Election day: What does it mean?

The Wall Street Journal: ”Republicans appear positioned for strong results in three hard-fought elections Tuesday. But isolated, off-year contests aren't always reliable indicators of what will happen in the wider federal and state races held in even-numbered years.”

More: “Democrats and Republicans are jostling to glean messages from voters in a race for a U.S. House seat in far northern New York, as well as from contests for governor in New Jersey and Virginia. Republicans, increasingly optimistic, say the contests foreshadow trouble for President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party's ambitious agenda heading toward the 2010 congressional elections.”

The Wall Street Journal also takes a final look at the oft-scrutinized “intensity factor” that is seen as a determining factor in the outcome of today’s gubernatorial and special elections. For New Jersey, the Journal writes. “It's entirely possible that the intensity meter in this governor's race will show there simply isn't much on either side. An ugly campaign appears to have made each major candidate less appealing.” Virginia’s “race is where an intensity gap seems most likely, and most beneficial to Republicans. And in New York’s 23rd district, “the question … is whether national Republican leaders have managed to create more intensity on their side -- or, perversely, have managed to generate it for the Democratic underdog” by throwing their support behind the third-party Conservative candidate. “Watch what kind of intensity -- if any -- now emerges among moderate Republicans.”

USA Today: “Elections in a handful of states today, including governors' races in New Jersey and Virginia, loom as the first significant electoral test of the coalition that swept President Obama and congressional Democrats to victory one year ago. This time, Democrats are braced for a tough night: Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds trailed Republican Bob McDonnell by double digits in late statewide polls. In New Jersey, Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine was neck-and-neck with GOP challenger Chris Christie.”

The New York Times’ Nagourney writes, “Some Democrats said they are concerned that an early surge of support for a third-party candidate, Christopher J. Daggett, which appeared to come at the expense of Mr. Christie, is now fading as anti-Corzine voters settle on Mr. Christie. Polls close at 8 p.m., and if the race turns out to be as close with as polls suggest, this could be yet another close American election with no conclusion by the time everyone goes to sleep.”

What does it mean? It means that it's over for the liberal Democrats, even before it was started.
Can't we just fire EVERYONE in Congress and start over????
Dee Dee is a dodo.

All evidence ot the contrary.

Poll numbers show that in spite of McDonnell's President Obama remains popular.

Besides, there is only 1 race for any national offices today and it's NY-23...a seat that Democrats haven't held since 1871...yeah, that'll really be a referendum on the President's policies!
Nothing except these States will have to still come through Congress one day and this would be easier if Democratic folk's one but if not the DEms are taking names but it won't affect the White HOuse for he was suppose to support the party not like wary Senator's.
You poor liberals on here like 'Pete-Albany, NY' you'll never get it, will you? You can spin it anyway you want but the fact of the matter is- America is starting to wake up! Remember- it took a Carter to get a Reagan.  LOL

The fact that the media has begun downplaying these elections as "not necessarily indicative" of anything bodes well for the GOP. I recall the media braying that the Reagan landslides were "not a mandate", while the closer Obama victory over McCain was a "clear mandate".  I also seem to recall msnbc and other media outlets  complaining about "one party rule" when the GOP had the white house and the congress, while that danger does not seem to bother the media now that  we have juvenile  college-dorm potheads running the government.

ELECTION DAY: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

It means....He who spends most....

Wins...
Democrats should be careful. I really want the moderate wing of the republican party to form their own political party. Let the nutcases have the Republican party.
I have made up my mind that I will always vote a straight Democrate ticket no matter how bad a candidate there is running or how good a GOP candidate is running because I am so appalled at how Reps have acted this year on every issue.  They stink and I hope that Dems are victorious in the future.

And it took a Bush to get a Clinton, and another Bush to get an Obama. LOL  The liberals just keep getting better and better.

Greg Remington: I am an Independent as well.  I, like MANY Independents who voted for Obama (I'm not one) do not want even more control of our lives AKA- Socialism.  Most of the Independents who voted DEM last election cycle were VERY misinformed. By the way- I will be thinking of your post tonight- when the results come in. We will see if you are right about Dist. 23.  There's a very small chance you're right about New Jersey but not on Dist. 23. Even if DEMS score a win in New Jersey- it will be a very small one and it will still look good for Repubs.  Good luck on your liberal predictions though.
It means that Obama has no coat tails to speak of, it means that democrat inane thinking would be coming to a halt and it means that we the majority of Americans will be well on the way of taking our country back.
I don't vote for Democrats, I vote against Republicans.  Because, quite frankly, Republicans scare the $#!t out of me.

Republicans: America's Taliban.

It MEANS: this is our system-POLITICAL system. Governance is another thing.
NJ: It means, if Corzine loses, he's already left too much of a footprint-he didn't just get here with an inherited mess, but he's in the bigger inherited mess;
NY: It means it hasn't been Dem. since the Civil War-big shocker. ( Is DEDE still technically on the ballot? If so I think they should stay Republican and vote for her anyway and tell the ENTOURAGE of the currently UNELECTED to mind their own damn business-or vote for the Dem. So there!)
In any event, if Hoffman (C) wins? Here's the Dem. spin:
REPUBLICANS LOSE DISTRICT HELD SINCE CIVIL WAR!
VA: It means the Repub. candidate didn't suck as bad.
(Any woman who votes for the Repub. is nuts.)
And it ALL means: NONE OF THEM are OBAMA! But all three states and district voted for him. He is a phenom and unique.
It means: NY,NJ and VA had elections today.
The #1 statement from this election, regardless of winners, is the extreme far-right stance of the Republican Party...so far right & scary that real Republicans leave & promote Democrats in NY.The ugly leadership is disgusting...and I was a Republican for 35 years. No more....Limbaugh, Palin,Beck, Hannity, Boehner, Buchanan, etc, are not true Republicans, but American Taliban extremists.
It means if we get the same old, its politics as usual.....Again third party now.....What better time than now......We could be the party for all americans, instead of the party of no or ambasadorships for dem along with continuation of investagation going no where...............Washington best.........
"Democrats should be careful. I really want the moderate wing of the republican party to form their own political party. Let the nutcases have the Republican party."

It's not just the Democrats who need to be careful; it's the voters. They've been hoodwinked before, and now it looks like they're letting tv and radio celebrities hoodwink them again.

I'm independent, no affiliation to any of the parties. But if I had to choose a party today, I'd call myself a Lincoln Democrat.  Lincoln wouldn't have a place in today's Republican party.  It's a shame, too.
