What conservatives just don't get about NY-23's message

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The morning after, conservative idol Sarah Palin's message for the tribe was essentially: The sky IS red, conservatives.

A defiant Palin wrote on her Facebook page last night, "The race for New York’s 23rd District is not over, just postponed until 2010."

You betcha!

Those who thought a loss for the Conservative Party candidate, Doug Hoffman, was a setback for the conservative movement are probably right, but that's no matter to Palin-ites. They'd argue they only lost because the stodgy Republican establishment didn't embrace Hoffman SOONER.

That's highly arguable, considering Hoffman's lack of knowledge of local issues, his carpetbagger status (he doesn't live in NY-23), and his just overall poor appearance as a candidate. He was always more of an idea. He wouldn't even meet with the Syracuse Post-Standard's editorial board, but who could blame him after his disastrous appearance before the local Watertown Daily Times.

It wrote on Oct. 23rd that Hoffman "showed no grasp of the bread-and-butter issues pertinent to district residents...." He spoke "generally" about national issues, with "no details."

It continued, "A flustered and ill-at-ease Mr. Hoffman objected to the heated questioning, saying he should have been provided a list of questions he might be asked. He was, if he had taken the time to read the Thursday morning Times editorial raising the very same questions."

Regardless of ideology, that is incredible and inexcusable for a candidate.

But that doesn't matter to the Tea Partiers. As the Watertown paper wrote in the same editorial, Tea Party chief Dick Armey "dismissed regional concerns as 'parochial' issues that would not determine the outcome of the election."

Last night proved otherwise. But don't tell that to conservatives.

Here's Palin's full post:

A Victory for Common Sense and Fiscal Sanity
Yesterday at 9:43pm
Congratulations to the new Governors-Elect of Virginia and New Jersey! I’d also like to offer a special word of support to the new Lieutenant Governor-Elect of New Jersey, Kim Guadagno, the first woman to hold that office.

Of course, the real victors in this election are the ordinary men and women who voted for positive change and a return to fiscal sanity. Your voices have been heard.

The race for New York’s 23rd District is not over, just postponed until 2010. The issues of this election have always centered on the economy – on the need for fiscal restraint, smaller government, and policies that encourage jobs. In 2010, these issues will be even more crucial to the electorate. I commend Doug Hoffman and all the other under-dog candidates who have the courage to put themselves out there and run against the odds.

To the tireless grassroots patriots who worked so hard in that race and to future citizen-candidates like Doug, please remember Reagan’s words of encouragement after his defeat in 1976:

“The cause goes on. Don't get cynical because look at yourselves and what you were willing to do, and recognize that there are millions and millions of Americans out there that want what you want, that want it to be that way, that want it to be a shining city on a hill.”

The cause goes on.

- Sarah Palin

Looks like the world's smartest woman booted another one......
Further proof why voters decided Palin was street smart but not too bright a bulb.
Hey Domenico.....whatcha' gonna' dow when Obama gets beat in 2012?
no comment today on the amusing musings of a moose.
Simple republican formula for winning - do not run against Obama, try to provide a positive vision or agenda on jobs and economy, stay mostly positive, do not emphasize the R on ur website or campaign literature, be moderate on issues as most Americans are, keep Palin and Rush far away from you!

Hoffman broke away from that blueprint by much and lost a 100 year republican district.
You lost the night but still find a way to pick on Palin, who is right on with her predictions. There wasn't enough time to embrace her candidate. and things will be diff in 2010. We ALL know that.
The fear of economic collapse is beginning to enter the minds of thinking people

Now that’s what I call ironic!

Where were these ‘so-called’ thinking people when we were on the brink of TOTAL economic collapse on 9.17.08? After 8 years of ‘fiscal conservatism’ in DC?

Why were they ‘asleep’ then and only NOW are waking up?

Eh… never mind… I already know the answer…   lol lol lol
Is this an editorial?
No one ever quotes Diogenes FaceBook page...he now asks, what is a Facebook?
Bottom line...Palin, Armey and the rest of the "Grassroots" circus attempt to pirate the NY-23 race by dumping tons of money from outside the district (95% of Hoffman's campaign contributions came from donors outside NY-23) with a candidate who lived outside the district.

Here's a question for the diehard conservatives who continue to embrace Reagan as Sarah Palin attempts to do in her post:

Would Reagan have approved such a candidate and such a campaign?
Lefties will ignore the fact that Obama, who we think is the President, made 5 appearances for Corzine in NJ, and several for Deeds in VA, and failed to even get his candidates even close to winning. Cal Sutton, MA (Sent Wednesday, November 04, 2009 9:57 AM)

Don't lecture me on how useless Obama and his wife are! Even if you add Oprah to the mix! Those syndicate construction and trucking bosses were promised an Olympics and I am left holding my shillelagh.
I love hearing the lefties on this blog talk about Obama not being a factor in all these dem defeats.

