Congress: Costs $1T, saves $104B

Posted: Friday, October 30, 2009 9:28 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

"The House Democrats' health care plan would cover 36 million more Americans at a cost of $1.055 trillion over the next decade, while slashing the federal deficit overall by $104 billion, according to a preliminary Congressional Budget Office score released late Thursday."

The New York Times: “Even so, the budget office said that the costs would be fully offset by cuts in the growth of Medicare and by new fees and taxes on individuals, families and businesses. Thus, it said, the bill would reduce projected federal budget deficits by $104 billion over 10 years.”

The GOP spin machine seems to be back up and running after a hiatus. "House Republican leaders want their members to call the 1,990-page Democratic health measure 'the Pelosi healthcare bill.'" And why not? Pelosi is an unpopular figure nationwide, as the latest NBC/WSJ poll shows that just 26% of the country views her favorably, compared with 42% who don't. (There is some disagreement, however, among GOPers. Joe "You Lie" Wilson is opting for the "Pelosi takeover.")

Rut-roh. The Washington Post reports, “House ethics investigators have been scrutinizing the activities of more than 30 lawmakers and several aides in inquiries about issues including defense lobbying and corporate influence peddling, according to a confidential House ethics committee report prepared in July. The report appears to have been inadvertently placed on a publicly accessible computer network, and it was provided to The Washington Post by a source not connected to the congressional investigations. The committee said Thursday night that the document was released by a low-level staffer.”

Costs $1T, saves $10B.

Only in Washington DC does this make any sense.
How many trillions have we spent fighting two wars and rebuilding what we blew up?  If we can find money to fight, we can find money to help our own citizens.  Keep in mind, this isn't the final version of HCR so numbers will change.
Searched through the entire "Nancy Pelsoi Tax The American People To Death Act of 2009", and nowhere does it say one word about Tort reform.
What fun it was to see Pelsoi sing the praises of her bill to her good friend and partner in crime, Charlie Rangel. How's that ethics investigation against Charlie going Nancy?
Interesting - you have straight reporting of the Democrats and their health care bill, then when you get to the Republicans, it's all about their "Spin Machine". Hopefully you'll write about Obama's Job Creation numbers in a later article, the one where they say they created or saved 650,000 jobs this year. Lets see if FR calls that the "Obama Spin Machine".

Of course not. Don't bite the hand that feeds you they say. The Trial Lawyers gave nearly $200 MILLION to the Democratic Party in 2008. No tort reform or malpractice/product liability caps is their return on investment!

According to CBO scoring that will only save the american people .5 % or 50 billion over 10 years, or by Foul Fiends (FOX) estimates

