Landrieu seems to back a trigger

From NBC's Ken Strickland
As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid remains shy of the 60 votes he needs to bring his health-care bill to the floor, one of the senators withholding her support appears to be moving away from Reid's bill that contains a public option -- and leaning instead toward the "trigger" proposal offered by Republican Olympia Snowe.

"I remain skeptical about what's been outlined conceptually," Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) said today, referring to Reid proposal for a public option that would allow states to opt out. "I continue to want to push forward to give people in American much better choices than they have today and will continue to stay at the table and negotiate."

Landrieu said she agrees with Snowe's belief that the private market should be allowed the chance to reform itself by providing affordable insurance coverage. But she quickly added, "If the private market fails to reform or refuses to reform then there would be a fallback position."

That "fallback position" is a direct reference to Snowe's proposal -- often called  a "fallback" or "trigger."

"If we can achieve [affordable insurance coverage] through private sector reform, that's wonderful," she said. "And if not, then there should be a mechanism that basically -- I guess -- guarantees it, which would be a well-crafted trigger that is triggered not just by political whim or wish, which is what the current version in my view does, but by affordability and availability of choice."

Snowe's trigger seemed to be losing momentum in the Senate last week. Reid said the none of the health-care elements he sent to the Congressional Budget Office for cost estimates included the trigger option. But Landrieu strongly suggested the Snowe proposal is not dead. "Well, let me just say right now, I wouldn't count it out," she said, "I would not count it out."

If they go the trigger route, it should be a permanent trigger based on percentage.  Ala safety valve
Hey Landrieu----Please explain to us all exactly what makes you think the insurance companies are going to just magically transform themselves????

Haven't they already been given that chance for, oh I don't know, THE LAST 20 YEARS???!!!!

Get a FLIPPING CLUE LADY.

Geez.
The trigger is a bigger joke then the public option, and that's saying something.
Landrieu and all you so-called Democrats are sellouts when they have the audacity to say let the private market reform itself. Yeah like lets have the fox continue to guard the hen house. You madam and the crooks I mean career politicians are the problem. I guess you do NOT have to worry about whether or not your insurance company will deny your claim AS WE TAX PAYORS TAKE CARE OF THAT FOR YOU. Trigger this lady!
"I remain skeptical about what's been outlined conceptually,"
-----------------------------------------------------

Well Well Well-
Congress exempts themselves from HCR, it is not good enough for them but it is good enough for the peons.

Now even the ignorant masses question the value and motive. Danger! Danger!

Trouble in Socialist Paradise lefties?

Just talk to Castro or Chavez. Leftist giveaways tend to consume themselves like a black hole.
Sen Landrieu, since when have the private sector ever reformed itself willingly and fairly? NEVER, that's when. The insurance companies like their low risks, the ability to say "denied" and they love their huge profits they rake in on the blood, sweat and tears of hardworking Americans.

Trigger this, Ms. Landrieu, your constituents could benefit immensely by the HCR bill. Lieberman is in Aetna's deep pockets and we understand his mindset; what's your excuse?
Landrieu can't get out of the way of socialized health care fast enough. Her phone/fax/e-mails are running 10-1 against the government takeover of health care.
Mary Landrieu. Hot? Not hot?
Landrieu said she agrees with Snowe's belief that the private market should be allowed the chance to reform itself by providing affordable insurance coverage.

Why doesn't this lady from the south just say I belive we should continue to accept campaign contributions from the healtcare industry and forget people who remain sick or die quickly because that would help reduce the cost.
Health Care Reform - Children shouldn't play with dead things.
The health care reform bill reminds people of the movie Weekend at Bernies. You have a pair of losers (Pelsoi and Reid) pretending that their bill is alive and well, when in fact, it's dead. But that doesn't stop Nancy and Harry from propping it up and telling everyone how healthy it looks.
Why does everything the Democrats do separate taxpayers money from their wallets and send it to the government?
If they gives us a mandate without a ROBUST public option, and forcing the costs down, it is nothing more than than the continuing of Class War that started with Reagan and all through GWB - this will not be acceptable. There will be outrage and the Tea Baggers will look like pansies, relatively speaking.
The trigger option is the only plan that has any chance of passing. I'm okay with the trigger option as long as we can prolong this so called trigger to a point where Republicans regain power and can shoot this down. Creating free market competition is the only solution. And no, goverment services are not competiton.
Oh, Mary. Now you too are on the Official White House Enemies List.

Dissolving the very foundations of Baracks socialist glory of Americas Perfect Tomorrow?  All hail the great leader Obama.

Obstructionists will be sent to the re-education camps- run by former Chicago Public School managers like Arne Duncan.

