GOP catches big break in NY-23

From NBC's Chuck Todd
As first reported by the Watertown Daily Times, the Republican nominee in the New York 23rd Congressional special election, Dede Scozzafava, announced this morning she's suspending her campaign. Her exit leaves Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman, who had garnered plenty of national GOP support, as the favorite to win what was a hotly-contested 3-way race. Republicans had feared that Hoffman and Scozzafava would split the Republican vote in this somewhat competitive district and hand the seat to Democrat Bill Owens. Former Republican Congressman John McHugh resigned his seat earlier this year after he was named by Pres. Obama to be the Secretary of the Army.

Video
: Scozzafava was under relentless attack from some members of her own party, including former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Democrats haven't held this seat since the 19th century but Obama did carry the 23rd District during the 2008 campaign. Local GOP leaders had named the more moderate Scozzafava the nominee over Hoffman as the makeup of the district led plenty of GOP strategists to believe they needed a moderate to carry the district. Hoffman decided to run as a Conservative Party candidate, something allowed in New York State, and national groups, like Club for Growth, weighed in big time.

Hoffman's rise has been thanks to a combination of conservatives and independents who apparently have been attracted by Hoffman's anti-Washington and anti-party establishment message. It's still an open question among some Republicans about whether Hoffman could have been as successful as the actual Republican nominee; running as an outsider has been a BIG benefit to his bid.

Democrats have spent over a million dollars on Owens' behalf but, of late, have been busy reminding reporters of the district's long Republican history. VP Biden is due in the district Monday in an attempt to rally the Democratic base but the math may change a tad now with Scozzafava's exit.

Good for you.  You managed to post an article without mentioning how helpful Sarah Palin's coattails are.
Is this the end of the GOP?
Here in conservative New Hampshire, a lot of Republicans voted for Obama because they felt their party had abandoned them for the religious-political extremists. Now their coup is complete.
Thank goodness, now the moderate dems need to kick the libs out of their party--no way Clinton, Johnson, Kennedy, Truman, and F. Roosevelt would agree with the extreme left of today.
America is a country in trouble. I pity American children because for the first time, the quality of life is going down and the rich 5% are getting richer. All the economic growth is fueled by debt to chinese and the arabs. Even cash for crankers was spreading the debt between the government and the car buyer.
I was in Walmart and Target and noticed that nothing is made in North America anymore. And the big worry here is about who is governor not the future of the country.
All countries with public health system (including canada have swine flu vaccinations) while USA can not make enough to even cover the most likely to get sick. At what stage do Americans decide that they are tired of being divided by the rich ( Rupert Mudorch)since as their lives deteriorates, the Mudorchs and the Waltons are laughing all the way to the bank. What significant change will occur in your life if the governor of New Jersey is a democrate or a republican.
I am truly sad for the future of this country if our thoughts are to be shaped by Fox or NBC news. We might as well close shop and hang a sign saying " destroyed country..we could think for ourselves".

Who cares? except the people of the 23rd district? Republicans are trying to frame these races as a "referendum" on President Obama. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The fall of Dede Scozzafava seems to be replay of the Republican debacle with Obama. The Republicans lost to Obama because they failed to follow even their own minimal political principles under Bush.

Clearly the Republicans still hadn't learned that lesson when they chose Dede Scozzafava.
An old adage says you get the government you deserve. Well, Watertown, if you opt for an outsider who knows next to nothing about your community and its needs, you deserve to get treated as you always have been by the Repug cronies who slapped him in there. Politics as usual! What a dumb idea! But the nation awaits your decision -- why not opt for a change? By the way, I held Republican office for ten years in my little NY town in Orange County, before moving -- I'm no outside agitator! But I did wake up -- and I hope enough of you do, too!
Why is it assumed that Hoffman will pick up
Scozzafava's voters?  They were moderate/liberals.  It's more likely they'll go for Owens.
The President, press, and most pundits have discounted or smeared the Tea Party movement and have not listened, instead the press defined us as they saw fit.  Votes are votes.  Tea Partiers are not all Reps or Dems.  We are constitution loving Americans.  We will make change at the polls.
GO GOP, GO.

