Blunt politicizes swine flu

Posted: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 3:22 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Ali Weinberg
Congressman Roy Blunt (R-MO) criticized the Obama administration's handling of the swine flu virus breakout in overtly political terms today, linking shortages of the vaccine to America's "onerous regulatory and legal environment."

“Overseas manufacturers, particularly in Europe, are creating H1N1 vaccines at a much faster rate because they don’t contend with the same inflexible regulatory environment that our domestic manufacturers face,” Blunt said in a statement released by his office. “Only now, as flu season hits, do we find out that we don’t have enough H1N1 vaccines to treat the most vulnerable Americans.”

The Washington Post reported yesterday that only about 16.5 million doses of the swine flu vaccine have become available so far. In July, the Obama administration said 80 to 120 million doses would be available by October.

“The American people expect the federal government to protect them in the face of a pandemic,” Blunt continued.  “If the current administration cannot manage what is a basic responsibility of the federal government, how can they be expected to micro-manage doctor-patient relationships? Is this what we can expect from government-run health care?”

*** UPDATE *** A Republican operative reminds First Read that Democrats have used the swine-flu vaccine as a weapon against Republicans, too.

*** UPDATE II *** Now the Missouri Democratic Party reminds us that Blunt voted AGAINST the supplemental appropriations bill providing funding for the vaccine.

A Republican would NEVER politicize H1N1, would they?
How else are you gonna get on TV ?
Criticize Obama

I'm surprised a Republican wants less regulation of vaccines

Maybe he should buy HIS vaccine on the Internet
They're MUCH LESS REGULATED
It had nothing to do with regulations, but don't let facts stop you from your campaigning Mr. Blunt. What a loser!
Guess he was pretty upset last year when there was not enough regular flu vaccine to go around too, right?
Not sure where he is visiting, but there is plenty of it in Tennessee for anyone who really needs and wants it.  Sorry blount, you are way off base on this one, just like everything else.
If you ask me, that sounds like one republican vote for the European health care model.  Next thing you know, they'll be the ones advocating single payer because President Obama's public option isn't strong enough.

Ah, never mind.  After all, maintaining consistency doesn't trouble republicans.
Mr Blunt msy forget who was in control of the White House and Congress most of the last 20 years.. He should look in the mirror
Are you kidding me? We can not blame the federal government for this.. The money was allocated and the orders were placed with multiple manufacturers very quickly. The process that we have used for years is safe and effective. I don't want Americans to get sick because we "rushed" the vaccine process.  What is it with these Republicans that just want their friends in the pharamaceutical industry to get rich faster? The "NO" party would have us eating products and using items that we had no idea where they came from.
Marcus D., Chicago
Americans, who lost a combined $1 trillion in 401k retirement plans could each lose another $10,000 in Social Security benefits as the government fails to give cost of living increases for the first time in 35 years.
VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
The COLA is a law (not presidential decision). It’s normally about 3% and the average retired person draws less than $20,000 a year thus less than $600 (not $10,000) increase.
Thus this has nothing to do with Obama or his spending.
Get facts and post responsibility.
Now that's what I call irony...

They're late!

I was just checking my watch and wondering why another 'blast' from the dopes of nope wasn't forthcoming sooner!

Guess they're too busy setting up a 'one stop criticize shop'!

And a Democrat would NEVER politicize Katrina, would they?
Clara: Is Blunt really this dumb?  Thanks for the kind words.

BTW. If Blunt wants the government to protect Americans from H1N1, Where does he stand on HCR?
Hmmm...go back to the 2004 debate between John Kerry and former President Bush.  The flu vaccine was short at the time and Kerry chimed in that because of this, President Bush was turning his back on the wellness of the country.  So, as long as the President's name is Bush, it's ok to hold him responsible for this.

Speaking of which, I have noticed gas prices have been going up.  During the Bush years, liberals said that the President was responsible for rising gas prices.  So does that mean you liberals believe that the current increase is Obama's fault?

Also, great article by Jay Cost at Real Clear Politics showing how polls can be so different on the public option based on how the question is asked:

Hmm...my memory must be going bad.