If that won't work then ask them to look in that ditch over there while they get a Kalashnikov Colonoscopy. It worked for Pol Pot.

P Johnson, Virgina Wrote: You wanted to solve all the problems, because you had all the answers during the campaign. Now, a year later, you haven't solved a damn thing! The only thing you can do is point at the minority party and say "Hey, they don't have plan either". You have your candidates run on that platform next, see where that gets you.
P.Johnson, Virginia (Sent Tuesday, November 03, 2009 9:58 AM)

I'm confused. Are you agreeing that the minority party doesn't have a plan? I told you so.

Were you asleep when the Dems passed the Ledbetter Act giving equal pay to women for doing the same job as men? Were you in a trance when the minimum wage was increased for the first time in 25 yrs? Perhaps you will be alert when HCR passes in this country.

Those are just a few of the "damn things" that this administration has done in the brief time they've been in office. Stay tuned; there's more to come!
No, really, health care will be free. So who you going to believe, me, or those lying Republicans?
Landrieu said she agrees with Snowe's belief that the private market should be allowed the chance to reform itself by providing affordable insurance coverage.

And why doesn't Obama just say that he will do nothing to Big Pharma due the their campaign contributions to Obama and other Democrats. I'm amazed that Dems don't say a word about Obama cutting a back room deal with Big Pharma that will allow them to reap extreme profit margins and does nothing to reduce cost of prescription drugs.
"Landrieu said she agrees with Snowe's belief that the private market should be allowed the chance to reform itself by providing affordable insurance coverage."

What's this idiot smoking?? Southern democrats have always been more conservative, but this lady is just stupid!! And 60 votes are needed to avoid a filibuster; however, 60 votes are not needed to pass a HCR bill with a public option!! The Bill could pass with a simple majority; we no longer have President Dumbya to veto anything that may actually be good for the American people!! We have a president who would sign it!! We also have Vice-President Biden, if a tie-breaker for is needed!!

So get going democrats!!

I understand the need for all the prima dona senators to strut their egos.  At some point, however, Reid needs to lay down the law to all sides.

Any Democrat supporting a filibuster should immediately be stripped of all chairmanships and seniority.  If Lieberman or Landrieu or Nelson or anyone else wants to change parties, so be it.  Surely they would be happier as the junior members of the  minority party.

Any senator wanting to filibuster should have to stand there and talk, not simply invoke the procedure, with no breaks for any reason, holidays, whatever, 24/7, live on C-SPAN.  Let the American people see these  *statesmen* in action.  After all, closing down the government really worked so well for the Republicans when Clinton was President.

Once the health care issue is resolved, Reid should then continue to keep them in session 24/7 until all the holds on  various nominees and other issues are concluded and they have brought all the business of the Senate up to date.  Thereafter, on the last business day of each month, Reid should keep them in session until they bring all the previous month's business up to date.
I was going to go over to Fox and Friends to view some cleavage, when I realized....I'M AFRAID OF IT!
I am so disgusted with Mary Landrieu.  Every time I call any of her 5 office phone numbers, they are always busy.  I will never vote for her again !!
Jim Jurnak, Chandler, Arizona: I understand the need for all the prima dona senators to strut their egos.  At some point, however, Reid needs to lay down the law to all sides.

Really? What law would that be?  Strip the Senators of their positions? Sure, go ahead. They'll make great Republicans the day after that happens and they switch sides.

Tax Union Guy (Sent Tuesday, November 03, 2009 12:20 PM)

I'd rather have my taxpayer money going to the government to be spent for something that actually benefits the American people, as opposed to the Administration of President Dumbya, who spent it on illegal wars!!

..forget people who remain sick or die quickly because that would help reduce the cost.

One year. And you got Ledbetter and minimum wage. That's it? Gitmo? Still there. Iraq? Still there. Afghainistan? Still there. Unemployment? Over 10% by now. Jobs? 3 million lost.

Quite the record the Democrats have. Oh, and you've got that Beer Summit. Can't leave that one out.
There is no free lunch, and a public option doesn't magically reduce the costs insurance companies -- whether government sponsored or private -- are billed by health care providers.

At best, the only way a public option can offer premiums at significantly lower cost than private insurers is either by mandating below market Medicare-type rates or by negotiating lower rates directly with providers.

n either case, any cost shortfalls experienced by the providers will merely be shifted to private insurers thereby increasing health insurance premiums for the rest of us.  Which is pretty much what happens with Medicare now.

Trigger or not, the public option is a fraud.

That's not quite right.  The law fixed a problem with the existing law expanding and redefining the statute of limitations one could sue for equal pay violations.  The old statute was flawed and the law corrected a flaw.  It did not mandate equal pay.