THANKS DEDE --- NOW ENDORSE HOPFFMAN!
"Catch a break" Really Chuckie?  They didn't catch a break, Conservative forced her hand! Yip Yip Yahoo!
As a previous admirer of Newt Gingrich, I find it inconceivable to me that I now have a greater respect for a liberal Dede Scozzafava, than of Newt Gingrich, However I would like to thank Newt for bringing this race to national attention an contributing to what I think will be a victory for conservatism and a defeat for today's liberal republicans.
This is good to hear.  I have wondered for a long time if a third party was the answer, but increasingly I am seeing that the Republican Party can rebuild itself as the Conservative alternative it should be.  Good news in NY District 23.
Predicted this would happen. Question is, can Owens make the sale based on Hoffman's Uber conservatism? Place hasn't seen blue in over 100 years.

Hey Chuck. You can't be a pirate this Halloween now that you've had to shave the goatee. OR DID YOU SHAVE THE GOATEE? So what are you going to dress up as this year?
This is how the GOP will lose the votes of moderates and independents. Not all Republicans are die-hard ultra-conservatives and if they're willing to dirve out the official choice in favor of a hard-liner, then they'll reap what they sow.
Chuck, you're delusional if you really believe the local Republicans like outside insurgents telling them what to do.
You've given no margins for blowback - so busy are you cheering on the Right in genreral.

Your slip is showing..
The PALIN effect!!

Happy Halloween RATS!
The math will probably change depending on how much VP Biden's party SPENDS there...
If you listen real close, you can here the sound of cracking. That sound you hear is the Democrats majority crumbling away.
Bombshell of an October surprise....go Doug go
A REPUBLICAN WINNING IN NEW YORK, NO WAY NO HOW NEVER IN THIS LIFE TIME.
And in Coming Attractions:  Future Repug candidates likely to be trolls, with bad breath, living under bridges (private toll bridges, natch)!
Quitter. Maybe PALIN will endorse her now instead-birds of a feather.
Curious name for Repubs./Conservatives: Club for GROWTH!
When all they do is shrink: govt.,funding, creativity, forward-thinking, open-mindedness,
education, health care, caring period...oh I could go on and on.
Go Sara! Go!  You have more cajones than anyone out there!!  God Bless You!!!
Goodbye and good riddance to Scozzafava!  No true conservative will support gay rights and abortion on demand. She did. Scozzafava's demise is tuly an exceptionally tasty Halloween treat. May she rest in peace.
Republicans catch a break?  Really?!?!  I think any Republican that was going to Hoffman was already there.  I think he's reactionary enough to scare the other R's (it's upstate New York, not Kansas or Mississippi, after all!) that more people will gravitate to Owens than Hoffman.  Look at the newest Siena poll out this AM -- Hoffman's negatives with Sco's voters are huge -- but then again so are Owens.  It gets curioser and curiouser...
I was going to vote for Dede, but now I'll vote for Owens.  Hoffman is an outsider, and not at all concerned about issues that relate to my district.
What kind of terror tactics did the GOP used to force Scozzafava out of the race?
Think what you wish, this is the start of Tea Party politics.
So, most likely Hoffman who doesn't live in the district (right?) and knows little of local issues, is quite possibly the next Representative for NY-23?  I'm not sure if I'd call this a break for the GOP, since 1) it's been a Republican district for about 150 years and 2) he apparently thinks the GOP is too moderate or liberal.
i wouldn't be surprised to see biden suddenly have a change of heart and instead rush to jersey to rescue corzine in yet another referendum on this horrible administration.  is this really the changed you boted for america?  2012 cannot come soon enough.
Biden is going to rally the troops?!  That has to be the funniest thing I have read all week.  Biden would do less damage to Owens if he actually voted for Hoffman while he was there than if he speaks on Owen's behalf.
23 skadoo to the liberal Republican.  What was the Party thinking putting a mirror image Democrat up for election.  The voters had little to choose between the two.  Could this be a forecast for Sarah.  A third party is necessary unless the Republicans get smart.
Wow... I wonder how much pressure she was under to cede the seat rather than splitting the vote. It's a shame that we don't get to see the preview of the disintigration of the Republican Party in 2012.

