government run health insurance "option" on top of what we have now is a terrible mistake.  Instead, we should outlaw all current health plans and make the government plan mandatory for every US citizen from conception to grave.  The health plans that exist today have had decades to prove their worth and they have failed us miserably!  Everything that's wrong with our health care system is connected with how we finance it.
If he can't be counted on to vote for closure with the democrates on a major policy initative his chairmanships should be removed because closure is a party issue. At the end he can vote his conscience for or against the final bill.
This "pre-existing condition" thing stills confuses me:  I don't have to pay premiums.  Then, when I get cancer, I will apply for insurance and because the government has stepped in, I can't get turned down due to my pre-existing condition.
Ah, now I get it.

Stick a fork in LibeRAT... he's done!
If Lieberman votes FOR a fillibuster ....

HE Should LOSE HIS SENIORITY

go caucus with the Republicans

Is this why Lieberman is saying that ???
