Boehner, Skelton want more on Afghan.

From NBC's Luke Russert
After the White House acknowledged the re-election of Afghan President Hamid Karzai today, both Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Ike Skelton (D-MO) released statements supporting Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s plan for a counter insurgency strategy within Afghanistan.

Boehner said, “In March, the President outlined a counter-insurgency strategy, and I support that strategy. It’s time to do what is necessary to make that strategy work. There are no more excuses. It’s time for the Obama Administration to give our commander on the ground the resources he needs to protect our troops and achieve the goals the President has said he supports.”

Skelton, one of the most powerful and important Democrats on the Hill when it comes to war policy echoed Boehner’s words, “I continue to believe that General McChrystal’s counter insurgency plan is the right approach, including his call to build capability at the local level.”

Skelton continued, “The recent flawed election process has reinforced the need to also push for the reform of the national Afghan government, to increase legitimacy and help build a capable partner for our efforts in Afghanistan. Pursuing al Qaeda and ensuring that its members can’t use Afghanistan as a safe haven is a vital national security interest for the U.S., and a minimally functioning and legitimate Afghan government is an important part of that effort.”

Republicans continue to see the war in Afghanistan as an issue they can use to their advantage politically. Many Republicans believe that each day that Obama does not announce a clear, comprehensive war strategy is a day in which they have won the spin war on the issue.

Skelton’s urging of the president to adopt McChrystal’s policy shows a continuing rift within the Democratic Party between hawkish Democrats who support McChrystal and a troop increase, and the more dovish progressives who are reluctant to support a war that they see as one with no end in sight. Privately, many Democrats say the divide is of great concern because of its ability to split the party into two emotionally driven, ideologically different camps.

All eyes will be on the White House in the coming weeks, as officials continue to decide what the best course of action is for the country and soldiers overseas.

Here you go Barack, solve two problems at once-

There are over 15 MILLION unemployed in the US today. Let's assume only 1/3 of them will meet the health and age requirements for the military.

Draft the unemployed. You have 5 MILLION new troops, now all employed with government paid healthcare, clothing and food. Send 2 million to Iraq, 2 million to Afghanistan and spread the other million around in a Big Stick diplomacy show of force to other hot spots and vest pocket wars.

The way you are running things now, less than half will come back alive, but you may win the wars.

You have then kept your promises Barack- creating over 3 million jobs, and ending US involvement in mideast wars.

See? Obama is a uniter! Obama has united the Democrats and Republicans in the House against him. Even the Democrats that care about the country are tiring of Obama's antics and dithering.
What a difference a year makes. Last year, Obama was using the war against the Republicans. Now the Republicans are using the war against Obama. And as expected, Obama is voting 'Present'. You can't do that Barack, you have to decide.
It’s time to do what is necessary to make that strategy work. There are no more excuses. It’s time for the Obama Administration to give our commander on the ground the resources he needs to protect our troops and achieve the goals the President has said he supports.”

No Bonehead, its time to Rethink Afghanistan and get the hell out there. that is one promise my President doesn't need to fulfill. The Afghanistan country is corrupt and graves are there from 2000 years. Why should we waste our lives and money.

Big Al in Chi town I thought you died of syphilis. Maybe you go to Stroger Hospital to get your brain treated since syphilis has eaten you brain; if you have one left.
"There are no more excuses," says Boehner!! Well I agree with the TAN MAN!! There are no more excuses; President Obama stated he wanted to wait until after the run-off to make a decision; there will be no run-off so now President Obama must bring our troops home!!

There is no winning in Afghanistan; we are policing a country!!

Obama must stand tall and do as he promised and do right by our military; if he sends as much as ONE troop to Afghanistan, this DOES become his war; he doesn't want that, yet he refuses to bring the troops home!! He can't have it both ways; it's either his war, which will cost him dearly with the base of his Party, or he does the right thing and brings our men and women home!!