Didn't the GOP have a majority in Congress not too long ago?

Wasn't the President also a Republican at the same time?

What did they do to loosen those regulations?

Oh, that's right...NOTHING!

Take off hoser! Didnt your former Prime Minister have to leave because of a bribery scandal?

Just keep sending us your lumber, oil, Molsen Golden, snowmobiles and uranium and keep quiet. Keep watching the radar screens at the NORAD D.E.W. stations unless you love Commies like Obama does.
Change. Transparency. No more politics as usual. Yeah, some of you bought into this and we are all paying for it now.
watching msnbc all day. One of the aspects of nbc polling I dislike. No mention at all today about the fact that 25% positive gop vs 43% positive for dems; 23 % approve of gop 43% approve obama and by 46 to 38 prefer democratic vs gop congress. The numbers show once again that whatever you want to report about Obama you are ignoring how awful republican numbers continue to be.

AND-, Katrina- the HURRICANE was not politicized, but the RESPONSE was.  Big difference!  Let's try a little honesty on these boards, shall we?
In other healthcare comments, Republicans, like Blunt, criticize the Euorpean-style healthcare system as too socialist for Americans.  Which is it, Republican'ts - good when it suits your needs or bad when it suits your needs? Somebody needs to help the Republifascists bring coherence to their talking points.  Right now they are portraying themselves knee-JERK (emphasis added to jerk) reactionaries to hide their ineptitude and ignorance. Further, wasn't it the Republican chief spokesman, Rush Limbaugh who was recently encouraging every one NOT to get a H1N1 shot?  Blunt must not have gotten his statement cleared by Herr Limbaugh before he spoke.
BTW. If Blunt wants the government to protect Americans from H1N1, Where does he stand on HCR?
Ron Indiana

------------------

Your saying they are related? How? If anything HCR will further erode the countries ability of reacting to problems like H1N1.

You big government types, you sure love your government. The question is why?
Roy Blount and the rest of the Republicans have no shame and have no problem showing their ignorance.

The people of Missouri should be ashamed of this guy - the president - no matter who it is, has absolutelty no control over these things - the only thing a president can do is declare a state of emergency, which has already been done, to promote swiftness.

I know Repubs, science is the Devil!!! However, if you think that the President of the United States is a fortune teller and can properly discern what the new virus strain will be from year to year, then you are even more delusional than previously thought.

Ah, but I forgot, Ronnie Ray-Gun did employ fortune tellers in his White House - man, if only Ronnie were still here........... what dopes!
Wasn't the President also a Republican at the same time?

What did they do to loosen those regulations?

Sofa King Wee Todd Did

Nope to your first question. Those regs were loosened during the Clinton administration.