YOUR CORRECT - Obama - the sitting and very popular president was not a factor - no matter how hard he tried to matter - he did not matter at all!!!

Kind of like the Olympics - Obama is all blow and no Go!!!

I cant remember when a sitting president was "not a factor" - I think the correct term is "irrelevent"

No One Cares Who Obama wanted to Win !!!

Less than a year into his presidency and already a lame duck.  SNL should have fun with this - unless the white house threatens them again.

The big question that no leftwing media outlet will talk about is. . . Why is the Obama Administration going after ONLY Black Lawmakers with their ethics probes???  How would the leftwing news outlets have covered this if Bush had done the same thing?  Why in only FOX news the only outlet standing up for the Black Dem Lawmakers??? I thought they were the "racist" ones???
Sarah Palin campaigned for the Conservative candidate in a very Blue state, that Barak Obama won easily last year, and lost, and the liberals dance their little Happy Dance (the one Oprah taught them).

Barack Obama, the President, campaigned for two candidates, one an incumbent, in two Blue states that he easily won last year, and his candidates lost, all the while the liberals forgot how to to their Happy Dance.
Typical FR tactic - - when the Dems are down, attack and distract by mentioning Palin.  If she is no threat to the radical lefties, then why not ignore her?
Obama's Administration gives Millions to ACORN to fix these elections and they failed - Will ACORN have to return the money - Is there any warranty on the Soros and Acorn scam?

The Dems spent 3 times as much money and got NOTHING for it.  If they would have spent the money on healthcare they could have saved thousands of people - now we see where their priorities really are!!!
You lost the night but still find a way to pick on Palin, who is right on with her predictions. There wasn't enough time to embrace her candidate. and things will be diff in 2010. We ALL know that.

Maybe you should let the GOP in that district find their own candidate next year.

Maybe Sarah Palin should do the same.
Yeah !!
Let's get some MORE Cross Burners to challenge moderate Republicans

Or even semi-rational Republicans

How's THAT working Wing Nuts ??

The conservatives need to run MORE Flat Earthers
People who talk in tongues
People plugged into the Holy Spirit
Sarah and the Tire Biters

In California's 10th District, Progressive John Garamendi replaces the founder ofteh Blue Dogs, Ellen Tausher

In what once was a 'purple' district, the Republican had NO CHANCE for winning

Too bad about Maine ?
Anyone know what happened to tip things there ??

Don't worry, young people aren't as ignorant and prejudiced as their parents.
We'll have equal right for Gays and Lesbians eventually

Let the liberals continue their cluster muck. No need to get into the name calling and ridicule they typically use as a tactic. The voter turnout in 2010 will be huge and even greater in 2012.

Huffington Post:

In the White House, the wistfulness for the simpler days is palpable. "The day was just suffused with emotion and hope and warmth," David Axelrod, Mr. Obama's senior adviser, recalled about Election Day last year. "But it is an emotional peak that you can't maintain day to day as you do the business of government. The challenge is to maintain that degree of idealism and optimism as you work through the meat grinder.

"Everything about the politics of Washington works against hope and optimism and unity. So you have to push against that every day, understanding that it's going to be an imperfect end result." He added: "That night was sublime. And much of what goes on in Washington is prosaic. Or profane." David Axelrod

In honor of the ‘Kiss of the Dead Salmon’… you betcha!  *wink* *wink* sorry just couldn’t help myself! I for one HOPES she stays out there front & center and endorses EVERY candidate for 2010!

You’re spot on!  Anytime you throw some FACTS out to them… they spin & twist & name call cause they NEVER have the truth on their side!

Take a look around here today… they won 2 Governors seats… and they’re still MISERABLE!  lol lol lol  Just goes to show there’s no pleasing the whack jobs!

They scream they’re starving with a loaf of bread under each arm… lol lol lol
I'm sorry but I don't get all the hoopla that Republicans are making (I guess they have to cheer about SOMETHING).  The two governor's races were not upsets by any stretch of the imagination.

The real upset was NY-23.  Republicans had held on to that seat since the late 1800s.  That's NEWS, people.

Chuck Todd himself told his viewers that Virginians pick their governors opposite of the party that's in power -- so naturally, they chose a Republican governor.

As far as NJ goes: an incumbant governor with terrible numbers, corruption charges, and an eminent domain issue in the state -- no big surprise that Christy would win.