The further the Republican's drive to the right, the more alienated the moderates of both parties will become. Perhaps this is the time for a new centrist party?
Is nominating someone that doesn't live in the district, isn't familiar with the district, and isn't fluent in the issues of the district really a win?

I guess he's more "republican" than Scozzafava - he asked to receive the questions in advance so he could formulate answers - now that's republican!

This may be a win in ny-23, but elsewhere in the country, purging reasonable candidates for know-nothing wingnut carpetbaggers isn't exactly a winning strategy.  But hey, desperation leads to strange occurances.
Behold the Power of Palin
A win by Hoffman will just confirm that the far right has taken over The Republican Party.  This district lends itself to Conservatism, but not the Radical Conservative of Hoffman.  I do not believe the vast majority of the voters know how far right Hoffman is. People like Hoffman are a danger to our basic freedoms.
Why doesn't Obama go there and show his support. Maybe it will help. Biden isn't going to help. Or is it a lost cause and he doesn't want to take a chance of turning this into a vote on Obama?
Now watch.  Even though a democrat hasn't held that office since the 19th century, it will be lauded as some huge victory for the Republicans. "See, we are coming to get you liberals!"  That's like saying a NHL team is pitted against a junior hockey team and then the NHL team saying, "What a great victory for us!"
Scozzafava has to have been threatened.  AND, I see this as a requiem for the GOP.  The conservatives are off their leash.  Here come Dick and Sarah.
Hoffman is a jerk who can't put two words together to make a sentence.  He is so out of touch with Americans, shame on him.
I love all the hype about outside money, big outside names and their feeble endorsements, and now the massive predictions about the outcome of this "local PR inside" race that has national attention ...

The best part: reading all the opinions about people who are smart yet don't know squat about the local stuff in Upstate NY.

You guys never pick up on the meat of this story: (1) OWENS is not even a DEM (can't be one until after the election, legally) ... (2) HOFFMAN doesn't even live in the district ... those two things should matter, but the media with their standard and narrow focus, just can't bring themselves to cover that, can they?

They are too busy on more newsworthy stuff like Palin or Newt or Fred or even his "I'm not a trophy wife, Jeri" right? LOL LOL

Pathetic, really.
The Republicans "catch a big break" because the Republican Party choice drops out of the race?  Odd logic.  I guess the abnormal is normal among the Villagers.
The Republican drops out and Todd spins it as a Republicans catching a break. The real story here is that the GOP is splintering in a turf war beteen moderates and radicals and the radicals seem to be winning. That may be news, but I don't think it's good news for Republicans.
The problem for the GOP is that they rely on "GOP strategists", instead of their base. GOP strategists are no longer relevant. The people are in charge, now.
Wouldn't it be amazing if the citizens of NY23 voted for their choice, rather than listening to all the political operatives telling them how to vote?

It would make Tuesday evening very interesting...
Go Hoffman!!
I'm not sure this is any kind of break for the Republicans.  This means that the far right base is pulling the party ever farther right with success.  This might be a success in the NY-23 but this means there will ultimately be no part of the party that is not far right.  There are only a few regions in the U.S. where that will be an advantage for Republicans.
Just one of many defeats in line for Democrats given Obama's utter failure at doing anything to reverse the recession, constant indecision regarding Afghanistan, and continual government takeover of private industry.
