ME: Same-sex marriage repealed

Posted: Wednesday, November 04, 2009 9:18 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

"Maine voters overturned the state’s same-sex marriage law yesterday, delivering a potentially crushing blow to gay-rights advocates after a year when their cause seemed to be gaining momentum with legislative and legal victories in four states. As the ballot counting continued well past midnight, the margin continued to grow -- with 52.7 percent of voters in favor of the repeal -- and the Associated Press called the contest in favor of gay-marriage foes shortly before 1 a.m. The 'people’s veto' came six months after Maine’s law was approved, and one year after California voters rejected gay marriage by a similar margin."

Sad...:(
This result just shows that the electorate isn't quite ready yet. However, the demographics are in favor for gay marriage in due time. Also, this is an off-year election year, which means it tends to skew older and more consevartive.

In NJ, not a surpruse. In this economica and political climate ANY incumbent governor would have had great difficulty getting re-elected.
Happens every time. Let the people vote, and they do the right thing.
One of the most liberal states in the Union, and GM gets turned away, again, just like in every other state where it goes to a vote. Voters matter, and that was proven once again, this time in Maine.
Left to voters, the only voters would still be white land-owning males...
Josh Engel: yes, just as the Germans elected Adolf Hitler...
Diogenes (sent Wed. 9:38am) i agree with you. Also if left to the maj. of voters- women would still not be allowed to vote,Afro-Americans would still be seg. & gays would still be with their mouth shut in closet. "as u can see Gay People are not in closet, they are fighting & not losin by much, And in final analysis they WILL WIN.
Left to voters, the only voters would still be white land-owning males...

Diogenes I am sorry but just cause you dont believe in Gay Marrage does not make you a raciest.

Some beieve that Marrage is between a man and a woman.
Barney Frank demands a recount.

George Soros promised ACORN would stuff those ballots until they were bursting!
HOW DARE THEY TAKE AWAY MARRIAGE EQUALITY! THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS TRAVESTY SHOULD BE LOCKED UP FOR HATE CRIMES!
How dare american voters disagree with the far left.

How Dare They!

I personally dont care either way - but votes in this country do count - at least until Obama "Changes" that.

Looks like the "Dopes of Hope" are let down again.

You are entitled to your beliefs and gays, like all other Americans, are entitled to their equal rights under the constitution. There is no conflict. Twenty years from now, few will remember that it was even an issue...
No true patriot would deny the same rights they enjoy to their fellows.
Disallowing human rights shouldn't be left up to the voters.
Removing freedom from a minority shouldn't be left up to the voters.
But, I guess that gives hope that we'll have a conservative nazi religious regime.
Next DC give the benefit's as long as proof of residency is for 5 years, this will show a committed relationship not just a dating habit.See it is wrong to ram this on people who carry their religion to the grave with them and are going to be teaching their kids what they have been taught and live by, while still teaching our kids that some people are different and our kids do have minds of their on and free will so we teach them to be respectful andmindful of other's. Yet we have a moral enviornmental aspect of harrassment to look at like minor's  seeing grown bearded men or just plain men along with women showing unneccesary affection in public which can be used a a recruitment tool for gay's or a not to easy dinner table discussion see the Bible say's man and woman are here to be fruitful and multiply, we should not be as Christian's  be force to live in a Sodom and Gormorah like astmosphere like we are in confirmation with it so I 'm sorry but do feel some of you same sex partners do deserve the benefit's of a lifelong loved one if cohabitating over a period of time not some 1to 2 year relationship.
The clear words of Jesus Christ......(Matthew 19:  4)  "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them MALE and FEMALE,'and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?
Diogenes
What i am saying is that demonizing the oposition does no good. make the argument that it is right to alow gay marriage. I have no strong feelings either way but i dont like being told i am raciest if i dont believe like you.
Just because a million people believe something, that does not make it true.  Just because the bible says it, that also does not mean it's true.

In the states that have legalized same sex marriage, the divorce rate has actually declined since it was legalized.  There is no economic reason to oppose it, in fact, it has been shown that the marriage industry would benefit quite a bit and jobs would be created.

In fact, the only valid reason for opposing same sex marriage is based on religion and pure bigotry.

Shame on you, Maine for continuing bigotry and denying the same rights others have to those your religion says should be discriminated against or you just don't like.  Talk about un-American . . .

The Founding Fathers Say;

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of RELIGION, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

We like to call this little ditty the 1st amendment.
Plus stop tying this to Black civil rigth's movement no were the same and guilt is not a good tool for we took a lot of abuse for way to many years and took it from all races not just some people who don't want gay marriage I didn't see King nor Kennedy  or anybody else who got killed or sat at the back of the bus during these marches with gay rigths signs no this fight is your own don't place those who died in vain with this cause for you are going a little to far in recruitment nobodys hating just a lot of people are not condoning it and have their right too.
i love democracy, the more the gay community tries to shove it's agenda down our throat, the more they realize, their agenda is not the nation's agenda, everything from, their titles "human rights" commission, and that it's about "equality",or "freedom", those are terms of the true struggle, that of african american people, who still face obstacles in education, infant mortality, and income, fundamental problems with real consequences, that  the nation can't feel good about who, you have sex with is not a real issue, the gay community does not face the issues, minority groups face, in access to power ,money, or education , to call your movement a struggle is disingenous at best and laughable to anyone who's suffered real discrimination that has threatened their life or their vision