Keep plugging those conservative candidates, Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh!  Next up:  Florida!
"dismissed regional concerns as 'parochial' issues that would not determine the outcome of the election."

All politics is local, Dick.
The grass roots patriots that worked for sanity and that is why the Democrat won in NY-23. Extremists will continue to lose whether right or left. But, thanks to Sarah and the rightwing nuts, the uber cons, the extremists of the far right we have more easy victories for the Democrats. Main stream Republicans have more sense than to vote for those extremists. In NJ and VA the Republicans that won were running as moderates. (VA will show a wolf in sheep clothing, however and they'll be ruing the day they voted for him but that is then this is now)
While they're not insignificant (45% of the vote) the tea partiers need to realize that all politics is local and to trust the local judgement.  So what if Dede was liberal/moderate.  As long as she caucused with the Republicans, that would still be one step closer to taking back the house and get the powerful chairmanships back.
The GOP has now lost 5 straight "Special" Congressional elections. Sarah, can you count to 5.....

The GOP (Goofy Old Party) is going backwards nationally. Bravo for another failure to the "Drugster" to "Beckster" to "Sarah the genius" to Michael "What up" Steele and to the unfortunately named Dick Armey.
I agree with Lesson #3 from the previous post.  Vote out ALL incumbents.  Let's just get rid of everyone currently in Congress and start over.  They're all lying crooks looking out for themselves instead of the good of the country.  They are supposed to represent the people, not their own self interests.
Gee, it is fun to watch the GOP civil war. Let's see Sarah spit the party more and more. She can be the Conservative who brought down the GOPers.

Pr1celess!
We want, no need Sarah involved in every 2010 Republican / Conservative race for the House & Senate.
"Kiss of the Dead Salmon?"  Isn't that Rahm Emanuel??
way to go kathy, in 3 years lets elect another republican president and have him do the same things that former president bush did, so we can make you happy!!!
Jeff Evanston IL.

Okay, I'll agree with you. Let's do it Jeff!

Compared to Hoffman, Silly Sarah is a Mensa member!
LMAO!!!!!
I'm not a Palin fan, not a Republican, not a democrat.  I am, however, extremely amazed at how afraid the media is of Palin.  They go out of their way to tear her down and end up looking like petty junior high girls in the process.  We getcha!
What conservatives just don't get about NY-23's message

Sounds a little cranky.  Did your baby not get the memo that you're supposed to get an extra hour of sleep with the time change?  Mine sure didn't.
A district that is moderate by nature almost elected a candidate (i) not running as a Republican but as a "Conservative"; (ii) had never held political office; (iii) actually showed himself as inexperienced; (iv) had zero help from the Republican Party until it had no choice; (v) had the Republican candidate endorse the Democrat after she dropped out; and (vi) developed no real momentum until a few weeks before the election.  He did in fact lose, but that he lost only by a couple of percentage points is remarkable given the circumstances, even if there was national attention.  So anyone who says it's not remarkable, and that New Jersey didn't mean anything (after multiple trips by Obama, EJ Dionne saying Corzine did well and Deeds did poorly because the former embraced Obama and the latter didn't)and wants to continue telling themselves that, go ahead, keep your guard down.  It will help us get this Lord of the Flies administration under control eventually.
Hey Buddy!  (hope you’re not mad at me :0)

Look on the bright side of Kathy, Charlotte… at least she’s FINALLY dropped the… I’m a Democrat shtick! lol lol lol

Take her ravings with a ‘grain of salt’… once a liar… always a liar! Their true colors always bleed through!

Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL

As you well know, I supported Hillary, not as a Democrat, but as an Independent. I'm so disillusioned at the Democratic Party and the lack of leadership now that other options are all looking clearly better than what we have in control.

It's sour grapes to call someone a liar because of your obvious prejudices isn't it?
BoBo Berry.  ACORN doesn't even have an office in NY23, bobo.  Can't face the fact that the republican party killed itself, so blame it all on ACORN.  Just like you blame McCain losing and everything else--ACORN did it.  ACORN doesn't vote, it registers voters and when they find invalid registrations, they report it as required; and there are a number of GOP voter registration groups that have been prosecuted for illegal activities.
Even after the elections a year after Obama's win, libs continue to have wood for Bush.

Green is definitely the word to describe their party.
Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL

Jeff Evanston IL.

How many will die today because Obama is more concerned about his political future than he is about the issues at hand? How many.