Wow! More Bush complaints. You libs need to get a clue that I don't think you'll find that 80% of conservatives agree with you that the Bush presidency was a failure. Bush was as liberal as any Democrat with the way he spent money. If we hated this about Bush, why wouldn't we hate more of the same and then some about Obama. So, it really doesn't make sense that every time we conservatives voice our disapproval with Obama to bring up the Bush presidency. He did some good things like the evil tax cuts you mention. My middle class family benefited from this as I'm sure you did too. Once these tax cuts expire, I will have to pay thousands more in income tax. I'm sure you are cool with paying more and getting nothing in return. I also agreed with the premise of the Iraq and Afghanistan war. But the execution of the war was horrible.

You guys are starting to look silly that you can't debate issues of our time. You just fall back on your argument that Obama might not be great, but he's better than Bush.
Racial Outrage: All Active Ethics Probes Focus on Black Lawmakers
The House ethics committee is currently investigating seven African-American lawmakers — more than 15 percent of the total in the House. And an eighth black member, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), would be under investigation if the Justice Department hadn’t asked the committee to stand down.

Not a single white lawmaker is currently the subject of a full-scale ethics committee probe.

The ethics committee declined to respond to questions about the racial disparity, and members of the Congressional Black Caucus are wary of talking about it on the record. But privately, some black members are outraged — and see in the numbers a worrisome trend in the actions of ethics watchdogs on and off Capitol Hill.

“Is there concern whether someone is trying to set up [Congressional Black Caucus] members? Yeah, there is,” a black House Democrat said. “It looks as if there is somebody out there who understands what the rules [are] and sends names to the ethics committee with the goal of going after the [CBC].”

WHY IS THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TARGETING BLACKS ONLY FOR ETHICS PROBES!!!!!

If Bush had done this all the news outlets would be screaming - and yet they dont even mention it when its Obama trying to destroy the Black Members.  Only One news outlet is covering this story so far - You guessed it - FOX

Of course President Obama inherited a disaster from Dumbya; however, Obama has not accomplished much, if anything, of what he promised over and over and over again during the primaries and the general election!! His democratic base enabled him to get the nomination; he better start listening; he's not!! He's sitting around waiting and waiting and waiting, for what??

"President Obama made more than 500 promises to our nation."  Exactly how many has he kept?  The answers we get are they're "in the works" - some have been broken, like barring paid lobbyists from serving as administration officials!!

And many of these promises could have, and should have, been kept within his first 100 days, i.e. DODO!!

Quite frankly, he's looking more and more like another corporate president!!

RE: Your tenure

Hello, Joe,

You know, we didn't really understand Al Gore's selection of you as VP candidate in 2000 other than to placate the Jewish vote. Personally, I think you had a hand in losing that election.

You left the Democrat Party in 2006. Okay, that was a slap in the face but we understood that it was a politically expedient move.

You backed John McCain for President in 2008. Well, that was pushing the envelope. You really expect to maintain respect in the Democratic Party after that? But we forgave you. You caucus with us and John McCain is the least insane member of the Republicans. We respect him. Okay, you can keep your chairmanship on the Domestic Security Council.

2009. You threaten to filibuster health care reform after several failed attempts. You object to the public option. You want to kill the bill before it ever reaches the floor? You think maybe Lincoln and Nelson or Bayh will join you in this folly? Are you nuts? You think you will get yet another pass for this?

You will not. You should declare yourself a Republican now. Join the 'Party of NO' Get out of town. You have used up your political capital and you must now face the consequences that Judas faced. Because that is what you are: a Benedict Arnold, a turncoat. We are done with you, sir.
I actualy LIKE the trigger option as it is the ONLY version that can pass through the Senate, and all of this will take place if the Catholic Church stays out of politics and begins to worry about the millions of poor and uninsured.
Does anyone remember what the scorecard was when Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid passed?  I do not think so!!!!

No. But we all pay through the snoot for it now.

Medicaid, Medicare, Prescription Benefits and Socialist Security represent THE biggest chunk of gov't spending. Not the Pentagon as the lefties like to scream.
Wars come and go. Viet Nam is long over but we are still paying for LBJ's Great Society poverty programs and poverty continues to rise 40 years later.

Really?  President Jimmy Carter was successful in brokering the first peace treaty between an Arab nation and Israel, Egypt, which has worked out quite well!!

George W. Bush left office with an approval rating of 22%; Jimmy Carter left office with a low approval rating also, 34%; however, much of Carter's problems stemmed from the Iranian Hostage Crisis and the 1979 energy crisis!!

Even the crook, Nixon, left office with a higher approval rating than Dumbya; his was 24%!!

You were saying??