If you weren't all wee-weed up, you'd know that.
Blunt continued.  “If the current administration cannot manage what is a basic responsibility of the federal government, how can they be expected to micro-manage doctor-patient relationships? Is this what we can expect from government-run health care?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did this genius and the Dopes really forget all about Katrina? That it was HIS party in charge at the time? These people get funnier and funnier every day with their hypocrisy.
I blame you, Domenico. Why do you choose such inane comments to highlight. Are you going to start soliciting quotes from Eric Rudolph next? Maybe you should interview that guy who shoot the doctor in church. I guess what I mean to say is: stop pandering to the bigots.
MSierra Hope they get your bridge fixed soon and permenantly. In the way back I rotated thru San Diego several times on my way back and forth to the Land of Bad Memories and was able to take a trip up there. The view from a hill there(I forget the name) across the bay was one that I have carried with me for years To be able to see that view and that engineering marvel has reminded me for a long time of what constitutes the best of America and her people.I haven't been able to make it back since then but I hope that view is still there and hope it still inspires.
Ah the good ole days! To only have them back again!
Things turned nastily after 2006 when the liberal lawmakers took control as you well know.
Great point. Time to rotate the cushions.
Remember, when President Ford had the swine flu vaccine without regulations and there were thousands who became sick from the vaccine?
Congressman Blunt, why can't you remember Ford's mistake?  It should be on the front page of every newspaper what happened when there were no regulations.  Make sure to put Blunt's political party and Ford's political party with pictures.
That way the world will get to see why the Republicans have spent 9 months without writing a healthcare plan.  Their plan is to follow Ford's lack of regulation for vaccine manufacturing.
Hey Blunt...
I seem to recall a few years ago when Bush was in office we were also short on supplies, and it was February before I got my shot that year.
I have news for you Mr. Blunt, even if the Shots were in the trillions you have Doctors (Yes Republican Pediatricians that live in Lee County FL) telling my own daughter NOT to give the shots to her children.  So I would start, Mr. Blunt by calling out the Doctors in this country that are not on board with Obama on ANYTHING.
Oh please!! NO ONE had to politicize Katrina; the entire country, no, the entire world, watched in horror as Bush was vacationing at his ranch and Rice was shopping at Faragamo in NY for shoes!!
While people died in the streets.........No, no one politicized it!! It was THE downfall of BushCo; people finally admitted what an incompetent buffoon we had as president!! No, little Georgie did that all on his own!!
Heckuva job, Brownie!!
Congressman Blunt, do you remember when Bush was President and you sir said it was unsafe for Americans to get drugs and vaccines made in Canada?
Oh damn that crazy FDA and all its regulatory compliance BS.  We should just roll people up at the drive through and inject them with placebos.  What could possibly go wrong with that.  Surely no one would take advantage of someone's health for financial gain.
PS.  This loser is running for Senator of my state.  And now you know why he hasn't a snowball's chance in hell.
and here I thought Europe was this bastion of socialized medicine. Now they are a beacon of free enterprise?
C'mon righties, make up your mind.
"Just like a Democrat would NEVER politicize a hurricane." ~ Katrina
So, Katrina ... what do you call "Heckuva job, Brownie"?  And what do you call that strange whirlwind trip and appearance at night under the emergency lights with his blue shirt buttoned wrong?
Bush is the one who first tried to take political credit for Katrina.  Democrats only called his bluff by pointing out the truth.
But then, of course, the noble Bush rushed right back in to fix the problem, and now New Orleans is right back where it was before the disaster ... right?
"Market dropped over 100 points today as unemployment and foreclosures continue to climb higher under Mr. Yes We Can!"
Tax the rich- that will balance the budget! Now off to another Camp David getaway at taxpayer expense.
Last time I checked, the companies that are making the H1N1 vaccine are private corporations, so how can Blunt make the statement, "If the current administration cannot manage what is a basic responsibility of the federal government, how can they be expected to micro-manage doctor-patient relationships? Is this what we can expect from government-run health care?"  The current lack of vaccines has nothing to do with the proposed government run health care.  Most likely if the government was directly involved in the manufacturing of the vaccine, then we wouldn't have the shortage that currently exists.
Hey dumblunt...Obama didn't put those regualtions in place, you and your rightwing buddies did.
The reason there isn't production for the vaccine here is because you righties thought there should be no government assistance for low profit drugs so it got shipped overseas where people work for pennies a day. Great job bozos
Doesnt this guy remember the 70s vaccine fiasco. Better regulations and carefulness than rush to produce and administer vaccination that will prove poisonous to citizens.
I'm happier to know the vaccines are absolutely certified safe. Even the ordinary yearly flu vaccines was perenially in short supply under Bush. This hypocrisy and continuous whining is totally stunning.
Why do all of you Democrats support Obama when his team cleary goofed?
Roy Blunt, once again proving why Republicans don't need George W. Bush's help in keeping their approval ratings at all time lows.
Roy, it's worse than you think.  The jack booted thugs from their national health services bust into drug company offices and threaten executives with shipment to gulags if they don't crank out vaccine faster.
They justify it by saying,"You've got to break some eggs to make vaccine."
The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was the most vicious politicization of human suffering I've ever seen.
Blunt is wrong to politicize the vaccine issue, even though the avian flu "epidemic" was used politically against George Bush.