NO MORE EXCUSES!!
McChrystal must be getting fed up with Obama. Who could blame him? Resign General, write a book, relax a little. Anything has to be better then working for the buffoon you currently work for.
It's almost time to get the popcorn and watch the game of ideological "musical chairs" to be played by the two parties, their media mouthpieces and their followers as troop level increases in the 10's of thousands are certain to be proposed by the administration. Suddenly all of the members of the party of no will be on the side of "yes we can", and the president's party will be saying "no you  don't"
It will be fun to see that play out here and elsewhere...
Let's not forget that this is the very same General McCrystal that knew Pat Tillman died from friendly fire and signed off on a Silver Star anyway. His excuse was that he didn't read the authorization that he signed. The truth is that he deliberately lied about it to provide cover for Bush/Cheney. Do we really want to listen this liar?
FR: "Republicans continue to see the war in Afghanistan as an issue they can use to their advantage politically. Many Republicans believe that each day that Obama does not announce a clear, comprehensive war strategy is a day in which they have won the spin war on the issue. "

Little cynical, aren't we? Every day that goes by, Obama keeps our men sand women in harms way. McCrystal has done his job, he has told Obama what is needed to implement the very policy Obama came up with last March. And now it's the moment of truth, and Obama flinches. He doesn't have the back-bone for doing these things, so he dithers, hoping something will happen where he won't have to make the difficult call, the difficult choice. Rush is right, Obama nothing but a man child.

I'm glad you're entertained by war. But remember that those boxes being unloaded at Dover AFB aren't props. They are the real deal.

Enjoy your popcorn.
This is the same John Boehner that helped the pedophile Mark Foley(R) prey on teenage Congressional Pages.
Funny how all of the negative comments here are directed toward Boehner but not Skelton, even though they said the same thing...
Truth Hurts ~ Probably not.  But I'm still not convinced that this is exactly what they were covering up.  I've heard other accounts of it that are  worse.  In which case, your point is even more well taken.
The President has more information than any one or two members of Congress, media outlet, or individual citizen. I suggest we let him deliberate and make a good decision. Now that we know we will continue to deal with Karzai it will make things clearer and he should have a decision shortly.

Knee jerk cowboy diplomacy is over.
Draft The Unemployed- problem solved. (Sent Monday, November 02, 2009 2:22 PM)

Who in Congress is going to sponsor the your military draft bill?  Your Representative and Senators?

Diogenes laments, as I am sure all decent people do, the inevitable loss of life engendered by the conflicts extant. The comment is about the political machinations engendered by the current situation.
Our brave troops and their loved ones have been sacrificing themselves on the altar of patriotism for almost a decade now, and Diogenes does not take that sacrifice lightly.
Nineteenth-century military theorist Karl von Clausewitz wrote that war is an extension of politics, but by other means. ...
How about we draft some of the wingnuts that post here, the government doesn't care if your under-educated,you would be good foot fighters. But we all know the republicans don't send off there little darlings to war, they wouldn't have any of that.Maybe we could draft a few wingers since they have all the answers on war.Our country would only need a hand full of these experts. And since there aren't to many people that listen to Boehner.the guy is all blow, and NO show, and his face looks brighter then the sun.
President Obama: please get out now. Let's take our helicopters and go home!
Afghanistan is another Vietnam, will we never learn, limited warfare never has worked and never will, there will be no "victory" in Afghanistan today or 10 years from now, just a constant stream of dead kids coming home and a larger national debt, sorry people it is just a miserable losers game and I can not believe our government is stupid enough to play, again.
all neocons - send your babies to war
Watched Bill Moyers Friday night.  His final comment addressed the draft, basically asking the question of how many congressmen would be so quick to demand more troops be sent to Iraq IF they had to vote for a draft in order to do it.  My guess is none.

It is easy to be armchair quarterbacks like Boehner and Skelton, much harder to be the one who is responsible to make the decision and responsible for the consequences of it.  Afghanistan is NOT like Iraq, a surge may stabilize the few cities but the terrain is brutal and battle scarred, the remote villages tribal, it is uneducated, and economically deprieved.  The Afghan people have been living in war for about 30 years, the US abandoned them when the Soviets left and you could say again in 2002 when Iraq became our priority.  They do not trust us and it is probable that many of them want us to leave--they're tired of fighting.  I can have an opinion about leaving or staying but I do not pretend to know what intelligence information Pres Obama has that impacts the decision or the wisdom to find a solution.  Prayers for President Obama to make the right choice to keep our military troops safe as well as the country.
But we all know the republicans don't send off there little darlings to war, they wouldn't have any of that.
