HRC to Pakistan: Get real

Posted: Thursday, October 29, 2009 10:19 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC's Andrea Mitchell
Hillary Clinton, buffeted by tough questions for two days about the U.S. influence on Pakistan's military, said today she finds it hard to believe that no one in Pakistan's government knows where al Qaeda is -- and couldn't get them if they wanted to. She added that al Qaeda has had a safe haven in Pakistan for seven years.

The Secretary of State's very undiplomatic response came in a meeting with newspaper editors.

This exchange is not on camera:

Asked why other countries can't be involved in fighting terrorism -- not just Pakistan -- Clinton said: "Al-Qaeda has had safe haven in Pakistan since 2002. I find it hard to believe that nobody in your government knows where they are and couldn't get them if they really wanted to. Maybe that's the case; maybe they're not gettable. I don't know.''

But, she said, al Qaeda has launched attacks on Indonesia, Philippines and many other countries.

"So the world has an interest in seeing the capture and killing of the people who are the masterminds of this terrorist syndicate," Clinton said. "As far as we know, they are in Pakistan. I am more than willing to hear every complaint about the United States'' and "both answer, but also to change where we can, so we that we do have better communication and we have better understanding.

"But this is a two-way street. If we are going to have a mature partnership, where we work together," then "there are issues that not just the United States, but others have with your government and with your military security establishment. I don't believe in dancing around difficult issues, because I don't think that benefits anybody.

"I ask in the pursuit of mutual respect that you take seriously our concerns.''

*** UPDATE *** The State Department just announced that Clinton will be heading to Israel this weekend. Here's the release:

STATEMENT BY P.J. Crowley

Secretary Clinton's Travel to the Middle East

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Special Envoy for Middle East Peace Senator George Mitchell will hold bilateral meetings this weekend with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Mahmoud Abbas, in the region.

Senator Mitchell traveled to and is currently in the region in advance of Secretary Clinton, who already is traveling through the region.  These meetings will build on the intensive work the Administration has engaged in with both sides since the trilateral meeting last month.

As President Obama has said, the Administration is committed to comprehensive peace, including a two-state solution.  As Secretary Clinton reported to the President last week, challenges remain as we continue to work with both sides.  Her visit reflects the Administration's commitment -- and her personal commitment -- to work through the challenges we face in pursuit of comprehensive Middle East peace.

We have to keep the nukes that Pakistan has out the terrorist hands. Get'em Hillary; at least you are playing games like the Bush administration .
Seems like the green eyed monster is alive in well in Roselle with Feisty. Her Palin envy continues. Wishing she could have a book deal like Sarah Smile.

Somehow I don't see Feisty smiling alot.

What is it with you righties??? Why is HUMOR so lost on you?

You got nothing else these days… you really should try a little… it would do you good!

Really… have a cup of nice hot tea and laugh a little… it would relieve some of that pent up tension that’s got you all so worked up!

And don’t worry… I smile A LOT… especially when I read posts like yours! :0)

And lastly Bill, Fairfax...what a piece of work. You can tell he honestly believes the literal daily anti-Obama thesis he writes on first read. But they are built on such shallow concepts and facts that his 5 paragraphs can often be condensed into 5 sentences. In fact I feel sorry for someone who writes so well to believe so heavily in the false/flawed analysis from which he forms his comments.

Like I said before about our ‘friend’ Bill… reading his ‘masterpieces’ is like eating Chinese food… it’s filling but you’re hungry again an hour later!

Needless to say… I stopped reading Bill weeks ago!  He sure can write but he also can’t back up his theories with any facts!
Pakistan to Hillary Rodham Clinton

"Get real yourself. You only WORK for Obama.
As we recall, he beat you. You the second banana."
So we wasted time, treasure and American blood both in Iraq and Afghanistan because OBL and Al Qaeda are in Pakistan. Without the suppor of locals we will not be able to get him or squelch Al Qaeda. Sanctions on Pakistan are definately in order.
The more Obama puts Hillary out in public, the more she embarrasses both herself and the country. Do us all a favore Obama and fire her and appoint George Mitchell to SecOfState.
Cover your head, cover your face and close your big yap Hillary.

They don't like women telling them what to do over there.
How come George Bush was able to put together a coalition of the willing to fight the wars in Iraq and Afgahanistan, but now the US looks to be going it alone? Hillary can't even get the leaders of countries that have terrorists to fight off the terrorists in their very own country.
SOS Clinton is right. If the Bush admin. had focused on Pakistan and the area long the Afghan border, they would have come much closer to Bin Laden's lair. There is little doubt that the reason for increased violence in Pakistan is due to the American troops making inroads to ferreting out Al Qaeda and other terrorists.
We should just bring our troops home and wait to be attacked again.
The Great Pumpkin will rise out of the pumpkin patch and bring the 600,000 jobs Obama was going to create this summer along with three million new green energy jobs.

