President looking for new troop options

Posted: Friday, October 30, 2009 6:45 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Chuck Todd and Jim Miklaszewski
Pres. Obama met today with the Joint Chiefs of Staff for just the second time since taking office. The president grilled the commanders on strategy and troop requests for Afghanistan during the nearly three hour meeting, but no final decision were made, according to both senior White House and Pentagon officials

In fact, the president has asked the Joint Chiefs to come back to the White House possibly as early as next week to present him with more options. The president is not happy with the choices that he has in front of him, which include Gen. Stanley McCrystal's request for approximately 40,000 more troops. So in the last few weeks, the White House asked the Pentagon to draw up more plans and when ready have the Joint Chiefs present the options formally to the president at the next meeting.

While nothing has been ruled out, the fact the president is asking for more options than what was already on the table, including the 40,000 troop request, is a strong sign that whatever number the president approves, it will likely be less than than 40,000 number. In fact, sources tell NBC News that at least one commander in the meeting today told the president there was a concern that the military was a bit stretched, something that may have had a big impact on the Commander in Chief.

As for timing, it's ALSO looking less likely the president will make a decision (let alone ANNOUNCE a decision) before he leaves for Asia on Nov. 11, a self-imposed soft deadline the White House had hoped to meet.

Jealous?  And how about disproving one FACT I stated; on Clinton's watch, I posted EXACTLY what happened!!

You all get so crazed, which I absolutely LOVE, because you know I am right, you are wrong and Bush was a disaster!!!

Again, where is bin Laden?!?!

So, disprove me; but you nut jobs just sling insults because you CANNOT disprove me!!

My degree is in something else, but it was obtained at a very liberal liberal arts college.  It was so long ago, though, that they still taught you to think for yourself.

Oh, I attended an excellent High School in San Francisco; I was inspired by one of my English teachers and pursued my degree; got problem with that?

And I think for myself, THANK YOU!! I worked on my first political campaign at eight years old, God Bless my Father and may he rest in peace; he taught my three sisters and me about getting involved!! Worked on Carter's first presidential campaign at the age of 14; I've worked hard to study and understand and your people from the right, well, I disagree with you a thousand percent!!

And when you cannot dispute a FACT from someone on the left, you insult, but NEVER, EVER can you dispute anything!!

And then you go off whining on some hate-filled or insulting rant!!

Must make you proud!!

I find it disgraceful!!
Are you sure I can't interest you in a tea bag?  You've earned one... ;0) lol lol lol

I think you do an EXCELLENT job, Feisty!! They're just jealous they can't keep up; when they do, they're usually wrong or sling insults because they are angry you're right!! LOL!!
FirstRead, you just put this thread up, so post the comments. And while you are at it, update the last one.  Get with it now.
Senator Carl Levin/Think Progress:

Reaching for an historical analogy, Levin said “If we could go back in time, don’t you think President Kennedy would tell us that he wished he would’ve taken the time for his own deliberations, rather than immediately accepting his military advisers recommendations to undertake the Bay of Pigs invasion?”

We need to get this one right. Unfortunately, I don't believe President Obama will listen to the anti-war voices. Historically, no one has ever listened to them.

Why is that? They do know what they're talking about, unlike the propaganda machines throughout our media. Is there anything to be gained all these years later by staying in Afghanistan?

I wish we as a country would weigh in on this in a mature thoughtful way. Both Democrats and Republicans. We're at a critical crossroad right now.
This is absolutely disgraceful!! Shame on President Obama; we cannot win; we must bring our troops home, and begin bringing them home now!!

Another day, another disappointment!!

DODT, Gitmo, robust public option, troops home from Iraq and now this!!

Simply appalling!!

First Read, when you put up a new thread, it is your job to post the comments you ask us to write.  Doing otherwise is very rude.
Let's face it, Obama is looking for any excuse to appease his left wing base and deny sending the troops that the field commander wants and needs.  He has made excuse after excuse and is worried about the politics of his decision.  Now is the time for the commander-in-chief to do what he is paid to do make a damn decision.  If he is not going to send additional soldiers then pull everyone out and let the Taliban have it back.  Being retired military I know decisions are sometime hard to make but you make them and follow through with your decision.
This perpetual dithering does the nation no good. Imagine if Gen. McClellan had been President rather than Abraham Lincoln. The Copperhead Peace Discussions would go on for years until the Union was only preserved by backing off the slavery issue. That's what comes from having a Chief Exec who cannot make a principled, tough decision.
I don't understand why we will not bring the troop's home. You cannot help a people if they aren't willing to help themselve's;This country is in a serious bind we are out of job's,healthcare, place's we use to call home.I know we are a rich,an STRONG country but,we have to stop somewere, we give aide all over the world an in return what do get,our own blood, sweat, tear's thrown back in our face.I know it's not easy to walk away from a promise but, that's just what some of our alien's have done.Money taxpayer's hard earn money going to people god no's what they are doing with it.And far as saving face we lost that Eight year's ago, this is not like the toy soldier's we all at onetime in our life's play with, but when we tire of them we just put them down an both sides would be alright,"BRING THEM HOME"
Where has the media been for the past 7 years on Afghanistan. No one put pressure on Bush to start acting like a war existed there and now the media is so concerned about Obama's next decision like the war started yesterday!
What a concept. Compare and constrast. Monkey boy Bush told to do whatever Cheney and the neocons told him to do in Iraq to a real debate w/ different options on the table before the commander and chief makes an angonizing decision about sending Americans into war.
Of course as soon as he figures out a way to surrender and pull the troops out and blame bush for all the worlds problems then he will have made a decision, oh and also let the Iranians build a bomb during all these endless negotiations. They have not a clue what they are doing.
I hope someone in that group understands what "winning" looks like in Afghanistan.  If we don't have a clear achievable objective over there, then we should be planning an exit strategy.  The Taliban is paying $8 a week to Afghans that join them.  Why don't we pay $20 a week to any Afghans that help us build schools, infrastructure, and defend against the Taliban?  Spend less on Military and a lot more on helping the Afghans help themselves.
I can not believe this President has only met with the JCS 2 times since becoming the Commander-in-Chief.  It is amazing that a President who came into power with two wars going on can not and has not had more meetings the JCS, what does he think they are there for?  Why hasn't he asked for more options prior to this, could it be that he is just to busy campaigning, fund raising, and trying to shove his healthcare reform down our throats?  Mr President please make a damn decision now, either give McChrystal what he wants or pull everyone out and admit defeat.  One of the most, if not the most, important job of the President is as Commander-in-Chief not chief campaigner.
First Read, congratulations, you now have three threads with a big goose egg in the comments.  why bother putting these up?  you don't do anything with them.
Is this a NUMBERS quest only? Or
is there a MISSION change possible? McChrystal is probably right on numbers for his mission...but if the total mission does a 180?
