Political wagers fly for World Series

The World Series between the New York Yankees and Amtrak Corridor rival Philadelphia Phillies kicks off tonight.

And New York Gov. David Paterson and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell have laid down their bets -- weekend getaways for a fan of the other team.

"The state with the losing team will offer a weekend vacation to a resident of the state with the winning team," according to a Paterson press release. "Accommodations, meals and tickets for the vacation package will be donated by the respective companies, organizations and venues hosting the trip. The losing city will host the all-expenses paid weekend getaway. ...

"If the Yankees win, a New Yorker and guest will enjoy the luxury accommodations at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue, be treated to dinner at the Prime Rib, VIP access at a cultural event, as well as brunch at Parc in the inviting Rittenhouse Square during an all-access VIP weekend. If the Phillies win, a Pennsylvania resident and guest will stay at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers and will dine at the award winning 21 Club in midtown Manhattan. Transportation will be provided by Amtrak between Philadelphia and New York."

The governors aren't the only politicos making a wager. The U.S. senators from both states are offering up cheesesteaks or cheesecakes. Sens. Bob Casey and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania have offered to export a supply of cheesesteaks if the Yankees win. If the Phillies win, Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York will send over some cheesecakes from famed Brooklyn restaurant, Junior's.

The mayors of both cities have also announced their bets today -- participation in a service project in the other's city, wearing that city's team uniform. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would travel to Philly "and paint a mural on the side of a Philadelphia recreation center," Bloomberg NEWS reports. "If the New York Yankees prevail, [Philadelphia Mayor Michael] Nutter will be at the Albert Einstein Intermediate School in the Bronx painting open spaces."

And the wagers don't end there. New York's and Philadelphia's famed produce markets -- Hunts Point (NY) and Philadelphia Regional -- have offered to send a truckload of produce to the a food bank in the winning city.

No word on what Mets fans are supposed to do in all this.

I don't think Fiesty is anything like you described!! Her posts are filled with truths; sadly, it's those like you that refuse to accept the truth, move forward or do anything to help, that are hurting!!

Thanks Pam!

It feels GREAT to be a liberal/progressive these days and I’m PROUD to be ONE!

If the right wingers want to ‘label’ me a member of the ‘extreme far left’ well… that stiletto FITS and I’m gonna wear them! I’ve admitted previously here that you can’t lean much more left than I do! So the problem again with them is WHAT?

I apologize to no one for my lefties leanings and if they don’t like it… well… to quote President Obama… I don’t lose any sleep over it!  lol lol lol

But it seems like they SURE do! lol lol lol

Maybe a nice cup of hot tea can help them out!  ;0)

It's a WONDERFUL time to be a 'lefty'!
Pam, he's the President of the United States. Of course he should be held accountable. So shouldn't Hillary.
Pat, Boston, MA (Sent Wednesday, October 28, 2009 1:28 PM)

One more thing.......

And President Obama campaigned against the "anti-establishment" politicians in Washington; he called anyone who voted for the Iraq Resolution "irresponsible;" he promised to bring swift action and bring our men and women home!!

Now, who did he select as his vice presidential running mate?  Joe Biden, an establishment politician who voted YES on the Iraq War Resolution!! Personally, I like Joe Biden; however, personally, I found Obama's choice hypocritical!!

I was supporting Biden during the election; he was my first choice but he dropped out!! Hillary Clinton was never my first choice; she was next to last and Obama was last.  She became my choice when it was narrowed down to one candidate who was qualified, and another that I didn't feel had enough experience yet!! But what was done to her in the media was horrible; if you support her clothes, laugh, legs, hair, etc. etc. being mocked, fine; I didn't and I don't!!

How about you?  What did you think of Joe Biden's vote, or Obama selecting the very type of person he criticized and mocked during the campaign as his running mate?

Hmmmm...........!!
It's a WONDERFUL time to be a 'lefty'!

It's ALWAYS a wonderful day when you're a lefty!! :)

Keep up the GREAT work!!
Some great moments in World Series history:

1905: Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants pitches a third consecutive shutout in a Series in which all five games are shutouts.

1918: Boston Red Sox lefthander Babe Ruth runs his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 29. The streak had begun with the last 13 innings of a complete game against Brooklyn in 1916.

1920: Bill Wambsganss of the Cleveland Indians makes an unassisted triple play against Brooklyn.

1924: 400-game winner Walter Johnson gets his first World Series chance after 18 years, loses both his starts, but pitches three innings of scoreless relief to win the final game.

1929: The Philadelphia Athletics trail the Chicago Cubs, 8-0, in the seventh inning but rally for 10 runs in the bottom half to win, 10-8.

1932: Babe Ruth points toward the pitcher or center field after two strikes, then drives the ball over the center field wall for a then record 15th Series home run that enters legend as the "called shot."

1934: Brothers Dizzy and Paul Dean win two games each to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Detroit Tigers.

1947: Yankee pitcher Floyd (Bill) Bevens loses a no-hitter (and the game) with two outs in the ninth inning on a two-run double.

1954: Willie Mays of the Giants catches a drive by Vic Wertz of the Indians going away more than 450 feet from home plate and throws in to hold runners at their bases.

1956: The Yankees' Don Larsen pitches a perfect game to beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0.

1960: Bill Mazeroski homers in the ninth inning of the seventh game to give a Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates in which they were outscored 55-27 by the Yankees.

1975: Carlton Fisk, Red Sox catcher, homers in the 12th inning to win Game 6 and tie the Series with the favored Cincinnati Reds.

1977: Reggie Jackson, Yankee outfielder, sets a new Series record with his fifth home run, his third in the final game.