You do believe in the Great Pumpkin don't you?
Go Hillary - Go Hillary - I saw the video tape about the money and I have to tell you...it was priceless what you told them!
FR: But, she said, al Qaeda has launched attacks on Indonesia, Philippines and many other countries.

The terrorists have been emboldened, every since Obama was elected. And now Obama is giving them a billion dollars, you know, to bribe them to "change sides". Yeah, that will happen. And you know just where that money will be going. Obama is paying the terrorists way to attack us! It's almost Jimmy Carter-isque watching Obama in action.

He still needs more.

Well, at least Obie has a plan. Up until now, we didn't think he did.
Obama gave $7.5 Billion dollars to Pakistan, and like the good liberals they are, they were unhappy with it!

And we could have used that money to extend unemployment benefits.
CARTER had his faults, but he didn't start 2 'dumb' wars and almost 5,000 U.S. troops weren't killed on his watch.
GoingIt ALone:
Surely you meant Bush 41. There is no coalition because 43 isn't 41, and our allies have wised up. As we are.
National Disagrace- Pakistanis are "good liberals".. ha, and hahahaha.  You are clueless
Maybe we should ask Mccain to Fess Up, maybe even some waterboarding of Mccain would Break him, we already know he's EZ .
I like how the Fruity Redhead criticizes Bill's posts and then says "I haven't read them in weeks."

And, Red, your hate-spewing is FAR FROM humor.

So the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and other dozen countries that sent troops into Iraq in 2002 didn't happen? What did we tell the families of the men and women that were casulties in those wars, that they weren't there?
Besides the UK and US please tell me of this great coalition that Bush put together. What other country sent thousands of troops. And please supply me with the facts so that I can check them as I know from experience that Bush is a Lier.
ha, and hahahaha.
Eric

Eric - thank you for adding your insight to the conversation. Let me guess, you're a teacher?
Yes times are tough - you'll get no argument out of me but get off your a@@ knock on your neighbors doors: see if you can rake leaves, clean the gutters or something that will put a couple of $$$ in your pocket but STOP with the PITY PARTY. Feisty Redhead

Aaach! In one breath you sound like a Republican then in the next breath you extol people to sit on their heinies and wait for government subsidized health care handouts.

Which is it lass?
Get off your rear and work? or
Get off your rear and pay for your own health care? or
Open the mailbox for a check from Uncle Sucker?

Take it from Groundskeeper Willie’s enemy Seamus tellin ya first hand that lawnmowing is a high paying job, enough to cover a mortgage and raise a family!
I had high hopes for Hillary-most of them have faded.  She is being marginalized by this administration, true, but she is also not doing the job I thought she could do.  I was hoping for Jean Kirkpatrick, but got Madeline Albright.  Ah, well, more hopes dashed.

For Linus and Sally-the 600,000 jobs Obama promised would be created this summer are in the same secret location as all of Obama's other accomplishments.  You just have to believe-you deserve no facts, and heaven forfend you actually question the greatness of  our glorious leader.  He's probably a better golfer than you will ever be, after all.  And he looks so good in that empty suit.
Going It Alone:'...How come George Bush was able to put together a coalition of the willing to fight the wars in Iraq and Afgahanistan...'

Simple
Bush BRIBED the 'Coalition'.
He danlged NATO and EEU membership to the Eastern Europeans
He offered aid and trade to Latin American countries
Likewise for most of the rest

None of our traditional Western allies joined except Britain and Australia
The Iraq War was terribly unpopular among European Democracies

'Coalition of the Willing' ??
Stooges and Flunkies

Hillary should come back and negotiate between Sarah Palin and Levi Johnson
Get 'em on Jerry Springer !!
That'll fix 'er
Imagine 'First Dude' Todd Palin taking off his shirt and wrestling Levi (or his kinfolk)

Maybe Sarah could fight Levi's mother
(is she still in jail)

We could find out WHO Trig's mother REALLY IS

The 'White Trash Debutantes'

'...Dumbest President Ever...'

IS GEORGE BUSH POSTING ON FIRST READ ???

Motivate me, George !!
Just think some of you want a troop surge after 7 years of having us run around Iraq you got some nerve send Cheney and his daughter they seem to know more about torture and prisoner's or these folks than anybody.