5 billion

that doesn't seem like alot does it?
Alan Grayson belongs in a rubber room and, of course, his remarks were not dissed by our radical prez. In fact, he was endorsed by Obie. Another reason to distrust our endearing egomaniac.

~~~~~
And Pelosi's lies and deception continue. The Botox Queen needs attention. She'll get it, one way or the other.
I actually wonder how she sleeps at night.
Good, it is time to clean up Washington. They were encouraged to run amok for some time and now it is time to stop it. Both parties are guilty. I wonder how many in Congress are in the pockets of big insurance and big pharmaseutical companies. Perhaps that should also be investigated. Compair contributions to how they vote. If we are going to light up Washington let's not just use a candle but a floodlight.
Read the damn bill. Where does it raise taxes? The bill will actually be neutral. Over time, if people maintain good health because they have access to good health care there will be lower costs because of a need for less medication, less visits to emergency rooms for things that could have been prevented earlier if one had seen a doctor early on. The bill states quite clearly that if you have insurance through your employer you can keep what you have. All this bill does is ensure that those currently unable to AFFORD quality health care will be given subsedized health care. This levels the playing field. Those folks will still pay premiums and co pays but at a lower rate because they have as much right to life as you or I or anyone else does.
The bill is available on the House Rules Committee Website.
The Speaker's office says it would cost $894 Billion over 10 years and be FULLY PAID FOR.
eagle1776
This is rich. If it's fully paid for, who's paying for it? You must work for the Democrats. You can spend a trillion dollars, and not have anyone pay for it, and yet it's deficit neutral. You bucking for Geitners job?
Sure, you do that. Don't raise taxes one cent, and have people just stay "healthy", healthy people don't ever get sick. We don't need those hospitals and doctors. What were we thinking when we came up with that idea to have all those doctors? An evil Republcian plan no doubt.
I saw this post yesterday and realized I am mostly wasting my time posting on MSNBC.  Most of the folks are so blinded by Party loyalty, they just can't think for themselves...eagle, even Pelosi says there are plenty of taxes in the Bill, and the CBO says there are taxes in there.  So YOU read the damn Bill.  can keep your plan if you have one...sure, if you get the choice.  Your company though can stop using that source...so i guess you CAN lose your current plan.  No real reduction on costs...because they have waved a magic wand and TOLD you that costs will be lower you believe it?  like the tooth fairy! Cut waste from Medicare to save costs?  If that was workable, why haven't they been doing it from day one of Obama's presidency? Look at all the Government programs we have now, how many are cutting waste and saving us the taxpayers money?  Do you Smoke? Insurance companies can charge you more...why?  It is a pre-existing condition, so might cancer be, or any other disease...they can charge you more, and will.  where is Affordable in that? Oh, again with the magic wand!  Because republicans and democrats for years have been demonizing themselves...they have made most of you blind to YOUR Parties failings while EVERYTHING the other side does is bad...wake the hell up!  These bills tax hearing aids, are you telling me that hearing aids are only used by Americans who are rich?  Wake up! wake up! wake Up, Americans are dumber overall politically than they have ever been.
Louisiana CoCo has it wrong when he states that Obama our "RADICAL PREZ". On the contrary, he's not RADICAL ENOUGH! Considering the economic GREAT recession AND two UNRESOLVED WARS he inherited. Unlike what Clinton left the Shrub. A SURPLUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. It makes me want to vomit everytime a hear a charlatan Republican criticism of how much debt we found ourselves. How about that Halliburtin, AIG, Bank of America and Goldman and any other Tarp money that Paulsan handed over in his whopping 9 page memorandum back in 9/09. No questions and/or debate needed. I love it when the GOP have the power and NO dissent is allowed and Obama is the villain.
My wife just saved me $900 by buying new drapes for $3,000. She probably saved 1,000 jobs in the process.
Why in the world can't you people get off the wars (we spent all this money on the BUSH wars) ( Bush did it) give it a break. My god it is OK for these nuts in office now to blow th edefict up with this bill Because BUSH SPENT MONEY get over it Obama is in office now He is your GREAT AND WONDERFUL LEADER have him pull out and stop the wars. But at last he won't do that for you will he. Instead he will allow this nutty congress and senate spend Trillions on this crap bill Yes I said TRILLIONS because if you believe for one min that they will make the cuts they have put in it you are just sheep and deserve the slaughter they are leading you to
Please just grow up this is not the 50's we need more benefits  on this bill and should ram it down the throats of the Republicans because the know even now with this much done they nedd to change their habit you know the one on lying /and were I from this Palin going rogue well thats what they call a thief in most parts of America
"..only save the american people .5 % or 50 billion over 10 years,..."
ONLY?
ONLY $50 BILLION?
$50 BILLION with a "B"!
Far more than what the gov't spent to "save" jobs at GM and Chrysler and hand a gold-plated gift to the economies of Korea and Japan, primary winners in Cash For Clunkers.
If $50 Billion is such a piffle, assuming there are 330 Million people in the US (I will even count the 12 to 17 million illegal aliens) that is about $150 per person in the US. How about checks for everybody Barack?
Excuse me...but I don't see where Nancy Pelosi is AS unpopular as John Boehner is right now.  The Right always wants to take the one they see as the Biggest Liberal in this country, and "burn them at the stake".  We lost Teddy Kennedy, Nancy....and so now....they have you.  When you annoy this many people in the country, I will say...Nancy...You must be doing something right!  Keep up the good work.
At least our side actually WORKS in Congress.  When the Repbulicans owned the Capitol, the lights stopped burning there on Thursday Afternoons.  They all went home early.
Washington is going to have to do something about that rash of  low-level staffers. Ms. Polosi was supposed to "drain the swamp" and it looks like one of the low levels found the plug. It was also one of them who tried to keep Fox News out of the press conference.
"cuts in the growth of Medicare and by new fees and taxes on individuals, families and businesses." I thought there was to be no increase in taxes to implement health care. Even if the comment on taxes want mentioned someone needs to point out that fees, when impleneted by the goverment are taxes by another name. What exacly does cuts in Medicare mean? a Cut in services available? A cut in reimbursements?
What no talk about how many jobs he created or saved?  Why is that?