1986: Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner lets a routine ground ball get through his legs, allowing the New York Mets to score the winning run in the tenth inning of Game 6 and tie the Series. The Mets go on to win the seventh game.

1988: Injured Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson hits a ninth inning pinch hit come-from-behind two run homer off future Hall of Fame closer Dennis Eckersley to win Game 1. The underdog Dodgers go on to win in five games.

1993: Joe Carter hits a three run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 6-5 Philadelphia Phillies lead and give the Series to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews wager?

Pam, San Pedro, CA...Obama is a politician. He made promises. All politicians make promises but few of them follow through on those promises. Not because they lied or don't want to but because of circumstances, and forces beyond their control that make those campaign promises difficult to impossible. If Obama can get even a few of those promises fulfilled in 8 years he will have done more than most politicians.
eagle1776 (Sent Wednesday, October 28, 2009 1:38 PM)

As I stated above, he not only made many promises, he campaigned AGAINST the establishment candidate; therefore, no slack will be cut to him from me!!

He should have thought long and hard before he mocked politicians, you know, like the kind he is turning out to be!!
Pam, my point is to ask you not to be so hypocritical. You think Hillary Clinton is perfect. She is not. I hold everyone accountable for their pro-Iraq invasion vote.

My nephew just returned from Afghanistan, after having served in Iraq as well. He is 23 years old, which made him 15 years old when 9/11 happened.

Osbama Bin Laden is still alive. He should have been taken care of years ago.

I love the job Hillary Clinton is doing as Sec. of State. But if you're going to go after Obama for the decisions he needs to make, look to the people who put him in this position, including my own Senator Kerry.
__________
For anyone else who cares - Pam and I have known each other for a few years "on line". We went through the election together, from day one. She is a wonderful mother, wonderful daughter, loyal friend and a make no apologies for anyone liberal.

She is my all time favorite poster.
Chicago White Sox, 2005 World Series Champs!

Chicago Cubs? 101 consecutive years of failure.....and counting.
Pam, San Pedro, California (Sent Wednesday, October 28, 2009 1:09 PM)

Re: Lincoln Chafee -- you got that right - he should have changed parties long ago; last I read, he was going to run as an Independent. Don't know if he did or not.
Sharon IL (Sent Wednesday, October 28, 2009 1:50 PM)

I hadn't heard that, Sharon; I sure hope he does!! Great man indeed!!
Gee a trip to PA for the winner?  I want a trip to NY when the Yankees win.
Pat of Boston: You forgot to mention 1908 (Chicago Cubs last WS win) and 1980 (Phillies win first WS ever - and I was there!)
How about this wager,I bet the yankees will win this series,as they did the last two, with the help of the umps, that's right the help of the umps.Since the playoffs started the umps have given the Billionairs club every break they could have, see Billionair ball players expect the calls to go there way,and if you are a Yankee billionair ball player you expect every call to go your way all the time, not just playoff time. It's hard to watch a guy get tagged out at  second, and not even close be called safe ,or how small the strike zone is when Juice rod comes to the plate, and is walked and seen on first mouthing that it was a strike. This series may have had a different outcome if the umps where calling the games fairly, but I guess they feel sorry for the Billionairs club spending all that dough and not buying a winner,So the juice heads now are in the series, and the question everyone is asking, will A=Juice be everyones hero, will he have all the bimbos he is shagging put up on the jumbo tron for all of us to see.And will the umps call a fair series?
I bet I'll be watching something else.

I LOVE baseball, but this doesn't seem quite like the baseball that I love.  The Yankees are over-paid, over-hyped, and thanks to an East-Coast concentrated press corps, over-enamored with themselves.  After all, a multi-billion dollar investment in talent ought to pay off more often once every ten years or so.

She is my all time favorite poster.
Pat, Boston, MA (Sent Wednesday, October 28, 2009 2:11 PM)

Thank you, Pat; I agree with everything you have said!! I will try my best; I ask the same of others; so far, I haven't seen much of that here.  Very sad!!

And you, Pat, are one of my all-time favorite people!!
given Chuck Todd's follow through on his wager,...I'm not to invested in any of the others.  What gives, Chuck?  We weren't talking a brazilian for Pete's sake, just some facial hair.
jesse St Paul MN

Go Twins!!!  Awww they've already gone home.

PS Kate Hudson's Mom is better looking
Just got back and FR has been busy.  Haven't read all the posts yet but thanks for printing what people actually said during the polling.  Some thoughtful people and a few off the wall ones but mostly reasonable.  The only thing I've noticed that the pundits quoting the poll on the public option often do not provide the extra question asked which said that 71% (or 72) felt people should have a choice of the public option.

Noah Green, Boston.  Apparently you haven't been paying attention since Pres Obama has accomplished quite a bit, signed plenty of legislation including one for veteran's.  My comment was referring to how difficult it is to break the extremely divisive political barriers between the parties that have been building since the late 80's; it will take more than 10 months for both sides to resolve the animosity.

A Voice in Michigan.  Glad you found my thoughts about Afghanistan informative.

To those on the right complaining about the media being biased, I've been watching politicians for years starting with Kennedy before I could vote, I have yet to hear any president NOT complain about the media.  However, until FOX cable came along the media was journalism reflecting criticism of policies but FOX is different with Pres Obama, it attacks him personally with nonfactual, outrageous accusations to frighten people.  FOX cable always leaned right but during the Clinton years, they were not as vicious in their attacks--that's the difference I see.  FOX cable has adapted a mean, and hateful tone.  Those complaining about MSNBC's evening lineup, well, why shouldn't liberals have a channel which expresses their views.  What's good for the repubs is good for the rest of us.