"How come George Bush was able to put together a coalition of the willing to fight the wars in Iraq and Afgahanistan, but now the US looks to be going it alone? "

What planet have you been living on. Bush's "coalition" was a joke.
Give 'em hell, Hillary.  You don't want our money?  Don't take it.  Now that we are playing with the rest of the world, its time to get real with them, too.  We are not the world bankers and cops.
Hillary, when are you going to get tough! There are many more countries to apologize to than these, make a tour of it!
Hillary, there are more countries than these to apologize to! Maybe, you should bring Bill along to help you!
well Said Hillary Clinton..
About time someone spoke up about what the rest of us have been saying for years. Pakistan needs to be More Proactive with rooting out al Qaeda. That group is nothing but a bunch of Cowards!
Dumbest President Ever: I believe you could be the dumbest ever...Obama giving a billion dollars to Al Quaeda? You should read more. The talk of paying them is paying the Taliban-not Al Quaeda. AND this is a practice that has been going on for years over there-YES even by the Bush administration. If we had concentrated on the people who actually attacked us instead of pre-emptively invading Iraq and taking our eye off of the ball-perhaps Afghanistan would not be such an unmitigated mess. Try to get a clue.
Hillary, there are more countries than these to apologize to! Maybe, you should bring Bill along to help you!

Dumbest blogger ever: MSierra

For one irrational, name-calling, lying, pilfering and cow pattie eating comment after the other.

God bless her!
Say it and say it loud Hillary.Pakistan is a a wedge friend - one that we need to keep but one that has instable and corrupt governments and one that needs to be challenged. They need to get serious or lose their country while trying to appease the rebels.
As for friends? The first president Bush had the coalition which quickly abandoned the war. His son and Dick Cheney quickly destroyed the coalition and beat up on every friend we ever had. A few joined us for the image but not, except for the Brits with much force.

Dumbest President Ever (Sent Thursday, October 29, 2009 10:42 AM)

Who was president when the worst terrorist attack in history was carried out? Who ran congress? Who started a stupid war in Iraq? Who ignored pakistan for 7 years?
Shrillary is 'undiplomaatic' and a waste of space.  Does she really think she makes a difference?  This whole role she's playing is to stroke her ego.  Barry's put her in the back row and every now and again she pokes her hand up and says, "Hey, I'm here, remember me?"  When will she ever just 'go away'?  The bombing yesterday in Pakistan might give her another 'running from the snipers' story to fabricate.  There are three people that make me cringe when they speak and I have to turn the channel:  Shrillary, Obama and Queen Nancy.  The Three Stooges!
The only thing I have ever liked about Hillary is her statement regarding 'you don't like our money, don't take it!'  You go girl...more tough talk, less talk-around BS!!
LOL so what does John Kerry think of her remarks? She clear them with him?
I just can't believe the idiotic ramblings I read here from the right
wingers.  (Most of you can't spell, much less write).  Hillary and Obama are each just about 27-times smarter and more effective than the dumb-asses we had to tolerate the previous eight years.  The mess we're in today, both international and financial is the legacy inherited from the "shoot-em-up" administration we finally booted out.  Thank God!

To the history challenged among you - this Canadian is here to remind you that Canada refused to be bullied into Iraq, one of Chretien's finer moments. Bush held a long, sulky grudge against us until his boy toy Harper came to power. It's very difficult to support these arguments that start with a premise that is untrue.
I've noticed that no one really attacks the content of Bill, Fairfax's posts.  They just attack Bill.

And the sun came up today, too.

Rusty Follicles:

I recognize HUMOR when I see it.  If it happens here, I'll be the first one to laugh.

Note from yesterday: I think Obama birthers are fools.  Likewise for Trig birthers.  Going after a mother and her child is as unworthy as questioning the President's citizenship.  Personally, I think it's worse.

And I'm still waiting for truth and facts to prove that George Bush tried to privatize social security.

For help in that regard, I refer anyone who is interested to the state of the union address from March 4, 2005 and associated CNN.money reports about the same time regarding the content of the proposal.

Go for it.  Prove that George Bush and Republicans proposed to privatize the Social Security program and move the "trust fund" into the stock market.

What do you think, Bill, Fairfax?  Will they come back with facts (other than the usual misrepresentation and demagoguery) or will they:

1) Attack me personally
2) Attack George Bush
3) Attack Republicans
4) All of the above
By the way, Ron, Indiana:

You are one of the more reasonable folks from your side. I would like to hear your take on the so-called attempt to privatize the social security administration and the social security program.
I voted for Hillary and would hope to again.  She could buy and sell Palin any day.  Bill can make $100,000,000 in a weekend. Ronald got $8,000,000 for a book he did even bother to white.  Palin $1,500,000 is poor by book standards.