Are Bush and Obama the same?
Where are we on HCR? Where are we on Afghanistan? Where are we on foreclosures? Employment? Maybe if they were on Sarah's Facebook page they would be worthy of discussion...There are actual issues out there that are even more important to the nation than Palin's views on an interim congressional election, although you wouldn't know it by the hyperventilating prose here...
My question was answered from the previous post, Facebook! Gov. Palin still does not get it. A moderate Republican won in NJ. Mr. Deeds in Va only has himself to blame for his loss. People want a representative that actually has a grasp of the issues (unlike Palin & Hoffman). One thing I've noticed about the "Palin, Rush & Glenn" conservatives is, they all say how things should be. They never tell you how they plan on getting there and what will happen once they do.
They say lower taxes and cut spending. Ok, lower taxes is good, but didn't that cause some issues already during Reagan and the last Bush. What programs do you plan on cutting or cutting back on? How do you think roads, bridges and basic things you depend on everyday get paid for? Taxes! So what do you cut? Maybe if the vitriol stopped and some real concrete ideas were discussed you wouldn't look like the uninformed right wing nuts we all know and are amused by.
Pat, Boston.  Thanks for providing the Huffington info.  What Axelrod said is what I tried to express, far less effectively, yesterday.  Now is not the time to give up in frustration or anger at the slowness of change.  It takes time to change the decades of embedded thinking and patience while pushing back against the status quo is what we must have to succeed.

I said the same thing in '06 & '08 and we saw many new faces in congress yet no new cooperation or desire to do what the people want or get something done.

OUR President is on a roll!
WE control congress.
WE have a slim majority of governors.
WE know what the people want.
The Repuke, rethug, repug, Party of No, obstructionist, Bushwhacker, cowboy diplomacy, Big Oil buddy, party of the rich is HISTORY.

DEMS can do whatever they want. The Republicans are ineffective and weak so ANYTHING the DEMOCRATS want to do will pass with ease!

Dont worry, be happy.

Hope and Change is here to stay.
Repeat after me you geniuses...Dede S is not a MODERATE...She is a Liberal Democrat! Hoffman stood for 3 basic tenets; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness (read: personal property)!

How is that extreme? How is that bad for the region or the country? And why should we Conservatives "moderate" on core principles that founded this country!

I am originally from the NY 23 region and like most upstate regions it is becoming a welfare state...Industry has been decimated and development is basically against the law due to the Adirondack Park Agency. The GOP had a chance to change that with Pataki, but he, like George Bush, took the RINO approach of "we can dole out welfare BETTER"...and look what we got! A dependent electorate!

Be prepared all! This is 1976-1980 era all over again...Reagan had to fight off a "savior" named Carter and Stockholm Syndrome suffers named Ford/Dole...and the "voodo economics" claims of Papa Bush...Guess what? We ended up with 25 years of nearly uninteruppted growth...

Liberty works...Ironically you "liberals" embrace the very candidates and systems that enslave you to the government tit just like the idiots in NY 23

Let's see now.  A few weeks ago, Hoffman was lingering in third place and then Sarah Palin endorses him and his numbers take off.

You can dismiss her all you want but she energized Hoffman's campaign and helped make it close.
I just hope the wins by the Republicans last night will not stall the efforts for a robust health care bill from the majority Dems in Congress.  The governor choices by the Dems were less than stellar and the race in New Jersey was close.  Maybe these losses will get the base of the Dem. Party reactivated for 2010!  The Republicans have plenty of time to keep their "ante-everything" constituents activated as they do not have to help solve America's problems or write any original health care proposals of their own.  From what I see, the conservative right must consider themselves unemployed and "out of work" until the next big election cycle.  What a waste!  And Democrats, listen up,  Obama cannot change America on his own! Reid, get rid of Liebermann.  He is a thorn, a spoiler.  Get a backbone Democrats.  Deliver change even if it hurts.
Why are we STILL talking about this woman? She's a dim bulb, a quitter, and obviously, has no real influence outside of a tiny base of right wing fanatics. Can the media PLEASE move on and forget that she exists -- because for most of America, she doesn't.
The media should stop giving Palin a forum (that is, reporting her facebook postings) until she submits to a legitimate interview format with a credible media outlet. The scary thing about her is how she is being given a free pass to propagate her smug, underinformed thoughts, not that she is actually a formidable thinker or leader.  She is a spectacle, not a leader.
Don't kids play on facebook silly thats all palin and plain
Don't kids play on facebook silly thats all palin and plain
Jody, it is really bad out there. The media, the GOP. All sitting on the sidelines, either looking for ratings or power.

I'm pretty disgusted. Keith, Rachel, Markos, Eugene Robinson, Richard Wolffe, John Dean - I love their work.

But the numbers are dwindling for me as far as any respect towards most of the media. But they don't care. Well, I feel the same way about them. I don't care anymore what most of them have to say. Their opinions are NOT more valid than mine or yours.

They're just louder and meaner.

Which solves nothing.
